Speedy Sends Hate Mail

As you guys, know, every Saturday morning at 10:20, Just Curious is on Metro FM with Ismail Abrahams. Now here’s a comment I made on the show last Saturday.

“I’m still recovering from the shock of hearing that Speedy is nominated under Best Styled Artist (MetroFM Awards). If there was a category for Best Styled By Association then I would understand coz he’d be nominated coz of his association with Stoan but his name should not be on that list.”

It turns out Speedy was listening at the time because he immediately sent this message to a friend of mine.

After reading this, I had to come to JC to search for anything that I could have said to make this man believe I don’t respect him because I refuse to believe that my mere opinion on awards nominations could fuel such anger. Here are the only two things I found…

February 2010: In THIS post:

I teased Speedy about his towel and asked him to put it to good use by carrying me on his back with it. I thought I was being funny but clearly NOT.

6 months later, Speedy was at the SABC 1 Reloaded Party and this pic was taken. When writing the post, my caption for the picture was

“Let us take a moment of a silence for the dearly departed TOWEL”

After reading his Facebook message, it is clear that the “towel” is a bit of a sensitive issue to him so I apologise for making it a laughing matter. I don’t see what’s disrespectful about saying I don’t agree with an awards nomination and that I will not apologise for.

My comment was not about his talent, neither did I attack him as a person. If I were to give Speedy a message, I would tell him that he’s talented, is one of the few blessed artists in SA and therefore should continue to do his work as beautifully as he does it and only worry when people complain about his music, not his clothes. If his music is on point, who cares whether or not I think he’s stylish?

I don’t think there was any need for all the profanity in his message, but I guess now I know what kind of overly sensitive soul he is and whether he’s apologetic or not, I forgive him for calling me names.

I can’t help but wonder if the Sunday World writers were also sent letters calling them“MotherF*ckers” for the above quotes.

Mxim Speedy wakhona looks like an up and coming Nigerian hip hop artist. he must relax, we won’t all like the way he dresses. can he pls just grow up and stop with this name calling issue. Since Brown Shuga dissed his nomination on national radio, can he also retaliate in the public eye & stop calling her names behind her back or at least send her the msg 2 her, telling her that he’s had enough of her criticism. Sizokhathala ilama-diva shame!!!! vele vele what’s Speedy’s relevance in this day & age —-> Yawn!!!

As much as we are saying that Speedy should be strong and what what, I also say that South Africans writers, whether in the entertainment industry, political or what should never take these kinds of responses personally. Yes BS has feelings and no one should insult her like that but we must also realise that these celebrities also have feelings. Yes we write whatever we want about them because they chose to be in the public eye but when they retaliate, we (I am a journalist too, but not in entertainment) should also just expect that and move on with our lives. At the end of the day, BS should be flattered that Speedy responded to what she said on radio and Speedy should also be glad that he was mentioned by BS on the radio and on her website. At the end of the day most people will be listening to BS on Metro and also going to her website because of what Speedy wrote and Speedy will start being on everyone’s lips today, tomorrow and many days to come. This is how the industry works people and maybe we can take a leaf from how the oorkant ones do it. They capitalise on whatever little platform they get. So, let us all calm down because in the end it will all work out well for both BS and Speedy in term of popularity and many more people visiting this website. But that does not mean I agree with Speedy’s use of profanity, it is too crass and crude. He could have voiced his displeasure well without using profanity. But you know what Chris Rock said: You can’t be fighting with someone and be politically correct at the same time. Be strong BS and keep doing the good work you do. This website rocks!!!!!

Which is what people had already questioned on Twitter the day the nominations were announced. @Pinana read the article again. The message did not come from his friends. The way I read and understood it, it’s like Speedy asked BS’s friend to pass on that message to BS. Why didn’t he address his issues directly with BS instead of asking a friend to tell a friend she is a MOTHERFUCKER?

@MissAN,I have been following this blog for as long as I can remember. Yes I was not a regular commenter but I visited JC almost everyday. The main thing that has stood out for me is that there are 3-4 Individuals (that is if it’s not one person with different names) who never have anything nice or positive to say about BS and JC Bloggers. They are ALWAYS waiting to attack her and as I see it,it’s the same Individuals. So just like BS has haters Speedy has haters too.

@ Ivy… the guy has feelings to,we all human… I would be upset if someone says I belong in the best styled by association..maybe speedy is no friends with BS on fb…so lets call a truce, the same way people used to trash Bonang,I realised most people were just plain jelous and now that they friends with her,they only have good things to say or defend her.

MissAN,unlike Twitter a person can still send another a direct message even if they are not friends on FB. Speedy should have gone to YFM then and responded to BS’s comments,MAYBE it would have been better that way. I don’t have a problem with that he responded,it’s the way he went about it and also the insults on the message. Couldn’t he respond like a man because BS didn’t call him names on radio?

Lady Gaga, I understand your comment very well. Its always easy for people to hide behind names just to state their opinions. Why they do that? beats me. For all you know the same people that are always dissing BS follow her on Twitter acting all friendly just to gather information but then come to her site and throw it right back at her.

That’s the problem and sad reality of most JC bloggers. Should one person dare to disagree with what is being said here, then oh unto them.
They (most bloggers) will start labelling you as a groupie or better yet, as the actual person that they’re trashing.

Funny how the very same bloggers always contradict themselves. one moment it’s wrong to belittle people (celebrities) as they’re also humans, case in point Connie Ferguson, Carol and Buyile Mdladla saga.

And then the next day they will attack a celeb just for the fun of it and when someone tries to intervene then you get told that the person should not be in the pubic eye (celebrity) if they cant handle criticism.

I’m not a Speedy fan but most of us can agree that he can sing.

I have no issues against BS and JC as I’m a registered blogger and have been a fan of BS since her TVSA days (when I first came across her writing)

I also like JC as it’s very informative, with up to the minute “reports”.

However, I somehow (I OBVIOUSLY MIGHT BE WRONG AS I DONT KNOW B.S PERSONALLY) but I feel something has changed.

I dont know how to put it or maybe it’s because I dont understand how the entertainment world works, but I think she often puts herself in situations that she, as the writer of most articles and the boss lady of this site should not put herself in.

Yes, it’s all good and well to write gossip and celeb stories with the occasionally constractive critism.

But it just doesnt sit well with me when you (B.S) start picking sides about people that you write about.

e.g during the Carol, Buyile Mdladla and Connie Ferguson fiasco BS was team Connie and there was another article about model Joelle Kayembe having an abortion when she was 13 weeks pregnant.
If memory serves me correctly, BS was also team Joelle.

As I said early I might not have an understanding of how entertainment journalism works, but I’m under the impression that a writer should do just that..write and leave the reaction and bickering up to the readers.

This is by no way an attack on B.S because as I stated early I like her writing. This is just me saying what I have observed, which will obviously not be the same with other people.

I know many people will be tempted to answer on behalf of B.S but I beg, if she would be willing, I would like her to reply.

My understanding is BS who has a slot to do gossip/entertainment on Metro commented on Speedy being nominated as Best Styled,nhe? Did BS did anything wrong by questioning something that everybody questions (while on the job/in the right capacity nogal). Then Speedy called BS names for something she said as BS from JC doig a slot on Metro. Bese uBS comes and posts it here which is where it all started because the nominations were posted here,right and BS is on Metro as JC right?
