Facebook Twitter

I am sure many of us have tried to convince friends to take that long evolutionary migration from facebook to twitter.  We have all heard the excuses that they give as to why they do not want to make the move.  I was one of those people that refused to be bitten by the twitter bug.  I guess it’s due to the fact that I’m the type of person that refuses to be a trend whore.  I refuse to blindly follow something because everybody else believes that it is the in thing.  I prefer to take time to properly survey something before buying into it.

This year I finally decided to try out this twitter thing because a friend of mine wouldn’t stop nagging.  I quickly realised that it was a completely different ball game from facebook.  The differences and similarities between the two social networks were extremely funny and I thought I should share them.

Facebook is basically a glorified dating site.
This is facilitated by profile pictures, albums and the information that you have to provide on your profile.  People request your friendship and the minute you accept them, they inbox you and start working their way towards a date with you.

Twitter is basically high school all over again.
There are cliques of “cool kids” and groupies that hope to one day become part of the cool kids. The “cool kids” retweet each other and try to prove how connected and fabulous they are. The groupies then respond to what the “cool kids” are saying in hopes of getting a response which seldom comes as their efforts are mostly ignored. The “cool kids” have a way of sifting through replies and only responding to those from people whom they deem worthy of their response.

Most people on twitter aspire to have more followers than people that they follow.
Somehow ensuring that you have more followers than the people that you follow, makes you cool. It’s an ego thing that I am still trying to understand. It makes sense with people like Kanye West as they can’t be expected to follow back 1 000000 people, that wouldn’t be a nightmare. The rest of you with 400 followers and following 80 people are just silly. Unless you are a friend or family, most people on twitter make the decision to follow you back based on how many followers you have. Facebook people, on the other hand, go through your pictures first.

With facebook it is really not about what you have to say.
It is merely about your looks and the amount of nudity you are willing to offer.  You can be uninteresting, dumb and shallow but if you look good; you will have 4000 friends. This is one of the reasons why people who migrate from facebook to twitter find it difficult to survive as your avatar on twitter means nothing.  Profile pictures are a powerful tool on facebook that can take you places. If you do not believe me, I dare you to change your facebook profile picture to a “sexy” pic of yourself and see what effect it will have on your friendship requests, inbox and wall.  People suddenly become concerned with how your day is.

Twitter promotes psychotic behaviour.
There are people that protect their tweets and then follow other people. In the real world, this is the equivalent of hiding behind bushes and observing someone otherwise known as stalking. It is creepy.

Relationships on twitter have a very short shelf life.
People unfollow and block each other in much higher volumes than on facebook. Basically bringing me back to the fact that it’s high school. Today we are best friends, tomorrow we are enemies. You just never know.

Facebook people, because of the nature of the site, tend to get over familiar very quickly.
Just because you commented on each other’s status updates warrants them to write something inappropriate on your wall or as a comment on your status update. E.g. Status: “MaBlerh is tired”. Comment: “Mandla: Is it because you had sex last night? I know you people love sex. LOL! How are you, by the way?”

I have listened to facebook people dogging twitter and saying that people on twitter basically have too much time on their hands and no lives. I’ve heard tweeps (twitter people) laugh at how backwards facebook people are. Generally, people on twitter have a sense of superiority and coolness over people on facebook.

Bottom line is, on both sides, there are aspects that just make you go WTF?!

Wow what a read! Really enjoyed that, you are so on point-especially about only receiving FB friend requests, because of your profile pic. Oh yes and the slimy, horny men who send messages!

Now I feel Bad! My tweets r protected and I follow a lot of tweeps* sigh, *unprotects* facebook has become a marketing tool! I get more group msgs than I do personal and a lot of the time its gigs, parties etc… not that I mind cos fb peeps be inboxing crasy sh!t!

  4. Zida on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 12:07 am

Kwaaaaa. You are so on point MaBleh. I think there’s silliness in both the groups. Like those “celebrities” who are either on facebook or twitter who are only friends or follow each other. If you only engage with your friends, what’s the point of being on a social networking site. They only respond to their friends and avoid or ignore their fans like babhuza izimpukane or something. *yawns*

My tweets r protected that does not mean I’m a stalker hello! I have a reason why my tweets are protected….anyways some people take twitter n facebook seriously like I mean I don’t care how many friends or followers I have infact I prefer having a few people coz I don’t want clutter on my accounts lol….but really people must stop taking twitter n fb serious

  10. Dladla on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 8:38 am

Same here Lue. My tweets are protected but I am not a stalker.

I followed MaBlerh, but instead of tagging me in asking why I locked my tweets he went on to say something like what he’s saying right now.

That’s when I decided to unfollow him. There’s not even one day where I declined a follow request. Not unless it’s one of those porn stars/adverts.

It’s not as if I don’t want people to follow me, but that I want to have control over who does. I do the same thing on the comments on my blog, I possess the right over who comments because it’s MY space.

On Twitter, if you don’t want someone to follow you, you have the right to block them. That’s just that.

  11. Lela on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 8:51 am

For me Twitter didn’t work because of the first reason you mentioned. I just feel it’s for celebs and celeb wanna bes.

  12. Lue on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 8:59 am

” Not unless it’s one of those porn stars/adverts” @Dladla my other reason for locking my tweets b4 locking my tweets I had like a lot of porn what what following n blocking them was difficult coz they always came back with a different name

At leats i got the humour of this one tltltllt,

Man i just can’t get twitter, and i dont think i will ever join it, i am comfortable on FB i just update my opinions about politics general life surroundings or the highlights of the week and debate with my friends. Twitters can feel superior over me FB granddad anytime they want, i just cant get their following stuff…

  14. cijimpi on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 9:03 am

@mablerh.. why did you call it tweetbook instead of facetweet?

tweeter has got cijimpi laid!! so has fb..
fb helps me check whether the people i follow r hot or not..
phela those cropped avatars can b hot but the body..yi bus!!

  15. Buhlebonga on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 9:11 am

Twitter IS high school. Its rather funny though. The cool kids with over 500 followers and who threaten to block you when u being random.
I have 51 friends on Facebook. Its all people I know and like and aint no faking is tolerated.

I locked my twitter profile because there were work people that wanted to track what we say and when they stopped their spying, I unlocked my profile.

But isn’t that the joy of Twitter? So what if you have more followers than the people who follow you? It suits me just fine because there are some that are on that whole #teamfollowback crap and they just spam your whole timeline with #teamfollowback crap and what’s the point then if I am not gonna be able to converse with them without talking about #teamfollowback

Twitter is ur space and u do with it what you want1 If you want to lock, lock, if you don’t then don’t.

Once again thought provoking, as usual.

i follow a few of those self-imposed schlebs who always try to prove how connected they are or that they know famous rich people on twitter. very sad.i laugh.
the other interesting funny aspect of twitter is those ‘friend-ship’ fights we notice then sneng-neng the same people are friends again. after calling each other names in public. ha! i laugh. especially when you know the real truth. Lot of pretence on twitter, but its entertainment anyway. NB im not saying people should not make peace neh.

  20. Khulisiwe on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 9:52 am

I think it all dependes on the type of personality you have. Some people feel the need to comment and tell us what they are eating for breakfast even take photo’s of their food and post them some feel the need to tell us everyday what God fearing people they are and “if you dont put this up on your wall it means you not a child of God” ect ect blah blah blah and then there are people like me im on both FB and twitter i dont comment unless im wishing someone a happy birthday but i do enjoy reading about interesting topics of the day i usualy follow links that have been posted just to keep myself informed. If ive missed an episode of Intersextions i log onto to twitter or FB i know there will be people disecting the whole programme ect ect my point is we all join for different reasons and yes some do join purely for stalking reasons.

  24. Luluwise on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 10:04 am

What a funny perspective and very true. Twitter is like a continuation of high school with the bullies, wannabees, the hoes, the nerds, the pretenders etc. I snicker everytime tweeps badmouth FB as if being on Twitter is superior and that just exposed their pretentious and wanna be tendencies. Interestingly only about 55 000 South Africans are active on Twitter so it understandable that they’ll wanna believe that its exclusive. Its mostly the BB generation always going on about BBM and Ubertweeter, dissing those who dont own a BB. Twitter is becoming elitist, a preserve for the “nouveau riche” which interestingly includes students . Someone said FB is the hood and Twitter the suburbs, lol. Some tweeps wanna stay relevant becoz they dont wanna be outshined by the celebs so they become insitigators by stirring up ish. I do have a twitter account but just like in high school I’m flying under the radar, dont wanna bring attention to myself!

I am on both Twitter and facebook,
I’m very active on facebook because there are people i know there, my friends upload pictures all the time, i always feel like I belong there.
twitter on the other hand, i follow very interesting people, mostly celebrities, etc, but i tell you those people dont follow you back, if you comment on their tweets, they dont care…unless you start to insult them then they tell you about how successful they are blah blah,
Twips (as they call themselves) are very boastful, all you hear is what they are eating, what they are buying etc..mfm

if you dont have any personal friends (people that you know outside of twitter) on twitter, forget about ever fitting in on twitter!

  28. Abut' Majesa on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 10:30 am

*In tears*The last time someone explained exactly how I feel was R-Kelly with “I Blv I can Fly”, Mablerh you are gifted. Celebs have been trying to force us to join the Twitter & BB trend for a while now & I’m sick of it.

Twitter is a tailor maid for celebrities & no body else. Twitter fixed one great problem with facebook, when a person sends you a friendrequest by default facebook will add the persons status updates into your news feed, now the problem with this is if you are a celebrity & you have 5000 friends & your getting 5000 updates on your feed every hour then, you cant see your close friends updates, which made it hard for celebs to create there closed circles.

Twitter removed the friend request concet & introduced the following concept, meaning when you follow a person he/she wont see any of your updates unless he/she follows you back & this created a social netwroking world that gave all the celebrities power. This meant celebrities can create social circles that can be visible from the outside & the non famouse people would obsess over being part of them.

facebook and twitter serve a different purpose. Facebook is very good with tracing and keeping in touch with long lost friends scattered around the globe and networking. it connect people.

while twitter is current and you get updates of what’s happening as it happens because people update their status every second..you are well up to date with trends, events, latest movies etc by just following people who are trend setters, bloggers of note and people who are in the industry of your interest. I like twitter

i use Facebook to connect with my friedns i only have few friends. and these are friends, collagues, and family.

Twitter, i luurv twitter. But sometimes i just wish people did not bring their mood swings on Twitter. People should just have sense of humor. Twitter will be boring if we all put ‘LOL’ at the end of every tweet.

Twitter is very informative and entertaining if you follow ‘right’ people

  36. posh on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 11:04 am

By following people like KIKI yesterday I read on twitter that EVE is perfoming in Botswana later this month…

  37. Bruised Ego on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 11:30 am

    Nice…

When I joined Twitter I followed more than 500 people, but I noticed that half of them were tweeting nonsense, I unfollowed, now I’m left with over 300 people I’m following. So it doesn’t matter if you have more followers than friends because you can’t follow everyone, some people hardly tweet, so its not a good idea to follow such people. However this doesn’t apply to celebs because they’ve got thousands of followers but follow few tweeps.

I don’t care about groupies, they can be groupies anytime because we all have our fav celebs, so why not show them love… But some people over do it, by tweeting celebs only.

Facebook is good to push and market your business or parties, twitter is just for gossip, people trying to set the record straight, wannabes etc.

  38. THAT Chick on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 11:34 am

My only wish is that I came up with both sites,I actually joined tweeter early last year before it was a trend but still have 8 followers and following 11 people recommended on JC. I appreaciate social networks but I really find it is all about looking cool, how many people you know, letting all and sundry on your personal life. I really prefer few quality real life friends than a bunch of 100+ people I can never ask help from.As always, nice article Mabler.

  45. @Tendaijoe on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 12:09 pm

Having read a great deal of other articles on Twitter, I decided a do a quick summary of all the ways you can use Twitter for both your professional or personal life. Some of these methods go beyond the use of Twitter as a lifestreaming device:

1.Personal Branding. Twitter is a social media platform you can use to build your personal brand. It has the primary benefit of developing a casual persona and establishes you as a social personality that is connected and approachable. As Twitter adoption increases, new users will be drawn towards well established Twitter personas.

2.Get Feedback. Need an alternative perspective on how a website looks or the right course of action to take? Blast out a message asking for advice and you’ll receive replies from other users. This collective intelligence can be used as fodder for articles or projects.

3.Hire People. Need a good logo designer, marketer or programmer? Send out a message asking for recommendations. This is a very quick and easy way to hire freelancers or even companies based on familiar recommendations.

4.Direct traffic. Twitter can be used to get traffic to your websites or the sites of friends. If you ask your friends to tweet about it, the message will spread faster and further as other active users pick it up. There is a viral nature to all types of news, even on a site like Twitter.

5.Read News. Twitter users often link to useful sites or articles and can be a source of scoops and alternative news. You can also subscribe to Twitter feeds for specific websites/conferences, which allows you to receive and view content quickly. This is very useful for active social news participants.

6.Make New Friends. Like any other social network, Twitter has a built-in function for you to befriend and track the messages of other users. This is an easy way for you connect with people outside of your usual circle. Make an effort to add active users you find interesting. A Twitter acquaintance can be developed into a long lasting friendship.

7.Network for benefits. Twitter can be used as a socializing platform for you to interact with other like-minded people, especially those in the same industry. It can be used to establish consistent and deeper relationships for future benefits such as testimonials or peer recommendations.

8.Use it as a ToDo list. Use Twitter to record down what you need to do while you are away from the computer. Mark the tweet as a favorite to file it for referencing. Another alternative is to use an Online task management service that is synced with Twitter. One example is Remember The Milk.

9.Business Management. Twitter can be used as a company intranet that connects employees to one another. Workers can liaise with each other when working on group projects. Particularly useful when certain workers go out often in the field. Updates could be set to private for security reasons.

10.Notify Your Customers. Set up a Twitter feed for the specific purpose of notifying customers when new products come in. Customers can subscribe via mobile or RSS for instant notification. Twitter can also be used to provide mini-updates for one-on-one clients.

11.Take Notes. Twitter provides you with an easy way to record important ideas or concepts you want to explore further. Include links relevant to ideas you want to explore. Note taking can also be done offline via mobile applications.

12.Event Updates. Businesses can use Twitter as a means to inform event participants and latest event happenings/changes. This is a hassle-free way of disseminating information, especially when you don’t have the means to set up a direct mobile link between you and the audience

13.Find Prospects. Twitter can be used as a means to find potential customers or clients online. Do a search for keywords related to your product on Twitter Search and then follow users. Tweet about topics parallel to your product and close prospects away from public channels by using direct messages or offline communications. Discretion and skill is needed in this area.

14.Provide Live coverage. Twitter’s message size limit prevents detailed coverage of events but it can allow you to provide real-time commentary which may help to spark further discussion or interest on the event as other Twitter users spread the message. Very useful for citizen journalism.

15.Time Management and Analysis. Twitter can simply be used to keep a detailed record of what you are doing every daily. This might be boring for others but this type of usage is useful when you want to analyze how you spend and manage your time.

16.Set Up Meetings. Twitter can help you organize impromptu meetups. For example, you can twitter a message while at a cafe, event or art gallery and arrange to meet fellow users at a specific spot. It’s an informal and casual way of arranging a meeting.

17.Acquire Votes. Send a link to your stories you’ve submitted in other social news sites like Digg. Sometimes your followers will vote up the stories because they agree with it. This allows you to acquire more support for your efforts on other social media websites.

So for those who have no idea how they could use twitter in an interesting way ,you will pick some tips and point from this article i found online.

Twitter is very informative and entertaining if you follow ‘right’ people (TRUE)

I’m on FB & Twitter but I’m always on twitter I don’t really care about fb, but because my phone alerts me immediately when I have a msg or whatever on fb that’s when I go and check.
I find FB very sad and sooo behind current news wise.

You won’t believe me when I say at my place I don’t have a DSTV yet but I’m soo updated on what’s playing on dstv, mtv events , awards etc and being the curious person that I am I google some celebs from the shows through seeing their names on twitter and now I know who’s who and what shim does.
I’m a very current person, always up to date my friends who I have been begging to join twitter in ages always call/ text me to ask about who’s who or what’s happening and all that, some how I feel like a an entertainment journalist all thanks to twitter.

About who u follow, well it depends on the type of people that u attract, because I’m such good friends with tweeps that I have never met but know them through their tweets.

I heard about Twitter in September 2008, joined up, lost my password and ended up making a new one.
I joined because I use it as a journalistic tool, especially when one needs the view of the public on a matter and it helps.

The celeb thing is just a side bar and I have made it a point that I follow ordinary people more than celebs- I follow about 10 celebs- They are the people with the real stories and issues and yes, some do act groupie sometimes, but that’s the joy of twitter.

@kiki EVE concert clashes with the weekend of my holiday trip to Mozambique with my gal friends..otherwise I was going to tag along…Wow I think it is going to be a lot of fun, a road trip to Botswana…misbehaving (well)!

  61. chilled sweet lemonade on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 1:14 pm

i just think people take these “things” wayyyy too seriously!!!!
its just twitter, so if a “celeb” doesnt respond….life goes on really and truly.

but i just find that there are people that try wayyyy to hard to befriend celebs ie: there is a lady that always greets the usual suspects/celebs and that grinds my tits coz she is following a lot more people that connie, lucia, gabi and lelo…i just think wa fosta!!!!!

i personally find it as a “filler” so i really dont get offended if someone doesnt respond to me etc on twitter

i deactivated my fb account 3 months ago…..the time had come, it just wasnt serving a purpose in my life anymore.( im not saying twitter does) but im settled at twitter…..who knows it might just bore me in a few….

anywhoooooo thats my take i this whole thing….

let me tswee, tswee, tswee out of here!

MaBlerh such a beautiful funny read. iam restisting the twitter migration for all the reasons you listed. dont mind the poeple who think every article is about them, its not your fault they are bit slow and are used to the Daily Sun kind of writting.

  67. Lue on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 1:53 pm

Errrrrrr #Engrish ‘writting’ writing you mean *hides*

  68. MsUndersin on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 2:18 pm

    What an interesting read….

I have both Facebook and Twitter and Im really starting to get bored by the two, blame ADD

Twitter: I really dont understand why people gotta have their undies in a knot everytime a celeb doesnt respond to their tweets. You hardly ever see celebs commenting on your status updates on Facebook even, so whats the fuss?

Facebook: There is NOTHING current about it, it is always delayed! People have fun over the weekend you only see the pics on Tuesday/ Wednesday. With twitter everything is current, real-time, NOW, twitpics are posted as the event occurs!!

Twitter: Too many angry people, always trying to bring celebs down so they can gain popularity

Facebook:When you update your status update more than 6 times in one day you are seen as an attention lover, then i ask who isnt!

Lemme stop here before i get accused of “Blogging within a Blog”

hai wena Ntoko the Gentleman, unamanga!! atleast on facebook u get responses from friends u have unlike twitter!! i started with twitter then joined facebook recently and i must say am loving it!!

  77. Secret Agent Squirrel on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 4:15 pm

i feel that twitter is more for celebs, i know people that only follow celebs to get a glimpse of what their lives must be like.
i was on twitter and FB but deleted my accounts as i have no time to maintain them, i work during the day to 5, and after that i have a highly demanding 2nd job.

i also feel that Celebs can’t always reply to everyone, as they get so many FB messages and tweets, it would take hours to respond. and it’s not that the choose to only reply to the “Cool Kids” it’s because the mostly know each other, as Celebs are mostly friends with Celebs, because they only have time to socialize at events, and that is where your friends are most of the time. does this make any sense?

  78. Nalizo on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 4:16 pm

Spot on observation from you Mablerh.
I’m on both sites, there was a time when I used to be so into Twitter, but nowadays I only check once in a while.I joined Twitter in February 2008,I only have just more than a 100 followers. It used to be so entertaining then, don’t take me wrong,it is still entertaining namanje but I do get fedup with the zillion retweets.Twitter suddenly got better when I stopped following REVRUNWISDOM beginning of this year….lol.The one thing I like about Twitter is that it keeps you up to date, not just about celebs, but the breaking news.Facebook is nice cause you are able to find long lost friends all the way back to Primary, its even nice if you’re planning a reunion.Either than that guys, its just social networking really.

Q: Whats up with the tweeps that are always asking for followers on Facebook? You see a Facebook status that says: Do follow @…. on twitter. If tweeps are so cool, why do they want to recruit boring Facebook peeps to Twitter.Or is it a case of increase the number of followers?

  79. Lady gaga on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 4:17 pm

the only thing i love abt twitter is its very informative. u get to know recent news happening in the world in secs nd thats great!!

    Kwakwakwakwakwa this is true

Nna I joined twitter for Celebs only, i tweeted em ol da time #GroupieTendencies, but later I followed non_celebs.. and they’re actually funny and cool more than the so cold “cool kids”

    Nice one nontombi

  84. Pam on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 4:33 pm

Mina I only had family & friends as FB friends but I de-activated my a/c cause I realised that my FB friends wer not themselves on FB but FB characters from FB soapie. The ones I know personally I felt like I didnt know them anymo. I was also tired of the same stupid updates everyday(I miss my man, he’s a tiger in bed & bla bla). I mean, really, like there’s nothin else 2 write about. I didnt want 2 delete any1 so I decided 2 just de-activate

Some women even go 2 Edgars 4 free make-up then Foto first 2 take pics posing next 2 those funny curtains/malaphu just 4a FB profile pic. Nudity/bikini/under wear profile pics= a way 2 get FB friend requests, how desperate. I dont mind models with underwear profile pics coz they r models but non models, hayi khona

  93. kakapana on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 5:32 pm

But Tendaijoe did state that he found the tips and points from an article he found online.

  95. lorrelai on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 6:01 pm

hay guys Tendai did mention in the end that he had found the info online, though i think he could’ve just copied a link instead of the whole article.
    Nice article Mablerh.

I can’t say much about the length of the response because I have been guilty of the same offence a number of times.

I was referring to these comments: Thank you MissAN. I thought as much, this Tenda person wants to come act all clever on us with that Novel as if he wrote it. SMH.

I couldn’t even get to the second chapter of TendaJoe’s novel let alone read/see the last part where he/she credits the source. The whole thing is toooooooo loooooooooong. Couldn’t shim just give us a link instead of copying & pasting? *snores*

  103. kakapana on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 6:53 pm

I suppose s/he could have, but it’s best not to respond to someone’s post before reading the entire response. #justsayin

  104. Ivy on Tue, 9th Nov 2010 7:54 pm

My 1st response was ‘It’s too long’ and that’s a fact. The source thing came AFTER MissAN posted the link which is what Tenda should have done in the 1st place (post a link) #OTTNO

Had to log in to say that this was a very good article. Well done.

I was on FB cause all the cool kids at work kept on telling me to get on. Got onto FB and didn’t see the point. People from the past must stay in the past. So I deactivated FB and came to Twitter with a pseudonym so people couldn’t find me. But I’m back to my real name now. #FYI

I quite dislike it when people ignorantly compare both sites and argue for a ‘winner’. Their functions are quite different as nicely shown by MaBlerh.
Facebook is essentially a social network, Twitter is an information network. So comparing both is like comparing lotion and deodorant; they are both cosmetics and good for you, but clearly you can’t have a clear cut winner.
