April 19, 2010 by Brown Shuga

A pick of the May 2010 Mag Covers!

521321001271062173

5FM DJ Anele Mdoda shares her grand plans.

Marice

SA’s top international models Candice Swanepoel, Behati Prinsloo and Heidi Verster hooked up with Marie Claire editor, Aspasia Karras, in New York City to shoot this cover.

Ha ke ba tsebe but it’s a hot cover!

Gaga

There’s something about Elle Magazine and their magazine covers that screams “cool”.

Pity I still haven’t opened the one Alek Wek April issue… eish.

Jordy

It’s a magazine meant for men but I will buy it coz I love Danny Jordaan!! Plus his untidy beard looks tidy on this picture :-)

310842001270644748

I’ve only ever read this magazine once and it was really really great! I keep saying I will buy it, I will buy it.. mara tjo bathong, everytime I see it, I never have the R35 it costs. Next time.

322350001270505283

Sigh! Like seriously now, I’m tired of seeing Charlize Theron on magazine covers. What else can they tell us about her that we don’t know already? Can we like, just have a month where she’s not on a cover??

390108001271013030

This issue celebrates 7de Laan’s 10 years! Their anniversary was on 04 April. May they have many many more.

638059001270638381

My favourtie WAG ever!!! Gracing the cover of Fairlady… that “is it time to take Victoria seriously” doesn’t make it sound like they actually did an interview with her so I’ll first page through it eshopini and check before I buy it.

eerrr…abo Drum/Move/Real, nizobabona egarage when u go buy airtime. lol

  4. lwandie on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 12:59 am

Ja too many white tendancies on these covers lol *jokes*…Elle always put great thought into their covers and the glossiness just makes it super sleek…….. if FairLady are still asking whether V.B can be taken seriously, then I guess they have been living under a rock…..eeish am not feeling Destiny’s cover, that blue on blue just looks tired and Andile looks a bit uncomfortable in that shot….lol ya iDrum is my guilty pleasure, with all its outlandish stories!!

As for True Love i have cancelled my subscription bcoz i couldnt take Sophie Ndaba’s Zim orphanage days every season..Hayi i am now hooked on Destiny but will skip the May issue. I like People & Heat.

I love Destiny, but the Anele issue, I’ll pass, she looks like she is seeking a sponsor to fill that masssive gap she has and a stylist to change her 9 month old plats.

  24. kabzan on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 9:28 am

I buy Destiny a lot, but the latest with Anele, no ill pass. she’s not one of my fav peeps. The latest True Love is also boring this month, as well as Drum: if its not Generations actors, its some weird boring peeps, smh!
shem i like Soul mag, but the past 2 months its been wack, latest cover is also not that nice.

  25. poshspice on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 9:41 am

People, Heat and You are my choices..@Iconic Me love those shocking/taboo stories covered by People..

Fair Lady cover..Victoria is fabulous, but does she ever show some teeth, smile, I’ve never ever seen her laughing…she seem very cold…but they make a good couple with David and like her lots

  26. Kazisongo on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 9:42 am

    Eish I’m LSM1 so i can’t afford this mags,sorry

  27. lwandie on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 9:43 am

nuff respect to peeps who still buy True Love tjo!! mna I’m still in therapy for its traumatic effect.

  28. poshspice on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 9:46 am

Anele on Destiny Cover…am not sure if it is her posture, the dress or a need for a good push up bra that let her down..the little that I saw of her when she was hosting Strictly Come Dancing she maintained a similar style, the long necklaces and kinda similar dresses/tops…I thought magazines do a makeover to the cover person to fit the style of the magazine… or I was wrong!!

  29. poshspice on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 10:01 am

@Lwandie>>> even the destiny man has blue, but we now know blue is Ms Dhlomo’s favourite colour, remember her wedding even bride maids wore blue, and the cover with her and hubby had a blue backround…Ms Dhlomo we’ve noticed!!…I don’t have a problem with the color though..

  30. Nonny on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 10:06 am

Anele on Destiny Cover…am not sure if it is her posture, the dress or a need for a good push up bra that let her down..>>> To answer ur question, yes she was let down by that R6 loose bra that she wore and the posture emphasised the sag.

  31. SAVANAH DRY on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 10:10 am

hawu nonny leave anele’s gap alone its natural why should she change herself !!! we have enough artificial people in the industry ..

  32. Ivanka on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 10:13 am

Like you Poshspice i am a Heat and YOU girly, Cosmo is alweiz on my list as well.

Speaking of Magazines BS, was paging through a DRUM mag about a month ago *bought by a friend by the way* coz its not my fav, i came acroos uYonela Duze a.k.a Buli home affairs, TJO! hayi uyafana nawe….(my opinion)

  33. Nangs on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 10:24 am

I normally buy Destiny and True Love magazines…and ofcourse I need my dose of mgosi every now and then, so I sometimes buy Drum (depending on who is on the cover). But I must say I dont think I’ll buy this issue of Destiny with Anele…i’m just not feeling it.
Must say I’m also loving the Women’s Health covers.

  34. Lahvee on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 10:45 am

I used to buy COSMO, but I stopped buying it coz they recycle articles and you never really gain anything from COSMO. I’ll read my old ones thoroughly before i donate them to my salon!

True Love, I also stopped buying it… why was I buying it vele??

  35. Khosie on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 10:45 am

  38. Iconic on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 11:26 am

  43. bonangmubishame on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 11:59 am

Where’s GQ and Glamour??? I’m a conde nast person and the only cover that actually looks great is Fairlady and SARIE. Both Destiny’s failed miserabley. I’m sick of 2010 and Anele looks like she was trying the constipated look a la Tyra Banks, but it backfired. Badly. Elle is always boss because Jackie Burger has such a Anna Wintour quality about her, that she makes sure that her covers are BOSS!!! Rooi Rose is great too.

BS can;t you also look into the niche market mag’s, like One Small Seed, Dossier and SL??? Would make for interesting comments

  44. bonangmubishame on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 12:00 pm

Nonny, I like you… are you by any chance from newcastle???

What has Anele done to deserve COVER GIRL-I’m a subscriber but have not picked up my copy because of the the cover.

  47. zzzz on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 1:24 pm

I but Destiny every single month but noooooo shemmm, i can’t figure out how Anele landed on my special magazine’s cover, who is she anyway? Ngeke shem bayithole eyami imali this month.

  48. Nangs on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 1:24 pm

You are right SilentBloga, I also feel the same way. Really now what has she done besides being on Radio and Strictly Come Dancing, or are we just hating? lol. Cover girl material needs to have that all round package…

  50. Bey Bey on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 1:46 pm

I guess the Destiny May sales will be down… what were they thinking??

  51. eish on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 1:49 pm

What all of you are not even taking into consideration is that most of those mags that you seem to like dont even feature YOU! so you’re not at All upset that bo Marie Claire, Elle, Cosmopolitan, Women’s Health etc NEVA feature YOU – and dont even really care about putting YOU on the cover? And you’re majority in this country. Nxa. South Africans, nxa. wake up and smell the black coffee. Go Anele, show dem! At least she is YOU! Thanks Ms Dhlomo.

  52. eish on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 2:04 pm

and ANOTHER thing – doesnt the Marie C cover look like a 3-headed alien with 4 ears? I mean each face looks just like the one next to it. unity in diversity!! that’s my rant for the day – enjoy

  53. bonangmubishame on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 2:08 pm

Okay. What is up with the YOU? Can’t you just say BLACK??? We all know that high-end glossies hardly have black girls on tehir cover’s, but that’s about sales and what designers want. Anele is on a BUSINESS magazine. It’s NOT a high-end glossy, plus she’s ALWAYS tweeting Destiny Connect on Twitter that I feel that she was campaigning for a cover…

  54. eish on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 2:27 pm

What’s up is that PEOPLE are trying to DRUM new ideas into your heads but BONA y’all cant understand that the more you support magazines or businesses that dont have your best interests at heart, your DESTINY is not that FAIR, LADY. But I see you’re ok with that so I’ma just keep quiet. and I did say BLACK, looks like you didnt get it. more black coffee for me today, slurp. and Bonang, really? it’s about sales and what designers want? not what YOU want? so you’re ok with that. I see that our PSYCHOLOGIES dont mesh. je voudrais etre dans une autre monde, mais ELLE n’est pas arrivant.

  55. eish on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 2:34 pm

i guess i take such issues too seriously and this is not the platform! enjoy your day guys, and keep on ragging on someone who’s not here to defend herself. very useful exercise, especially considering that most magazines worldwide, and degfinitely the SA glossies, think of BLACK women as a no go zone, and here you are ragging on a cover that’s representative of most of us. and you think that’s OK. you’ll spend the money on those mags, yet they cant be bothered with you. think about it. spread love, it may just come back to you.

  56. poshspice on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 2:42 pm

@ eish it means magazines have to do their research again on their target audiences, clearly people that you believe should be the target audience for True Love, Drum, Bona are not interested in the content covered by these mags, this is not about race but what appeals to the reader..

  57. siyamthandaskota on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 3:01 pm

can people stop commenting about Anele and her gap please?lol… i love that woman and her passion…she’s very funny

  58. Majobe on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 3:04 pm

  61. Zizi on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 3:29 pm

Nthoentle thats a hard one , just keep quiet . On second thought tell ur frnd .

  62. Mntungwa on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 3:35 pm

    lol. Nothing Nthoentle, nothing.

  63. Iconic on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 3:42 pm

    @Nthoentle gal,I don’t envy that position you’re in.

  64. Mntungwa on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 3:46 pm

I think ratehr tell that gal that told you that her man is cheating on her, otswe daar.

  65. Segs on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 3:58 pm

    @Nthoente – buy a R1.99 sim – sms them both this sms “I know BOY is sleeping with GIRL1 & GIRL2. I sent this sms to BOY, GIRL1, GIRL2. Anon ”

    lol!

  66. Cinnabon on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 3:58 pm

@ Nthoentle…tell the gal who told you, that she is seeing your friends man…and observe her response…coz maybe she doesn’t know that he is cheating.

  67. Cinnabon on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 4:04 pm

…then, you must tell your friend.

  68. poshspice on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 4:33 pm

Tjo!! nthoentle it’s hard one…I would tell the brother that I’ve just discovered that he is cheating on my friend..ask him to deal with it cause I can’t keep this a secret from my friend for long.
The thing is sometimes our friends don’t like us to tell them these things.
I would consider telling the other girl too, let them fight, the guy’s concience eat him up and protect your friend’s feelings..

  69. Cnglema on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 4:43 pm

Why bedlala ngoAnele kanjena (clotheswise) kulamzimba wakhe? eish mara!

  70. Nthoentle on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 4:48 pm

Its a tough one guys! She is soo happy. Hai BS I’m sorry to high-jack your platform! Hope u still love me!

  71. poshspice on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 5:14 pm

another option is to keep quiet, no woman wants to know her boyfriend is cheating…if he is, let her find out on her own.. but if I was too close to them, I will tell the boyfriend I know, just to make him uncomfortable and suffer

  72. Nogs on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 5:16 pm

It was this site that made Anele popular…some of us who don’t listen to 5fm didn’t know who she was. I don’t think the gal is that bad..she was just defending herself from bad publicity. I will buy Destiny….since I have always being loyal to the mag plus i like the editor’s comments and I cannot afford to miss my favourite column the notebook…. At least they are not recycling faces like True-Love.

  73. Nthoentle on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 5:34 pm

@Poshspice ya ill just shut it cos next thing they’ll say I wanna be the only one married. Ill zip it!

  74. bigmama on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 6:06 pm

I like the cover of may/june Destiny mag. Damn Danny looks yummy, nka mo dira. Magazines are a waste of money I rather google stuff.

  75. Mands on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 7:30 pm

The last tym I checked, Destiny was 4 inspirational women like Gerry Elsdon, Basetsana, Khanyi Dhlomo, etc. How is Anele inspirational? What has she done besides hosting SCD& bng a radio DJ (with a co-host). It’s not even her own show, it’s Grant& Anele

  76. nan on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 7:44 pm

I think i will stick with my destiny’s at least they don’t recycle hogwash other than that Internet all the way baby.

Heat is the same as drum, just one has more useless pages that others …

When i am really bored then i will resort to heat

  77. Brown Shuga on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 8:44 pm

@eish, you make interesting observations… I only realised after I read your reply that these covers (except Destiny) had white folk. Guess I’m colour blind.

Regarding the debate over why Anele is on the cover:

I don’t know the first thing about running a magazine but here is what I think:

Magazines should not only put over achievers on their covers, I think they should also give space to emerging young stars (which I think is what they did with Anele). Yes, not everybody knows her but Destiny is well established now and are at a point where they can afford to test the waters and gamble with their cover stars.
Loyal & true Destiny readers buy the mag for the valuable content the magazine offers, not just the cover story.
I also think that they by putting her on the cover, they are trying to reach out to the younger market.. phela 25 year olds have money these days…

I also think that Khanyi Dhlomo is smart enough to at least have checked the ratings on “Grant & Anele” before agreeing to her being on the cover.
This cover will definitely push Anele’s profile up a notch and I’m happy for her coz being on the cover of Destiny is a huge deal! Something that I am positive Basetsana Khumalo, Winnie Mandela, Lindiwe Sisulu & other “high profile” South Africans would love to have.

  78. ShameMuhle-MygalB! on Tue, 20th Apr 2010 10:22 pm

    Wakakakakakaka @ ur name…

  80. Pjay on Wed, 21st Apr 2010 12:49 am

@eish hai,u have some serious race issues!! I cant heap praises on & buy a magazine jst coz it has a black person on da cover, and skip da 1 with content dat i want bcoz it normally has white ppl on da cover…that wud be jst silly & pretentious! I am not defined by the colour of my skin….im a PERSON,not just a BLACK PERSON!! So askies if i feel Anele doesnt represent ME!!
Moving on,i dnt buy mags as much as i used to,but hasnt Anele been in destiny b4?? Is this now ‘the upgrade’?? Hai,so much for not recycling…

  81. Lindakie on Wed, 21st Apr 2010 12:53 am

Bs u made a mistake, Behati Prinsloo is not a SA’can, shs NAMIBIAN.

  82. Luluwise on Wed, 21st Apr 2010 9:25 am

I am now only partial to True Love (brand loyalty) even if I always swear never to buy it after reading the contents and Mama’s n Pappas (for kiddie & mommy articles) and of course Destiny. I was excited about the Anele cover, I think its fresh and its keeping in line with Khanyi’s vision for the Mag. People always complain about recycled faces but can’t decide who they want to see on the covers. Its a giant leap for mags to put someone like Anele on their covers for a variety of reasons and I say YAY!

  83. Mands on Wed, 21st Apr 2010 10:04 am

@ BS,I’m not sayin mags shud only have achievers on their covers but Destiny has always had big achievers, not up& coming achievers like Anele. I know the Dec issue had archievers (abo Connie) &models (abo Lerato). That’s ok cos it didnt just hav a model kuphela.

I don’t have a problem with Anele but I just dont think she qualifies 2 b on Destiny cover. She can b on Move, Pace, Bona& others cos those mags cater 4 all celebs even the fallen ones.

  84. Nonny on Wed, 21st Apr 2010 4:08 pm

Nonny, I like you… are you by any chance from newcastle???>>> LOl thanks no sisi, Im not from Newcastle, but I am a Durban.

  86. Zimbini on Wed, 21st Apr 2010 4:28 pm

Anele was on Destiny not so long ago.they have just moved her to covergirl. Not a huge fan of Anele,I think she shud be on Bona & Drum but not Destiny.Anyway zonke ezimagazine recycle ppl,you know what is inside even before you read it.NXA!

it’s good to debate and discuss these issues. if Destiny editors looked at this page they’d find it amusing and interesting, but fact remains Anele is on the cover so get over it. She deserves to be on it like it or not.

@Pjay – I agree with you about not defining yourself by the colour of your skin – and I think most people would agree with you. Certainly as black women we want not just to be defined by our skin colour, and given props in some aspects just by dint of being a woman. We are people, full stop. But that is not what the world tells us every time we walk out the door. And for you to say that I have some serious race issues – as a black woman I think you should re-address that. Especially if you’re from South Africa. Is it really me having the race issue, or the society that surrounds me? Is it me having the race issue, or the magazine that asks the question “Do Black Covers Sell?” and if you didnt know Elle asked that question. In a country full of big sales of black covers!!!!

I think that they think readers are stupid, and intellectually that pisses me off. I like to think I’m a smart reader and consumer – so it disheartens me when young people (I assume you’re very young) just dont get it! It means our educational system is failing somewhat. It’s not just a magazine – it’s a product and reflective of the society that produces it. As someone posted, research goes into it, but I beg to differ that enough research is going into current magazine products. Young black women also have money to burn these days in certain instances, yet a company that doesnt seem to want to cater to them still uses them as consumers. You’re being used if you’re not on the cover (ever) but they place their product in your neighbourhood.

The end result is that I feel insulted – represent me and cater to me, then you will see me spending my hard-earned cash on your product. I guess I’m more selective, and others just arent. I agree – online is where it’s at!

I dont understand why all these women are hating on Anele. Maybe it is because they are jealous because they will never make it on the cover of Destiny or any other magazine for that matter! They have no shame ……..nxa

@lindakie Behati is in fact born in South Africa and was discovered in Cape Town but did live in Namibia with her parents – her father is a priest and moved there. @eish You make me laugh with the three headed observations – they do look remarkably alike – perhaps that tells us something about what the international modeling industry considers the marketable standard. Nevertheless these girls have made it in New York and that is something to celebrate.
I also take your point about what we editors put on our covers and then presume to sell in South Africa. Nevertheless your observations about how much black covers sell are not entirely accurate as they do not sell as much as A list celebrity covers or at least they have not in the past. It is crucial that we break that cycle I totally agree so I would really like to know who you would like to see on the Marie Claire cover? I take it Anele is too controversial given the discussion here.
