Loyiso Gola Chats About His New TV Show
September 23, 2010 by Brown Shuga
Loyiso Gola is back on Television and if press releases are to be believed, he is coming back with a show that is bound to cause noise, shock, lawsuits and alles! I love drama so even before seeing it, I’m already a fan of the show heheh.
Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola (LNN in short) is a satirical talk show that relies on hearsay and unconfirmed facts (lol, love it) and even though it is set in a professional formal news studio, the content promises to be mad funny. I decided to put my BEEF with eTV’s publicity department aside, just so I could bring you a quick chat with Loyiso, about what to expect from Late Nite News.

Brown Shuga: How did Late Nite News come about? Did you approach eTV with a proposal or did they come to you?
Loyiso Gola: I was actually tired of people approaching me and asking me to do their sitcoms, game shows and all kinds of crazy shows that I was not interested in. I have not done any TV for the last 2 years because I’d been working on this particular show.
We took the show to eTV as a proposal (well, it was a piece of paper detailing the show) which they rejected. Then we shot a pilot, which pretty much blew them away. My advice is to forget the proposal, shoot a pilot.
BS: How would you describe the show? I got excited reading the press release!
Loyiso: It’s like myth buster for the news, we scrutinize the news. We make the news funny. We want the show to be a catalyst to debate.
BS: And you think South Africans will enjoy it?
Loyiso: There are some crazy things that happen in the country, that need to spoken about. The cool thing about the show, we don’t have opposition agendas. Our agenda is to be funny and we think South Africans will enjoy that.
BS: How involved are you in terms of what goes into an episode?
Loyiso: I have “executive producer” credit so I am very involved in the whole process & Kagiso Lediga is my co-producer. He is my co pilot and heads the creative process. We have a great group of contributors, graduates from Harvard, Howard and Columbia. They are an incredible group of minds (what’s the plural for brains?).
BS: LOL I don’t know… Is this a one-man show?
Loyiso: David Kibuuka and Riaad Moosa are the field reporters, probably the most opinionated reporters you will ever find on TV.
BS: Why those comedians specifically?
Loyiso: I like the way David Kibuuka sees the world, when the show got picked up by eTV , I knew he had to be involved somehow. He took a lot of convincing (there is nothing a good old bribe can’t solve). I would give the world to have Dr Moosa on my team.
BS: Obviously people are going to compare your show to Trevor Noah’s. How is it “better” or “different”?
Loyiso: I only compete with myself, which is a very difficult thing to do. Well, our show adopts a news format, which is very different to anything you have ever seen on South African TV.
BS: Will your sidekick the “F” word be featuring on the show too?
Loyiso: YES WE CAN SAY FUCK ON THE SHOW
BS: Death by Beeps! How many episodes have been commissioned?
Loyiso: 13 episodes
BS: Having mentioned Trevor, I need to ask: What’s your comment on the joke stealing allegations?
Loyiso: I think Trevor is a very funny dude. I feel if anyone has a problem with Trevor they must address it with him. I must state that I personally don’t think he steals jokes.
BS: Explain your twitter rants please! What causes them? Weed, alcohol, drugs, or is it just you being your no-holds-barred self?
Loyiso: When I did the rant, I was sober as a judge. I was just pissed off at certain things and I just wanted to get it off my chest. I was annoyed by mediocrity that we accept in South Africa from art to government.(Read HERE)
BS: Wonder what kinda rants get thrown when you’re not sober! hehe. Thanks Loyiso!
Ends.

Eish, this guy. There is just something unnerving about him. He also seems and sounds arrogant most times. At the risk of of being attacked here, I have a thing against Xhosa guys. There’s just something that annoys me about them. Maybe that’s why I feel this way about Loyiso too.
Anyway, I’ll probably watch the first episode just to see what it’s about.

I’m mos def not watching the show unless TANNIE Evita Bezuidenhout is the weather lady

Mhhhmmm Loyiso Gola, Loyiso Gola—- now this one strikes me as a mediocre comedian who uses profanity and thinks it’s funny. Unfortunately his massive ego doesn’t let him see that he’s just not up to scratch as a comedian. With that said I’ll watch the show hopefully to change my views about him.
Zeal on Thu, 23rd Sep 2010 6:44 am
Joh, you guys mara!! Lol, I don’t really know him, but when I read his ranting tweets, I liked him already!!
So here’s to LNN!! Ayoubarrrrr!!

@ Zida and SilentBlogger…I’m all about local xelebs making it big-time kodwa they must learn to differentiate between being big stars and not necessarily be bigheaded. uGuy has major attitude problem and I don’t really think he has done anything that significant to be arrogant in the first place…he just doesn’t have the right nje. #My opinion#
Like Dineo Ranaka told Kelly Khumalo… “It’s ok to be a graceful DIVA”

who still remembers Somizi’s show? it was Madam sometin

Loyiso is a different breed of comic…he doesn’t get excited or run around on stage. My friends say he’s monotonous – I think it’s either you get him and you don’t. He’s still in business so I guess he’s got his following.
That said, I think this show is going to be a brilliant platform for him – I think it’s going to be funny. I was a huge fan of Bill Maher’s “POLITICALLY INCORRECT” show – and I’m expecting something of a similar calibre. With the kinda headlines we have in Mzansi and the team he’s working with – I’m expecting laughs for days.
Let’s go LNN.

Loyiso Gola, Kagiso Lediga, Riaad Moosa and David Kibuuka on one show! There’s no way I’m missing it!
Brown Shuga on Thu, 23rd Sep 2010 9:07 am
Zida… lol you must just be strong! lol. re: not liking Xhosa guys.
Zida and Hastings… those exact reasons why you do not like Loyiso, are exactly why this show will be a hit. I’m tired of fake people in the industry.. Loyiso is none of that & I really hope etv will allow them to just be.
P.S. I used to have this HUGE ass CRUSH on David Kibuuka…
Buhle Fab on Thu, 23rd Sep 2010 9:43 am
heheheeeeee @ BS manje what happened to that crush? lol I love Riaad Moosa and i sure will be watching, eish mara im into khumbulekhaya as well haai

Joey Rasdien is the funniest comedian in Mzansi.
Vesa on Thu, 23rd Sep 2010 10:53 am

Buhlebonga on Thu, 23rd Sep 2010 10:56 am
I like Loyiso. He’s one of a SA Comedians who make me laugh. Him and Kagiso Lediga.
I bet I’m gonna enjoy this show and I really cannot wait to have fun. I know its gonna be better than that Noah show on Mnet which i hear is a total bore!!!
KK on Thu, 23rd Sep 2010 10:57 am
I am one of those who thinks the man aint that funny but has something real about him.His jokes make you think which most people dnt really want to do.Mara Kagiso is there and the Dr comedian is really funny.I am just worried that he will be competing with Khumbulekhaya, mathata feela.
There is think line between ego and confidence,I think South Africans dnt like seeing confident people,PERIOD…
fruitcake on Thu, 23rd Sep 2010 11:12 am
The only local comedian who does it for me at the moment is Trevor Noah, simply because he keeps it clean. I dont think that ke target market ya Loyiso, I honestly cant handle the over use of the F word.
Zida on Thu, 23rd Sep 2010 11:17 am
Eish BS, I’m just gonna have to be strong kanene. lol
I also do like Riaad Moosa…very funny and smart.
LeeM on Thu, 23rd Sep 2010 11:22 am
Kagiso Lediga!!!! I will be watching, the guy cracks me up before he even opens his mouth.
gifted on Thu, 23rd Sep 2010 12:26 pm
okay, personally i’ve seen all four comedians and only loyiso still gets me to laugh.
the other three, well…..
1. kagiso, he’s not funny anymore. he’s fluent and all that but, fluent is not funny…you know. he needs to go back and try to remember what made him funny when he started.
2. kedibone, he laughs at his jokes which are not always funny and you like ‘dude, why you laughing coz that wasnt funny’? naye he needs to go back and rework whatever is obviously not working for him.
3. riaad: haai no, no comment about him. saw him on a dvd (hope he is the right person) and nothing said ‘go watch me live’. nothing excites me about him.
so, sizo bona if maybe this show will redeem what is left of their ‘careers’.
Lady Guava on Thu, 23rd Sep 2010 12:37 pm
I hope Kagiso will make a bit of an effort, small one like taking a bath before going to the studio, and shaving hle, is it too much to ask marwaaa. Phela the hobboic look is soo 19matswele.
I still think Khumbul’ikhaya is the funniest reality program we have on the welfare channel, and it will be difficult to split myself between the two.
Loyiso yena wa bora shem.
lwandie on Thu, 23rd Sep 2010 2:20 pm
Yaa Loyiso is a bit hit and miss with me.definitely his excessive use of profanity is what misses me by a mile the same way Chris Rock does, but when he hits the mark he does it really well.By his own admission on one of his interviews -Comedy doesn’t come natural to him and that is evidnt when he is on stage-yet he makes up for it thankfully by not trying to hard but by being himself which I think is his winning point.
Like everything will give him a chance,no point in writing off someone before they start.
