TopTV Launches In Mzansi

topMay 2010 does not only signify my XXth Birthday & the premiere of Sex And The City 2 but it is also the month when we will be introduced to a new pay channel by On Digital Media (OND) called TOPTV!

Now there isn’t a confirmed date for the actual launch but they say the launch will be staggered throughout the month… which to me screams “we don’t wanna overcommit and under deliver”. No problem with that…

Here is what we know about TopTV so far:

  • TopTV will introduce 34 “new-to-the market” channels, nine music video channels and 25 new music audio services.
  • TopTV has secured programming and channels from household names such as Fox, Warner, Disney, CBS, and Discovery, amongst others. (I heard rumours of us finally getting BET too. Am praying that this is true because I don’t understand why DSTV has given Nigeria & Ghana access to BET but not us)
  • TopTV will offer subscribers seven different pricing options ranging from R99 to R249 per month.
  • e.g. For R99 per month, subscribers will have access to over 20 channels, providing coverage of general entertainment, news, sport, movies and gospel, to name a few.
  • TopTV Promises Quality TV at Affordable Prices for Consumers
  • You won’t get the same channels that are on DSTV but they will be offering subscribers similar genres of programmes.
  • Subscribers will require a setup box that is MPEG4 DVB S2 compliant. These will be available through major retailers nearer to the launch.
  • While ODM will have local content, ODM will not be commissioning local content at the outset.

Their management looks like ou toppies but I love love love their logo. It’s very cool. Awesome colours.

Well, I’m very excited about TopTV, they must just make sure that SABC channels (especially Generations), is available on their thingy and then they’ll REALLY be competing with DSTV. Oh, and they must have that Porn channel DSTV was “qhosheling” other children about…

    Thanx for the info BS, usisthandwa. I’ve been waiting for BET for a looong time so I hope uzobakhona. Eish my worry is affordability now,coz I want to subscribe to that ;so it will be the R249 plus DSTV’s R520 (as from next month) yhooo almost R800 on satelite TV, hay andikho sho shame!But anyway DSTV seems boring nowadays with the numerous repeats but if I were to unsubscribe from Multichoice I’d miss MNET, E! and MTV…eish I need to cohabit!

    I have seen the entire outline of what they are going to be providing, its nothing new. Here where the flaw is, they are going to give us American channels…which have the same content that M-NET already provides.

    Its always a good thing to see a new player in the market and I hope they provide healthy competition for DSTV etc-their logo just looks so happy-kinda tele one would want to return t after a crazy kick-ass day.

    hey bms (bonangmshame) which one is maggie benedict..and which one is Dezi…i only recognized Khabonina and Rennee but the show was great I liked the part where the wife called whilest the girl is under the table collecting i-diloz…he he he he she’s thinkin dang i just got F*ckd twice and she’s got the wife on the phone and diloz on the other hand…i’ll be watching next week..(Khabonina is trying to pull a Ntsiki though not sure if I’m gonna like her i hope its not gonna be a little bit OTT)

    abt the question abt the decoders….last year sumtym there was that case where they all (these new broadcasters that r soon going to set up house) went to court to protest having to make subscribers use different decoders and satellite dishes. Icasa ruled that because Multichoice owns the hardware it was entitled to some sort of remuneration frm these different broadcasters and that it would be unreasonable to expect subscribers to have diff decoders for each diff broadcaster. Lets hope it still holds true.
