Riots Disrupt Cope Vigil

May 30, 2010 by

Disagreements about funeral procedures resulted to eruption of riots at the burial site of COPE which was held at St Georges Hotel in Irene, outside Pretoria. Riot police force had to be called to the scene as the two family factions were destroying the venue property, using every removable object and throwing them at one another. The 18 month old toddler COPE was meant to be laid to rest after a long suffering from suffocation caused by poor handling by the family members.

When Terror Lekota served divorce papers to his ANC parents it became an obvious factor that his intention was to adopt his own political baby. Mbazima Shilowa joined the adoption process and the same-sex political union emerged with unofficial joint custody. But Mbazima’s sights were set in gaining full custody of the baby. COPE family grew rapidly drawing numbers from diverse groups in the country, who saw it as a potential to fill the political vacuum, causing nightmares to the ANC. When the adoption finally came to be, the family decided that Terror must remain the head, Mbazima was made his deputy and a blonde mom, Lynda Oodendal, unknown in political circles emerged as the 2nd deputy.

Crisis striked on the way to election when Terror was backstabed and the party went out of the political arena to rope in the priest, Rev Mvume Dandala as their presidential candidate who would shame Zuma’s moral bankruptcy. Terror swallowed the bitter pill, showed a sheepish smile & rallied behind the politically ordained clergy. A political vacuum and a South African electorate which yearned for a new political player put COPE in the mark with 1.3 Million votes nationally and elevated it to official opposition in 6 provinces.

But resentment towards Terror Lekota never stopped, instead it continued to grow. Others had confidence in him while others felt indebted to his bravery and they stood by him. Those who resent him were running out of patience and COPE youth felt like they can copycat their ANC grand cousins and influence the party’s leadership. They passed a motion of no confidence to the leadership, criticising party decisions, including attempts to forge an alliance with the DA. They fast forwaded party leadership elective conference and endorsed the 2nd in command. That was the beginning of the end. Tensions hiked, suffocation to the baby’s health rose, its condition deteriorated even at ICU it was not cared for, each parent with their faction were attempting to smuggle it. Symptoms were clear that the child won’t survive unless the family realise their togetherness and put thechild’s health first.

The final straw came when the last minute attempt to spare the baby’s life by dropping election, and instead focus on other issues which promote family unity. But delegates came with ANC youth league mentality which is called in Xhosa “malidilike ukuba likekele”. Even the wisdom of Solomon of cutting the child into two halves, hoping that the true parent will be compassionate and opt to spare it’s life, but there was none of it in the COPE situation. It was all or nothing for Shilowa express as they came prepared to rule in favor of Mbazima for custody. Lekota faction went after being told they’re be no election it’s just discussions for other family matters. Going against that decision was a betrayal which was vindicated by the court decision. That spelled the end of baby’s COPE’s life.

But both family factions are in denial that the child is dead. The media, which played a huge role in ushering it to life believes it’s the end. They blame the violent culture which was inherited from ANC grand parents while others see it being the casualty of personality clashes and greed which defines our political landscapes. Unfortunately since it is not yet laid to rest its ghost will continue to haunt us.

No matter what ruling the court reaches its faction will hold on to its share of copse. In closing we can say “hlala kwabafileyo COPE”.

    Wow wow wow AV!
I’m not into politics but danm I really enjoyed this piece here, the personification just made my day.

LOL I’m sure many people have now hid their COPE yellow T-shirts very far this is really embarrassing.

…and where is the bishop when all this happens? I think he should pray harder

  2. Authentic views on Sun, 30th May 2010 10:29 pm

Thank you Soul sister. You made my day too. The bishop is currently lame duck behind Shilowa faction. They brought all kinds of priests from various religions to open up the conference with prayers but their dirty scam (Shilowa faction) was already conceived and couldn’t be halted and the results are all over the media.

tjo ANC must have thrown a party cos o’ this.

  4. GA on Sun, 30th May 2010 11:16 pm

Lovely piece AV…im in stiches too..

“..and a blonde mom, Lynda Oodendal, unknown in political circles emerged as the 2nd deputy….”..lol
Yazi i remember that the way she emerged was almost similar to the way Sarah palin emerged out of nowhere as Maccain’s running mate…it was very strange.

“…the party went out of political arena to rope in the priest, Rev Mvume Dandala as their presidential candidate who will shame Zuma’s moral bankruptcy…”…tltltltltl…
Its hillarious now, but at the time even i had faith in the idea of a man of the cloth shaming Msholozi’z “moral bankrupcy”….*what a missed opporutinty*…
And ofcourse the thought of Hlomla being the president’s son one day was very appealing. We need the kind of drama in parliament that Carla Bruni brought when she hooked up with Sarkozy or when Shwarzenegger became the governer of carlifonia…
Oh well….i guess Zuma, Jules and Zapiro drama it is then…

“LOL I’m sure many people have now hid their COPE yellow T-shirts very far this is really embarrassing”…i’d hide it as well if i had one Soul sista.
Its always so “interesting” when i see on tv COPE members “going back home”. I love how they come to that anc press conference wearing a cope shirt and in the end they take it off to reveal the anc one symbolically…priceless!
I tend to ask gore where is their pride? Going back and forth btween parties like ping pong balls cant be good for their reps……but then sometimes i think maybe it was all an anc set up anyway…they were deployed to go to cope, to spy..lol..and to come back later and embarass cope and create a shadow of doubt about it to the masses. I would not put something like this past these people.

Hai ke…it was good while it lasted.

I wonder what people like Bo Andile Mazwai are thinking now because they were on the Cope bandwagon when it started?

  5. GA on Sun, 30th May 2010 11:25 pm

    And may i ask:

    1. How was lekota “backstabbed” in the early days such that rev Dandala was roped in?

    2. Nou what is the problem. I stopped following their squables and any cope news when Sarh Palin..i mean Linda left the party?

  6. FunkyFK on Sun, 30th May 2010 11:36 pm

This is hilarious – thanks AV – This baby was born premature. And I agree with you, instead of nursing, nurturing this child, they spent their time fighting who will be the Daddy. This reminds when we used to plan mantlwana and all fighting to be ntate wa lelapa.

    Good read AV

  7. Authentic views on Sun, 30th May 2010 11:45 pm

@ GA, Lol… High profile individuals like Thami Mazwai are all covering their shame and have distanced themselves as far as possible from COPE. Terror Lekota was backstabed @ the fact that Reverend was roped in without his consent. Lynda Palin Oodendal went to parliament & find the go thougher, resigned and joined ANC.

  8. soul sista on Mon, 31st May 2010 12:18 am

Bathong COPE is so not coping its not even funny anymore. Wish the 2 parents had consulted with the gynecologist Thabo Mbeki before they conceived this baby.

  10. Onna on Mon, 31st May 2010 2:01 am

I am in tears…..n rolling on the floor kwakwarising. Anybody who knows how politics work would have seen the “Baby” was born blue in the face and it was struggling to breathe which is why they roped in Rev Dandala to give cpr, alas it was all in vain. Sithi dudu kubo bonke who braved the cold, the rain, the sweltering heat standing on lines to go waite their votes. Touching eulogy AV.

  11. ugogal on Mon, 31st May 2010 2:46 am

Great piece AV. I enjoy reading ur articles! U make boring politics sound interesting – pls write a novel :)

  12. Groupie on Mon, 31st May 2010 2:53 am

wow AV, am not into politics but ur pc is so lovely! Wagagagaga Soul Sista uthi yi Gyn u Mbeki? *dead* This baby has been in ICU for far too long now, hope their medical aid dsnt get exhasted!

  13. Madala on Mon, 31st May 2010 3:22 am

But delegates came with ANC youth league mentality which is called in Xhosa “malidilike ukuba likekele”>>>>> So true, it is these ANC genetic background of arrogance & hooligan “ndlavini-like” behavoir that will continue to haunt the Congress of the Hopeless!

  14. Madala on Mon, 31st May 2010 3:24 am

I believe strongly that the timing for COPE was perfect… but one must throw bigs-up to ANC Strategists…. they sent some spies to join Cope & ridicule it 4rm within such that the backbone-less (shall we call them invetabrates?) members of Cope get confused & return to ANC…

I still do not believe that people who genuinely voted Cope for “good reasons” will vote back the ANC in its current form!
In fact, as much as Cope is in the deathrow…. the ANC is not in a better position either…. u can c that by the riots and worker toy-toy everywhere… the only difference is that ANC has endless multitude of government money in their custody… and they can buy themselves out of every sinfull situation…

  15. Madala on Mon, 31st May 2010 3:25 am

I voted Cope & I don’t regret it… I am shamefull of what they r doing with that vote, but I think I would be equaly shamefull if my vote went 2 my traditional ANC becoz of how is the ANC is currently clouning with the instution called the Republic of South Africa ….. I therefore find comford in knowing that I hav tried a new recipie… pitty it seems not working, but I am at least looking 4wd and not back 2 the same ANC in its current form…….

  16. Madala on Mon, 31st May 2010 3:31 am

Thanx AV… yo soft touch 2 world’s affairs makes them palatable 2 chew… this is hillarous despite the genuine depression….

LMAO @ Hlomla wanting 2 b the “fist Kid”…lol lol lol

Odendaal yena kazazi ii-polics… naye she will retire like Mr van Schalkwyk in a “thank you Cabinet post” 2 look after less sensitive departments like Fisheries/ Water Affairs, etc…

  17. soul sista on Mon, 31st May 2010 5:19 am

    “Congress of the Hopeless!”… LOL

Kwaaaaaaaa @madala and his depression… guess AV is such a great therapist.

  18. soul sista on Mon, 31st May 2010 8:11 am

Aw shame I’m listen to Kaya fm and they are interviewing Mr Lekota he sounds so cool or should I say down. He says “disagreements” within COPE are normal.
I dont know but his voice has that thing that makes me sympathise even empathise with him…. Ke sono shem :-(

    So September it is then…

  19. Luja on Mon, 31st May 2010 9:39 am

Iyho bathong, hay ziyakhipha kwiCope. I listened to Mbhazima last nite on Eusibias’ show on 702 and all i can say now guys is that the gloves are officially off.
I feel sorry for the people who went and joined this party coz a very close friend of mine went from a flourishing political career in the ANC to join this congress of the jokers and now he doesnt have a political home. Its really sad.
Thina we will grab the popocorn and enjoy the show, but I must say that when Lekota finnaly sees how pointless this thing is he will always have a political home in the ANC.

  20. Xolani on Mon, 31st May 2010 9:57 am

    LOL @Lee

  26. GA on Mon, 31st May 2010 2:50 pm

    Its terribly disappointing indeed Mathz

I do however think that for the purpose of preventing ANC from having the 65% majority, then their presence was worthwhile.
Ill vote for another party in 2012 (is it) just to ensure that they dont get the majority…

  27. Lee on Mon, 31st May 2010 3:08 pm

@ GA “I do however think that for the purpose of preventing ANC from having the 65%” i agree fully with u there..but cope yona aowaa hle ke monkey business…. its like a cheating man who left his wife and married another “cheating” woman… id rather open my own party.

anyway, cope memebers are like kids (dont get me started on which kind of kids) , when they dont get something then they start crying and you know that the SH*** is gonna hit the roof

u can not build a political paty on facebook.

  33. Mathaz on Tue, 1st Jun 2010 9:32 am

Yesterday e-news had Mbazima first and after an hour Terror. You could see that Terror was disappointed, hurt and angry. He kept his composure saying that he’s still the president of the party and will not vacate his office until Jeremy asked him something about Mbazima and totally lost his cool saying that how could he (mbazima) appear on national TV and say that he is now the president.

Mbazima yena was just saying that he is the Acting president and if given the chance he will take the party further. I so much admired him when he was GP’s premier but now i see a totally different person, a power monger and an opportunist.

Cope was so promising but i see it giving back ANC the 2/3 majority. I am sad…
