Brainwashed By Avatar?
February 1, 2010 by Brown Shuga
Do I need to move with the times?
Coz I feel like I’m very old fashioned. Everyone is going on about how great this movies is and that it has “sunk” Titanic’s box office records yada yada yada… but…why??
Well, I’ve seen it and besides the blue tall people with beautiful bodies, their beautiful forest, the 3D (or is it 3G tl tl tl ) what what, is there anything you remember about the movie?

I mean, besides these images? You remember anything else?

le-movie iyaxoka maan! Akho bantu banje..

Okay, here’s my (uneducated) theory on this Avatar thing:
The only reason Avatar has made more money than Titanic, (besides the fact that movie prices are more expensive today than they were back then, which means it would still make more money even if they had sold the same amount of tickets) is because Avatar was/is SO HYPED UP (maybe Cameron & co. paid those “critics”) that EVERYBODY went to the cinema to go check it out so they can find out for themselves ukuba what is this hype all about. That’s why I went to see it, everyone was talking/tweeting/writing about it.
Why did you go see it? You liked the trailer? I doubt it coz the trailer is “tame”.
Now, if we were to turn the tables and ask, how many of these people who went to watch Avatar actually enjoyed the movie, the WHOLE movie, storyline and all, not just the “images”? Let’s ask how many of these fans were so impressed that they are even planning to buy the DVD? I’m sure the picture wouldn’t look as “great” as it does now.
Eish, it’s just that I can’t understand how a beautiful love story such as this one……….

….could be “klapped” by this….this……

Really, this movie is just plain predictable. If you haven’t seen Avatar yet, just watch a slideshow of high resolution stills from the movie and you might as well have seen it at the cinema. That’s all there is to the movie. Stru bob!
My explanation for all the people who have gone back to the cinema to watch the movie again & those who were clapping at the end?? Brainwashed! All you Avatar stans have been brainwashed ek sé, must be something they put in those goggles.
I will pray for your deliverance.

Lol, ay Lelo… *clears throat* meant, BrownShuga lol… Yithi awuyithandanga i filim qha than suggest Cameron paid journos!
Yes, there was too much hype created around the movie. Yes, the trailer was “tame”. But when I went to see it, it blew me away- the storyline was amazing. There was more to the movie than tall and beautiful blue people. They had the utmost respect of nature, unlike we, “sky people” who seek to kill and destroy.
The angle that simple haters is “why did the Na’vi require help from a white man?”. I really hate it when black people make every issue about race!
But the movie woke up the environmentalist in me. We could learn a thing or two from the uncivilised Na’vi.
I see you all!

LOlest BS…im too sick to be laughimg like this, my caregivers will stop pampering me…
OKAY..
Lenna the movie appealed to the environmentalist in me. But i love anything sci fi so thats one reason why i anticipated the movie….i did even before the 3D/3G(lol) hype…infact 2D could have sufficed for me…but ofcourse…
BUT honestly….im also a comic/anime fan-nyana…i love the Avatar anime series..so i was looking forward to Avatar: the last airbender movie based on the series…busy googling and wikipediaing and i bumped into this, the blue creatures…it stole my heart early last year….
Im sold….i’d take an alien love story anyday over a manimal(human) one….i swear i think im an extraterestrial sometyms(think the flu meds are taking their tol on me now)….
Brown Shuga on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 12:16 am
Lol! Get well soon GA!!! Mwaaaah!
Hayi, I forgot all about that environment story, the minute I walked out of cinema. Gudnite guys, chat tomoro

BS, thanks for confirming my gut feelings. I friend of mine got freebies on Saturday and asked me to come and watch the ‘A’ word movie with him. I said to him, I watched the clips on ‘You Tube’ and it didn’t match the hype – so I’m not interested! In addition, I also said: “Some movies are just not for Black-Africans kinda stuff!” Obviously not all them. Off he went, when he came back his first line was “Eish ntanga, what a rip off that was! I nearly fell asleep!” Sometimes crap can sell, as long as you have good strategy to market it. Paying critics might be another option. It works on everything – sales is all about how good you sell your product no matter how good/bad it is, and that’s what happened with Avatar. People are only talking about 3D this, 3D that…(3D is not a movie)! Brainwashed by Avatar? No me, thanks!
Lela on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 2:03 am

xaluva on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 7:26 am
I watched this movie before I caught on to the hype around.
A friend went to see it twice n reccommended I go see it.
I was reluctant at first.
After seeing it, in 2D nogal, I was impressed! I knew then it would be big.
But I didn’t fathom this…
This said that this movie aims to promote the fact we all inter-connected somehow.
Connected to the earth, tree, animals etc.
That notion might seem banal to some…but this movie deserves everythin good dats comin to it!

after all the hype i went to see it, in 3D nogal (still have to back to request my change!) – i enjoyed the special effects of 3D and still have no idea what the movie was about as i slept through most of it.
Sasha Fierce on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 8:02 am

Thought this movie was beyond incredible… period!
kittykat on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 8:56 am
Went to see Avatar last night and I must say that it’s the most amazing movie that has ever been created!!! It was more than just the graphics that made it a spectacular movie, the story of the connection of all species is what struck me! We “sky people” take so much for granted… I’m planning on seeing it again this weekend!
Curious Indeed on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 8:59 am
Hhayi kabi mara they look like Michael Jackson only difference is that their TALLER & BLUER!
ntshepeng on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 9:36 am
got a pirated copy, lost concentration halfway through the movie and figured maybe i must watch the 3D version to ‘get it’. I don’t hate it, i just didn’t feel why there was so much hype around it either.
Lahvee on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 9:54 am
I loved the movie coz it took you to another world (with blue and tall people
) and maybe coz I am an Environmentalist by profession
. The angle of the movie is different period. As much as I hate hyped out stuff, i went there with a clear mind and loved it.
sponono on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 9:58 am
I understand BS’s point – while the movie deserves praise for its creativity and environmental awareness angle..IT IS FORGETABLE…the love story is just BLAH BLAH…so most people went to see it for the imagery, and the tree huggers loved it for that environment angle and yes its breathtakin especially on 3d..but once you’ve left the cinema after an hour, its not excatly something you’ll be discussing with your friends….you might just say “oh it was beautiful”,…but that would be the end of the conversation..in my experience..unlike Titanic..which was a real gem to talk about for days..LOL…….
Nna ke Maditaba.. on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 11:02 am
Aga man, these kinda movies just dont do it for me.I think its overated.I’ll rather watch TITANIC(again) – at least i know i wont lose concentration halfway through the movie.
Lwandie on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 12:45 pm
hayi ke uAvatar did zilch!! for me,save for the 3D phenomenon, those blue elf eared darlings and the sound track, I did not leave the cinema feeling any more greater respect for nature than I already have.I’m actually looking forward to watching “The Princess and the Frog” way more lol
I guess in the words of Ntsepang I am not their target market
LYNNY081 on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 12:47 pm
I saw the trailer on Top Billing and went to check it out…ok sure the storyline was not the greatest but the passion they displayed and the perfomance did the trick for me…I really enjoyed and its true what they say…asifani.
Monchooza on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 12:48 pm
the only thing i enjoyed about this movie was the fact that it was the first time ngibukela i movie kwi 3D cinema, these kind of movies ezabelungu maan….too fictional….just wondering why james cameroon took so many years to make such nonsense..
Bonsia on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 12:48 pm
I fell asleep, nothing to write home about! It predictable
The SportLite on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 1:03 pm
Apart from the Computer Generated Images – the script was quite predictable. It’s all been done before – two people from the different sides of the fence falling in love. The story is as old as Romeo & Juliet …or even worse Romeo Must Die.
Entertaining? – YES.
Timeless? Classic? – Err…probably NOT .
After all the excitement from the visual stimulation dies down – the movie is quite forgettable.

Naomi on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 2:36 pm
Sorry for going off topic, mara is there a particular reason why JC still hasn’t done an article on JUB JUB, HIS PENIS, AND HIS DRAMATIC EXIT ??
Gobsmacked on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 2:52 pm
Oh thanks BS, these are my sentiments exactly!!!! I remember I was trying to recruit my non twitter friend to go see it(twitter hype convinced me to go see it, abantu bayazi baxa izinto pha). They were on some hayi wethu we are not going to watch blue funny people like looking things!!!!
I recruited my baby sister and went!! After the movie and the lights came on I sat there waiting for the movie to start, I assumed that I propobaly dosed offed and missed the climax even my little sister seconded me on that one!!!! The poor child is still waiting for this AVATAR i’ve been tripping about!!!
I personally feel that the main issue is the fact that, that movie is way too overated!!! If people had just shut their traps I wouldn’t have been that dissapointed!!!! On second thought I wouldn’t have even watched it to begin with!!!!!!
Brown Shuga on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 3:04 pm

Surprisingly you are also making a hype about the movie, proof that it made a lasting impression on you too – LOL. This movie is for audiophiles & videophiles. It’s not only about the storyline. Just like the Titanic there’s romance, technology & yes the story. If you watched it at iMax you don’t need anaglyph 3D glasses like other movie theaters I won’t mention. The sound is better than any movie you’ve ever seen TrueHD Dolby 6.1 configuration. CG effects are the best in the world with the most creative camera technique in HD. I do agree Titanic was a great movie too. I will definitely get me a blue-ray, I enjoy a crisp & accurate sound with a clean clear picture detail. This is a technology benchmark !

Argh….Avatar was OK….but I would not say i NEED to own its DVD…no thank you…glad I watched of cause…albeit a tad bit too long for my liking.
(besides the fact that movie prices are more expensive today than they were back then, which means it would still make more money even if they had sold the same amount of tickets)….ummm I don’t particularly agree with this view….I am certain they take inflation into consideration before they come up with such conclusion……I would be very suprised if I were learn that they only take the actual figure (as this would not make sense at all)….so in my view…it is possible that the movie ‘fetched’ more bucks than the one of our beloved Sinking Ship
GA on Wed, 3rd Feb 2010 1:46 pm
Im with Sbozh through and through…
And then there is this infatuation i have with the idea of extraterestrial activities….i just zone out at any given moment and allow myslef to be captivated by the possibilities and the implications…the positive implications ofcourse besides the general idea of alien earth takeovers…
So Avatar added some extra adventures to my fantacies…planets krypton and cybertron have competition this days, i tend to disapepear into Pandora and hang out with the Na’vi peeps….
And nooo…i dont need prayers, escapism at its oddest but hey..it works…
