Cricket Fever to warm you up!

There’s so much buzz surrounding the 2010 Fifa World Cup – so much so that we almost forgot about another international competition – the 2010 ICC World Twenty20. This is the World Cup of 20-over cricket – and it’s going to be explosive!

The tournament, hosted by West Indies, will run from the 30th of April (yes today) until the 16 of May.

The Proteas (South African team) will play their Group matches on the following dates (Supersport & SABC 3):

2 May: India vs South Africa  – 15h30

5 May: Afghanistan vs South Africa – 19h30

The top two teams in each group will progress to the next stage.

Despite being one of the best cricket teams in the world – the Proteas have never won a World Cup tournament – a feat that has earned them their second nickname – “ The Chokers”. The SportLite would like to encourage you to refer to our team as the Proteas and nothing else – whether they win or lose.

For more information on the players that have been selected – check squad profile HERE .

We wish Graeme Smith and the boys the best of luck for the competition – and hopefully they’ll return with the trophy this time. Go PROTEAS!!!

    @LeeM – Hey …look…over there…what is that? Oh…basic cricket lessons… :-)

@GA – there’s no such thing as “too much sports”…it’s like saying “too much sex” (I can use that word here, right?)

@Lolo55 @ugogal – Proteas all the way! Howzaaaatttt?!

all the best to Proteas and Smith. he said no choking this time too bad wont be able to watch their game with India

  10. BMS on Fri, 30th Apr 2010 9:50 am

Smith… Don’t like him ever since he made Mickey Arthur leave.

But all the best to the boys. They play well, until they get to the semi’s though… better them than Bafana

India is surely gonna win this. With the advantage of the IPL at hand, 90% of their players are in good form and have had enough match practice. I cannot believe that Wayne Parnell is not included in the squad. I dont even want to begin the dreaded “Transformation” topic. That squad does not reflect the true demographics of SA. Where is Tsotsobe?

Anyway, if they loose, i wouldnt be surprised. We’re sick of same deadwood players representing us in International tourneys. Biff has failed us for years and he aint gonna perform miracles this time. I truly love Gibbs though, cant wait to see him blast 666666 like he did a few years ago.

hhhhaaaa I can’t believe I forgot this. Thanks for the reminder thanks to the World Cup I forgot about my beloved sport.

Proteas nabo, hhayi they are worse than Bafana Bafana coz they have more than enough potential.

    I still love them anyways.

  13. The Sportlite on Fri, 30th Apr 2010 9:57 am

@BMS- Well, hate him or love him – Biff is a great player and a great captain. I don’t know what happened behind closed doors. We all know what the skipper is capable of (when he’s on song). I prefer him playing for us than against us.

@JoziOutsider – I feel you on the “transformation” (or lack thereof) – I mean Loots always left out in the cold – the dude is one of the most consistent power-hitters.

Now this is my sport..infact i have so much hope that our Proteas will stand a good chance of taking it

  15. The Sportlite on Fri, 30th Apr 2010 10:01 am

I know Loots is part of THIS squad – but if it was up to me he’d be a regular in the ODI squad as well.

  16. ntshepeng on Fri, 30th Apr 2010 10:39 am

kwakwkakwakkwkawkkkwkwkka @ the absence of ‘regulars’ today. Sorry sportlite, for going off topic on your blog…

  17. ExGeeSwag on Fri, 30th Apr 2010 11:15 am

Hau kante they dont get tested for these stuff??

  22. Maggs on Fri, 30th Apr 2010 3:20 pm

i am only kidding, it is just at times he will be awesome hitting six sixes and the next match he will be out with a poor score so he is an on and off type of a player.

  24. George422 on Fri, 30th Apr 2010 8:59 pm

  25. kazisongo on Sun, 2nd May 2010 7:45 pm

    Mnxm, chokers!

  26. George422 on Sun, 2nd May 2010 7:55 pm

The bowling let us down, the batters probably left it a bit too late to start attacking bt m happy wit them, time to regroup and beat afghanistan convincingly

  27. The Sportlite on Thu, 6th May 2010 2:32 pm

Yes, The PROTEAS lost their first match against India – losing is never fun – but that wasn’t a big deal. The boys bounced back to demolish Afghanistan last night. Soft target, I know – but we’re through to the Super Eight (that’s all that matters).

Well, no more easy games now – we start with New Zealand TONIGHT at 1930. We HAVE TO win this one – at all costs.

Again, good luck to the boys – make us proud.

  28. Cijimpi on Thu, 6th May 2010 2:44 pm

  29. The Sportlite on Thu, 6th May 2010 2:58 pm

    LOL – @ Cijimpi

We still have two more games to play after tonight’s match – so don’t rush to OR Tambo just yet. :-D
