That’s A Country United…

June 8, 2010 by

Look I’ve always known my past was going to come back to haunt me but one thing I didn’t know was that it was going to be in a form of a ball called Jabulani/Jo-bulani or what ever its called!

My love for the game of soccer is similar to my love for George W. Bush, and I’m not even an American so no prize for guessing what that means! Six years ago when South Africa was announced as the host country for this World spectacular, I knew that I was going to face my demons at some point and be the odd one out in a country that waited so long for world recognition, and acceptance in the global village either as a world class country or tourist destination of choice! I have survived plenty of PSL seasons, let alone World Cup tournaments so again, I thought this too was gonna be a walk in the park! Boy was I wrong!

The hype is contagious, I haven’t seen anything that spreads this fast since the H1N1 outbreak! In the past weeks I’ve found myself doing things that are so out of character for me . I traded my ultimate pastimes for TV soccer viewing, going to Soccer City in support of Bafana Bafana, googled soccer players and letting soccer into my heart!

I still can’t blow the vuvuzela, Rome wasn’t built in a day so bear with me! I’m flying my flag so high I can’t imagine my life post the World Cup! So between the diski dance, the words to waka waka, learning foreign launguages and my soccer gear? I can officially say feel it! It is here!

But hayi this worldcup is gonna milk us dry uyazi? There are just way too many things that need to be bought all of a sudden! Car mirrors will never be the same, and for the first time it doesn’t really matter whether you drive a Skorokoro or a German car, ok’salayo we all have one thing in common, South African Flags protruding from our cars, now that’s a country united!

TJO

tjo! As seen on twitter…
