The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

April 21, 2010 by

Howdy Sportsfans,

We’re getting closer to the month of May and we all know what that means – the European Football Leagues are blowing up more than the Eyjafjallajökull volcano. The race is on – Schalke 04 looking to edge Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga, Real Madrid breathing down Barcelona’s neck in the Spanish La Liga – with Inter Milan trying to catch up with Roma in the Italian Serie A.  Bayern, Barca and Inter are all still chasing Champions League glory – it will be very interesting to see how they’ll keep up with juggling two heavy trophies at the same time.

EPL

Today we point The SportLite towards the English Premiership – where we were treated to a remake of a Clint Eastwood classic this past weekend. For those who are either too young – or not interested in Western movies – I’m talking about The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

The Good:

How many times have we seen it? Manchester United in trouble – time slipping away like sands through an hourglass – and then from nowhere GOAL! Well, it happened again on Saturday in the Manchester Derby – after a rather dull 92 minutes and a bit with no goals – veteran Paul Scholes netted one of the most important goals of his long career. Full time: Man City 0 – Man United 1. Relief for Fergie and the other red-faced Mancunians on the stands. Chelsea’s lead reduced to one point.

The Bad:

Man United’s dramatic win shouldn’t have unsettled Chelsea – a win over Spurs and their lead would’ve been restored to four points. It shouldn’t have – but it did.  The Blues didn’t bring their swagger to this London derby -and their neighbours took full advantage of that. The penalty decision leading to Spurs’ first goal (hammered in by Defoe) was a bit dodgy – but there was nothing but skill involved in Bale’s second goal. Lampard managed to pull one back but it was a bit too late. Full time: Chelsea 1 – Spurs 2. Well, as if losing three points was not bad enough – Terry also managed to get himself red-carded. A little birdy told me it was all part of John’s plan to leave early in order to avoid the traffic and congestion – that way he wouldn’t drive over any stewards on his way out. That rumour is unconfirmed.

Wigan

The Ugly:

U-G-L-Y: that’s one word for describing what went down at The DW Stadium when Wigan hosted Arsenal on Sunday. I’m not even going to bore you with a lot of words – but I’ll give you the timeline of the important events – see if you can come up with a better description.

-        41th min: GOAL! Walcott – once he cuts in ahead of the defender you’re toast [Wigan 0 – Arsenal 1]

-        48th min: GOAL!  Silvestre from a corner – free header. [Wigan 0 – Arsenal 2]

-        80th min: GOAL! Ben Watson – good movement by Wigan. [Wigan 1 – Arsenal 2]

-        89th min: GOAL! Why did Fabianski slam-dunk the ball on Bramble’s head? [Wigan 2 – Arsenal 2]

-        91st min: GOAL! Great goal by N’zogbia – created from nothing. [Wigan 3 – Arsenal 2]

-      THE END

I’m not a person who enjoys dwelling in the past – so let’s move right along and see how those results affected the log positions – but most importantly – let’s have at look at what lies ahead for these three giants.

Current log standings

  1. Chelsea – 77pts
  2. Man Utd – 76pts
  3. Arsenal – 71pts

Remaining fixtures

Man Utd vs Spurs (24th April)

Arsenal vs Man City (24th April)

Chelsea vs Stoke (25 April)

Liverpool vs Chelsea (02 May) ? The day all Man Utd fans will turn to Liverpool fans

Sunderland vs Man Utd (02 May)

Blackburn vs Arsenal (03 May) ? The Gunners may be out of the race at this stage – we’ll see.

Chelsea vs Wigan (09 May)

Man Utd vs Stoke (09 May)FOOTBALL_CHELSEA

Arsenal vs Fulham (09 May)

Verdict:

The SportLite sees both Chelsea and Man United collecting 7 points each from their remaining matches – leading to Chelsea being crowned the English Premiership Champions 2009/2010.

What are YOUR thoughts? Will Spurs complete their destruction of the Top 3 by defeating the Red Devils? Will United capitalise on another Chelsea stumble and defend their trophy? Talk to us…

A few weeks ago I thought The Gunners had a chance- but it looks like its back to the drawing board for Mr Wenger. Another season – same excuses…youth development…blah blah blah…

Perhaps they should consider changing the name from
ARSENAL Football Club to Arsenal School of Excellence.

Things are getting tougher for Chelsea with the Drogba “groin” problem. They should definitely rest him this weekend – maybe bring him back for the Liverpool game.

It’s going to be a difficult game for Man United Spurs are playing very well lately and are 1 step in campaigning in Champions League next season,i predict a draw in that match and Chelsea lifting the trophy

As for the Gunners Mr Wenger must come with another excuse we tied of youth development that doesn’t bring any glory to the Gunners fans

Even a kid can tell you how this will end but I can help you and break it down.

The REd Devils will win all of their games and get 9 points + 76 = 85 points

Chelsea buns will win one game and draw 2 and get 5 points + 77 = 82 points.

    Glory Glory Man United!!!!!!!

The Gooners must just donate their Champions League spot to Liverpool shame and relocate to China where they can start a Player Making factory.

If we lose the league I’ll use a Drogba (puke) avatar until next season.

  10. The Sportlite on Thu, 22nd Apr 2010 11:18 am

    Ok…top stuff…dig the confidence/arrogance (there’s a thin line they say)…

Now we need someone to take you up on the avatar bet – as long as they don’t use that hideous avatar.

Drogba in a CHELSEA top or Rooney in MAN UTD top.

Let’s see if there’s a brave Chelsea fan out there…or even Arsenal…let’s not forget they are still in the race (hahaha) :-)

As a tru Chelsea supporter i can only say this. Spurs did not beat us, we beat us! in my mind this weekend is ellimentary in the title race. cast your minds further and take a look at the Chelsea V.S torres and gerrard game. thats the key fixture in the title race. Fergie has once agian proven that he is one of the best two managers in the world.

  15. ExGeeSwag on Thu, 22nd Apr 2010 1:38 pm

Still no challenger? Even the Chelsea buns lovers can see where this cup is going. I rest my case.

  16. Kurupt on Thu, 22nd Apr 2010 3:20 pm

As much as I love the red devils it seems the silverware is heading to stamford bridge. If chelsea happens to slip along the road,we are going to make up for uefa.
    The gunners,well that’s something else.

  17. The Sportlite on Fri, 23rd Apr 2010 11:41 am

    @ExGeeSwag

Since no Chelsea fan was brave enough to take you up on the challenge – I guess I have to do it. Rooney avatar for a WEEK if Man United takes it. Malouda avatar for you if Chelsea takes it (forget Drogba) – deal also includes 6 beers now. :-) *signs deal*

Im a gunner but since they’re out of the running… Il be cheering for the Blues.
P.S: I think Wenger needs to retire now, season after season we have the same disappointed speech to give. We start off good and then momentum is lost. Haai, Fergie must take Wenger to the retirement home he is going to. Enough is enough. Next better chicken
