Lira’s Return To Love
January 10, 2011 by Brown Shuga

Songstress, LIRA is back with her fourth studio album, titled Return To Love. After releasing All My Love (2003), Feel Good (2006), and Soun In Mind (2008), and releasing LIVE In Concert – A Celebration (2009), 2011 sees Lerato Molapo dropping an 11 track album that she says “draws together everything she has worked for, since the beginning of her career.
This is what she says about why it’s called “Return To Love” :
““My first album was titled ALL MY LOVE and it was an album that initially caused some heartache for me. It was released at a time when I hadn’t yet found even the real beginnings of the sound and presence that I wanted to convey and was fumbling a little in the dark. But yet that album forms part of my history and so this new record is something of a statement about an acceptance of who I am – a return to me.”

I will not lie and say I buy Lira’s CDs, I don’t. I got her DVD as a gift early last year and that’s when I started to appreciate her as an artist and realised just how much she respects her trade. I’ll wait for the first single and then decide on whether to get it or not but the album cover definitely gets a thumbs up.
What do you think?

Cleo04patra on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 1:30 am
Lira is a quality artist in our country but i’m sorry, i just can’t. Will also wait for first single but i really cannot. Her voice does nothing for me and she always leaves me wishing she could give her songs to a better vocalist. But hayi ke, we’ll see.
Zida on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 1:30 am
I’m with you BS. Lira yena she is not gifted as a singer and her success is attributed to her hard work. She’s very respectful as you’ve said. And she’s very professional. If you could see her diary, you’ll go crazy…her days are always jam packed with things to do. That’s the only thing I admire about her.
As for the new album, I’ll wait to hear the first single on the radio and from what people say about the album.
Kiki on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 1:43 am
I don’t own any of her previous albums but this cover is really screaming ‘come get me’ I love it.
Let’s wait and see! But I agree, she is very professional & passionate about her music.
lwandie on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 6:00 am
I respect Lira as an artist because of the heart and soul she puts in her work.
She is very gifted in her particular genre and produces a well polished product each time. Her music however has a very specific target market like the likes of Erika Badau and Sade.I enjoy her live performances and specific tracks but I do not collect her music.
LeeM on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 6:20 am
Lira is one of the artists I respect wholeheartedly and will definitely buy this cd as soon as it is out whether I’ve heard the single before or not.
She hasn’t disappointed me and I’ve bought aLl her cds, plus the dvd (save for all my love)
Uthando on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 8:20 am
nami i don’t buy her music but got the dvd as a gift and i must say iyavuma shame. i will wait and see.
Makgamatha on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 8:21 am

most people only started recognising her after the live DVD but i have following her long before that i remember my friends asking gore what is it i like about her music/
i have not heard any song from her latest album but its definetely on my shopping list this month end.i heard shell be siging live today on khaya fm but my office radio ga e kene khaya fm so i guess i ll miss out.
Maratahelele on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 8:26 am
I find it funny when people throw words like “Quality” and “Not a good singer” in one sentence. If she is quality as many thinks, then she is a good singer, case closed.
I was introduced to Lira by my brother who hardly listens to what he calls “circular” music.I never looked back and I have all her CD’s since she left 999.One thing I like most about her is writing abilities. This girl seems to write from the heart.Even when he songs doesnt have good instruments, you just wanna listen to the lyrics.
I do not want to listen to the new single cause I know it will be good, nomaknajani.I will definitely not hesitate buying this new cd when it comes out.
Lady Guava on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 8:57 am
I wonder what type of a radio is that that doesn’t tune to Khaya FM…lol.
I also respect Lira for her hard-work and dedication to her craft. She doesn’t have the best of voices, but she has good song choice that somehow suits her voice. Ohw and she’s got awesome backing vocalists as well, Priscilla Moeketsi & Brenda Mtambo (on the Dvd).
I’m proud of her achievements thus far and i’m expecting this to be a beautiful album jaaka tlwaelo.
Zida on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 8:58 am
@ Maratahelele. That would be “secular”.
Lira is proof that talent is not necessarily everything. With the right support structures, one can achieve a lot.
Zida on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 8:59 am
Well, and determination.
manny on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 9:09 am

Cleo04patra on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 9:24 am
Quality musician in terms of hard work and good production and song-writing… Good vocals she does not have.
Maratahelele on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 9:33 am

Cinnabon on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 11:27 am
I LOVE Lira…am looking forward to this album.
KevCare on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 11:52 am
I buy Lira’s albums (after the 999 phase) coz they are timeless!! I might not know much about music but having a “great voice” doesnt mean u make a “great artist” #iThink. Its about exceptional delivery, performance, artistry, lyrics, professionalism etc… Ask ANYONE who has seen Lira perform live if they were disappointed!!
Lebo Mathosa ddnt have a “great voice!”
Brenda Fassie ddnt have a “great voice!”
Zida on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 12:07 pm
Are you kidding me KevCare? Are you seriously comparing Lira to Lebo and Brenda. Ok, ngiyezwa ke uBrenda because she had a days, but Lebo? Have you ever heard the song she did with Margaret Matsage and Vicky Vilakazi? Have you heard the duet she did with Keith Sweat? Have you heard the hooks she did with the kwaito guys Trompies, etc? Did you see her shows where this would be proven that she was not just a studio singer? Oh well, I guess at the end of the day it’s your opinion.
Makgotso on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 12:27 pm
@Zida KevCare he is really kidding. Lebo hd timeless voice
posh on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 1:12 pm
kevcare is right Lebo didnt have a great voice…
Lela on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 3:17 pm
Hayi ke ngoku ningazodlala apha, futhi you cant compare abo Lebo and Brenda with Lira. Yes its a fact Lira is not very strong vocally but hard work, good production and song writing cover for that and she ends up with quality work.
Bruised Ego on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 4:27 pm
Well said @Maratahelele!
I refuse to believe that there are people who put ‘great voice’ and ‘great songs’ in one sense, really? Great voice doesn’t mean anything, what’s important is whether the song is nice/boring (think Shakira)!
Lira is a living proof that you don’t have to sing in a top notch voice to be a best seller…She loves her craft and I know this album will be nice because she puts her all when it comes to her work!
Brown Shuga on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 4:37 pm
LOL @ Lebo and Brenda didn’t have great voices.. hayi…we must redefine “great”
ugogal on Mon, 10th Jan 2011 4:58 pm
I think Lira is a great performer & this is as far as she can be compared to Lebo and Brenda.
The great voice trophy goes to Brenda!
Cupcake on Tue, 11th Jan 2011 6:58 am
Hay, dnt play games. Brenda and Lebo cnt be compared to Lira.maybe we should jst learn to appreciate every artist on their owm without comparisons. Lira doesn’t hv a great voice bt she delivers beautiful music and seems 2b taking her career very seriously.
Uthando on Tue, 11th Jan 2011 8:25 am
Eish guys mina i don’t get it if you say Lira don’t have a great voice what do you mean kahle hle??????? b’cos lengane sings kahle kakhulu then most of the people I know who are in the music industry asebafa nabasaphila.
OMG comparing her to Brenda and Lebo is so so so out, the kind of music they did is totally different from lo ka Lira so how can you compare that!!!!!!!!!!
just give credit nje where it due without having the never ending BUT haw, Lira sings beautifully nje that is that
buy her CD or wait for the single it up to you.
Lela on Tue, 11th Jan 2011 11:06 am
Guys its ok to think Lira is a great singer, nothing wrong really cause we dont all have the same ear when it comes to music.
GA on Tue, 11th Jan 2011 11:14 am
mh, ya, Lira’s music is not my cup’a tea. The whole soulfull drill ya bo Sade,Erykah Badu, etc….i will like one song from all of them…i could not even trully fall inlove ith India Arie nommater how much a tried. I love MoTown like mad though…
My sister on the other hand looooves Lira, and coz i love my sister to pieces, i buy her Lira CDs, atleast i kida support.
Watched her Motswako interview maabane…was soo bored, and i think it didnt help that the interviewer couldnt ask “Lira-worthy” type of questions. Some people just cant do “deep and profound”..and shem its alryt. Relebogile would have nailed that interview#justsaying.
Lady Guava on Tue, 11th Jan 2011 11:53 am
GA, i hope you are not referring to Relebogile wa DYBO…lol
Guys Lira’s voice is just normal nothing wow about it, she sings good music that is perfect for her voice. Lebo’s voice was not smooth but it had substance and therefore the wow-factor-nyana. Brenda had a beautiful sober voice.
Siphokazi has a beautiful WOW voice, but her song choice leaves waaay much to be desired. Thandiswa (Bongo Muffin days, even on last album) had a beautiful wow voice.
GA on Tue, 11th Jan 2011 12:17 pm
@Lady Guava..am refering to the previous motswako presenter (i may have the name wrong though?)
Thiwe on Tue, 11th Jan 2011 12:29 pm
I am a big Lira fan and cant wait to get the album.
I do sometimes think the singles chosen for radio play dont necessariyly do the album justice,so I just go straight to music shops to get my copy coz you find the music in there is so much more than what they’re selling to us.
e.g. Wa Mpaleha from the Soul In Mind album didnt do the album justice coz there’s hits like Hamda, Soul in Mind and Believer that could have done a better job for the album.
girly.diva on Tue, 11th Jan 2011 12:36 pm
a friend introduced me to Lira’s music bcuz of a particular song she like back then, anyway I fell in love with her music ever since then I never looked back too.
The way that I love her music and her I can’t even find anything wrong about her, I’m huge fan, I have the dvd too, I got it in jozi.
I will wait for the new single.
Sarafina on Tue, 11th Jan 2011 5:23 pm
Hhayi ke I rest my case on the ever so hard to please South Africans. Suppose all that she has archived so far doesn’t mean, maybe until she wins a Grammy then you will realize her great voice. I love Lira, she is talented, and damn good at what she does and oh with so much grace and humility.
She is such a breath of fresh air from the half naked, attention celebrities we read about every Sunday. That’s my opinion; I will be buying her CD.
Lela on Tue, 11th Jan 2011 9:52 pm
Even if she wins a grammy the fact will still remain, she is not that strong vocally and by stating that we dont mean we are not pleased with her.
Lady Guava on Wed, 12th Jan 2011 8:30 am
Thank you Lela, heeyi people get emotional out there!
Silvio on Wed, 12th Jan 2011 3:53 pm
Lira is wearing a dress that looks like one of Toni Braxtons CD Covers #thinking
Thiwe on Wed, 12th Jan 2011 4:32 pm
@ Lela: spoken like someone who knows what she’s talking about. your man’s ear for music seems to be rubbing off on you:-)

@ Silvio: the Pulse album ne? you are very observant, tjo.
Thiwe on Wed, 12th Jan 2011 4:36 pm
just looked at it again and i think its just the flowy part, the middle part and the colour that are the same. but i think the design is totally different.

Hi ya’ll let me start by saying how shocked I am with all this hating. I suppose anyone is entitle to their opinions so I wont dwell on the obvious.
Personally I feel Lira is one of the few quality artist that this country is blessed with. Her vocal capability stands out with not much effort and by this I mean its just God given qha! For those of you who were at the Jhb Fashion Week on Sat 19th Feb. You would agree with me in saying not only can she sing but can do it when caught of guard too, without any voice training required. She happened to be there as a guest like the rest of us, but due to the waiting which was getting ppl frustrated she improvised and just say to get the crowd going, and man were we in awe! Quality singing peeps! Now thats Lira.
