What Beyonce & Rebecca Malope Have In Common!

September 2, 2010 by

In my entire existence on this planet, it never would have dawned on me that the name Rebecca Malope andBeyonce Knowles could ever be used in the same sentence. What could the two women possibly have in common, besides their age?

Yes! It’s true! Both ladies are the same age, but due to fear of being sued for defamation, I choose to withhold which of the two ladies is lying about their real age. So its information I will go to the grave with. Jokes aside… Both women are dynamic in their chosen fields and lead the pack to follow their blazing trails. They both have undeniable stage presence and unforgettable stage antics.

One famous for rolling around on stage, tearing apart her “David Tlale” designs whilst speaking in tongues and praising God:

The other famous for also tearing apart her “House Of  Dereon” costumes on stage whilst singing in tongues and “allegedly” worshipping the devil.

Besides those few comparisons, do you think anything else can tie them in one sentence? Which is what brings us here:

A likening tie between the two divas from different worlds, more shocking than you would have ever anticipated:

So ladies, hold on to your wigs and weaves, Gents hold on to your man-bags, Gays hold on to any man you can hold onto…Its going to be a fun ride of revelations.

At this point in time, it has become public knowledge that Super Diva Beyonce’ Knowles is notorious for the “revolving door” that has specially been built for her in American courts to cater to the annual law suits against her for “song-stealing”.

As a huge Beyonce fan, I used to be in denial about all of this and ruled off her continuous law battles as pure jealousy and people trying to bring her down.

It was not until 2006 when she released her hit album “BDAY” that my naivety was kicked out of my system and I took off my Rose-Coloured fan glasses and started seeing the truth for what it was.

On this particular album, was a song called “Resentment”.

A song which I had heard two years before Beyonce’s version came out, from a little unknown singer called; Victoria Beckham (formerly with the Spice Girls).

It is very normal for artists to record the same song, but due to record company politics or various other reasons, we get to hear only one version from one artist. E.g. Rihanna’s smash hit  “Umbrella” was originally commissioned to Mary.J.Blige, Britney Spears smash debut “Baby One More Time” was originally meant for the 90s super group “TLC”.

So hearing that Beyonce had recorded a song previously done by Victoria Beckham was no shock. Beyonce’s version was better anyway.

It was when I went through the writers’ credits on the album-sleeve that alarm bells started going off in my head.

In terms of melody, the two versions of the song are pretty much identical and the lyrical content is almost the same, except for one or two sentences that are different in the final verses of Beyonce’s version.

On the cover-sleeve of “BDay”, Beyonce has full-writers credits, She is credited as a song writer for the full song, when she only changed TWO sentences in the previously recorded song.

How does two changed sentences in an already written song, qualify someone as a writer?

Does that mean I can also go take out a  Shakespeare book in the Library, change a paragraph and claim it as my work?

It was from this point that I now realized, where there was smoke there was fire, and we had a “Beautiful Liar” amongst us.

This is just my view about these lawsuits, so don’t take my word as gospel:

Beyonce and her record company commission songs to writers, and if they find what could be a possible hit, they buy the songs from the writers and then pass them off as Beyonce-written songs and conveniently forget to put in the original writer’s name in the credits. Resulting in the continuous law-suits.

I could write a whole book about Beyonce’ songwriting woes, including the time fellow R&B singer; Ne-Yo called her out for claiming to have written the lyrics to her Billboard number one hit “Irreplaceable”, when he was the one who actually wrote it, revealing that she only helped with the melody.

But right now we don’t have the time or platform for my Tell-All book, So below you can see a short summary of the songs she’s been sued for. (All cases were settled quietly out of court.)

  • Sued for stealing the song “Baby Boy”- 2003
  • Sued for stealing the song “Survivor”- 2005
  • Sued for stealing the song “Kissing You”- 2007
  • Took credit for writing “Crazy In Love” when she didn’t
  • Took credit for writing “Irreplaceable” when she didn’t

Recently whilst listening to Beyonce’s cover version of Etta James’ songs from the “Cadillac Records Motion Picture Soundtrack”.

I came across her version of Etta’s; “All I Could Do Is Cry”. The lyrics of the song sounded awfully familiar.

Having learned to accept Bey’s song-stealing habits, I dismissed it as another stolen song.

I still  wanted to hear Etta James’ original version though, just to hear if Sister Bey altered the song to her liking… maybe changed a coma or full stop to get writers’ credits.

Eventually after hearing Etta’s original version, which was recorded in the 60s, 70s. I was shocked and ashamed with myself to find that the songs were exactly the same and that Bey didn’t alter the song. So I knelt down and prayed to the Lord for forgiveness, For having falsely accused the Queen Bey of song-stealing, because just this one time she was innocent.

But the nagging feeling that I had heard the lyrics before, would not leave me.

It finally dawned on me where I had heard the lyrics… On Lebo Mathosa’s last album “Lioness”, in a track titled; “Should Have Been Me”. (listen HERE, click Track 11)

A song which the late Lebo Mathosa had always spoken about during her promotional rounds for the“Lioness” album, because it had been written for her by her good friend; REBECCA MALOPE!

I was in utter shock! Every single short strand of my brush-cut was trembling.

I went back to Lebo’s cover sleeve of “Lioness” to double check. And there it was; Lyrics by: L.Mathosa and R.Malope.

Lebo had stated in her interviews that Rebecca wrote the song, presented it to her, and Lebo co-wrote the song by adding to the chorus and the last few verses.

The first two verses were written by Rebecca and are exact copies of Etta James’s song; “All I Could Do Is Cry”. (listen HERE or HERE)

The lyrics are the same; Word for word, coma for coma, full stop to full stop. And there was no sampling credit for Etta James, as most do when they’ve borrowed another person’ intellectual property.

So with my analysis… Sis Ribs took Etta James’ song, gave it to Lebo Mathosa and passed it off as her own written work.

The Queen Of Gospel, exposed in a songwriting LIE! ala Beyonce’? Who would have imagined? Rebecca of all people???  Praise Gawwwd!

And that is what Queen Riebs and Sister Bey have in common, they have both been caught out in claiming song lyrics that did not originate from them.

The music industry is a cut throat industry and everyone has to do whatever they can to survive, its common knowledge that publishing and songwriting rights can earn authors a life-time of royalties.

But can artists not plagiaries and take food out of other people’s mouths?

If artists like Beyonce and Rebecca Malope can take writing credits for work that is not theirs. Who else has fooled us and gotten away with it?

Maybe “Nkalakatha” was originally recorded by Vinoliah Mashego,  maybe Arthur Mafokate’s break out hit; “Kaffir”, was originally penned by Patricia Lewis and Arthur only changed a few words and rode away with it as his own song. Who knows?

I guess we’ll never know…

I am a Beyonce fan,she is hot,has sex appeal, smart, she can sing and dance. As much as I am a fan ka Beyonce there are certain things that were revealed on this article that I didn’t know about,I guess we learn everyday. I knew she stole Irreplacable bcoz even Neyo spoke about it which later resulted in Bey giving credit to NeYo when she won an award for the track. I will not comment any further bcoz I don’t know much about Bey even though I like her.I will let those who know more about her comment. If this was about Tupac or Kanye then I was gonna grab my bowl of popcorn & take a day off…lol

Interesting and very well written post Zamani… I’m impressed.

As for Rebecca: WOW!!! My shock, when I heard the 2 songs! Wow! How does she do that? Do they think people only listen to SA music?
I wonder if she got worried when Cadillac Records came out….
I wish she cud be asked about this on LIVE tv so I cud see her reaction. My guess is she wud start the answer with a Halleluya & start praising Guard while she thinks of an answer.

Very disappointed in u Sis Ribs!

Addressing Ms Brown Shuga: I understand that blogging is about opinions and personal views, but does that close-off (lacking a suitable word) the concept of doing some research before one writes something? No, it shouldn’t. Because, in as much as one blogs based on their opinion, you’re still writing for people. Of course, not unless one is out to write complete crap about other people.

As for Zamani, I am surprise you did not mention the fact that one of the things these two ladies share in common is dancing in high-hills when they perform. Just goes to show just how much objective and wise you’re.

Thank you Ms Brown Shuga for responding. Please, take my hand, and we’ll find you yourself… LOL’…

Firstly, ewe, I am talking about this post.

Now, in as much as Rebecca Malope is not so educated, I am certain that she is well aware of the dangers that arises when one steals someone else’s song. So, don’t you think kukhona something WE don’t know when it comes to re-publishing and owning someone else’s song? How well do WE understand the process of tagging a song “your own” work where-as it isn’t??

This is the stuff Zamani should have done researched on before comparing two totally different situations.

Having said that, this is my opini-on’e…

Wena Kiki, I don’t know what you’re insinuating. I really don’t… Wena Fezzy, *SMH* *using Miranda Priestly’s voice* THAT’S ALL!

    1. Read the article. again.
    2. Read your response & see if it is in any way related to this post.
    3. If you have questions, address your “specific” questions “about the article” to Zamani. If he can write such an intelligent post, he sure can reply to your questions.
    4. If you have a question or comment about JC in general, my email address is lelob @ justcurious.co.za

    you find, I meant.

  43. musicguru on Thu, 2nd Sep 2010 11:49 am

ZAMANI dude, nys article! but jst to clarify somethings 4u..
in the music industry theres something called a Purchase Agreement.. u compose music and lyrics, I purchase yo rights.. therefore I will be the new owner of the music and lyrics.. because I bought the rights from you..and I don’t have to give u credit, because I am the new owner!
for eg, u buy a benz and u pay it off, its no longer owned by merc benz or the bank, its owned by mr abc..
Yes, Beyonce does purchase songs (that we know, its no secret) and once that is done, as per the agreement, theres no need to put the original writer on the credits cos they no longer have ownership..lawsuits come in when people don’t understand their contracts (for eg, zola/lance stehr.. dj cleo/dj what what..) and when they suddenly realize that they only got paid $50k and the song has become a hit and has made the artist millions!!!
writing melody is also credited as writing..just like creating the music is credited..
most writers will always say I wrote that song..for e.g. Keri Hilson says she wrote Ice Box, when in reality she actually co wrote it with other writers..
Beyonce is guilty of purchasing hits, that we know..but there’ll always b disputes with regards to the splits once a song is a hit..for eg, neyo saying beyonce didn’t write irreplaceable, that’s bullshit, she has claims to that song, so does he and the stargate crew (the team that does neyo’s beats)..
btw..resentment was originally written by (MAYFIELD CURTIS, NELSON CANDICE, MILSAP WALTER, KNOWLES BEYONCE)
your friend miss beckham just sang the song

  50. musicguru on Thu, 2nd Sep 2010 12:27 pm

    my bad.. Etta not Ella..
the thought of sis Ribs photocopying the lyrics and then handing them over 2 Lebo has made my day.. imagine *hallelujah, praise God..here’s a song i wrote for u sister* tht time she is busy praying that she dont get caught..
SA artists r notorious for stealing music from overseas artists..its a shame!

LELO pls take Dladla out for drinks…u guys seem to have unresolved issues…hehehehe

  52. Zamani on Thu, 2nd Sep 2010 12:40 pm

@MusicGuru I agree with everything you say.
But to avoid writting a Blog within a Blog.
Michael Jackson bought publishing rights to The Beatles songs. He owned their entire Library… But those songs are still credited to the original writers and not WRITTEN by Michael Jackson.
I think you missed the whole point of the article…It was not about “song ownership”, But rather Artist integrity!!!
As much as Beyonce may have ownership of the songs, she should atleast have enough integrity to not lie to the general public by saying she “PENNED” the songs.
And please go back to the article…Nowhere did I say Victoria Beckham WROTE Resentment,I said she recorded it first.

It was a song written for her during the “LOOSE” woman scandal.
Beyonce only acquired the song after it was WRITTEN for!!!and recorded by Victoria Beckham.
And thats not an opinion…Its a a FACT!

Ag maan if a person sold their rights to the song why would they then sue B? All these well known artists like taking chances qha, they know very well about music rights but they still dont credit. Daddy just did a song for a well known artist and she never gave him the CD only to find that he is not credited for his song which happens to be the hit in the album futhi nje I have so many othr stories kungasa and this thing makes me angry cause iyandilambisa.

buying publishing rights and buying an entire song are 2 different things..do u know what the difference is?

you says “i think you missed the whole point of the article…It was not about “song ownership”, But rather Artist integrity!!!”
i says “NO i didnt miss the point of your blog..i was clarifying what u missed..beyonce doesnt steal songs, she buys them from the original writers..and most of these contracts state tht the original writers will NOT get credit”

for the sake of not writing a blog within a blog i’m gonna ask you to prove your facts..

  59. musicguru on Thu, 2nd Sep 2010 1:04 pm

@Lela.. common mistake tht writers make in SA, when they write songs in studio, they dont sign contracts! then they act surprised when artist A uses the song in their album and claims that its their song..
if your Daddy can prove that its his song, he has a case and can get that money..similar with your other friends..
i have just assisted a number of writers who had music used on Joyous Celebration albums, and they got their monies!
its called the MUSIC BUSINESS, you gotta know your ish..
READ THOSE CONTRACTS properly and i see a whole lot of contracts so i know this..im not talking stuff i read or researched, this is first hand info..

MY APPOLOGIES TO JC,ZAMANI,BS, FELLOW BLOGERS & SILENT BLOGERS

I might be a Diva but I’m human and I know when I’m wrong and must apologize, so this is the time .
OK I admit I was tjatjarag, I just assumed that Zamani before reading the whole article, I just assumed that Zamani was talking about Beyonce being evil and worshiping the devil,
There was once an article that was circulating via email stating that Beyonce when she’s SASHA she’s evil blah, blah anyway let me not get into that now,
    I’m here to apologize..

ZAMANI: I understand very well that Blogging is one’s opinion BUT a proper research must be done especially when you’re blogging for the public like us.. For instance look at what MusicGuru has elaborated when it comes to music rights and what not, wena as a writer those are the things that u should have looked at Zamani before u compiled your article and posted on JC.
Great article by the way Zamani…

To wrap it up.. I am sorry all !! I love JC by the way but mostly I Silently Blog..

LEBZA4SHO : thanks for liking my name LOL !!

Ok… Let me leave the Music Industry jargon, and simplify it to a metaphore you used earlier.

When you pay off your benz and it no longer belongs to Mercedez. Yes it is your Benz! You own it and no one can take that away.

But when you meet people in the streets, Do you tell them…

“This is my Benz! I manufactured and DESIGNED it, I painted it…Its my work. This Benz I created it from scratch.”

If that does not clarify it…Then I give UP!!!!

Ok what I fail to understand on this Bey issue is,if she bought Irreplacable from NeYo then:

#1 Why would NeYo throw tantrums like that considering he had been writing songs for a long time even before he started singing yena, surely he knows the entire procedure of selling songs, credits etc

#2 Why would Beyonce only start announcing and thanking NeYo after the accusations for writing ‘such a wonderful song’ as she always puts it.

Please help me here,i am lost.

  65. Lela on Thu, 2nd Sep 2010 1:19 pm

Musicguru, the thing is they are frieds and losisi is more like a sister to him so they did the album and obviously he was still gonna register the song but nje he was just suprised that she would do that and she is not the first one. The thing is that even when the song is registered as his at SAMRO and we can chow from it there are other resons one would love to be credited on a song for,its more like marketing for a budding producer because when you make that hit people will want to know who did the song then you have more people coming to you and that means more money for you, qha umona mnintsi kule industry!

  66. badk93 on Thu, 2nd Sep 2010 1:23 pm

musicguru post the link 4 where keri said she wrote icebox alone coz keri is part of a writing click called ‘the clutch’ as we all myt already know so i find it hard to believe dat she said she wrote it alone coz as far as i knw, the song is credited to the clutch

*Waits for an answer to Kiki’s question.*

I think I like Zamani, I love a man who can stand up for him self.

now let me read all the comments!!!!!!!!

  69. Kiki on Thu, 2nd Sep 2010 1:34 pm

Zamani says….“This is my Benz! I manufactured and DESIGNED it, I painted it…Its my work. This Benz I created it from scratch.”

Kwaaaaa this just killed. Zamani I am now your groupie, you sound like an interesting character. *follows on twitter*

  70. Dladla on Thu, 2nd Sep 2010 1:35 pm

Yeah well, I think the issue that still stands here is that, the writer of this post did not do his bit of research before writing this. So then, where are the facts he is talking about.

Me too, I want to see’em facts. *folding arms and drinking Grape juice*

  71. Zamani on Thu, 2nd Sep 2010 1:35 pm

I wish I still had the link to Tricky and The Dream’s demo of “SINGLE LADIES” its almost IDENTICAL to the final recorded version, Just a few added sentences by Beyonce’ makes the difference between the demo and the original
But guess what… Its known as a song written by Beyonce.

I respect Bey for making sure that she has all Publishing Rights to her music, in her contracts.
But I dont understand why she has to call herself a “SONG-WRITER!” Thats my only problem.

Uphambene Dladla, what do you understand buy facts because this article on its own is based on facts. What research needs to be done here ngoba icacile nje lento kuthethwa noBeyone olitutu lengoma zabantu? 83. musicguru on Thu, 2nd Sep 2010 2:34 pm

    @KIKI
#1 Why would NeYo throw tantrums like that considering he had been writing songs for a long time even before he started singing yena, surely he knows the entire procedure of selling songs, credits etc (most artists will never say that I co wrote the song..its always about them, and whoever else they co wrote the song with, its up 2 them 2 get their own credits)
#2 Why would Beyonce only start announcing and thanking NeYo after the accusations for writing ‘such a wonderful song’ as she always puts it. Please help me here,i am lost. (I cannot tell you why she would do it after he complained, but I suppose NEYO phoned her and said “hey if you still want us to work together in the future, you need to rectify your statement” as things stand now, they are working on Beyonce’s new album..

  84. akaloza on Thu, 2nd Sep 2010 2:34 pm

silent bloger for the day………hellow my fellow JC family

  85. musicguru on Thu, 2nd Sep 2010 2:37 pm

@ZAMANI, Single Ladies.. and most other hit tracks.. producers will give a portion of the song shares 2 B (in this case 10%)because they know that if B records the song (how many albums does she sell? millions) that song will make them a whole lot more money than if it was recorded by Rihanna and they kept their 100% share of the song.. its business at the end of the day..and the fact that B gets credit only makes the song sell more hits, cos she is regarded as a hit maker.. make sense?

    Very intersting analysis Zamani.
But if Bee was 40somthing that means Kelly and others in those videos when they were little were just fabricated then. i disagree with you with age thing, she can never be 40 at all.

Okay i must say it is rather cute of you showing us somethign negative about the Queen who is worshipped for her song-writting everyday, madam is a thief, mhhhh
Damn she can steal hey, that’s why they say ‘dont hate the player hate the game’, the girl has made billions by just stealing, tjo i feel for these popel she rips off….

  89. musicguru on Thu, 2nd Sep 2010 2:44 pm

@BadK93 Keri said it in her myspace page a while back .. http://www.myspace.com/kerihilson
But its possible that its been changed now.. she had a list of all the tracks she had written..and co written, but on the page she appeared 2b the only writer, however as most would know she was part of the clutch..

    Kwakwakwa @ musicguru emailing already.siyamtolo@yahoo.com.
I don’t c any part where Zamani says B is 40. I thot twas a joke cos after that age part he said “jokes aside”. Those who took it serious, by “same age” he could’ve meant Ribs is 28 & not Bey 40

  104. JustSaying on Thu, 2nd Sep 2010 8:52 pm

So in all these comments all I heard was “Accusation! Accusation! Accusation!” Then there will be the obvious responsez, “Deny! Deny! Deny!” And then someone will take a stab at the jugular, “Master I got you!” and then of course…”Ha ha ha! APPEAL!!!” Then it all starts again! Its so amusing really!

  105. Lela on Thu, 2nd Sep 2010 11:58 pm
