Gareth Loses His Mind & My Respect!

December 17, 2009 by Brown Shuga

Forget Julius, Gareth Cliff is the idiot.

gar

Reacting to the death of Manto Tshabalala Msimang, the Idols Judge, MNet host & 5FM breakfast host who is famous for shooting his mouth off, lost his marbles on Twitter yesterday and it was not funny.

Gareth posted the following tweet, and it literally started a war on Twitter !

cliffy

Gareth: IDIOT of the YEAR!

Now this shocked most people to the core! Mostly black people, because we have been taught that when someone has died, it doesn’t matter what they did, we do not speak ill of the dead. If we don’t have anything positive to say, we’d rather keep quiet because this is just too shocking. Even for me.

Well, Gareth comes from a totally different background so he doesn’t agree with that because he believes…..

setlatla

Gareth: IDIOT of the YEAR

He posted the above tweet after seeing the reaction to his first tweet.  I don’t wanna lie, yes he was expressing his opinion but this was uncalled for and made me lose all respect for him. Manto, the person he hates so much is dead, gone, she doesn’t breathe anymore, and neither will she see Gareth’s message. The message will be read by Manto’s family and her kids, who are mourning her loss. How are they to feel when they see this?

Gareth’s twitter page is a personal tool that has nothing to do with his job but he is a public figure and that means he can’t just go around kaak’ing people without regard for what the consequences of his actions would be. He is Gareth Cliff from 5FM so what he does will be associated with his job and he works for the national broadcaster for crying out loud, so does he think that we (the people who were shocked by his tweet) would think it’s okay for him to say such things just coz he didn’t say them on air? I don’t think so.

Just like his idol, Malema, Gareth, (who is not new to controversy & was once suspended for “interviewing Jesus” and causing havoc for “calling God Petty” )said that he will not apologize for the Manto tweet so Manto’s family should not expect an apology for the disrespect he dished out.

apology

Gareth: IDIOT of the YEAR

Well, maybe I’m overreacting but I’d love to hear what your thoughts are on this matter  but before that, let me share how our celebrities reacted to Gareth’s tweet!

DJ SBU:

Sbu

Khaya Dlanga

khaya

Bonang Matheba

Bonang

Sizwe Dhlomo

Dhlomo

Tebello Motsoane

tibz

When all these tweets were flying around, Gareth was nowhere to be found on Twitter and Once the “F” word started flying around…. his colleague DJ Fresh seemed to get offended and tried defending him…

fresh

I think one of my favourite DJs, Fresh, was a bit confused here because he’s complaining about how people were attacking Gareth and not the issue. What exactly was the issue sir because your friend’s tweet was not about Manto’s HIV/AIDS issue, it was about HER. So it’s okay for Gareth to attack her but it’s not okay for us to attack him ??  *confused*

DJ Fresh also replied to the comments about whether or not the SABC could take action against Gareth…

fresh2

Interesting.

gareth_cliff

Some people thought that the ANC had to know about this and deal with Gareth accordingly…

tumi

…and some felt that Gareth was just stating his opinion and we’d say the same if it was Mugabe who had died…

loyiso

This tweet got me thinking. I actually would not have been so upset had Gareth’s tweet been about Mugabe. Does that mean I’m just as “bad” as Gareth? Well, no because even though I would think “good riddance” I would not tweet it because it would just be disrespectful to those who are mourning his death.

So Gareth received all these twit-reactions and he still stuck to his comment…..

Gareth: IDIOT of the YEAR

Gareth: IDIOT of the YEAR

Well Gareth, we totally understand and agree that there is freedom of speech but it all comes with responsibility papa… actually here is a tweet that put the “freedom of speech” in context:

freedom

Gareth may not have apologized for his tweet (yet) & may not delete it (for ego reasons) but he’s human and i’m positive he must be regretting this because he doesn’t know what damage it will cost. Yes he’s Gareth Cliff but first and foremost, he’s a man, as in umntu.

Sjoe, this whole Gareth fiasco lasted for a good few hours on Twitter and he did steal Manto’s moment shem because instead of us reacting to Manto’s death, we were reacting to Gareth’s reaction to Manto’s death. We had also forgotten that it was Reconciliation Day…well….all of us but this guy…

Jack

LOL!!!

So what is your view? Did we overeact or is Gareth Cliff an idiot?

Note: Gareth hosts The Gareth Cliff Breakfast show on 5FM & a stiff (coz it’s heavily scripted) talkshow “The Gareth Cliff Show” on MNET. (Think

OKKAAAYYY!!! I respect Gareth for speaking his mind but he is no kid and knew the consequences of his actions…could this have been some sort of a publicity stunt to get more listenership or a bigger audience? Because I won’t lie, after this…I want to tune in to his breakfast show and watch his tv show to hear what he has to say for himself.

He got what he wanted now how will he sleep at night?

Thought the tweet was uncalled for. Yes, Gareth plays by his own rules & sometimes I like him for that but HIV/AIDS is more complex than he can comprehend & his tweet left a bad taste…it was just WRONG…

  3. Mohubedu on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 5:39 am

As a follower and proud supporter of Gareth Cliff I’m surprised by his lack of respect for the dead although all these things he tweeted he said while she was alive. May we please respect the man’s opinion as stupid as it is and may we all tune in to 5fm mornings

  4. BoyUninterruped on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 6:25 am

Pretty naff, all the reactions. Many horrible things were said about Manto while she was alive and it’s fraudulent (not African) to suddenly make an about face and fake mourning her death.

  5. BoyUninterruped on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 6:31 am

Oh and Gareth Cliff? Idiot of the Year? Hardly, too many other candidates. Anyway, none of that matters, everyone boohoo’ing him will double over in tears of mourning is he were to die today…right?

  6. Nthatisi on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 6:58 am

All i’m going to say is leave the guy alone! It was his opinion. Yekelani ukuzenza ncono. I am waiting for that…Nthatisi does not get it.

LeloB, i read your comments on twitter too. You dont speak for all of us as you also like to stir the race issue. I can sreenprint some of your comments too. Try to be more tolerant and not make every issue race related.

  10. Mohubedu on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 7:48 am

Dj Sbu with his fake lisp and his annoying doof-doof music an ass? Frankly I agree with Gareth Cliff although I would not say things like that out loud. G.C idiot of the year? Oh please! Not as long as Malema is alive

  11. Malibongwe on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 7:50 am

As much as though Im a supporter for freedom of speech, and stickin to one’s guns, I do believe that he stepped on the threshold for hate speech. Yes, Hitler n Mugabe are beyond being hated 4 good reasons, but I do think that everyone’s need not be stripped from them. This goes for the deceased, too. I mean, I know some people are championing his practice for airing his opinion, but what gud is it if it paints him as an unemotional robot who is programmed to get tongues wagging, for whatever reason. Some may call us hypocrites, but we cant help the fact that a bulk of us black people were taught to respect the dead, NO MATTER what life they led or what they said as living people… Without mumbling too much, id like to say that, in most part, agree with Brown Shuga

  12. Jackie on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 7:58 am

Gareth is a public figure and a role model,nw i wonder if he was on drug cheap weed or something, the Old woman deserve respect, like anyone else on this earth would do wrongs and writes, learning from other people’s mistakes will make us better,so wena Gareth should stop smoking cheap weed ko backstage o be o tla ka kk coments,i dnt really gonna call you idiot, but do apologise before mbokoto think otherwise.

Tjo that was really uncalled for, im seriously disappointed in gareth… he took his so called “freedom of speech” too far this tym and stepped on too many people’s toes! D dude should just stop being egotistical and swallow his messed up pride, and just delete that tweet…

  15. Roger Young on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 8:29 am

I said it yesterday and I’ll say it again. Gareth Cliff is so desperate for relevance that he’ll try anything. He’s like a big baby that no one will play with. We all took the bait. And he managed to get into the national spotlight again. Our mistake, it’s his right to say what he wants, its our right not to listen. He will suffer the consequences of his foolishness and end up on some small local station playing “best of 90’s” hits one day.

  16. Barrie on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 8:31 am

Respecting death, and more importantly their family, is a human thing. Why this ‘black thing white thing’? Why are we so often afraid to claim something for all of us?

Gareth can have his views. He’s entitled to them. There are plenty of other people who feel far stronger. I do think he should have chosen his forum. Twitter is not a great forum for debating anything that needs depth.

    * Is he an idiot for his view? – No
    * Is he an idiot for flighting it on Twitter? – It was careless
    * Is he an idiot in general? – That’s probably a good question : )

  17. Renegade on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 8:32 am

Mina I have no opinion about this, becasue Gareth is so unfeeling, that he is not bothered at all about what people say about him. I think that is part of what is appealing to me about him. Oh well.

  18. Lahvee on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 8:41 am

There are alot of black ppl who had not so nice comments after hearing that Manto passed away, they just didnt tweet their comments. That was Gareth’s mistake. I bet even the ppl who were “disgusted” by his comments probably said something “off the record”.

Im not taking sides. I was talking to a friend on the phone and she mentioned that Manto passed away, my first reaction was “Ooh.. Shame”.. and her response was “Tjo, you’re the first to say shame – ppl have had mean comments”

    RIP to Manto

  20. mantwa on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 8:51 am

People must stop overreacting maan, if Gareth’s statement was tweeted by some1 not in the public eye, people werent gonna act all holier than thou. as much as i hate bringing up the race issue, i think people are just upset the statement was said by a white person, and what does the ANC have to do with any of this? C’mon people, there are important things to worry about than gareth’s tweet.

  21. Tich on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 8:51 am

I was apalled and horrified at GC tweet…to the extent that when his show came on on MNET last night I did not switch channels I swithched off the telly and picked up a book to read. Life is sacred. Period. GC tweet was crass and without tact. He too shall die one day and I am certain that his kith and kin will have no qualms with those who may tweet thoughts such as his and have parties now that he is dead. Dimwit.
The difference between Malema and GC is hairstyles and colour. These two are cut from the same media-whoring cloth !!!

    Not done reading BUt
    1. I love Sizwe Dlomo’s tweet about the issue.
    2. I agree with u BS…if you dont have anything positive to say….dont say nothing.
I was just thinking that why is everyone on his case when all i heard was vile messages yestreday from blogs and news website..but i gree thank, that him being a public figure does mean something…but damn if this dude publicly holds such opinions about Gd,then i really dont expect him to loose sleep over what he said.

3….THIRDLY……i feel the debate up untill the point where ANC is suggested to solve the matter. What an insult to ME…. I feel i am more qualified to wag my fingure at Gareth Than ANYBODY from the ANC….it would patronize to puke i tell you.
Should they dare say a word..if i make to that comference i’d throw a shoe at them like that Iraqi journo….

  25. GA on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 9:09 am

Well i know for a fact that a lot of people thought the same as garteh…..some said it out loud. I know people who are wishing Mugabe could the worst death ever and i bet the’d be glad if he died. BUt i guess its his status that makes him the subjcet of scrutiny.

NB:…it disgusts me just as much that Malema hurls insults at the “LIVING”…and i personally think it should be a cause for concern and uproar more than insulting the dead. Because if those people he insults pass on, fact that he wont insult them when they are dead coz he is a “black child” who knows he isnt supposed to (makes me mad typing this..the double stds) to insult the dead, does not take away ftom the fact he PUBLICLY inuslted them when they were alive..elders nogal..where is black culture then…or now in his case???

And Bren76’s teweet is just spot on…

Must say…Gareth reminds me of Chuck Bass in gossip girl…his character that is. That can mean a lot of things..to me anyways.

Well, Manto gets my idiot of decade award. May her soul rest in peace together with the helpless souls that went down the grave by her and Thabo’s dubious decisions on HIV/AIDS. May her soul rest in peace together with those people she overtook in the queue for a new liver (maybe if the liver went to the person that it were meant, then maybe should not have had complications with it)

Gareth’s remark was a bit overboard and DJ Sbu’s remark was just as idiotic and followed by that spineless mascot of his called Trevor.

Okay, Manto was not a bad person. yes she had her mistakes but yall have to agree that we can’t put her on the same categories as bo Mugabe. Exactly what was her mistake besides the Aids thing? and please dont mention the stealing of linen and drinking. all of us have stolen something at one time in our life and dont get me started on drinking. Gareth get off your high horse you are no saint youself.
‘Let he who is without sin be the first to cast the stone’

I am not saying that you should have pretended you liked Manto, but you have to think of the family. Yes, he is right the dead cannot hear anything so there is absolutely no point for him to tweet that now about Manto as she cannot hear him. What has Manto’s family ever done to him coz they are the one’s left behind to read those comments.

Yesterday was supposed to be Reconciliation day, an opportunity for us to live and let live, to let bygones be bygones. People we need to learn to differentiate between freedom of speech and hate speech. What Gareth did is definitely not AYOBA

  32. Bigmama on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 9:39 am

All l can say is that we cannot compare Manto to Mugabe and Hilter, its like comparing a sheep to a lion.

Gareth Cliff is an idiot period.

  33. mohau on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 10:01 am

Saw it all unravell and in all honesty I don’t recall Manto saying that people should replace their medicen for garlic. What I do remember is her making a speech about great nutritional habits where she spoke against taking medication and having a staple meal of bread and tea. Everybody knows that garlic is a phenominal immune booster and beetroot is a great iron booster.

But we have irresponsible journalist who create stories instead of reporting them. Just like our President taking a shower to cure Aids. Show me a clip where he said that??? Of course you can’t because it doesn’t exist. What does exist is a court transcript where he was asked about about the turn out of events of the day.

So if people read more than the Daily Sun they would know that.

Manto didn’t kill people, the media did and to compare her to Robert Mugabe is plain Evil (even if its for arguments sake)

We all know he is an attention starved twat face! But I am extremely proud of the darkies who spoke out against such hate speech all in the name of freedom!!!

Just because it’s part of black culture to stfu about the bad things a dead person did – doesn’t mean GC needs to do the same. Last time I looked, he wasn’t black.

  43. Alice on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 11:10 am

Gareth is entitled to his opinion just as you are entitled to your opinion. And what is this crap about the family she left behind reading his tweets? When my mom passed away last year the last thing on my mind was to log on to twitter. You are the idiots who are blowing this all out of proportion and spreading it all over the internet. You and your friends are all a bunch of attention seeking gossip mongers!!!Did Manto care about all the people who died as a result of her incompetence and all the orphans left without parents because of her? Manto was an alcoholic who didn’t deserve a new liver in the first place and only got it because of who she was. Did she care that the liver she was given and abused could have saved a more deserving person’s life? I think not, she carried on drinking and had she not died yesterday, she would no doubt have had a second transplant. IMO, she died not a day too soon!

Is that not what she did by choosing not to give HIV patients ART and by accepting a liver which could have gone to a non-alcoholic instead? Were she an ordinary South Afrioan, she would never have been considered for a liver transplant in the first place, given her drinking history.

@ Alice. It is just so freaking amazing, now that she is dead y’all feel the need to rant and rave about the liver. If you were so concerned about the whole thing, I thinks that y’all should have adressed the issue while she was still alive, na khona she did not give herself that liver you should be critisizing the person who decide that she was ‘worthy’ of that liver. Surely the problem with the liver issue is not Manto herself but the system itself and the people responsible for implementing it, rather challenge that.

They should have hung her a long time ago….I hope she is burning in that special place right now!

  63. BuhleFab on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 4:05 pm

ARRGHH man people should stop getting themselves worked-up about wat GC said and for some to even suggest that the ANC should step-in is ridiculous really. JUJU baby gives people the middle finger all the time and he gets away with it. GC had the guts/stupidity (whichever way u c it) to say wat most people have been saying since they heard of Manto’s passing away.

  64. Fruity on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 4:13 pm

@ Bleach, tell me, did Manto infect those 300 000 people with HIV/AIDS. In this day and age you still get people who have unprotected sex with multiple partners and when they get the infection they cry foul, please. If you have unprotected sex, if you have sex with multiple partners there is a very high possibility that you WILL get infected. People just be more careful whatever you do and ALWAYS remember that your actions are followed by consequences.Again we must not put ourselves in risky situations hoping that the government will bail us out

  65. Bleach on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 4:52 pm

@Fruity No, that’s obviously a stupid question but the masses out there who unfortunately don’t have the same education, look up to their leaders for advice and guidance. Those positions of power come with severe consequences as we have all seen and the leaders should face the music when they screw up, they obviously enjoy the power and luxurious lifestyle it brings! She made SA a laughing stock to the world and with her indirect methods helped bring the deaths of a lot of people and caused huge suffering amongst our people. The ANC seems to be good at doing things the way they please, problem is everything they touch turns to shit.

Stick very close to your TV screens ladies and gentlemen, I would love to hear what Julias Malema has got to say about this one ‘It’s war, he’s probably gonna take it to the streets’

I don’t know what you are all on about… Manto is going to live a lot longer than any of us. I mean, in a few million years, when archaeologists stumble onto this grave with tissue in perfect condition (alcohol being such a good preservative – not that the liver will be of much use), all they have to do is use the advanced medical and cloning methods of that day and voila! she’ll be back!!

Bet it won’t be long before they seriously start regretting their actions though…

PS I’m starting a petition to have Robert and George W cremated.

Bathong please ignore this fool. To me he has always looked like a kid who was always ignored by girls at school, teased by his peers and his voice is so lousy for a DJ or talk show hosts. So I never took him serious except that he is a loser. So I ignore everything about him, his show, his input in Idols in fact I ignore everything about him.
