Miss SA Teen Timeline

August 25, 2010 by

It’s that time of the year again when most of us wait eagerly to see which two South African ladies will be parachuted into the world of glitz and glamour. The Miss SA and Miss SA Teen headquarters are abuzz with activity as they are in the process of selecting the 2010 contestants for the coveted tittles.

I’m sure that once in a while it’s wiser to take a walk down memory lane to see the road already travelled. With this said, here is a timeline of all the former Miss SA Teens I can trace. I would rather do this on Miss Teens as the judges have never gone wrong here in terms of crowning real beauties with brains. All these girls are very prettyful, whereas with Miss SA the Judges more often than not confuse the judging criteria with that of the SPELLING BEES.

Sally-Ann Kopa (2001)

Ok I don’t remember much about her except that she used to date the late Brown of Selimathunzi during her reign. Oh and that she was apparently in a relationship with a non-South African guy who did some things to her that no women ever deserves to endure. I tried googling her name but nix google doesn’t recognize her at all. Anyways, anyone who has Andile‘s contacts (Khumbule’khaya) please give me so we can trace the whereabouts of this hottie. Sally-Ann Kopa sis ama-fans wakho aya ku khumbula. Buya ekhaya sisi.

Phuthi Khomo (2002)

I remember her walking ka le-side and thinking OWK! Nonetheless, she took the crown home and had the brain cells to make the title work for her. Once listed among the most prosperous Miss What-whats in SA, Khomo has a resume that includes presenting the SABC music show ONE (there was Phuthi before there was Bonang), a three year stint on Egoli, YFM on weekends, being the face of Palmolive, Mini Cooper, Mtunzini.com and Generations. Talk about overachieving. She also dated Walter Mokoena. Speaking of dating, she is the presenter of a new reality dating show Rivals in Romance.

Masechaba Dlengezele (2003)

Although she is what one would term a former beauty queen who has seen some bad publicity in her life, she has since moved past all that to paint her legacy the only way she can. She happens to have more brains, spunk and humility than hunger for fame. She studied for and obtained a BA Corporate Communications Degree at UJ, where she is currently doing her honours level. Like I said she is not into fame, she mainly does corporate gigs. Bridal shows and beauty shoots are also her happy hunting grounds. She was a face of Avon at some point and is one of the outgoing Kickoff soccerbabes. She is also very active in the community service front.

Raelene Rorke (2004)

If there’s one person who was born to be a beauty queen it has to be Raelene. She has a great body, face and the brains to back it up. Not just a world peace ambassadress if you get my drift. She tried Miss Teen in 2002 and emerged 2nd princess besides being the youngest contestant that year. Fast-forward to 2004 she took the sash home. She has went on to win Miss City Press and made history as the only former Miss teen to enter Miss SA, but sadly, she only made top 5. This qualified Industrial Psychologist has since swapped the ramps and magazine shoots for corporate suites and is also pursuing business interests. She is very active in the community service front; she was the mentor for the fan dancers during the world cup and has represented South Africa at the World Economic Forum for two consecutive years.

Now this is the ultimate beauty queen. Had the Miss SA judges crowned her when she entered we wouldn’t have had a beauty queen who used the word FLIP in front of world wide dignitaries. #justsaying#

PS: I also hear that a certain former Miss SA (whose name I cannot mention for legal reasons) was called by the organisers to enter and she won just like that. If this is true then I say they better give the same call to Raelene next year because she has a lot of potential to represent South Africa on the global arena.

Bertha Le Roux (2005)

I don’t have racist tendencies or anything like that but I genuinely don’t remember anything about this girl. I only saw her twice, the day she was crowned by Raelene and when she handed over to Zizo. And we thought Nicole Flint is keeping a low profile? Anyways, if anyone knows her whereabouts please help a brother locate her. I love my blondes.

Zizo Beda (2006)

She is probably the only Miss SA teen who is not fond of weaves, but nonetheless, she makes natural hair look hot. Perhaps her distinctive image combined with her superb vocal abilities and incredible aura are the reasons her career is going at the rate it is. She started on YOTV after Miss Teen and later moved to Selimathunzi. She also had a clothing line at Legit prior to becoming the face to Garnier. In between her demanding career she engages in numerous community outreach projects and she is also completing her journalism degree via UNISA.

Moloko Masemola (2007)

Besides that I HAD a thing for her, I also loved her for being a Mopedi. She was termed a reluctant beauty queen as she wasn’t shy to vocalize her desire to be known for her intellectual climate, sports (think twice is you thought Caster is the only HOT Pedi girl that loves and excels in sports) and giving back to the community than just someone who is beautiful. She wanted to pursue a career in the medical field. Let’s hope that’s what she is busy with. How else do we explain her loud silence? During her reign she supported, hopefully she still continues to support, the iThemba Breast Cancer Foundation and The Tapologo AIDS Hospice.

Kopano Mocwane (2008)

Born and raised in Rustenburg, this accounting student says the role of Miss SA Teen is everything she has wanted. She also loves fashion and sports. Like any self-respecting young lady in SA, she regards Basetsana Kumalo as her role model. She‘s also been very active in community service work.

Chante Janjies (2009)

She was born to an Italian father and a Xhosa mother, you’d swear God was flaunting when he created her. God’s grandeur captured. Young as she is, she happens to be a very competent communicator, an academic and a very talented actress. She also has TV presenting under her belt.

Note to Miss SA 2010 judges: Please bear in mind that Miss SA is not the Spelling Bees Contest. We are tired of handsome Beauty Queens for the sake of brains. If Miss SA Teen can crown girls that have both physical beauty (screw inside beauty we all have that but are not necessarily beauty queen material) and brains, so can you.

Nice refreshing article Hasting but I’m missing one of my fav Miss Teens Gina Athans. I don’t remember which year she was but I think just after Sally-Ann. She went on to marry and subsequently divorce a Jordanian billionaire. She does a lot of FHM shoots and Top Billing profiled her after her divorce. Do you remeber her. She’s a Greek Goddess that one.

I was so dissappointed few weeks back when Chante was on Mo flava’s show asking for sponsors to go for some miss teen universe thingy somewhere oorkant, she is the reigning miss teen, she should not find herself in a position where she is on radio hassling for sponsors.

The whole thing left me rather dissappointed by the fact that this young woman was given the opportunity to build contacts over 10 months for such instances but by the looks of it she failed to do so. I could be wrong but looking at the likes of bo Bassie, they really used the crown to the best of their abilities and made it work for them. If it is not already happening, it would be a good idea to get ex beauty queens to mentor the current beauty queens and show them how it is done.

I agree with you 100% @fruitcake, kanti why are the owners of Miss Teen not helping her. I wonder if she did eventually go to the Miss Teen Universe thingy. On the other hand I also think sponsors are not buying into beauty queens anymore.

Ayibo guys you missed the 1st miss teen SA that indian chick that got pregnant was in labour in the bathroom or something my memory doesnt serve me well but she caused a huge scandal, she was the first miss SA Teen yaaaah powers of Google Charnelle Dennis, then there was Sally, then Gina Athanassiou

  11. Buhlebonga on Wed, 25th Aug 2010 11:14 am

Gina Athans was THE best Miss SA Teen ever and its such a pity she didn’t cross over to Miss SA! That girl would have been a knock out at Miss Universe!!!
Raelene, raelene, Raelene. Is there a bueaty pageant she hasn’t entered I mean this girl has been ALL OVER!!!
Sun International is failing now and I think they must give back the rights to Miss SA and Miss SA Teen to Doreen Morris. Did you guys see what a hot mess Nicole Flint was at Miss Universe only because they wouldnt get her a proper dress? She came eighth for petes sake, Imagine if she had had a stunning dress she could have been in the Top 5???
So sad about the Chante thing.
Sally Ann Kopa must come back shame!

Raylene came to our office yesterday, the girl is beauty and grace personified, I was just so taken with her and froze to be woken up by our receptionist laughing her a@@ off at my frozen state. Beautiful girl indeed, she has since swoped the swimsuits for a corporate suit.
