4PLAY : Sex Tips For Girls!
January 15, 2010 by Brown Shuga
No, that’s just a show’s name darling, sorry!
So this is ETV’s answer to SABC 1′s Society? The channel sold it to me as their local version of Sex And The City. Heheh I can’t wait!

eerrrr.. .guys, I don’t usually do this but I’m lazy tonight and very tired so can I please just tell you what the press release says about the show? LOL
I promise to give you MY thoughts as soon as I’ve seen the first episode!! I promise!!! All I can say right now is that it will be difficult for this show to come close to the love I feel for Society. The ETV Publicist tells me that this is way better than Society! Well, wait and see.
Here is what ETV said:
4PLAY (Sex Tips for girls) – Background
4 play is essentially about the relationships between AND WITHIN THE LIVES OF 4 women (3 x black + 1 x white) in their 30’s.
- Nox (Kgomotso Christopher) is unhappily married to a wealthy philanderer. With two young children, private school fees, a luxury vehicle and a mansion in Sandton, she feels trapped in her marriage – frightened to leave it but frightened to be in it too.
- Danny (Tiffany Jones) (white female) is single and ambitious. She hides her loneliness behind work and clothes.
- Amira (Mbali Maphumulo) is an aspirant singer, although at her age it seems unlikely that she will be successful.
- Noma (Portia Gumede) A single parent to a teenage son, is disillusioned about love.
Essentially, they all want the same thing. Love. Lots of it. Deep, fulfilling love.
How they get it, or not, is the subject of this drama series.
We journey with them as they encounter the meaning of “relationships” across all spheres e.g. mother & child, husband & wife, husband & lover, boyfriend & girlfriend, and g.friend.
We follow the various characters through each of their relationships and in THEIR perception of what relationships should /could/would be.
Should Amira settle for an abusive man? Should Nox stay in her unhappy marriage – where she could be at risk of contracting HIV?
Has Noma met Mr Right or Mr Right Now? Should Danny accept being a mistress? And where the hell is Mr Right?
Set mainly in Noma’s, hair-dressing salon in the Northern Suburbs of Johannesburg, ,it is here that the weekly Sex Tips for Girls are born.
At times funny, always a little irreverent, and more often than not, heart-stoppingly honest tips,
The series aims for talk-ability among both men and women of all age-groups. It is not all fun, however it also reaches high drama and high stakes.. At its heart, it is intensely resonant.
Written by women and driven by extensive research, the series aims for extremely high production values, and more than a little dose of glamour and style, and of course lots of hair!
Catch the first episode on the 2nd February 2010 at 9pm on etv. Tuesdays will never be the same…
Well, guess we’ll see in on 2nd February then:-)
P.S. Hope they really do talk about sex. In a sexy kinda way, of cos!

Phathu Makwarela on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 6:17 am
The publicity stills dont inspire me much, how can u do a show up sex and not hire sexy actors…LOL
Jackie on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 7:09 am
But they dont look sexy!
Double Standards on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 7:51 am
I have to agree, coudnt they get actresses that scream sexy, dramatic and alluring, these are just dull unknown characters, but lets wait and see
khafo on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 7:55 am
different characters and personalities……..will wait and see
MaBusi on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 8:05 am
Wow, can’t wait…
Gee on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 8:13 am
@Double Standards
We need fresh new faces on our screens hle.
I will wait and see. Phela with ETV you can never really know what to expect.
Those stories what what were a total waste.
I am looking forward to it…
The purple dress the white lady is wearing is from Edgars. lol
Enkosi on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 8:16 am
Portia Gumede looks like she’s lost a bit of weight, andithi she’s looking sexy kodwa. That one with a busy outfit with leggings looks like a drag queen. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Dladla on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 8:40 am
I should think “actresses that scream sexy” failed to deliver, that’s why they didn’t use them Double Standards. Don’t you think?
Now, I suggest we wait and see what these four beautiful women have to deliver, and then we can judge.
Personally, I think they are sexy. But, not in the way many of you define sexy (not that I want to know you definition).
Anyway, doesn’t society play on Tuesday at 20:30-21:30? Please help me remember because if I’m right, I fail to see how I’m going to juggle the two.
MaBusi on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 8:44 am
@Dladla – Society is 20h30 to 21h00..
Dladla on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 9:20 am
Enkosi MaBusi… I’ll be watching it then.
Double Standards on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 9:24 am
and the blue dress is from Truworths, i bought my mom a similar dress, in a different colour
Its fine Gee, they had better rise up to the occassion
Double Standards on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 9:28 am
@Dladla, ke a go kwa, and i didnt mean my statement in a bad way, just that I’m still struggling to marry the actresses to the characters, and i’m not succeding, hopefully they will prove me wrong
Kiki on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 9:29 am
lol @ Phathu….good observation though.
MphoNka on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 9:35 am
Oh no, another “waiting to exhale”, Girlfriends & soul food. I hope ETV got Tyler Perry to produce and direct.
On the real, I’m really getting sick and tired of these shows that show woman to be desperately looking for love. They make woman seem cheap, unfulfilled and uncomplete.
The only good think about the cast is that it’s balanced. a fully figured woman (I like) and a white woman le mkhaba.
Phathu Makwarela on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 12:02 pm
I think most producers forget that TV is a visual medium… we see and whatever we see my please the eye…i am sorry, none of these women give me a reason to tune in and watch…they are all plain. If its about sex, i must want to see them have sex, talk about sex – the have to seduce me to watch them…now all they do is look bloated. If u wanna watch a real gud show, tune into American shows – there is never bad casting…
Dladla on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 1:45 pm
Wow Phathu… American spirit in ya’
Explain what you mean by “all plain” Phathu. Did you expect them to reveal flesh or be all slim?
What do you mean by ‘bloated’?
And to think we, as SAcans, are working towards creating a better nation.
Double Standards on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 2:27 pm
@Dladla, different strokes for different okes, honestly speaking none of those ladies say to me, ‘set a reminder or u will miss out”, they might be sexy to u, they are not to some of us, they might be appealing to u, they are not to some of us, but u gotta agree that Sexy is associated with sex appeal, beauty(to a certain extent) and yes a bit of flesh would not have hurt them, u seem to be taking this personal, people have their own preferences and these girls are just not doing it for some of us
Sthe on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 2:37 pm
People of accuse Etv of not delivering Proudly SA shows and when the channel does so,we are too quick 2 judge.I’l b waiting 4 da show to debut, anyway,it’s good that e is taking advantage of the 9pm slot coz there trully aint nothing better to watch at that time(4 free 2 air channels that is).Great going e,looking 4ward to more dramas in the future
Sthe on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 2:40 pm
Oops…that’s OFTEN after people…apologies
Ke Gay on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 3:11 pm
now why on earth would we want sexy actresses to portray typical life in Joburg North of the rich, wannabe and nton’nton’? I love how these women represent what i see when i stroll in sandton…
And the “drag queen” as pointed out by someone; that screams salon queen and i hope she’s the salon owner (the costume designer would’ve nailed the look to a T!) – it screams flamboyant which is what every show needs, a flamboyant anchor!
Mpho – i think more shows like this should be pumped out. We need one about straight men, gay men, try-sexuals, pansexuals, DL-brothers and and and – nothing is more exciting than getting into the lives of others in a scripted manner (we do not need anything with the same ingredients as Big Brother, Generations and the yawny types).
I am very excited about this and hope it’s as successful as society and home Affairs (my current obsessions)
Bee on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 3:20 pm

Dontannoythecrazyperson on Tue, 19th Jan 2010 11:17 am
It would be such a good idea for all the people who are critising the women in this show to put their own portfolio pictures on this site for all of us to have a look at . Im sure we are all going to be so shocked at the perfection that will be presented to us! I mean to have such judgemental and critical assesments of 4 women you have never met or seen in real life you have all gotta be ‘PERFECT’. What is so strange is that people who critisize and judge are normally very insecure in themselves and their own abilities so its very confusing why all you perfect people are judging and critisizing??? The definition of sexy varies greatly from person to person, but most people would agree that there are some common qualities in a “sexy” person.Image: A person who is sexy would have a high self-image, and others would view them as having so. Face it, someone who doesn’t groom, brush their teeth, use underarm deodorant, etc… would not be very sexy to most people.
Confidence: Simply stated, someone who is sexy needs to be confident. They have to believe in what they are doing. Someone with no confidence in himself or herself allows themselves to be easily abused by others, which is not sexy.
Attitude: Someone sexy, in a sense, also has a good outlook on life. They can also take some helpful criticism and get something out of it. No one wants to be around a negative person.( funny all the people above being negative are the ones talking about who is and who isnt sexy …ha ha ) …….Seems to me ladies that you all fit the above criteria and quite honestly I couldnt do what you do so I think you all gorgeous and I admire your courage to take on this show because of all the ignorant, insecure , critical ,small parted men and fat as?”#$d women of South Africa!! All the people critising you should do better …..wait I forgot – they are perfect!
blu on Tue, 19th Jan 2010 1:31 pm
i hope this is not Vusi Twala’s work

Guys Mbali Maphumulo (the lady in the busy outfit ) is a seasoned actress, been doing work on the US for quite a while, hence she is not known here ekhaya. That picture doesn’t even do her an justice, she is a very beautiful, sexy and talented woman
glenda on Wed, 24th Feb 2010 12:59 pm
I cant believe the a-holes at SABC. such hype for 4play and good marketing, billboards, interviews, then they take it off for the stoopid soccer for a couple of weeks. why didnt they take the wrestling off? We were just getting into it when it vanished. Who is the idiot that did this?
