2 Year Old Amputated by Mistake? WTF?

November 30, 2009 by Brown Shuga

In this case, surely we agree revenge is justified?

I read in shock, a story in The Times about a 2 year old girl from Daveyton who was amputated by mistake, when she had actually  been admitted to hospital for burn marks on her hands.  Story HERE.

Apparently this “shocking incident” happened at the Charlotte Maxeke  ACADEMIC Hospital (previously Johannesburg Hospital) and for a hospital that is the main teaching institution for Wits Faculty of Health Sciences as well as a provider for all undergraduate and postgraduate training in ALL areas of health professions,  HOW DOES SUCH A MISTAKE happen??

What pisses me off is that the Gauteng Health MEC says that those found guilty will be disciplined and possibly face dismissal and I just think that’s not good enough! A dismissal means they WALK out of the job and get a find other jobs the next day… while that poor little girl will be scarred and now live with a disability for LIFE.

Not fair at all. I say there should be criminal charges too. Not Fair!

omw, i am so horrified. God forbid, my child ever needs surgery and i’m prevented from going in the theatre with her. Can u imagine this happening to your child??? what’s even worse is this kind of surgery is IRREVERSIBLE.

The DoH must be sued for every single incident where they mess up people’s lives and those responsible blacklisted so they never find work again. Man, this sucks!

Yeah, sad story about amputation… I still hav heard what actuali happened….???

Yes, it is employer’s obligation to report cases to malpractice to the relavant statutary bodies (criminal/ civl/ professional) for further investigations & sanctions if internal discipinary proccess finds some wrong doing…. In this case we can expect those ppl 2 b investigated by their Health Council or sumting…. and we can expect them 2 b struck off the register if findings dictate so…!

I honestly believe that there should be legal action taken against all involved parties. If a natural person “amputates” another person’s legs they are faced with jail time, what puts neglegent doctors and medical staff above the law?! How does being a Doctor make it right to make such gross mistakes, what makes him different from the guy driving drunk maiming innocent people in an accident, the Highjacker shooting his victim, scarring him for live?

    Dismissal is simply not enough!

yes the family can sue for mega millions but the pain will still be there
it is really not fair, money does not erase the pain, people must stop this voet voet nonsense of being incompetent, they are causing as lot of pain

i was pained when i saw that baby crying and her mom crying as well. it still pains me when i think about it. it is really unfair

government must clean up the hospitals of idiotic employees, and provide all the tools required for the public that voted them to get better service… and also fucken sort the public hospitals out!!!!

Wow… Just wow. I can imagine.. Wait, I CAN’T imagine what this is doing to the child – and the poor child! Hope she adjusts to this. I feel so bad for the whole family. This is a crying shame

Even the one who earns the most minimum wage, is taxed so that they can be afforded this bloody health. The unemployed also have all the rights to it. Now what do they have when that’s taken away from them? This is just sad… and criminal!

As for Mam’Manto, do we really know what’s up with her liver only being rejected by her body, only now… after 2years? Eish, I hope she stayed away from booze as the doc told her to… A liver is very sensitive, Mam’Manto is a doctor herself, she should understand… Insensitive?
