Presenters Merry Go Round Harms SAFM

May 18, 2010 by Authentic Views

When Romeo Kumalo became General Manager of SABC 1 in 2001, one of the things he made clear was that he’ll make the channel young and vibrant by replacing old crocks with young blood. Many of those who were uncertain and thought they were in the chopping block, left immediately to avoid the embarrassment of being shown the door. But after his departure in 2004 some made a comeback.

The comeback trend at SABC continues year after year in all mediums. It has been a dominant factor particularly in SABC owned radio stations.

CM

Among notables is the return of Caesar Molebatsi to anchor AM Live after years of absence from broadcast. He has been joined in his new role by Florence Letoaba as co-host. The two are replacing Tim Modise who has left the station and Tshepiso Makwetla who has since been moved to PM Live where she co-hosts with Xolani Gwala. This appears to be ill-advised change as it draws more complaints and criticisms from the listeners. Many of them are saying the show has fallen flat like an old beer. The new team of anchors lacks the professionalism of their predecessors and are not in sync with listener’s expectations. AM Live is the current affairs show and there’s no substitute or music to compensate any kind of poor presentation. Listeners don’t just want to know what is happening as is the cases with workers’ strikes, we already know its happening but listeners want to know why it is happening, what is at stake and who should be hold accountable. Presenters are expected to get into the bottom of these questions and bring parties involved on air, interrogate their roles and grill them for their actions and highlight to them the consequences and seek the way forward. They represent us the listeners, since we don’t have access to everybody though we want to see issues resolved and those responsible being held accountable.

Interrogation is the skill the new broom seem to lack. They only present scripted information like news readers.

SAFM’s main rival is Talk Radio 702. Both stations review news events which took place the previous day or overnight and they also get reactions to what dominates the morning papers. In the morning I used to switch between the two stations.

Though I love listening to 702, it tends to focus more on one issue. For example if the police coincidentally shoot someone, that will be interpreted as the results of ‘shoot to kill’ and for the whole morning John Robbie will be taking agreeing calls, reading angry SMSes and being critical of what he perceives as the problem.

His scope is usually limited to around 3 main interviews, one around 7:20, then a sport interview around 8:10 and daily features like US report, UK report & Africa report. Sometimes you get a filler interview somewhere in-between. Listeners drive the show as they call to participate on morning agenda which John Robbie sets up or they set up their own agenda by raising up issues and others responding likewise.

702logo88

People affected by what makes the news use the platform to air their side of story but sometimes I find it difficult to bear with John Robbie. I like the man but like many white liberals he tends to regard his views to always be correct, enforces them to the listeners and does not accommodate question or disagreements. He can spend lots of time trying to justifying what he said and why he said it.

To the advantage of many 702 listeners, the station provides Podcasts for most of its daily highlights, which means you can always catch up with what you missed on air.

SAFM however is still lagging behind in Podcast technology but the station tries to cover as many issues as possible. They’ll follow up and get a number of responses from as many parties involved as they can and each morning the show is sealed with the After 8 debate.

That’s another area where Caesar became more irritating because he interrupts his show guests and callers and keeps excusing his amateurish actions by saying he is still new. Judging by the clean sweep at the inauguration of MTN Radio Awards, SAFM is no match to 702.

Umhlobo Wenene FM listeners are going through the same dismay after the station chopped their favourite Slyzo and his co-host Smonz. They had to make way for the return of Putco Mafani who recently fell out of favor with theWorld Cup Local Organising Committe as Events Manager for the
Nelson Mandela Bay. He was once a darling of Amakhosi fans as the PRO of Kaizer Chiefs which is SA’s glamorous football team and later joined the less glamorous Platinum Stars which he also left. But unlike SAFM, Umhlobo Wenene may survive the wrath of listenership shrinkage due to not a lack of competition or a threat but they will still lose listeners in urban areas.

SA FM’s AM Live has definitely taken a knock with these changes. We cannot blame the show anchors because this is who they are; the blame goes to the authority who appointed them.

It is not too late for the station to rectify its error by replacing AM Live anchors with the PM Live ones but it’s not gonna happen. SABCis a public broadcaster who gets funded from our taxes and they know that as South Africans we are not demanding quality service for our money. That is why we have incompetent government departments, which are a trap for those who don’t share competition with the private sector.

With radio we can always switch around but those current affairs fanatics who can not access SAFM competitors are forced to cope with what they’ve been given or switch to other stations.

I’m not a fan of any of the above mentioned radio stations but hey people are free to change the dial whenever they feel like. Florence used to be a great newsreader on Metrofm but she used to be too serious for my liking. However people should just learn to live with change or move on.

  6. Lehakoe on Wed, 19th May 2010 1:59 am

hawu! Kanti Putco really did go back to radio? I thought it was an April Fools joke.

I dnt knw who does the SAfm slot at around 8pm. Was forced to listen to her once and she irritated the crap out of me. She had to add ‘uhm’ after every second word. “uhm, do you think, uhm, that, uhm, so and so is, uhm, going to do, uhm…..Made me wanna scream!

  7. siyamthandaskota on Wed, 19th May 2010 2:22 am

I knw slyso is on algoafm now. He was a great presenter. I dont know why putco is making noise on radio, in the mornings nogal. I only listen to xolani wen it cums to safm.john robie is cheeky heheh. Why when these changes takes place young talent is never considered? Sumwher out ther therz a young person who can do better than john robbie but is not considered because they are not well known

  9. Madala on Wed, 19th May 2010 3:42 am

4 the 1st time when I go 2 work in the mornings I now play my tapes/ cassetes (Mahlathini & Mahotela Queens) coz ther z nuthin 2 listen 2 on radio.
I am sure Ceaser must hav bn gud during his time, but this is ain’t his time anymore…! I’m stil not convinced that his voice is gr8 4 radio (tv may b when u can c him) but definately not radio, let alone a morning radio show where every1 should b fresh, up & vibing…..

  10. Madala on Wed, 19th May 2010 3:44 am

Ceaser yena shame, he just soundz like menopaused woman who has just bn woken-up by a very bad-bad dream…….
Not only does Caesar presents scripted information, but he sleeps while reading it… really now, he runs flat, out of breath, & fail 2 complete sentences…. Its like he has dosed off himself due 2 boredom..!

  11. Madala on Wed, 19th May 2010 3:46 am

That Babam’khulu Ceaser needs Omega 3 tablets & viagra… and must return 2 retirement village where he can wake up 2 “ukuchatha”& “ukuphalaza” house chores, and perhaps bore the eladery villagers 2 death [and save us social grants money] with early scripture reading & flat preaching…

  12. Madala on Wed, 19th May 2010 3:47 am

As for Florance Letoaba… I think “ukutwsinelwa” nguye on Week-end Live was more than enough torture 2 South Africans… but then, every1 has a hang-over 4rm Frid & Sat parties, so we did not mind the ‘twina-twsina’ Weekend Live… AM live is a definately no no 4 her..!

In fact, the only days I went early 2 work were when Letoaba & the other creature r standing-inn 4 Vuyo & Leahan on Morning Live.

  13. Madala on Wed, 19th May 2010 3:50 am

I agree 100%, at this stage the PM Live team must move to early morning, we need Xolani 4 mng 2 set the day’s agenda….! I no longer hav inspiring thems 2 discuss in the corridors when I arrive @ the office coz Ceaser & the girl hav killed the day even b4 it starts… nxaaaa

  14. Madala on Wed, 19th May 2010 3:50 am

I don’t know much bout Mhlobo Wenene (I only listen on Thursdays 9-12 for “LelikaYehova iHlabathi…and some lengthy sentence…) but I am confident that ppl will turn 2 communty radio stations if they r bore by Tat’uPutco… did he realy return 2 radio????
Ther r many radio staions that hav mushroomed 4rm UCR (Mthatha) 2 some Zibonele (Khayelitsha) that continued 2 b gud 4rm tym-2-tym, depending on which presenter is trying 2 ‘launch’ his/ her career….

  15. soul sista on Wed, 19th May 2010 4:00 am

Kwaaaaaaaa Madala, you just dont like them shame…

  16. Kiki on Wed, 19th May 2010 5:10 am

Who are all these people? I don’t know them, the only name that has a face to it Romeo Khumalo, the rest I am BLANK.

  17. Madala on Wed, 19th May 2010 5:12 am

Eish, soul sista, the thing is, a morning show is a trend-setter 4 the day… and when a bad-trend has bn set, the entire day z ruined… mfncm….
Where did these older ppl re-surfaced 4rm… its almost like President JZ’s team where even sun-dried ppl like Vusi Mona’s hav re-surfaced back 2 lime-lite…ish

  18. Madala on Wed, 19th May 2010 5:15 am

LOL @ Kiki…. kanti what age generation were u raised in…. these ppl r supposed 2 b our raidio heros & gurus..

  23. sponono on Wed, 19th May 2010 8:27 am

Caeser used to be good on that Talk Show during Felieca’s time on TV, but he did have the tendency of interrupting speakers so that hasnt changed, but he’s grown too old I guess..

  24. Matric on Wed, 19th May 2010 8:36 am

Lol Soul Sister i still havent read the article,am still waiting for Twinkyyy/any volunteer to summarize it for me. :-)

  25. soul sista on Wed, 19th May 2010 8:55 am

Lol @Matric how I wish Twinkyyy will never say word. Every man for himself..

Thanx @sponono now I remember who Ceasar Molebatsi is. He was already old looooooooong time ago, bathong.

At least unlike @Kiki & Lela I know about 4 of those people… *hides*

  26. Luja on Wed, 19th May 2010 9:03 am

Oh I wondered y the SAFM morning show is always super boring. Who is this Ceasar Molebatsi character? I never really felt Tshepiso in the morning I still dont feel her but Xolani is great. I agree with u there on John Robbie.
In between I listen to Putco, Gareth (who is absolutely great!), and Mo Flava who is seriously growing on me by the day.

Lol@Twinkyyy here is my comment “hahahahahahahahahaha” :-0

  39. Mochaki on Wed, 19th May 2010 12:35 pm

I enjoy Ceaser’s debate slot. I think he handles it well, despite his juvenile tendencies when interrupting guests. I agree 100% that Tshepiso and Xolani do a good job, perhaps split them to balance the AM and PM show. As for John Robbie and his white tendecies, don’t get me started.

  40. Xolani on Wed, 19th May 2010 1:25 pm

Xolani Gwala is also guilty of interrupting guests and forcing his views down their throats , 702 is like eTV and NEWS24 (anti ANC and pro-whingeing)

I now listen to iGagasi FM’s Viewpoint (at least there when I call in – I usually know more on the subject then the hosts and I always feel like a hero after the guests agree with me) -

The producer lets me jump the call queue – apparently I’m very knowledgeable – LOL if only they knew …

  41. Lehakoe on Wed, 19th May 2010 1:33 pm

  60. Sipho Dhlamini on Wed, 19th May 2010 3:31 pm

Generally in S.A. there is a shortage of young n talented talk show hosts, this explains why Bra Tim kept on postponing his retirement from brodacasting n it also explains why it didnt take him long to return to SA fm from LOC.Florence n Tshepiso are all da same, especially Tshepiso with her irritating accent. It also explains why Metro took so long to replace Given Mkhari (My all time favourite talk show host). The less said about Ntate Molebatsi the better, the time he gets used to everything he will be 100yrs old.I must say when looking at this whole issue, women are not doing bad @ all,e.g. Siki,Sakina le Redi. But this thing of RECYCLING the presenters should stop, but then again when n if it stops,I`m afraid we are going to be tortured by some people who lack substance n think by virtue of them twanging when speaking English, they are thee talk show hosts.

  61. ntshepeng on Wed, 19th May 2010 3:37 pm

  93. Brown Shuga on Wed, 19th May 2010 7:56 pm

Not the ‘diversion’ that I mind but I have a serious problem who comment on here about how boring the article is. AV worked his ass off writing it and just coz it’s boring to u does not mean it’s boring to the next guy. Why do u waste ur energy commenting about how boring it is? Why don’t u ignore it? Or find something ‘interesting’ to comment on? Either here or anywhere else.

JC is for different kinds of people with different kinds of tastes and preferences and u can yawn till u doze off on my articles but I’m sorry, I will not allow it on our Contributors’ articles coz these are the people who tirelessly work hard to help me make the site what it is.

Fok as in fok the situation, not fok @ an individual/s.

  94. Lela on Wed, 19th May 2010 7:57 pm

Lol @Ntsepeng n Nonkawu disrespectin n bein fokd n still not swabing.

  95. Amstar on Wed, 19th May 2010 8:24 pm

@Nonkawu, “i am silent blogging on this one shem…ngiyabonga mina..lol”.
U said u dont like it when people do that kwi blog but u r doin it.U even said that’s why u dont read soccer & politics blogs.U must practice what u preach, *in Barry White’s voice*

  96. Twinkyyy on Wed, 19th May 2010 8:31 pm

*clears throat* *swallows her pride* AV sowi for “disrespecting” ya. askies nakuwe Brown Shuga vha.now calm down!!!

  97. soul sista on Wed, 19th May 2010 8:37 pm

Like a lady I’ll square my shoulders and say that I’m wrong. BS I’m sure I’m one of the people who used the word “boring” in one of my comments and the word was predeceded by “li’l as in little” either way it does not clear the fact that I used the word. I’m sorry, my intention was not to undermine/disrespect/not appreciate AV’s work. I do appreciate what you and your contributors are doing because I learn, get entertained & informed here everyday.
I’m one of those people who never comment in articles that I dont find interesting because I dont want to end up writing comments like *yawn* but today I’m on the wrong side.
I think thats all I can say for myself. *swabing all the way* :-(

  98. Brown Shuga on Wed, 19th May 2010 8:46 pm

It’s okay ladies, sorry for the tantrum.

    Sorry AV.

  99. soul sista on Wed, 19th May 2010 8:47 pm

  100. Jellytot on Wed, 19th May 2010 9:11 pm

Just-ice on radio 2000 in the morning is not bad, some serious talk, he is helluva funny tho! And i like the songs he plays, eases you into the day.

  101. Nonkawu on Wed, 19th May 2010 9:38 pm

Amstar u must get ur facts together before u comment,if u check when I said that twas when someone was critisizing n disrespectin the PEOPLE who were commenting on the article. I did not diss anyone,I only got into the groove when the topic diverted coz I fitted in the diverted convo. By me saying I will silent blog on this one,who gets affected by that?

I personally apologized to BS n AV for taking part in a diverted convo. We did not insult anyone or attack the Madalas who were enjoying the article. We just carried on with our thing, likuphi iphutha lapho? And naye uBS says she has no problem with the divertion but with those who said the article is boring? If u read my comments there is no part where I used the word BORING!

  102. soul sista on Wed, 19th May 2010 9:52 pm

Can you please leave us Madalas out of this please… lol

  103. Nonkawu on Wed, 19th May 2010 9:57 pm

Come to think of it, when and on which article did I say I don’t read soccer n politics blogs?

The only time I mentioned how I felt about soccer it was on Dj Sbu article and I don’t remember saying I DON’T read the blogs. I quote ” I don’t like soccer or politics, I HARDLY read the articles but I can never comment on there DISSING those who enjoy the articles. Its wrong”. (Well this is wat I remember writing)

  104. Nonkawu on Wed, 19th May 2010 10:02 pm

Hayi wena Soul Sista u will get me into trouble. By Madalas I didn’t mean OLD people I meant Madala as in one of the bloggers uMadala.

  105. soul sista on Wed, 19th May 2010 10:19 pm

ok, I thought you meant us old people. I still have to negotiate with BS to increase the age of the targeted readers.

  106. Authentic views on Wed, 19th May 2010 10:26 pm

Thanks to all my critics. The reason I write is for your feedback, so I’ll take it, the good, the bad and the ugly. I appreciate those who share my views or made constructive comments,
@ Madala, you scripted all humour which I avoided to put, didn’t want to sound more personal. Same like you I no longer have something to listen to @ the radio in the mornings, instead after a bit of TV my next stop is newspaper or internet. But for those who felt left out, I’ll do better next time to bring as many of you in the topic even if its an unfamiliar subject for many. Please learn to make more constructive feedback or criticism, read out the piece and talk about what you find lacking in it. Radio industry is big and not only about current affairs which is my interest even though I’m familiar with what other stations are all about. Comments about changes in other station’s line-up and how it affects one as a listener, poor quality SABC offers at the expense of our taxes and TV licences, recycling of presenters as one of the bloggers mentioned etc… makes a healthy feedback.

  107. Amstar on Wed, 19th May 2010 10:27 pm

Nonkawu I knew u were gona attack me though I wasnt fighing with u. I dont know how 2 explain this but what u said, iyafana nomntu who comments athi “yawn/boring”. What I meant is, u didnt have 2 say u r silent blogging, which is the same as saying the blog is boring, just like u dont comment on politics since ungafuni ukubhoxa those who enjoy the blog. Hope I’m makin sense.
My bad, regarding the politics/sports, I meant 2 say comment not read

  108. Twinkyyy on Wed, 19th May 2010 10:33 pm

    Im silent blogging now!!!

  109. soul sista on Wed, 19th May 2010 10:51 pm

What’s the meaning of silent blogging twinkyyy

  110. Nonkawu on Wed, 19th May 2010 10:54 pm

Well Amstar the problem here is u are assuming. By my silent blogging I meant I did not knw wat to say coz the people mentioned on this article andibazi. So I silent blogged until someone spoke about somethin I could comment on.
How many times have I said I will reserve my comment on an article but then I still come back and comment on that very same article?
I did not attack u I merely stated my side of the story after u specifically told me TO PRACTISE WAT I PREACH *in whoever’s voice*lol and this was after I had APOLOGISED to BS n AV.

Heheh wena Twinkyyy are we boring you that’s why u gonna silent blog?

  111. Nonkawu on Wed, 19th May 2010 11:02 pm

Soul Sista rather ask Amstar he/she knows wat silent blogging means better than me or Twinkyy..lol

  114. GA on Wed, 19th May 2010 11:32 pm

I have never been into SA fm so i dont know whats up with the oldies but i can imagine how monotonous it must even sound.
I totally agree with you regarding John Robie….when i get tired of him i switch to khaya fm..aaand i come back at 10am for my girl crush Redi :-)

@Lehakoe..the person on SAfm with the thousand uhms must be Tshepiso…i cannot stand them either, thats ONE reason why i cant ever sit through that sabc3 show that she hosts(forgot what its called)..is it interface?…
And i dont know anymore whyy i dont like Xolani hle bathong…mara a ke mo rateshishe man?

Why did Tim Modise leave safm?
I really loved how things used to be on 702 when he had the 10am and Redi had the 9pm. It was a perfect radio day for me. But im used to Redi were she is now.

  115. Q-tee on Wed, 19th May 2010 11:39 pm

  118. boitha on Thu, 20th May 2010 12:45 pm

Well I listen to 702 bt 1 thing that always irritates me with the station is the backward mentality of most of the white ppl who listen to the station, they have racist tendencies and its irritating! I have to agree fully with GA,Redi’s show is totally great and addictive,My friends think im Cooko cos i love the station.Phela 20 year olds are deep into Yfm.lol
