The “BOOK” Review
November 17, 2010 by MaBlerh
I grew up reading the Bible as it was all the advice my mother could give me about life. I was brought up in the name of Jesus Christ. It is all my mother had to offer me in terms of guidance and discipline. I was also fortunate enough to belong to the most radical of Christian denominations, the born-again Christians. This is one denomination that is not afraid to speak up as to what is acceptable in the eyes of the Lord. They strongly believe that the only way to guarantee you a spot in heaven is through Jesus Christ, loosely translated Muslims, Jews, Hindus, etc are all going to hell.

I was an avid believer of this until life threw me a curve ball. My life has just recently had a movie mimicing it, District 9. You grew up believing in something passionately until you wake up to find yourself on the other side of the fence. I woke up belonging to the sexual orientations that Christians regard more sinful than murder and incest. I was an avid church boy that was highly active in church. My life was school and church. I did not use profanity in my speech. I did not drink. I used to pray everyday for God to get rid of this evil spirit that had posessed my life. My grandmother died praying and propheting that one day I will end up being a Reverend.
To cut a long story short, God did not get rid of this evil spirit that made me want to do to men what I was meant to do to women. This changed the direction and focus. It made me read the Bible analytically as my lifestyle was enemy number one. I have heard a lot of sermons by many different priests and pastors; there is nothing that gets them worked up than the idea of a man sleeping with a man or a woman sleeping with a woman. If they were allowed to vomit on the pulpit whilst preaching, the would do it whilst on this topic. In me reading the Bible, I picked up a lot of things that just did not add up.
I had grown up being told that God is love but the God advocated by the Bible was a mean, angry, petty and irrational individual with Hitler’s thirst for power and control. He hated incest and yet he started the world by creating only two people from the same gene pool and allowing them to breed. He later drowns everyone and saves one family (Noah) and allowing them to further breed. The picture of God painted by the Bible has him showing love by sending his son on Earth to be brutally murdered in the most gruesome way. He, God, does this to avoid destroying the world again.

Around this time Judas is set-up to be the victim of this entire prophecy. God is painted as this twisted individual that asks an elderly man (Abraham) to take his only
son to a mountain to crucify him as an offering to him, as a test of his faith and loyalty. Just for fun, God drowns the Egyptian army as the Israelites escape Egypt. Wait, God then makes the Israelites walk a 100km radius for 40 years in search of the promise land. Moses gets upset once after years of loyalty and obedience and he gets the punishment of not seeing the land that he was born to lead the people to. Lot sleeps with two of his daughters and pulls a Jamie Foxx (blame it on the alcohol) yet his wife gets the ultimate punishment as she turns to watch her house burning down. What kind of loving man thinks up things like drowning the world, turning woman into a pillar of salt, thinks of the horrific things on revelations, conceptualises burning his disobedient children in sulphur for eternity and thinks of the most painful way of killing his only son?
If you read the Bible you can easily pick up that it was written by heterosexual males with the desire to control society. Look at how the Bible justifies going through pain and turmoil in order live a good life, this is merely to comfort poor people so that they do not revolt against the unjust governments. The role of a woman is for her to be a glorified servant and sex slave to the man that she marries. Women were not allowed to preach the word of God. These men created an image of God that is a typical heterosexual male drunk with power.

The image of God would be very different if the Bible was compiled by a bunch of women. Read the book of Ruth and see how she views God. I have no doubt that the Bible was inspired by God but we all cannot ignore the human element in it that has allowed wars and hate crimes to be justified. This book gives people the right to hate and condemn someone to hell because of his/her sexual preference.
The very same book has been used to justify hanging and lynching Black people. It was used to justify apartheid. It was used to occupy countries in a parasitic manner and mistreat natives of those countries. This book has clauses that stipulate that it is not to be questioned because the compilers were aware of the flaws in it.
Hardcore Christians that will read this article will dismiss it as drivel inspired by Lucifer as the Bible has warned them about false prophets that will come in the end of days not withstanding the fact that it has been the end of days since the plague, influenza and TB. Now Aids is the new sign after Cancer. Word war 1 was the ending and Hitler was the anti-Christ, that was more than 70 years ago.
I strongly believe that there is a God out there that is love. A God that loves his children regardles of race, tribe and sexual orientation. A God of tolerance and acceptance. One day I hope all Christians get to know him.

Lol like i said on twitter, this made the bible seem like an episode of Hannah Montana

Mablerh is gay? WOW! Now it all makes sense. But that’s besides the point.
What I want to say rather is that I get your point of view. This is a very thorny subject and people have different perceptions and interpretations of the Bible and its teachings. I’ll just sit here and watch how it plays out.
Religious subjects are always controversial, so be ready Mablerh. God bless your heart.

Eish. I totally get what the writer was saying… The Book has caused so much turmoil by people who only use it to justify their own agendas. Growing up as a Catholic came natural to me. Both my parents are Catholic so the environment has always been constant. Things started to changbe though as I grew and this year I’ve went to church only once and don’t c me there any time soon.
Conflicting views are to blame but I don’t think I really need to justify myself. I always let people be but it seems like returning the favour costs a million bucks. I’m kinda sleepy so I may have digressed but daybreak is near. Eish…

One of the reasons I no longer pay attention to The Book is becaused it was compiled by humans… So interpretation is actually relative. Don’t read between the lines.

WoW… Very controversial!
Sadly, when it comes to religion people aren’t able to debate objectively so I see a lot of personal attacks.

Mablerh this is a very brave article for this platform, lots of personal attacks will come your way but what you’ve written here is the truth in your life. I choose to remain neutral and un-affected when it comes to religion, in life I have learned that those who preached the loudest have the darkest hearts. There are people who go to church every sunday, staunchly religious but I believe my heart is kinder and lighter than theirs. This is my personal opinion as all our views on religion/christianity should be.

Wow what a touching article. Your relationship with God is the only thing that matters here. The Christian community is known for their judgmental tendencies (myself included). We never want to deal with things and always see fault in other people other than ourselves. All I am going to say is that God loves everyone including you no matter what sexuality; the only opinion that should matter is that of God. Good luck with everything and hope you find peace with who God created you to be.?

Hopefully those who are silent blogging will stay there and dont come and preach when the debate is hot.
Mablerh…nice article, though it will end up as an atheist vs theist topic, or poeple will run away from it.
i believe God is love like you and he loves us eqaully whther we have all fauts mentioned by a man that written the Bible. Catholics etc have distorted teh message of God to tehir own advantage, tehy made sure evry written thing in the Bible will be what suits their needs or lifestyles.
let me get to the point,
stories like; Sodom and Gomorarh i dont think they ever happened, tehy were just created to scare gay/lesbian humans in my view..
1. Why God will burn his own creation and not let them repent as the Bible states that for you to be cleansed you have to repent from your ‘sins’ and God will forgive you. Why destroy and not have patience like the rest of other sinners.
2. Do you know we have animals that sleep with the same sex(forgot the link), if this sleeping with the same sex is also from animals this could only mean ‘gay” life is not somethign that was just made up by humans, it is part of every breathing living thing in this life, God created it.
3. The same Bible says woman/man must be killed by being thrown stones at when they have slept around. Which today still happens in some countries.
With these 3 examples and more from my own research about the authenticty of the Bible, you can’t deny this was just a human distortion, humans who had power then & made sure they will rule our thinking until today, the God who i grew up loving and worshipping will never ver give up on it’s own creation, He will let people live their lives and guide each and every one of them.
And whichever journey you take, it is never ever a mistake, it is God’s will.
I am one of the poeple who never believed the is such a thing as natural gay human, actually i hated gays with passion, but when i think back in my childhood i had a friend who used to love playing with girls, and doing girls stuff more than playing with us, we would tease him and we even changed his name from Mawethu to Nomawethu.
Mind you were very young then, when i met him 20yrs later and he told me he was gay, he opened my eyes that gaysim is not something you choose , it is something most people were born with.
sorry for a blog within a blog..

I don’t have a lot of experience with the Bible. Like most people I have favourite verses. Those that speak to me when I need comfort or guidance.
It would be foolish of anyone to say that everything contained in the Bible should be applied to a diverse society such as it exists worldwide. Why are there two testaments?
Because the bible is written by ‘man’, it is very possible that there are many errors contained in it. And y can’t there be additions to it? It has been used to control people through instilling fear but it has also taught me good life lessons. I sin a lot more that I should but it’s good to know that I can feel better by praying for forgiveness.
The concept of having a father that has ever lasting love (see how I choose to see him?) has made it easy for me to spill out all those emotions I would otherwise have bottled up. He is my counsellor in the true sense of the word. I speak to Him and I find solutions. Sometimes I pray for a sign that doesn’t come but that’s no biggie.
I doubt that in the age the bible was written, there would be a chapter dedicated to the righteous homosexuals because homosexuality was frowned upon.
It happened just like incest, prostitution and murder. There isn’t a single book that says those things are right in the eyes of the Lord.
If the bible had to be re-written byt progressive thinkers I know a lot of books would be sent to eternal damnation.
I love the feeling of knowing that there is someone that loves me and does not judge me and is forgiving. Therein lies my comfort.

Interesting read I must say – do I agree with you – angikho sure but what I can say is that the God of yesterday, is still the God of today and will be the God of tomorrow. Times may change but the God that I serve will never change.
I believe in God and take Jesus as my personal saviour, and also believe that EVERYTHING written in the BOOK was inspired by GOD. I also believe in the end of days, yes, I grew up knowing this, my great grandparents were also told of this, and inspite of all you have raised, I HAVE FAITH.
FunkyFK on Wed, 17th Nov 2010 8:49 am
Oh 1 more thing, the BOOK is not easy to understand, you can read it every day but still not understand, hence it is adviseable to invite the HOLY SPIRIT to help you through. the HS will intepret it the way it was intended in the beginning.

Another thing, have you guys noticed that generally, people do not have an issue with God but with the opinions about him that are compiled in the Bible.
Saying something is inspired by God is very dangerous. Suicide bombers also claim to be inspired by God. #JustSaying.
Luluwise on Wed, 17th Nov 2010 9:11 am
I choose to see God as a parent, because he is not a physical parent, His word is there to guide, teach and show us the correct path, just like our earthly parents. He punishes us when we stray, and rewards good behaviour. I believe that some things contained within the bible are extreme and could have been included or perhaps exaggerated by early Christians to instil order, to make the world governable and of course to push the agenda of Catholics at the time. However there are excerpts that neutralise this especially in the New Testament, especially Paul’s letters or epistles, I tend to focus more on reading these as they comfort and guide me. Ultimately, FAITH, HOPE and LOVE are my guiding principles. the Bible is about interpretation and can be used to justify anything good or bad, depending largely on your outlook in life.

All I can really say about this is perfectly captured in the very first sentence of the post. The author GREW UP reading the Bible.
That means that he did not read the Bible anymore by the time he was a mature adult with a sound mind that comprehends, calculates and draws logical conclusions. Everything he therefore writes about is what he remembers from his childhood days of reading Bible.
He also doesn’t in any way assert or confirm that he THEN understood what he read, or that he actually understands what he read then – NOW.
So with that frame of reference I am going to make the assumption that everything that was written by the author was done without real understanding.
That’s all.
Maratahelele on Wed, 17th Nov 2010 11:32 am

Nice article as always!
Ok I’m one of those people who respect the bible, always had, always will. I take it as it is, yes sometimes it states what we don’t want to hear, which is the truth. If you read the old testament, you will get an understanding that it just outlines what happened then, it gives us a brief history. But the new testament is the main bible that speaks to us, if you read Revelations you will see that all the things that were said to happen, are really happening. Revelations reveal things that will happen in the near future and yes just read it, you will see how true this is.
So it depends on a certain individual as to how you accept what is written there.

LOL @Manny I’m a BhakaBhaka for life…
Ok guys like I said, our ways of understanding the bible differ and I respect that!
Lemme share with you some scripture on Chapter 22 in the Book of Revelations (I sound like a priest lmao)
11. He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
12. And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
13. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
14. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
15. I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
16. And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
17. For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book.
Now you see that the verse is stating that if people don’t follow the commandments we end up having thieves, rapists, hoes etc (read number 13-14). That is what the world has turned into, a world of confusion, people don’t know who to believe and what to believe. But what this chapter is stating is that if you believe in what the bible says, then you will see his Kingdom. Check number 12, God rewards according to how you have fulfilled his wishes. Have u noticed how people are dying these days? There are lot of disease that are discovered every now and then. There is a high rate of rape and murder, why? Because people have chosen to escape from the word of God and do as they please.
I’m not good when it comes to analyzing the Bible, but if you read these verses I’ve shared with understanding, you will get my point.
Lustagp on Wed, 17th Nov 2010 1:44 pm
let me reserve my comment for now as i am a bit busy, I was waiting for Bible verses the whole day. hehehehe

@Bruised Ego, from the begining of time, there were rapists and murderers. At some point, the flu, was an untreatable virus that claimed the lives of many people. The verses that you qouted are proof of what is in my article about controlling society. They are threats about what might happen if people are not Christian.
Ask yourself this, honestly, “how many people would be religious if you remove the HELL element in the Bible?” Religion is sold as something that requires “free will” but common sense dictates that it is not “free will” if there is a punishment at the end for those who choose not to comply.
Basically, a 2 sentence summary of the message in the Bible is: FOLLOW WHAT THIS BOOK SAYS IS RIGHT OTHERWISE YOUR SOUL WILL ENDURE ABUSE FROM LUCIFER FOR ETERNITY. IT’S YOUR CHOICE, NO PRESSURE.

Aowa MaBlerh, ke a gana.
Hell can be interpreted to mean eternal fire or a life with no meaning. the reason we have jails/courts/the justice system is exactly the same reason we have the 10 commandments (yes i will take it there).
i’ll agree that most Christians probably joined the faith for fear of the unknown…the what if factor…the reason we take insurance on our homes/cars but that doesn’t mean we’re all cowering in fear of sinning lest rotted bodies and bones are cast in fire.
as an “occassional-christian” I don’t feel I have to comply with anything. I don’t tithe, I don’t follow all 10 commandments, I miss church most days, I drink and get drunk but at the end of the day it’s what my heart’s made of that determines whether i’m good or not….not what the bible prescribes.
shame, I could roll a joint using the first page of Genesis and I would not expect to be hit by lightning because I pissed off God.
At the end of the day, people cannot and will not have the same relationship with the bible just as they wont have the same relationship with God. We take what we will out of the bible. You choose to believe it’s the stick, I choose to believe it’s the carrot.
kayRabs on Wed, 17th Nov 2010 3:06 pm
pretty deep mablerh or should I say Macbeth, lol
Bruised Ego on Wed, 17th Nov 2010 3:14 pm
Ok Mablerh you say that the it would have been better if women wrote the bible. But how? Men were dominating and still are. God created Adam then Eve, not the other way around, so that’s how this gender division started.
People are not religious only because of the fear of going to hell, but some are christians because it works for them… Fasting and Praying works for those who believe in God, while Sangomas and Nyanga work for those who believe in such. To each this own.
There’s this verse that says in Zulu (not exact, but something like this) ‘Izono zenu (abazali) ziyowela kubantwana benu’ to translate it in English ‘children will have to carry the sins of their parents’
So whatever sin that is happening is the continuation of sins by ancient people from the bible. The spirit of Jezebel that is mentioned on the bible is what we see nowadays. But the only difference is that everything is severe or extreme, unlike before. Jesus saved lot of lives, can doctors save lives these days?? like how god helped a blind man to see, a woman who was bleeding to stop the blood and helped the man who couldn’t walk to walk? That’s the question…But some pastors like Pastor Chris are gifted and can do that.

Hey Batho – difficult and emotional subject
MaBlerh – cCan I say I enjoy your blog posts and replies, but today I feel that you are taking things a bit personal (difficult granted seeing as the topic is close to your heart) but can the old Mablerh return? lol
I just want for us to clarify a few things – all Judea-Christian religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam) believe that their God and religion is the true religion and all others will go to hell (effectively) not just Christians.
However as a friend of mine said – hate the sin NOT the sinner and let God be the ultimate judge. We all sin tlhe batho, and no sin is greater than the next (according to the bible).

@Sslave, please sit down with your misguided prayer.
@Bruised Ego, I did not say it would be better if women wrote the Bible, I said it would be different. Let’s not twist each others words. The domination of men in the Bible reminds me of how White people dominate over the Earth whilst they are a minority. Now lets see how that came about… Yes, they used the Bible to colonise other races and abuse them. The Bible is full of bigotry. The only reason why Black people can now be Christians is due to the “fact” that Gods “chosen” children (Jews) denounced Christ. Yes, that is in the Bible. The reason men rule over women is due to the restrictions that the Bible has over women. Part and parcel of the reason why God is a “he”. The men that wrote the Bible were not about to make the almighty ruler of the world, a woman. According to the Bible women are just well kept servants that are only meant to speak when spoken to.
My article serves to highlight the fact that the Bible is an opinion of who God is by man. All the laws in it were based on the issues that the kingdom of God faced at that time. I understand why the book exist which is to be a measure of control for society and people would go crazy without it. The book is a reference for morality and good. I think thats were it ends. God is within each and everyone of us. Everybody should just formulate their own personal relationship with God and not try and copy the relationship that Paul, Matthew, John and Moses had with God. We say he is our father who art in heaven. We do not have a uniform relationship with our parent as our siblings, why are we doing it with God?

Great read Mablerh. Mina I think man’s relationship with religion is about as real as that of a child and Santa Claus. I believe in God, but religion is a bitter pill to swallow. It has far too many inconsistencies and does not make any sense to me all.
As for hell….I so do not believe in that, soooo I guess that automatically eliminates heaven too. I believe that this life is trully the only heaven there is and people should stop living for a fruitcake in the sky.

But a few laters I’ve decided to read on and this is my take on the subject.
1. I dont go to church anymore because I feel a lot of people including priets are misrepresenting what my God is all about.
2. the God that has loved me is accepting and not judging like all these people who claim to be christians.
i’ve never liked any opinions about the bible as i strongly disagreed with what was said until now. Amen to everything you’ve said mr author! and dont worry: i’m not kissing *ss.
all i know now is that i will continue to read my bible and intepret it in the way that i understand and therefore believe as i know my loving God just appreciates the fact that I appreciate and ackowledge his presence in my life.
Nice one Mr. Author!

Yes! This is exactly the same thing I said earlier, the Bible is what it is, its up to you how you interpret what you’ve read. This discussion can take a decade, and challenges in life sometimes lead us astray, confusion and all.

I may have missed the point completely, so I stand to be corrected. So are u guys (#TeamMablerh) saying that the Bible isn’t accommodating to sin? That it should’ve been written in a manner that accepts gay people as Christians?!

The point is form your own relationship with God. everyone interprets the bible in their own way, even the priests.

Mablerh never say something is fact unless you are 100% sure you said “The only reason why Black people can now be Christians is due to the “fact” that Gods “chosen” children (Jews) denounced Christ”
I’m assuming you are implying that had Christ not been denounced by the Jews all blacks would go to “hell”. I can assure you there are black Jews – Ethiopia has had Jews for centuries some now (because of their Jewish belief) have been allowed to relocate to Israel to form the Jewish state.
I am not a Bible expect but I do know that Jesus was a Jew, and he was not called “Jesus”. He also came to save those who believed in him and his father (everyone because peopled had sinned too much to enter Heaven, even his “chosen ones”) – I do not want to write a sermon but basically what I’m saying is the Bible is a VERY difficult book to read/ understand, in addition there are several books missing from todays Bible and translations have watered down meanings to the point where the book now feels (to some) pro-men/anti-women.

@Mablerh i have no more words you have summed up everything perfectly though I for one dont even believe in this bible book but i must admit you on point.
Let me just ask and diss(as Christians believe it’s a diss not to beleive in their religion)
what is a sin? when saying we all sinners what do you mean manny?
@faya the truth is within you, nowhere else will you find it, find yourself first then seek for the truth without opinions from other sources..
As for the qoutations from the bible, the prayers due to us, the fake toungue speakers, you lot get real please you so brainwashed you cant help it.
What i know and belive is heaven is no location it is just a inner state within you, seek for you awakening and you will be the next Jesus though you wont be crucified ke wena.
Jesus was just a normal human being with a very rare awakened state of mind and shame he was misunderstood by his fellow people, he was no different or better than anyone else, and NO he is not coming back, he is dead like Tupac is.
Imagine Kiki writting a book about Tupac today and the next generations to come believe in it and live in hope that Tupac one day will come back to life , to cleanse their sins hhehheheh
Everything that is happening in this world was meant to be, no one, no bible or prayers from imperfect humans like me are going to give directions on how to behave right or wrong in this lifetime period.

@Faya,
The Bible is written by man,
and i think there are lots of things that they did not understand at that time?
the Bible also says that eating Prawns and pork are a sin,
where it was actually a health risk at that time.
there are many examples of this in the Bible!
So that is why i take the Bible as a guideline,
there are also the old testament that we are not using anymore.
and also the Book of Enoch which has been removed by man.
i feel that man has tampered to much with the Bible in the past few hundred years.

Sjoe, this is a hard one, I come from a family where we all attend church and we are guided to do right things. My parents were not born again Christians but for personal reasons I chose for God to be my first love and consultant before any other because He works very closely with my conscience.
This article raises questions that I had never allowed my self to ask or to be really concerned about because my God knows best and therefore he acts best.
I am sure this article wont move my beliefs but it will sure linger alot of questions at the back of my mind.
One thing though that has gotten me through thicks of situations is that DOUBT IS THE ENEMY OF FAITH. The moment we start doubting His action and motives about us is the moment we drift away from him.
Stories in the bible may seem far fetched at times but I doubt very much that they were made up.
MissAN on Thu, 18th Nov 2010 12:28 pm
@ Mabler interesting article..as someone did mention it is ur own personal or who wrote the bible, I think the main problem with the bible is people rely tooo much on what the spiritual leader or pastor says and how s/he interprets things,as far as I am concerned the Bible is really flawed because humans in general always need something whether it is culture, tradition or even the bible to back some evil law or rule,so as far as I am concerned the Bible is the Thruth for me and I make an effort to read and understand and not merely quote verses to suit an opinion as most pastors do and not read under which context that thing was done or said…as far as I am concerned God gives us choice and never forces anything on us,but the laws and rules that he gives us,actually do lead to our own disadvantage or even death..God loves us all, gay, black, white,Pakistani, etc and as far as I am concerned,He will always look at a persons heart and intetions than what may be visible on the surface…something are just too much for the human mind to comprehend or even understand and I have made peace with that!!!

So Lusta are you saying that we Christians must NOT defend our belief system? But isn’t a blog about us engaging and in end learning about something and have an understanding? Please clarify for me.
Lehakoe on Thu, 18th Nov 2010 4:20 pm
Like really people? Really?? Can you seriously say that not once have you ever doubted the bible?? Shybear, if you haven’t noticed it is not just gay people who are not for the bible in this blog. I can bet my ten cents worth that 98%(if not 100%) of you Christians here have had sex before marriage. Guess what…..You’re going to hell too!!!! You are an abomination of your own religion and how dare you think God favours you for repentence because you are Christian and live by a book written by man. Puh-lease!

If ure a Christian good 4 u, if ure an Atheist good 4 u. havent been 2 church in ages but God is my rock, i dont fully understand the bible but i do know that Jesus loves me unconditionally and thats all there is 2 it, its my experience. at the end of the day, its what you believe in that counts and what works 4 u, not anyone else. i took this article 4 what it is 2 me: Mablerh using a platform that works 4 him to voice his opinion and dissatisfaction with the bible because of what it says about his sexual orientation. perhaps we should all voice our opinion with an open mind instead of trying to change peoples perceptions about their God or praying 4 the non believers. an atheist will not influence me 2 see God differently or decrease my faith in him just like i could never try 2 convert an atheist because no belief system is superior 2 another, do u.

I can go on and on about this subject!
here is something i don’t understand,
as i am very open minded, i do think about these things!
There are the paradoxes, the apparent contradictions, the strange twists and turns of first one thing, and then, curiously, the seemingly opposite. Consider one the most obvious:
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…” “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” — Genesis 1: 26-27 [emphasis added]
Why the plural tense? Are we talking about the “royal we”? If so, then why was the proposal to make man in the plural tense, but the actual act, in the singular? Basically, we must ask, “What do you mean, “we”,? All of which is also applicable to:
“And the Lord God said, Behold the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever;” — Genesis 3: 22 [emphasis added]
Become one of us, become a God? Man? Eat of the Tree of Life and live forever? It might be justifiable as punishment to send Man packing, but why bring up the tree of life thing? Obviously the tree’s fruit was an eye opener for the naked couple, but…?
“And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, [and presumably to do long division as well] and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.” — Genesis 6: 1-2
I can appreciate the daughters being fair, but “the sons of God” is not at all clear — at least in the context of there being only one god. But if there were two or more… Then the “us” is clear, even if only one “he” was the final version of created man. And if more than two, why not have sons of God? (And presumably daughters?) A pantheon!
Biblical Scholars, including the Jesuits of the Catholic Church, have reluctantly had to admit that there must have been at least two gods in the story of Genesis.
Secret Agent Squirrel on Fri, 19th Nov 2010 12:52 pm
i also find this very interesting,
Obviously, much of the early chapters in Genesis are perplexing in their interpretation. If one ignores the two creation of man stories — Genesis 1:27 (the image thing) and Genesis 2:7 (the dust one) — you’ve still got a lot of reversals and inconsistencies. For example:
God placed Man in the Garden of Eden — then threw him out. In the process, He blessed Man (Genesis 1:28), and then cursed him (Genesis 3:17-19), as in:
“…cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken; for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.”
On the other hand…
“Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.” Genesis 3:21
Just as God show Adam and Eve the door, He gives them a door prize!?
He cursed Cain…
“Now art thou cursed from the earth… When thou tillest the ground; it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.” — Genesis 4:11-12
And then He protected Cain!!!
“…Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.” — Genesis 4:15
Man fell out of favor…
“And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.” — Genesis 6:6
But then…
“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.” — Genesis 6:8
do i read to much into things? or is this understandable?

OMW,Secret Agent I had no idea you were so clued up on the Bible. You beat me hands down. That is why I am silent blogging on this one coz I am in the bush. I think I only know 2 or 3 verses ie: John 14 vs 1 & also John 3 vs 16. Eish.
Secret Agent Squirrel on Fri, 19th Nov 2010 2:52 pm
@Kiki, it’s one of the many things i love reading about!
i find it very interesting on how different religions connect to each other.
i find that everything has something to do with the Sumer tablets
found in Mesopotamia.
strangely, the Egyptian religion also revolved around these tablets.
The story of creation, and the story about Adam & Eve are explained more in detail on them,
it’s pretty much the same as the story’s we know in a way, but i feel that key elements are left out of the Bible, like someone altered it to hide information.
same as the book of Enoch which was taken out of the bible. (very interesting to read!)
Chase on Fri, 19th Nov 2010 3:11 pm
“And God said, Let US make man in our image, after our likeness…”
So God was with someone when They created man otherwise He wouldn’t talk to Himself, would He?
When was Christianism created? Because Jesus was a Jewish and lived the Jewish way all his life till the end. On his cross it put “The King of Jews”
Secret Agent Squirrel on Fri, 19th Nov 2010 3:43 pm
@Chase, in short The first Christians were Jewish Christians. The Pentateuch(The five books of Moses, namely Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy) was of great importance to them and they kept its laws, keeping the sabbath and performing circumcision.
Christian beliefs were spreading largely among Jews, and Christianity was a group within Judaism.
They were called Jewish Christians because their membership consisted largely of Jews who had joined them and followed their beliefs and teachings.
They believed Jesus was a prophet who had tried to make people more aware of the intent of the Pentateuch and had tried to intensify the application of its laws.
Chase on Fri, 19th Nov 2010 4:28 pm
Secret Agent Squirrel u r completely wrong, there was never such a thing called Jewish Christians.
Christianism came into effect some 2000 yrs after the passing of Jesus Christ thus the name Christianity is derived from Christ.
To sum it up the 1st religion, was that of Adam which is Islam, followed by Jewish, and by Christianity etc.
Secret Agent Squirrel on Fri, 19th Nov 2010 4:56 pm
@Chase, do some reading on it,
you can go to

@Lehakoe hence u neva heardme defending any type of sin coz according to the way i understand the Bible, dibe di a lekana, there is no petty sin or big sin, whether its sex b4 marriage or homosexuality, they r all the same. it just amazes me that gays dont want 2accept that according to Christianity homosexuality is a sin n its punishable just lyk any other sin, thats it. Ba tlo lla go fihla neng? its gonna stay lyk that until bo mabler want to rerwite the Bible again.
J-Girl on Mon, 22nd Nov 2010 4:40 pm
We live and we learn! @SAS interesting bit on the Jewish Christians let me go and read it!
lorrelai on Thu, 25th Nov 2010 8:52 pm
o i’m not good with words but lemme try ansa SAS on the question of “us” during creation. I assume u know about Trinity, so this was the Father, speaking to the Son & the Holy Spirit. He cursed Cain cos of the wickedness of his heart but protected him because He’s a compassionate forgiving God.
Sorry i understand this blog is not about what i’ve just clarified but niyaqonda moes…
lorrelai on Thu, 25th Nov 2010 9:07 pm
I guess i should thank God that the bible makes so much sense to me. Yes i’m a staunch Christian who believes that Jesus is coming back again. where? Well, i know exactly where! I like & am grateful that i’m “brainwashed” by the word of God, & no i’m no one to be praying for people who have made a choice… For those who want the Bible to make sense to them, then it will cos God knows your hearts. those who dont want it to make sense, then it wont.
