Twitter (Beef) Guide For Dummies!

I’ve received a couple of requests about assistance on “how twitter works” and even though I”m not a Twitter expert, I’ve tried putting together a few tips on how to use and read tweets, using a few tweets that were tweeted by actual people in actual conversations during the weekend.

Basics that you need to know before we start with the lesson:

  1. Tweet: A Twitter status update is called a tweet.
  2. Retweet : This means “repeating” what someone else has tweeted. When you are retweeting you can also add your comment to that original tweet or just retweet it and leave it as it is. Retweeting a “tweet” without adding a comment generally means that you agree with that original tweet or you like it.
  3. Retweeting: There are 2 accepted ways to do this and I will demonstrate below… Retweeting is useful because if you just reply to a tweet without “retweeting” the person you are “tweeting” (talking to) might get confused about what you are talking about. Especially if it’s someone who tweets a lot or is having several “tweet” conversations with a lot of people.
  4. Following and Followers: What you tweet (your updates) will only be seen by people who follow you. Unless you “tweet” a person. & the only tweets that will appear on your “timeline” (homepage) are your own tweets as well as tweets, tweeted by people you follow.
  5. Tweeting a person means that you put an “@” in front of their name. e.g. my Twitter name is MsLeloB so for me to see a message that you are sending me, you need to write it as @MsLeloB
  6. To be able to see my tweets, you need to “follow” me and to do that you need to go to my profile and click on the “follow” button you will see.
  7. You don’t have to follow me to be able to tweet me, you can just put an @ in front of my name, I will get your message and you will get my responses if I reply.
  8. DM - Direct Message is a private message you can send to a twitter user. U can only send a DM to a user who follows who.
  9. The only “retweet” button available on the web doesn’t allow you to add your comment to the tweet so the only option is for you to copy, paste the tweet and then add your comment & post that edited tweet as a status. It will appear as a retweet. If you are tweeting using Twitter For Blackberry, Ubertwitter, Snaptu etc, those applications have “retweet” buttons so you only need to click that, add your comment and voila!
  10. Your tweets are public by default but there is an option to block them and make your profile private but I don’t like that option… so I’ll let you do ur own research on it.

This is a tweet, at the bottom is the name of the person who tweeted. She wrote “#Durbangirls” and the reason why she put the “hashtag/#” before the word means that if you click on that word, you will be able to see all the tweets that refer to that topic. Not only by that person but by anyone who has ever posted #DurbanGirls before. This is how “trending topics” are created. Lots of different people using a hashtag to group same topic tweets together. Hope this makes sense

Now here Bonang, retweeted what Fundzy said and added her own comment “Kwaaaa Ijangalala”…

In her retweet, she used my favourite way of retweeting but some people say this confuses newbies because it means you must read the tweet back to front.

Khanya retweets and replies to Bonang’s tweet (or retweet) and adds her own comment at the end “ and then?“

Now her retweet style is different to Bonang’s style… because here you can read the tweet like you usually read vele. The comment is only added at the end of the tweet. Personally I think this is very confusing because sometimes you can differentiate betweet what was tweeted by whom.

e.g. the tweet following will confuse the daylights out of anyone who doesn’t understand Twitter..

Confusing huh? Well… the above means this happened:

Fundzy tweeted “#Durbangirls, Bonang retweeted and added “kwaaaa ijangalala“, Khanya retweeted Bonang’s retweet and added “And then?” and Aurelia retweeted Khanya’s retweet of Bonang’s retweet of Fundzy’s tweet and added “LOL #DurbanGirls learn from the best!!”

Okay, the exact same thing happened with the next tweet, see if you can read what happened here?

Now the term “ho kobisa” , I don’t know what it is in english, is a common phenomenon on Twitter. You can send someone an indirect message by just tweeting as if your tweet is not aimed at a person, ekubeni we all know it is. This is completely acceptable.

They are addressing each other but without the names…

cheerleaders, referees and linesmen also do the same… and will do so by either throwing those blanket statements or actually “tweeting” the people they are siding with,  in case of a beef.

and at any point if you feel like tjo, things are gonna get out of hand, it is also acceptable to engage the people you are chatting to (or beefing with lol)

This is the end of the lesson (and beef). Now just a tip. In the above tweet, Bonang started her tweet with the names of the people she was addressing. Now generally people who follow her would see her “tweets” but in a case where she does the above, only people who follow both her and Aurelia would see this tweet. That would be because she started her tweet with Aurelia’s name.

Now I’m not the only twitter addict around here so I hope the bloggers will share more of their twitter tips as well. I hope this lesson was both informative and entertaining :-)

    LOL BS you are creative. On Twitter beef, I agree with that girl who said that was genaralization. I understand why they got offended because they are from Durban. And that njangalala word is quite a strong word judging by the definition on twitter and even Bonang didn’t deny it. She said “Yep! Yep! Yep!” after that word was defined. She is the one who started all this fight because Fundi only tweeted Durbangals like she said and Bonang jumped on it to push her own agenda like she long wanted to say something about Durban gals. Fundzy could have meant something positive about Durban gals but Bonang made the poor girl’s tweet all negative. Apperantly Durban gals phoned her (Fundzy) man coz I saw her tweet saying “please don’t call my man about your insecurities enhance your calmness.” I was even surprised that they have her man’s numbers. Even that question from Bonang to those girls is lame question, I mean duh! you said Durban gals so that tweet is directed to Durban gals and those gals are from Durban even though you didn’t mention their names.

    Kiara: the whole point of Twitter is to follow people so that you can follow the concersations so why don’t u follow them instead of going through ‘find people’? You are making things difficult for urself.

    To change ur name go to ‘Settings’ on top and click on HELP (also on top) for their Frequently Asked Questions and answers.

    Do what I’ve just told u and u won’t be confused and yes u do have to type the RT urself when tweeting on the web. Web tweeting sucks.

    Only thing I think is tha ppl in media seem 2 forget that with every single tweet ur basically giving the general public access in2 ur personal life.     @KIARA click SETTINGS and then go to USERNAME and change it there..

    Also, another way of checkin conversations between 2 people is “search name, then all their convos will appear, incl the people they chatting to” ..and if you click “in reply to @username” underneath the tweet, u can see the original tweet which the person replied to!
