Two More Trophies Up For Grabs

March 2, 2010 by The SportLite

The ABSA Premiership trophy is probably locked up in Supersport’s cabinet now but for the teams that didn’t finish as well as they would’ve liked – there are two more trophies on offer. Winning one or both would certainly help them get back on their supporters good books.

The draw for the Telkom Knockout was conducted today – and all 16 PSL teams now know who they have to beat to proceed to the next round. The tournament is set to run from the 13th of March until the 10th of April. With Bafana Bafana set to hold camps in preparation for the World Cup – it’s difficult to predict which teams will be strong enough to challenge for the honours.

Last 16:

Ajax Cape Town vs Moroka Swallows

Orlando Pirates vs Bloemfontein Celtics

Bidvest Wits vs Jomo Cosmos

Mpumalanga Black Aces vs Supersport United

Amazulu vs Maritzburg United

Santos vs Kaizer Chiefs

Free State Stars vs Mamelodi Sundowns

Golden Arrows vs Platinum Stars

The teams that will participate in the Nedbank Cup have also been confirmed – but the draw is yet to be conducted. The tournament will run from the 14th of April until the 22nd of May. The Nedbank Cup is unique because it allows 8 teams from the SAFA Regional Leagues and 8 teams from the National First Division to bump shoulders with their PSL counterparts.

Just think of last year’s impressive run by the University of Pretoria which left Jimmy Tau hearing imaginary whistles and led to a number of Tuks players being signed up by PSL sides.  It’s the classic David vs Goliath story – unknown players with nothing to lose and so much to play for – a lot of young stars will be born.

NFD Representatives:

Thanda Royal Zulu, FC Cape Town, Ikapa Sporting, Vasco Da Gama, University of Pretoria, Nathi Lions, Black Leopards and Winners Park.

SAFA Leagues Representatives:

Island FC, Tower United, Wings United, M Tigers FC, Als Puk Tawana FC, Parkhurst United, Peace lovers and FC Royals.

Looking forward to the draw for this one.

So what’s it gonna be? Two more trophies for Supersport or maybe even Sundowns to take to Pretoria or a chance for the Soweto sides to redeem themselves?

Can we expect dark horses from KZN or Cape Town to come from nowhere and take the silverware all the way to the to the coast?

Both cups are going to Naturena and there’s no need to discuss this. We were unlucky with the league but the boyz will not make the same mistakes. We need these cups we can’t finish the season with nothing likee Pie-rats.

Orlando Pirates vs Bloemfontein Celtics – This is a really tough one, I want both teams to win… but tough one, we all know the Bucks will win
