Who Should Host This Year’s SAMAs?

Preparations for the 17th edition of the annual South African Music Awards are in progress and in May 2011, we will experience what the organisers always call the “biggest music showcase of the year”.

As always, I am looking forward to this event, it is certainly one of the most talked about events in the country… For that one night we ALL sit down and tune in to SABC 1! The outfits, the host, the drama, the winners… and all this after we have fought about how undeserving the nominees were.

I am certain we will be getting a new host this year and when their twitter account asked this “who should be host” question a couple of months ago, my suggestion was Comedian, Ndumiso Lindi. In my mind he would do such a brilliant job of this… He’s fresh, talented, I love his voice, he’s damn funny, and doesn’t take himself seriously. I would love for him to be given this opportunity because I just feel the world needs to know him.
BUT this morning, as I was discussing this with EricSayz, a thought crossed my mind… why can’t we have a woman for a change? If my memory serves me right, we’ve had Pabi Moloi but she was co-hosting with Tshepo Maseko aka Parsons in Isidingo… Anyone remember this or am I confused?

Anyway, I have decided that I would like to see a woman hosting the show… I don’t know who but it has to be a woman! They could look from people like Anele, Dineo Ranaka (she gets my vote) and eish… actually, who are the women making moves in entertainment?

When Eric and I talked about it, he said that the woman has to be HOTT and TALENTED.

My questions:

  • Who do you think should host the SAMAs 2011?
  • Man or Woman or doesn’t it matter?
  • Do they have to be hott or just talented?
  • Are there minimum requirements for one to be a “perfect host” in our eyes?

I may not know who I would like to see up there but I definitely know it’s not the gorgeous Trevor Noah. Besides, imagine the Cell C CEO hosting the MTN Music Awards – Not gonna happen!

Quick SAMA Facts:

  • Entries must have been released between November 28th 2009 – November 30th, 2010.
  • The entrant must be a South African entity and own at leasts 50% of the master recording contained in the entry.
  • There are 68 Categories at SAMA 17
  • Record Of The Year is the only category decided by public voting
  • The record companies cannot directly enter product into the ‘Top 5’ categories, namely: Female Artist of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, Duo or Group of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and Album of the Year. To be eligible for entry into the ‘Top 5’ categories, the album would have to be nominated within its genre category.

    Lerato is good, I agree : they need a big name to pull the crowd plus her fame is also coz of DSTV show = Not gonna happen.

    How about it be musicians or acors who can sing and dance? I was watching the Soul Train awards late last year on BET and Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson did such a good job. They even had a battle sequence where they danced, with a crew, to the years biggest hits, liek Whip my Hair and Bad Boy for Taraji and Teach Me How to Dougie and Deuces for Terrence. It was fun and those awards were alive.

    Can’t we incorporate that? I’m sick of comedians. Sorry but I’m over it.

    I think Bonang can host together with some guy who can dance… Do we have such?

    A femalwe with a sense of humour will do for me, abd top of the list ke Tumi (the one who is always is with bo David Kau). But he humour is too one dimensional, she does the whole engrish thing, “polotical” lingon too much it can be annoying.
