Most Memorable Headlines of 2009!
November 12, 2009 by Brown Shuga
We look back at what we will miss most about 2009!
2009 has been quite an interesting year. So many great headlines, some bad, upsetting, some good but generally it was a year filled with a whole lot of excitement. Julius Malema & the ANCYL, Chris Brown assaults Rihanna, Zuma becomes president, Beyonce’s Single Ladies video blows the hell up,The confederations cup, Caster Semenya, Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize, yho, bekun**wa mos this year, siras!
On a personal note, it was a very bad financial year (Futshek 2 all my friends who are nodding to this). Yazi sometimes I look back and wonder how I made it through but ja, am here, still breathing, my son is doing much better in school and life rocks!
Moving on to positive things, I joined Twitter this year (so did many of you) and made some of the best friends/contacts ever! Even got a reply from my fave international male artist, whom I shall not mention (for the 2nd time in this article)! heheh.
So while thinking about writing this article, which is meant to highlight the best/shocking headlines of 2009, I asked my twitter friends which headlines they thought were unforgettable and the overwhelming response I got, had me going “wow” & thinking how thankful I am to have lived in 2009, what is definitely one of the best years of my life. Broke or not. Lol.
I wish I could have been able to put all of the tweets here but if I do this will be the longest article in history so I’ve chosen some of the best ones I got (in no particular order). Please do follow them on twitter coz they turn Tweeting into such a memorable experience.
To be quite honest I had no idea what this whole noise was about & seeing that those in the know, aboMusa thought it was an anti-climax, I won’t bother reading up on it.
Hahahahah well, did Mandla have millions? Only he, Khanyi and his bank manager know! All we know is that he was recently spotted driving a Citi Gold and we are so glad he got it just before it was discontinued. Who knows what he could be driving now.. Did somebody say BMX! heheh. All I can do is just SMD (shake my head) at Mandla for having allowed himself to be in the position he’s in now. Hopefully he’s learnt his lesson. We wish him well.
Wow! The whole world stopped to watch this historic moment! OBAMA: The most famous & probably hottest president in the world.
It was a proud moment….
…..and very emotional! It was a special moment even for us who do not live in America. We were alive and watching when history was being written. We all loved Obama….
…until he won the Nobel Peace Prize. People from all corners asked what he had done to deserve this. Some said, he won it for what he was about to do. Well, OB baby, the world is watching you!
1 June 2009, a sad day when a flight from Brazil to Paris crashed into the Atlantic Ocean killing all 216 passengers (one infant, seven children, 82 women, and 126 men) and 12 crew members. Of the 33 Nationalities that were on board, 1 was South African & no, there were no Nigerians on the flight
On a lighter noter….
Hahahah who could forget Julius Malema’s housewarming party that even made Talk Radio 702 news! Only because his neighbours complained about the noise. Personally thought this was not newsworthy but this story was all over the news!
The Floyd Shivambu response that Sebs is reffering to is:
“Most neighbours were informed about the party and they were also invited. A majority of them showed up and were grooving with us.”
This was probably one of the most entertaining, shocking moments in entertainment. It was the 2009 MTV Music Video Awards and Taylor Swift wins the award for Best Female Video and starts giving her acceptance speech until Kanye West interrupts her on stage to declare that Beyonce’s video was the best video of all time.
Hahahaha if u missed it, listen here:
And in other tragic news…
Given Rihanna’s recent interview on this matter, I have so much to say in reaction to this & that alone deserves an article so watch this space. As for Joost van der Westhuizen & his sex tape, triple YAWN!!
kwa kwa kwa kwa who can forget our beloved Carlos Santana the Bafana Bafana getting sacked! For that one day, South Africa & Mamadou Gaye were in heaven!
Oh my word! The flop of the year, definitely has to be Big Brother Africa 4: The Revolution. WTH??? Talk about a mess. I have no idea what they were trying to do but they failed miserably and Africa deserves an apology for this mess. & Nkenna! I hope that there will be NO BBA for the next 3 years, at least.
Caster Semenya the 18 year old girl from Limpopo who won gold in 800 metres at the 2009 Athletics World Championships became a household name. Not for winning the gold medal but because her gender was questioned.
We’re still counting the casualties of this saga….
….some Australian publication called Caster a Hermaphrodite. And speaking of Msholozi……..
And of course, back home, the biggest news was that Jacob Zuma was sworn in as South African president. Some had said they would leave the country, (we’re still waiting), some said pigs would fly (all we saw was swine flu) but I wasn’t surprised at this because I knew Zuma would be president and that’s why I did NOT waste my vote.
I hope this little detail won’t stand between us… heheh.
I would love to hear what your best/worst headlines of 2009 were, do share!
