Interview with DJ Cleo

September 1, 2010 by

I had been trying to set up this interview way before the World Cup and I was told to wait until AFTER Philip because Cleo was busy doing shows during that time. The World Cup is over now and so I thought LET’S DO THIS and guess what?? Cleo was still busy and had to squeeze me in between flights. He had just landed from Botswana and had a bit of time to kill at the airport before taking off to Namibia so as much as I would have loved to spend more time with him, I had to make do with what was available.

From the little time we spent together I realised he is a very smart, passion driven and playful guy. He is a perfectionist and is not afraid to speak his mind especially about things he doesn’t like. I was also forced to choose Orange juice over a strawberry smoothie because apparently it’s unhealthy and will damage my Appendix ntoni ntoni. I was not impressed because I personally don’t like being told what to do especially when it comes to what goes into my stomach. Anyway I had to just pretend I was game with the Juice and only because he was paying for it otherwise bekuzomoshakala stru….hheheh.

Here are my few minutes with one of Mzansi Entertainment’s most successful men.

Kiki: When did you break into the music Industry? Because to be honest on my side the song that introduced you to me was Goodbye.

DJ Cleo: Goodbye was 2005 and that was my 2nd album, my 1st album was in 2004.In 2005 I also released Bricks (Face Brick) and prior to that It was Pitch Black Afro, I did Mandoza’s Top Sgelekeqe, The Comeback ya Doc Shebeleza, did some work with Kabelo, also Spykos (Birthday yami), Mzekezeke (Akekhu Gogo ) , Brown Dash ( Puff & Pass ) and Mzekezeke ( Sguqa ngamadolo).Between 2001-2004 I was doing house songs, compilations released by DJ Fresh.

Kiki: Tjo Cleo you have done so much?

DJ Cleo: Yap, another one was House Of  TBose Volume 1 & 2 and In one my songs sang that lady the wife or EX wife kaBuyile. The one who was on the cover of Drum Magazine recently, her name is Carol (and he is laughing)

Kiki: Oh so uCarol ichomee yakho?

DJ Cleo: No no no she just sang on one my songs, we worked together that’s it…

Kiki: heheh ok. Which artists would you like to work with that you haven’t worked with before?

DJ Cleo: I’d love to work with Apple Seed aka Jah Seed or Apricot Seed, I don’t know.

Kiki: And wena what type of music do you like besides YOUR music?

DJ Cleo: I listen to Jazz all the way.

Kiki: Hayi bo Cleo JAZZ?? as in Jazz Jazz?

DJ Cleo: Yes the likes of Four Play, Take 6, Incognito..the list is endless.

Kiki: Are you Bleksem??

DJ Cleo: YES

Kiki: Tjo a straight yes just like that? Are you really Bleksem??

DJ Cleo: Yes I am for real.

Kiki: But I sometimes see you and ‘Bleksem’ on stage at the same time.

DJ Cleo: It’s just to prolong the lifespan ya Bleksem the masked character. Truth is Bleksem is actually me on stage & DJ Cleo is the DJ.

Kiki: And that was inspired by?

DJ Cleo: I’ve always wanted to be an artist and I guess I was too shy back then and couldn’t do it. But I guess a few hits behind your belt give you the necessary confidence to do whatever you can with the Mic. When you are famous and you’ve got hits then your confidence level just goes up.

Kiki: BOOM

DJ Cleo: I am confident enough to say I am a hit maker, which I find is a problem for many because they confuse my CONFIDENCE with ARROGANCE. But I really don’t give a sh!t honestly. When I left Springs to come to Joburg to seek fame and fortune, no one did me favours I had to work hard to get where I am. There were a few people that helped me and I have always been grateful to them and they know it but all those people that think I’m gonna lick ass just to get to the top they can forget it, not a chance…

Kiki: Tjowee

DJ Cleo: I am where I am because of my hard work. There was no musician in my family, no connections blah blah blah, I had to WORK

Kiki: So you had to start from zero to build your own empire because no one actually paved the way for you from the family side?

DJ Cleo: You see, and then you get all these other guys trying to bring me down just because I am doing my thing. Some spreading rumours that I’m gay, others leave the stable and talk badly about me and others write stories that I raped my dog and all that crap, like I give a f*ck?

Kiki: Are you gay?

DJ Cleo: No I’m not gay, I am very straight.

Kiki: Are you married, girlfriend or kids?

DJ Cleo: I am not married because marriage takes away that spark in a relationship but I have a girlfriend & 2 kids.(at this point in my mind I am just going oh DAMN IT he is taken ,now there goes my crush…hehheh )

Kiki: So, what type of women do you like?  I mean the ones you have a crush on? You can drop names.

DJ Cleo: Hayi no Kiki I cant drop any names because I am involved. So out of respect for my partner I will not mention any names…

Kiki: Ok, I understand.

DJ Cleo: I love the kind of woman that she is (his partner), a woman that would look after me when I’m sick, a woman that takes care of me and nurse me to health. A woman that cooks well, that understands what I mean by healthy lifestyle, a woman that doesn’t smoke like her, a woman that doesn’t drink like her, a woman that’s a good mother and that completes me.

Kiki: So you don’t smoke or drink alcohol?

DJ Cleo: Not at all, I don’t smoke & I don’t drink. To me Eskhaleni 7 is my best album by far because we have just found common footing in our relationship as well and it shows in the album, when you are happy THAT just comes out.

Kiki: Wow, I see the love it’s written all over your face. Is she the mother of your two kids or they have different mothers?

DJ Cleo: Yes she is the mother.

Kiki: So how do you deal with negativity? We all know that there was a rumour that you are gay & also the dog story that was front page news. How do you handle such?

DJ Cleo: All I can say is as long as people can afford to talk sh!t about you then you are news worthy. The minute they stop talking that’s when you should worry.

Kiki: Oh so you enjoy all the negativity?

DJ Cleo: Its not that I enjoy it but I feel it’s a good thing to have negativity you know. Even if you go on my Twitter profile, you will see that all my ‘favourites’ is all the hate mail or hate tweets.

Kiki: Do you get hate Tweets?

DJ Cleo: Yes I do and I save them (see below) because it’s a constant reminder that not everyone likes you and you must also try and please those that don’t like you kancane nje. Don’t suck up, don’t lick ass or whatever but at the same time consider it.

(The Hate Tweets)

Kiki: So how is your relationship with uBricks no DJ What What, are things ok??

DJ Cleo: There is no relationship..and where are they now Kiki?

Kiki: Hahahah Cleo, I don’t know. I haven’t heard anything from them lately.

DJ Cleo: Exactly..Next question please!

(During this time Glen Lewis came through to say hi to Cleo and then Cleo said he will make an Interview for me with Glen happen, Glen responded “Make it happen like you make HITS happen”) I think that was sweet of Glen to say that even Cleo looked humbled about that statement.

Kiki: I read somewhere I think it was your web site, that you are planning to venture into TV Production. How far with that?

DJ Cleo; Watch the space, its coming. The best is not to rush into things and raise people or even your own expectations because you will end up disappointed.

Kiki: Have you considered breaking into acting?

DJ Cleo: That too, just watch the space.

Kiki: Please stop giving me YES & NO answers, you will bore me and I don’t like that.

DJ Cleo: You are the 1st woman that said I bore her

Kiki: What do you expect me to say with your Yes,No straight to the point answers mara? I actually thought I was gonna be able to crack you but you are tough.

DJ Cleo: You still can.

Kiki: Which countries have you performed at?? He just took out his passport and started counting.

DJCleo: Botswana, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Dubai, Swaziland, France, Australia, Malasyia, Kenya, USA, Ireland, UK, Namibia, Lesotho, I will be going to Canada soon.

Kiki: And from all these countries that you have been to, which one can you say there was the best crowd?

DJ Cleo: No doubt it’s Dubai.

Kiki: Ok your latest album is Eskhaleni 7 that means it’s your 7th album neh? Where does the Inspiration come from?

DJ Cleo: Yes it is my 7th album and every album gets to move the coma in my bank balance to the right. So that inspires my albums.

Kiki: Kanti how old are you, and what kind of a child were you?

DJ Cleo: I am 30yrs old. I went to 8 schools in my entire life and I was expelled 4 times.

Kiki: Expelled 4 times?? For??

DJ Cleo: It was just the naughtiness as a child and also I had A.D.D so I used to struggle a lot but soon found a balance. I don’t regret anything that happened in my life. I believe that everything happens for a reason.

Kiki: So looking back at Cleo as a child and Cleo now, what makes you different from back then or are you still the same?

DJ Cleo: I used to be very shy, I am still shy now but I am more confident. Back then chicks didn’t want to have anything to do with me but today some chicks dig me, not all of them but some. I appeal to some actually I appeal to just a few. I was never the most fashionable kid in school because my parents never believed in spending that much money on kids, but now I am a compulsive shopper & spender. I went to Botswana with no shoes yesterday, just so I could buy shoes that side.

Kiki: Wow, and how do you keep in shape? I heard that on club 808 you said you go to gym 5 times a week. I missed the show coz I only found out that you were on it when the show ended. If I had known before time I would have watched it.

DJ Cleo: But I had been tweeting the whole week where were you?

Kiki: I’m sorry.

DJ Cleo: Yes I go to gym minimum is 5 times a week.

Kiki: And what is your normal day like, what time do you wake up?

DJ Cleo: I get up at 6am because I have to see my kids to school. Then after that I just chill in bed watch TV getting ready for gym. My days vary, some days are very busy with interviews, meetings back to back and sometimes studio the whole day.

Kiki: What do you do for fun?

DJ Cleo: I play soccer, squash, I bike and I play music, make music & listen to music. Everything around me revolves around music or sport.

Kiki: How do you find the talent? I mean most of the times it’s the talent that YOU launch and yes they end up moving to other stables but it’s you that introduces them to the nation. How and where do you find them?

DJ Cleo: I am the best talent scout there is for me. I am blessed to be able to know what I want and to be able to find the people that I have found.

KikiMy pay off question: If you were to die today at this point in time when your carrier is like WOW! What would you like to be remembered as? To me right now when I think of Cleo the 1st thing that comes to mind is your incredible million dollar smile. You have such a beautiful smile.

DJ Cleo: Ncoooo thank you (he blushes)

Kiki: I know your woman, family & kids will remember you differently and more on a personal level. To ordinary people how would you like them to remember DJ CLEO??

DJ Cleo: I can’t really say but however I can influence how people remember me and I think I have done that well for as long as I have been around in the Industry and in the public eye. I know I’m the sh!t and I want people to remember me as that guy that was ‘The sh!t’…talent gone to soon. I don’t need anyone to validate weather I am the sh!t or not, I KNOW I am because I have worked hard to be the sh!t that I am today. I am not being arrogant I am being confident. You need to remind yourself, don’t wait for people to do stuff for you, don’t wait for people to say you are good, tell yourself that YOU are good but don’t say it to people’s faces tell yourself first. I don’t say it to people’s faces even though by extension this Interview is going on the web for people to read but I am sure you will choose my words carefully as well. If I had to wait for people to tell me I’m the sh!t then no one would have because people didn’t even know that I make music, they didn’t even know I could DJ,I had to go out there and say “DJ Fresh I do ABC help me, Lance Stehr (Ghetto Ruff) and TK (TS Records)..I do ABC….LET’S WORK”

Kiki: Thank you so much for your time, have a safe trip to Namibia.

DJ Cleo: You’re welcome.

Ends.

Cool interview! Very inspiring this Cleo guy. I met him the night Lebo Mathosa died. She asked me to sing to her and I sang Great Is Thy Faithfulness. She loved it so much that she called Cleo and asked me to sing for him. Then she gave me her number and told me to call her that Monday and we’d go to studio. I wonder if Cleo still remembers this story….

    @Kiki
Anywho, for the future, note that it’s not “carrier” but rather “career”. A carrier is an object that carries something. Eg. An aeroplane, a box, etc.

Mna I have no problem with people moving on but when benyela umthunzi(burn bridges) it shows stupidity especially when loyo mthunzi is such a hit maker. Look at all the people he mentioned those were all hits. I looooove that vuvuzela song.

I enjoyed reading this interview….missed a couple of calls!

Cleo seems to be a good guy, I would like to see how he interacts with his family….”boy your dad is the sh!t” heheheheh

    Thanks Kiki, thanks JC!

  54. kakapana on Fri, 3rd Sep 2010 9:35 am

    LOL @ Double Delicious

  55. Jikka on Fri, 3rd Sep 2010 11:36 am

    Lurved the interview.

I like Cleo’s creativity. He’s a maestro at making hits. However, he tends to be my least favourite when it comes to club-deejay as he most/mainly just plays his music or his protege’s songs *not hidin’*. Im all for self-promotion, but as a clubber i prefer a dj that plays variety – other dj’s songs also,,,not just yours.

His Whk performance was just the sh!t. Boy is good. His stage performance was off tha hook and the crowd was just craaayze.

Keep em hits comin’ my ma se kind,,,,

  56. Smatsatsa sa Welkom on Sat, 4th Sep 2010 7:00 pm

Love his work but hate the fact that he never mentions his first born child. He has three kids not two!

  57. Kiki on Mon, 6th Sep 2010 9:36 am

Hau,Cleo has 3kids?? Manje why is he saying he has 2?? *confused*

  58. Smatsatsa sa Welkom on Mon, 6th Sep 2010 9:09 pm

His first born is a girl, she is 8years old, lives in Welkom and looks just like him.He never mentions the 1st born in any interview, pathetic but true!

  59. Brown Shuga on Mon, 6th Sep 2010 10:03 pm

Smatsatsa, baby mama’s initials JK? Is the baby mama’s mom in nursing?

  60. Smatsatsa sa Welkom on Tue, 7th Sep 2010 6:03 am

    100% correct Brown Shuga!

I seriously had issues with DJ Cleo as my first impressions of him (PE 2005)were very unpleasant. He was rude to a very excited fan who did nothing to offend him.You know PE and groupie moments.I guess he was having one of those bad days. However,I never had issues with his music at all.Infact I love it.After reading this interview,I can safely say I am over whatever issues I had,he sounds like an ok guy to me.Kiki…hayi sisi wam I must say you are very good with interviews,I thoroughly enjoy them…Keep up the good work.

Yes,I know I was late ekufundeni this interview, but better late than never.
