We So Messed Up!

It’s so difficult being me.

I have been blogging for 3,5 years now & never, in that time have I ever had to apologize for fabricating a story or spicing it up so much that it was almost a fabrication. My readers, especially those who have been following my blogging career since TVSA, know this. There have been many times where I took on tabloids for publishing “lies” about South African celebrities & I did that because I value honesty & love our “celebs”.  I am very opinionated, sometimes in matters that I know nothing about but I don’t make things up just to attract readers. I don’t need to.

This is why I am hurt. Hurt that just when I start with my site, my own little curious baby who promised that she would give celebrities a platform to react to the tabloids, fabrications are attached to my name.

On Monday, 20th January 2010 we published an article by Jozi Insider called “Jozi Insider At Poppy’s Party.” When I received the post I knew I wasn’t comfortable with it because I “was” friends with about 90% of the people mentioned in that post. After much debating, I decided that I would publish the post, in the hope that those mentioned would understand that ijob yijob & not hold me responsible for JI’s comments, even if published on my site. I thought, “Anyway, there is a disclaimer on JC and it does state that publishing other contributors’ work does not mean I always agree with them. Besides, we can’t be an entertainment site and have holy cows” (This is a topic on its own)

I clicked the “publish” button.  I shouldn’t have.

Later during that day, as the reactions and feedback started reaching me, it emerged, beyond reasonable doubt that Jozi Insider had fabricated stuff.  “Dawg GP” did not leave Poppy’s party with “some chick”; Anele did not go home with Sizwe, this was an assumption by JI, they were headed to McDonalds. Dineo Ranaka was not even there to begin with & a whole lot of other stuff that I will not go into.

DJ Fresh (Dawg GP), as a married man, was especially hurt, disgusted and very embarrassed by these false accusations. Just as we all would be, if lies were published about us.

BBMs, messages started streaming in! I heard people were mad as hell, calling me all sorts of names. JI is an anonymous writer and I, as owner of the site decided to publish the story so therefore had to take the blame. This I understood but fok, I switched off my phone.

I could go on and on but the bottom line is that because of that blog, people were hurt, families were threatened, trust was broken, friendships were terminated and Just Curious became the enemy.

It is for these reasons that I have decided to part ways with the Jozi Insider. Jozi Insider will no longer be writing for Just Curious. This is painful because he is an amazing guy and a very talented writer. Writers spice things up all the time but unfortunately JI got carried away and there are casualties. He made a mistake, just as I made a bad judgment by publishing the article. Yes people make mistakes all the time, but the only problem here is that the trust relationship has been broken and if the relationship continues, this experience would sort of affect his confidence, he’d be forced to be much “nicer” & therefore lose his cheeky, writing tone, which were the things I admired about him. It would also be impossible for me to trust any of his work in future so this, according to me, is the best thing to do. Just like Bra Jomo Sono, I can’t fire myself but trust me, valuable and very hard lessons, I have learnt.

I therefore sincerely apologize to Poppy, because her party was really beautiful (I stayed for an hour & even met her dad L) and I did not mean for my site to be the one to spoil memories of that incredible day.

My apologies to everyone who was falsely accused in the article.  Fresh, Anele, Dineo, guys: I am terribly sorry, that is not what Just Curious is about.

Gossip is such a small part of what we write of  and I also apologize to our readers; please do not let this one mistake wipe off every good thing that you have ever read on JC.  Yes, the name is Just Curious, not Bafana Bafana but nathi we are still learning so we need your support.

A big thank you to all the friends & readers who emailed/tweeted/DM’d, worrying about our well being during the whole mess. Your continued support is appreciated more than you could ever imagine and I mean this from the bottom of my heart.

In closing: I accept full responsibility for this and I pray that the damage is not permanent.

    Wow, im disappointed about the way JI decided to dupe us… His writing style was off the chain. I hope ur “friends” forgive u and understand that these kinda things happen, even though i know it tends to be a whole new experience when it happens to u. I will not lie, i did enjoy the story but i feel cheated. Wena Brown Shuga i salute u 4 being the bigger person and admitting fault + accepting responsility. U did the right thing by laying low a lil coz arguing with people while filled with emotions, esp rage, can be dangerous. I hope Fresh, Poppy, Anele, Dineo etc see past this and make well… Il continue to support u and the site… XO XO

    firstly to Brown Suga, well I can imagine it took a lot of strength for you to write this although I still dont think you should apologize, but being accountable for your “employees”..LOL..is what makes a great person /leader so I hope JI is OK..and I dont think he really anticipated or meant any harm and I still think the fabrications came from “some” already exisiting assumptions/rumors about some of the mentioned celebs, however thats not the point..they just should not have been written…

    I think it is very big of you to write this apology BS, but still have an issue with the whole thing.
    I find (most) of this apology entirely unnecessary, as the article was juvenile and to be honest – I never believed most of it from the beginning e.g. Pabi being lesbian (with the usual disclaimer of “So what if she was”), Anele went home with Sizwe, did not really believe anything was going on between them, I mean really. And so what if people were drunk – it’s a party.
    The point I am trying to get at is, I have seen worse things written about people, and it seems like a primary school game to “unfriend” someone just because in the course of their business, an article about such petty things was written about them.
    I have no idea what kind of friends these are (as I do not know them personally), but can imagine they are as fickle as the industry they work in.Perhaps they thought of your website as a place where there would be unending praise of them.
    So in the end, I’m more disappointed in the fact that from reading this apology, it looks like in future we can look forward to blog posts that pussy-foot around all of the people that are your “friends”, and we can thus look forward to articles talking about how great Anele, Bonang, Sizwe and their sidekick Khaya etc is. What fun….not.
    Brownshuga, you are awesome, and please don’t feel the need to water down the edge that has made you successful thus far, in order to be in the “in-crowd”.

[prove that ish with pics] otherwise don’t publish it..
    His tone is friggen great..and i know u don’t want your site as another gossip site, hence u even reveal your ID..

    I am actually dissapointed at all the schelbs, especially Bonang. She is such an attention seeker, nothing damaging was said bout her but she went on and on about the whole thing as if she was the ‘starring’ in the whole saga.     Sunday newspapers rites more damaging stuff bout them but they nevea make all sort of noises. They chose to be in the public eye thereby making their lives open to public scrutiny. For them to “bully” us like this is definitely not AYOBA. Take Mcintosh for example, when a not so true info was published about him he contacted the site and simply provided the correct info, an apology was printed then we all moved on.

    I think all of them are being like this simply because they know the owner of the site personnally therefore demand that she always looks out for their interest. Well hopefully the apology will help but if I was Lelo I would not want to be friends with some of them anyway.

    Did you read the above post to “hear” why I had to let my friend JI go?

    Why must everything be so freaking difficult? Frankly I”m tired of all the whining. I do this, people complain, I try correct the situation, they complain again.     All I ask is that people read the above post and take it for what it is. I am tired guys, I work my ass off on this site, for your enjoyment, no one comes from heaven to pay me for it and this is the thank you I get. I’m not saying you must all agree with me all the time but damn, can you at least try to understand where I’m coming from? (This is directed to the people who are complaining)

    I do realise that this “celeb friends” thing is not working, I saw that and I will handle it. In my own way.

    Now if you don’t like Just Curious, do not come to the website. It will be sad for me but I honestly can’t force it down anyone’s throat.

    Another thing that people need to remember is that gossip and entertainment has got nothing to do with journalism ethics. The only thing that is journalism is news and feature, now that needs balance but gossip and entertainment pieces have got shit to do with journalism.     KHAYA..i dont know him personally, i just know what he does, i respect his work and he is a huge huge inspiration to me, as is BS.

    INFACT, The only thing that fascunates me about the “celebrities” in question is that they are somehow in HIS circle (i dont know much about what they do or how they do it etc and i dont csare…my prerogative of course). Fact that they are HIS friends made me think there must be something about them beyond the shallow idea of what a celebrity is in our world.
    I celebrate no one…but since thats a choice,i’d celebrate HIM any day,HE are worthy of it, HE are worthy of fame in MY books. But ofcourse the world celebrates dilo tse di senang mmereko.

    I think Brown Sugar should tell us the truth. I think there is no Jozi Insider. Jozi Insider is Brown Sugar!!! She writes under that name to avoid the backlash coming to her if things turn sour, as in this case. A lot of writers for publications do that.
