GQ’s Best Dressed Honoured!

October 20, 2010 by

GQ magazine’s annual Best-Dressed Men of the Year Awards ceremony was held at The Westcliff in Joziburg.

The event attracted few pervertresses and fashion

loving males, you know the types that live (or at least pretend) to live la good life. As can be expected, well fitting tuxedos, expensive smelling Pour Hommo and some very intense dress styles were the order. But who am I to judge, style is relative after all.

This year the event was with a bit of a twist. It was fused with the launch of the magazine’s website and the Introduction of the new category, Best Dressed Woman.  Hayi kabi bafowethu…this new addition is unnecessary. I’m all for women empowerment and all, but women are already receiving enough recognition accordingly. Besides, it defeats the whole purpose and contradicts the awards. Why still call them the Best-Dressed Men of the Year Awards? As I always say, common sense is not that common.

Before we indulge in who turned up and who arrived with who…here is some housekeeping as per the press release.

Seth Rotherham, founder of 2oceansvibe blog and radio, has been named as South Africa’s best-dressed man by GQ magazine. His name heads a list of 50 ambassadors of style who appear in the November issue of GQ.

Bidvest Wits footballer Larry Cohen and Themba Mngomezulu, fashion designer and founder of Darkie, were listed at two and three. Completing the Top Ten were: head designer at NOTE Clothing and stylist Mokotjo Mohulo; model Shaun De Wet; TV and radio presenter Siyabonga Ngwekazi; Guy Ndlovu, reality show star and entrepreneur; banker Tyrone Arendse; Andrew McDade, marketing manager at adidas; and musician, Spoek Mathambo.

Congrats to all the winners although some guests were so quick to vocalize their disapproval about the criteria and winners. Guess it’s true, you can’t please everyone at the same time. Not even the civilized. Nonetheless, if you want to read more about them be sure to get yourself the November issue of GQ.

Now where was I?

Poppy Ntshongwana from 5fm   played the MC and did a great job. She looked stunning in a blue dress that worked for her skin tone…and while I might not be a style expert. I think she could have looked better perhaps in a different dress.  Sure, the number she opted for is a much safer option but it didn’t really do her hot bod much justice.

Poppy’s beau, DJ Milkshake, also showed up. Perhaps for moral support.

I had a moment with Noni Gasa…imagine you smile at someone trying to say hi and they look at unpleasantly and look /walk away? Shux, I have never felt so small.

But for the love of JC bloggers, I went outside, did a few breathing exercises and tried again. The second time around she was so graceful (like the lady she always looks like) ,we ended up talking for almost 20 minutes…from which I concluded that she is actually a pleasant person ,when she wants, just misunderstood sometimes.

Upcoming movers and shakers, Boity and Khanya Mkhangisa were also there.

In case you are wondering what Khanya is doing with her life, don’t worry she is not down and out. The AFDA graduate has since ditched the small screen for a nine-to-five. She works for Glamour Magazine (if I’m not mistaken) as the fashion assistant and loves every minute of it.

What would any top-notch event be without the Booths?  Hair extensions or phalula, Sonia still looks good. Only a very few people can pull that off. It helps to have great natural looks because had it been a different person wearing that metallic or silver floor length dress, comrades would have called the security to remove her.

The dress is a waste of a good body, labour and material.

Mika Stefano scorched up in an assemble of black and gold. Keep dressing like that and the MeanGirls might JUST call off the meeting with the gas chambers for the alleged crimes on fashion.

JC readers and supporters, MQ and Menzi were also there and insisted I take their picture…I only agreed because they have killer personalities.

Presley Chweneyagae also showed face. Wow where have you been chief?

Terry Pheto was also there. Say what you want about her personality (or lack thereof as some have said before)…but she is nothing less of a refined lady.

*Scoop*: Nthabi Mphahlele (or Meiki in Muvhango) and Dennis Tau are an item. I can already see cute babies if there are to be any.

Here are some of the people that cracked the invite…

Idols judge, Randall Abrahams

Poppy and Pabi Moloi

Siyabonga Ngwekazi and his date

Zizo Beda and friend

Ndiyamthanda that Themba…hot dark chocolate…but I’m not his type. Apparently he goes for the beckys. Actually the European ones. You know how they love our African brothers. And the darker the better for them.

Everybody looked good. Most of my black people clean up nicely shame.

    Noni is beautiful and stunning.

Why does it look like Sonia is channeling Grace Jones with that look. Cha shame, awusoze wamthinta u Ms Jones weSonia. She’s a style icon of note. Ask Lady Gaga and Riri.

I have an issue with this year’s winner. Seth? Really? What happened to Ole? Ole Ledimo should’ve won and he’s NOT even in the Top 10! I don’t care that he came second last year (he still should’ve won last year)he should’ve atleast featured in the frkn Top 10!
I’m happy for Guy Ndlovu! He takes the art of being bespoke serious and always looks dapper.
I blogged about my expectations on my blog on Tuesday and I was gutted when neither of my choices made it to Top Ten.

I’m happy for Sya Ngwekazi. He has this red trench coat that I am still trying to find in stores. he wore it to some party in June and I liked it.

Booth. If Seth can win, then WTF? How can Booth NOT make the Top 10? I don’t care if Seth wears an Armani suit and a belt he got from DJ what what in LDN or if he wears a seven year old pair of GH Bass loafers1 Good for him, but he is NOT the best dressed man in SA. Seriously I am not impressed with Craig Tyson and co. for this.

Poppy looked great, but that neckpiece was a tad overkill. She should’ve left her neck bare and got a hair accessory. that would’ve made her look so much better.

    As for Sonia…
Noni is gorgeous and I DO like her aloofness! She can afford to be a snob. #justsaying. But she is a nice person. Her sister…

Boity sisi umuhle! This girl is gonna go far and some cosmetics company should make her their spokesmodel ASAP to capitalize on her exquisite beauty.

Sorry for the blog within a blog.

    Nice Job Hastingz

  27. fruitcake on Thu, 21st Oct 2010 9:21 am

bandla u Noni Gasa & Sonia Booth look so wrong. Sonia that ugly dress & the shoes are wrong for that outfit as well. wont even start with Noni, i blame the person who saw her leaving the house like that. i guess their wack outfits complement their personalities.

Maybe its because I never see some of these guys on a regular…especially the okes on the list who are from cape town…but in all honesty, this years list was not up to standard…the name is Gentlemans Quartely…some of the men in this list dont hold up to those values.

p.s being horrible is hard work Hastings lol…thanks bud.

  46. lejazz on Thu, 21st Oct 2010 3:18 pm

It’s very strange that Minnie was wearing a similar dress to that of Poppy the night LIVE was re launched and people carried on and on about how cheap that dress is at China City but not a damn word about Ms Poppy’s which to me looks exactly like Minnie’s just a different colour. *confused look*

  50. LG on Thu, 21st Oct 2010 11:12 pm

Ivy uchan’ ucwethe ngetolo. I thot I was the only 1 who noticed Poppy’s dress, Minni’s was a silverish color. Mna I dont like the dress on both ladies

  51. Missbee on Fri, 22nd Oct 2010 7:08 am

I am shocked at Sonia Booth’s outfit- maybe if she lost the ‘mbhinqo’/belt thing & wore nice stilletos it would be atleast decent-ish..I love Pabo Moloi, but lately she always has the same ‘pouty pouty’ expression.. (*.*)

  52. Cheeky on Fri, 22nd Oct 2010 8:52 am

  55. Bootylicious on Tue, 26th Oct 2010 6:11 am

Noni is beautiful but truth be told that dress she is wearing is damn ugly especially in the front where it looks like it was soaked in petrol and the belt I am just not getting. Ijakga
