This Week In Sports…
February 25, 2010 by The SportLite
It’s Friday again – which means that us sports fans have a lot to look forward to over the next three days. Before we focus the “SportLite” on the weekend. Let’s acknowledge some major stuff that happened during the week.
First and foremost – The SportLite and JustCurious would like to congratulate Supersport United for clinching their third successive Premier Soccer League title.
Yes, Supersport is the Egypt of the PSL – get over it. I’m still going to throw my heaps of praise on Gavin Hunt and his troops when I do a roundup of the entire PSL campaign…soon.
Next on the list – we congratulate Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar for a magnificent innings which saw him become the first MAN (cos a woman did it first) – to score 200 runs in a One Day International. Sachin scored those runs against South Africa so at first it was painful to watch – but the pain quickly progressed to numbness – and then full admiration.
I only watched the last half of his double-hundred but I can honestly say he played every single cricket shot I’ve ever seen. In fact – I’d go as far as saying he even invented some new ones. It was quite something to watch this Little Maestro from Mumbai showing his dominance over all kinds of deliveries that were thrown at him. Short , full, fast, slow, spin, swing – they were all given the same “get outta here” treatment – no discrimination whatsoever. I’m still in awe.
THE WEEKEND MASH-UP
Next weekend will see the last round of PSL matches. The summit of the log has been decided – but the fight to avoid automatic relegation has reached boiling point. Despite their impressive win over Sundowns – Cosmos still find themselves rooted at the bottom of the log trailing Aces by a single point – which means a win in their away match against Swallows could see them leapfrogging Aces to grab that playoff spot.
Amazayoni have to travel to Cape Town to face Ajax knowing that they need nothing but a win to secure that lifeline of taking part in the playoffs. It doesn’t guarantee PSL action for next season – but hey it’s better than being sent straight back to the National First Division.
Rugby:
There has been mixed fortunes so far for the South African teams taking part in the Super 14. The Bulls and Stormers have been impressive, as expected – winning both of their opening matches in style – and both are expected to continue in the same fashion as they swap partners for this weekend’s dance.
The Cheetahs have won one game in their two outings – with the Sharks and Lions having no luck so far. Things are about to get tougher for the Sharks as they start the first leg of their 5-week away tour – one which will see them travelling back and forth between New Zealand and Australia more times than a confused South African expat.
Their first game away game will be against a strong Crusaders side that is still nursing some bruised egos after they were brought down to earth by the Reds last weekend. I really don’t know if that makes the situation better or worse for the Sharks.
Well, here’s a list of fixtures that matter to South Africans. For a full list visit the official Super 14 website. (www.super14.com)

Update:
Super 14 action in Christchurch, New Zealand.
HALF TIME SCORE
Crusaders 10 – Sharks 6
SCORERS:
Crusaders: Try – Zac Guildford. Conversion – Daniel Carter. Penalty – Daniel Carter.
The Sharks: Penalties – Rory Kockott (2)
The Sharks need to have faith and stop kicking the ball aimlessly. They can win this game is they try hard enough.
The Crusaders are not looking that great at all.

@Cleve2
Sachin started international cricket at Age 17 – so yeah he’s been the household name for almost 2 decades and still look pretty good for a 36 year old.
I tried going through the list of records that he currently holds – didn’t even make it halfway… CRAZY!
@Kazisongo
I prefer the tight finish. Yeah it gives the newspapers the perfect opportunity to use their favourite word – CHOKERS – but it’s better than being hammered.

Congratulations to Supersport, I’m a Pirates fan but I’m tired of these overrated players who play in front of thousands of fans everywhere they go but they don’t perform. Supersport is a team with no stars and no fans but they do their thing on the field.
I don’t know ttoo much about cricket but I know the name Tendulkar and I know that getting 200 is a big thing. So well done Tendulkar,
As for rugby I’m a Stormers fan but born and bred in Durban.
I’m happy we have new players like Habana and Fourie and this time we are going to make it for the semifinals. Sorry Sharks HA HA HA

brilliant preview/review. I’m a lazy reader but this had me reading word for word. As for my team chiefs, the less said the better.
Brown Shuga on Sun, 28th Feb 2010 4:25 pm
Congratulations to Supersport, my other team….am really proud of them, they did well.
Tendulkar, I have no idea what that’s all about….
