The DeGorgeous Man “Clutch” Explained

February 10, 2011 by

Two days ago, Dumi wrote a satirical piece on Fashion titled “When Good Clothes Happen To Good People”. I call it a satirical piece because even though he insists it was a true reflection of his thoughts, the readers thought the only way whatever he said would make sense was if the piece was meant to be satire. Because Dumi, who is a professional stylist who has styled numerous magazine covers, called Selae’s lilac dress a “hot little number”, I shall also refer to his piece as “satire”.

In his post, Dumi included a picture of Fashion Blogger, Maque De Gorgeous and called him fashion forward. In the pic, Maque was carrying a clutch bag. This created so much havoc, with readers criticizing Maque for his outfit, calling him Fashion FOEward (kwaaa at this) and naming his clutch all sorts of names. Conclusion: They all seemed to agree that it is WRONG for a man to carry a clutch.

I had issues with Maque’s clutch when I first saw him carrying it in November & told him, but seeing that he wasn’t phased by the criticism and was comfortable enough to just laugh at all the comments on the blog, without taking offense made me go “WOW, that’s a first!” So I had a chat with him to find out more about why he carries a clutch, what’s in it, maybe we are missing out on something huge here… Here’s how the conversation went.

Brown Shuga: Why are you a man and carrying a clutch bag? Do you call it a clutch? I first saw this on you, then David Tlale?

Maque DeGorgeous: KWAA! Why am I a man, seriously Lelo… you have a son, I’m sure I do not need to explain why he’s your son and not daughter.

BS: LOL suka maan, I meant why are you a man that carries a clutch! tltltltl

Maque: Without being silly though, a clutch bag – I call a spade a spade, none of this mutch/man-clutch business, it’s a clutch! – is a portable way of carrying around a lot of things without using a manbag which can sometimes be a schlepp to drag around.

BS: And it has nothing to do with your sexuality, it’s just a new trend for men?

Maque: Many would say yes, but not at all! Look at the old fashioned diary-cum-wallet-cum-hold-all that men, including most people’s fathers, used to carry around back in the days. It was as small as a clutch and had enough space to carry everything AND it had a note pad in it… They came in different sizes and designs and were, in essence, an accessory that was very handy! Is it an upcoming trend now? Well, it’s a revisited trend, certainly not new and with more men needing to carry more things around, it’s certainly an alternative to a man-bag (Google: male clutch bag images and you’ll see what I mean).

BS: Interesting. So, where do you buy these clutches? From the ladies’ side of the shop?

Maque: Lelo, when I shop, I look at the shop in its entirety! I do not adhere to “men’s section, lady’s section” (obviously taking into consideration the absolute ladies zone, where y’all find coverings for your lady-bits). It is soo restrictive to look at the shop based on gender when, in most cases, the looks were adapted from something the buyers and merchandisers saw in a Male Collection at some fashion show. When I shop and I know what I want, I stop at nothing to get it! What I am saying is, am I going to let a buyer dictate to me that the shirt I saw in XYZ’s male collection show is really for women (when it comes to their store)? Serious Bull! So where do I get my clutches? Usually from bag and accessories stores… I do not buy my bags in department stores which dictate to me what is male and what isn’t.

BS: LOL okay. What do you put in the bag though?

Maque: I usually have a camera, my phone, money, bank card, car keys, cigarretes and lighter, facial tissues, wet wipes (hate sticky fingers), gum, lip balm, hand lotion and sometimes a writing pad.

“One of my everyday clutches (big enough to fit my laptop too) with the usual content (from left to right: car keys, lip balm, cologne booster, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, pack of ciggies, hand lotion, facial tissues, Camera and cellphone).”

BS: Heheh okay, at least it’s lip balm, not lip gloss. Now tell me, you have quite some interesting views on Fashion. Where does all this “awareness” or “love” come from?

Maque: TO be perfectly honest, I think I was groomed to love it. I was raised by my mother, aunts and grandmother. They ALL loved fashion and it was my grandmother, a popular seamstress in our area, that caught my attention. She had the most fascinating “fashion” things in the house – that was the awareness for me. The love grew when I was free to explore and express myself. Right now, I am in love…

BS: Nice one and seeing that you have such a weird taste in fashion… who are your top 3 best dressed (famous) women in SA and why?

Maque: Weird taste…. LOL! Look, I may have a “weird” personal taste, but I know what’s broadly appealing and what isn’t, based on that person’s creativity in owning their outfit – I hate mannequins!

  1. Simphiwe Dana’s dress sense is amazing. She is definitely one of my best dressed girls. She’s a fan of avant garde pieces, which she gives a livable-in look (versus someone looking uncomfortable in their outfit). It’s like she takes ownership of what she wears and that’s what makes her more appealing than anything!!
  2. Lindiwe Suttle: She has thee most impeccable taste in clothes, shoes and accessories. She’s a risk-taker and has the attitude to carry her clothes. A definite and absolute must-have when wearing anything!
  3. Sonia Booth: She has a very experimental taste in clothes and I love that spirit in someone. She was blessed with the body to carry off a black bag, so she can roam as freely as she wants in fashion, for the rest of us however, we need to set margins of experimentation – but not narrow ourselves to dull clothing to avoid being criticized.

BS: Okay, and your worst Dressed?

Maque: Eish, wa bona, nou… Look, they sometimes get it right and sometimes wrong, it’s the nature of fashion… I will comment on the last time they made social pages:

  1. Tina wa Prosper (at the Metros)
  2. Rebecca Malope – Modimo o tlong wotla bathong. But I just miss the point with her.

BS: LOL you have to watch Rebecca on Gospel Time, she gets it right most of the time. Maybe she should use her show’s stylist for events too. So given the reaction from JC Bloggers/Readers and all the names they called your outfit and “clutch” it sounds like we need a few fashion tips ourselves. What would “DeGorgeous’ 4 Fashion Tips For JC Bloggers” be?

Maque: That was hilarious by the way. I’m just so glad I am comfortable with where and what I wear… I’m just interested in how highly they regard the gender-roles when it comes to fashion. ANYTHING unusual is questioned and mocked while the usual gets applauded. Anything that is deemed a “ladies trend” but available for men makes them pull their weaves, and mess their pants… WHY? Because people tend to be fixated with what they know and anything that shakes their world is initially met with disapproval until they let it simmer… I do not blame them, it’s human nature – hence I am not offended. I am not making any excuses for what I wear (I’m having a blast!) – it’s just that I get shocked when people are shocked when they look at me.

BS: LOL and I’m always shocked whenever I see you…

Maque: I wish it was 2001 again so we can see how people react to JLo’s versace plunging neck green dress, given how that iconic piece has made its way into many women’s wardrobes despite shaking their heads at first… Just to make note of their initial reactions.

As far as DeGorgeous fashion tips go, there isn’t a fix-all ingredient for fashion, but I will say:

  1. Play it safe when you have to but live a little when you don’t. Is it such a train-smash to get it wrong? No! The only ship-wreck is when you realise too late that you’ve missed the fun in experimenting – trust me, mkhulu trying ama-kipkip is not my idea of living a little (bad example)
  2. Try to be as comfortable as possible but dare to splash a little razzmatazz in your outfit
  3. Incorporate your favourite trend (yesteryear’s or not) into everyday wear: even if it’s just an accessory (a scarf with the latest print/fabric…)
  4. Shop for basics and mix and match them with everything (including that 2 metre piece of material you have no idea what you’re going to do with).

ABOVE ALL ELSE, Support the locals. Stop running overseas to find something we already have! Local’s best (and does not have to be expensive!)

BS: Wow, that makes a lot of sense and I’m learning a lot from what you are saying. So do I have to like the way you dress to be able to enjoy your blog (www.maquedegorgeous.blogspot.com ) or would it appeal to everyone who loves fashion?

Maque: My blog is rarely about me – other than most of the things being my opinion and fully open to anyone who does not share in my views. I am under the impression that anyone interested in Fashion will be able to enjoy my blog – from the social commentary, fashion show commentary, the Fashion Industry at large – ALL LOCAL, authentic and sometimes entertaining.

BS: Okay, we will check it out. Thank you Maque for all the enlightenment, it’s been fun chatting to you . I just wish my readers could see all your facial expressions and gestures lol. Parting shot?

Maque: I strongly believe “normal” and pretty are just too easy and overrated, really… a tux jacket, white shirt, jeans, nice shoes, belt and either a bowtie or tie… COME ON!!! Where’s the fun in that? can we see a little more personality than that – is my take on the subject of Fashion.

MAQUE’s BAGS:

Snake Skin (real isht) evening bag

Clutch (as seen at the CH event)

Soldier’s Bag, vintage

At the 2009 Africa Fashion Week Awards with an orange oversized wallet (aka purse)

And finally…

“Attending an OTT-themed party recently. This outfit is completely ridiculous if I say so myself – had so much fun with it! With a theme like OTT, I drew “inspiration” from Roman Gladiators (you know, the ones that go to war and isht) and this was the result.”

SMH,the last picture is rather shocking…is that gold thing around the neck a tie or a necklace, are those “man” leggings?
Maybe this was for halloween or kwakukho iFunny day somewhere…

Marque is very articulate and knows about style, i like that. He doesn’t seem too fazed about what others think and that’s very important as Style is 90% You and 10% trends.

Kodwa, cha ngeke! A clutch on a man? I cannot!!! Use your pockets and just live life. Some things really are crossing the line. I’m not even properly convinced on the man-bag let alone a clutch. I just like manly men who shower, shave and go! This androgynous fashion that we see nowadays is a great, more power to those fashin-forwards, but personally, it’s too much!

Oh wow… Initially when I saw the link posted on Twitter I rolled my eyes, but now that I’ve read it I’m rocking a different shade of gloss!
Very futuristic and I love the fact that he’s unapologetic about HIS take of fashion.

    Boys. All. Pause.

The last picture! WOW! Look at him tucking away his dingleberry preserves.

Is he a resident of the cunt cosmetology at Mbau’s Mansion?

    I have never!

Oh the irony of keeping wet wipes in the clutch and the use of Baby Wipe’s picture. Go figure!

  7. Shower_Cap on Thu, 10th Feb 2011 11:10 pm

Well he said it! He “somaar” gets the “man-clutchbags” from the ladies’ section? #Brainwork! Hmmm! That explains the leggings and the wrap skirt on the last picture! I say no to this trend cos now these men are gon borrow diClutch tsa rona! Aybo! #Drowning in shock!

Nyc one lelo , look my view is that its OK to experiment.but sometimes you have to accept it when an experiment goes wrong ! I for one will never own a clutchbag as gay as I am,but my question is… first a clutchbag next will be ?????

I read BS and I totally understand where he is coming from but in reality…. a LINE has to be drawn and I draw it @ the last picture…wrap skirt, leggings and gladiator heels ??? That’s DRAG not FASHION !!! And wud kill you BS if I caught you in such an ensemble calling it “fashion” *calls joan rivers to intervene*

  12. Brown Shuga on Thu, 10th Feb 2011 11:27 pm

LOL I think the theme of David Tlale’s birthday party was “OVER THE TOP” so that outfit is over the top for me heheheheh. It was a dress up party… like people dress up for halloween? LOL

  13. Sizzles on Thu, 10th Feb 2011 11:32 pm

If you are a man and you are saying you have no boundries when it comes to clothes, you myt not know it yet……but you are homosexual.
So he looked at that Cuba Gooding jnr picture and thot “this is it”? Smh,that picture looks so wrong on so many levels

What I totally loved about this guy & what most celebs & us ‘ordinary’ people could learn from him : he doesn’t let what other people say or comment abt him get to him : he actually commented on the blog where ppl were on his case about his clutch and he laughed it off!

He is Teflon!Big ups to him!For being true to himself & allowing people to have their own opinions and sticking to his guns!

  16. Shower_Cap on Thu, 10th Feb 2011 11:53 pm

BS in all honesty I read the article but the pictures were playing tricks with my mind “I might have skipped that dressup party part”! So dressing up to him means being like a girl! Yho! This is waaay overboard! Oh just remembered what he said about growing up with women{Hmm} and that he admired gram’s fashion sense{AlreadydownwithCuriousity}! And the pose? p’out? * Nnete ha e tswe tu?

  17. Zida on Thu, 10th Feb 2011 11:54 pm

    Kwaaaa @ Real Divo.

There’s something about Marque’s wardrobe selections that leaves a lot to be desired. Think frustrated drag queen standing in front of her closet trying to figure out what she is going to wear on her first stint at that club. Girl, God knows your heart but you just confuse the hell out of the rest of us with your choices at times. But who ever said that being Felipe Mazibuko’s muse was ever easy. You a step away from rocking Nino Brown’s body huffing little number. Actually, I think your outfits come straight from the fabulous desk of Andre Leon Tally.

  18. Brown Shuga on Thu, 10th Feb 2011 11:56 pm

Amen Maverick. And his response to the question about where he buys the bags? Wow!

I will look twice at my outfit before going out… And check if there is some razzzmatazz too it heheh.

Sizzle, I put up the ‘Terrence Howard” pic, don’t knoow if Maque has seen it before.

Noww lemme go, am starting to sound like spokesperson. Hehe

Degorgeous1 is the future! Hahahaha! His dress sense is out of this world! When I first met him 2years ago I was terrified of him! Had dreads, coloured contact lenses and dressed differently than any person I’d ever seen! He looked like a lion sort of! Bt when I got to know him and what he’s about a lot of things made sense! Has a huge personality that compliments his dress sense! One of a kind! We can’t all be the same fashion forward or backwards only he can pull off his look and I don’t think he’s trying to be a trendsetter or anything! How you dress is an extension of your personality and not every1 is bold enough to express themselves bt makig bold statements and defy the norm! Big ups to him! Avant Garde at its best

“Terrence Howard is holding $34,000 alligator and diamond-encrusted European-inspired Borsa evening bag by Ralph Barbero Sicily”

Granted it was in 2006 but I was trying to prove that it was his bag. I still maintain though that no man should be carrying a clutch, gay or not. hehehe.

I like Mr DeGorgeous. I expected him to have this kinda prespective and stance on his style. I wanna be this crazy but i have this conservative blanket that wont allow me to go as wild with fashion as i really wanna be, they day i break out i wont go back.

The first time I met MDG I was so terrified but I have to admit I have never met anyone who doesn’t give a clutch about what people think about. What we can get out of this interview besides the clutch is accept no one’s definition of your life & style, define yourself. If you remove the clutch, the gold skirt & the leggings you can get something out of this post.

Funny as this may sound but this is one of the interviews that had to ask myself this question – Am I really living my life or am I constantly looking for approval for others? ** Introspection **

On the best dressed I definitely agree with him, but as for my DR Rebecca vele Modimo otlo go trapa!!!! The only thing she always manages to get wrong is her shoe size.

@BS LOL I still remember the shock on your face when you first saw him with a clutch #Kodakmoment

    2. “dare to splash a little razzmatazz in your outfit ”
    3. “mix and match them with everything (including that 2 metre piece of material you have no idea what you’re going to do with). ”

@LadyM the sandals on the last picture are available at Luella stores it’s a David Tlale’s limited collection and Lindiwe’s dress is the work of Kluk .

@Makgotso the dress that Ms Dana wore at the Metros is a work of Clive Rundle, those who appreciate arts and design will know what a genius that man is, so stick to your retail lane.

It looks like I have to run ABET classes on SA fashion, Haute couture(High Fashion) and Prêt-a Porter (Ready to wear) **side eyes BS**

Why should we listen to what the majority has to say?
people are to much like sheep (aka Sheep Syndrome), the see what everyone does, and follow’s it.
Maque is one of the few who is not afraid of who he is,
and he is comfortable in his own skin.
The majority says that a clutch is for woman? why is that?
    Who made that rule??

Throughout history men wore long wigs, dresses, frilly socks and shoes with heels… Why was it ok then? because thats what the Majority did! everyone should be themselves! be a leader, not a follower! #ThatsAll

@Honephly be more open minded! there is no reason to trash people about who they are!
a manbag was also WTF? a few years back, and now it’s ok!
same with pink shirts. i can go on and on with this list…….

This is just so refreshing and so very Fierce. Thank Goodness that there are still people brave enough to just be who they are and not who or what a very plastic individual like Joan Rivers believes we should all be…. Love it love it!!!

  65. HoneyPhly on Fri, 11th Feb 2011 3:35 pm

and why is he wearing leggings? aai mara neh, had it been mablerh in that outfit, yol would have slaughtered him. honestly, I see nothing fascinating here. that’s my… as JC bloggers keep saying “OPINION”

  66. Lela on Fri, 11th Feb 2011 4:02 pm

Lol @retail lane. Tjo let me keep quiet and stick to my china city lane.

  67. MaliB on Sat, 12th Feb 2011 2:34 pm

    Well… LOL!!

I will say that I admire the guy’s THICK skin and going for what he wants but… Some things are really made for women and they look awkward when worn by a man! I read the whole thing and I kinda understand his psyche but sometimes the outfits translate to a drag queen. I’m not tryna be mean. That man clutch or mutch or whatever is a no-no! There’s not even a tinge of masculinity in it – even if it did, it’d still be a no-no.

I totally love how some people can make feel straight, lol, coz I’d never wear the things I saw him wearing. Again, I’m not attacking him…just his choices of the clothes he actually wear. Wow, gold leggings?? Really? And a wrap-whatwhat? Tltltltltl!! I can’t deal!!

U people cracked me up… “Stay in ur retail lane”, “Herbex Hlasel’ Amathambo” and “Dance Your Bones Off”… I’m offiaclly dead!! LOL!!

This was a good interview Lelo B.You have asked the big brilliant questions kuMa’Q.
But: uMa’Q guys is Homo. so why would we expect him to change his views about what he thinks “suites men and what doesn’t”?Certain clothes are just very feminine, and theres nothing we can change about that….he needs to learn that too ;) But then again, theres no point in arguing with Homosexuals who make clothes for People; because they have their different view of whats suitable for the general public (gender)! ;D

  70. H2G on Wed, 15th Feb 2012 2:36 pm

I don’t have a problem with people wearing whatever (even what most people in the society don’t really approve of)they think is right for them. But I dislike it when Gay people come-up with new designs and confidently say “they represent Men(clothing)” thats bull sh$%t,because they represent their Gay community *No-HomeO4Beer tendencies*
