Ooh, We’re So Sensitive!
March 28, 2011 by Brown Shuga
*SIGH*
This year nje… it’s this after that…
So… an Indian soccer player is red-carded (I didn’t even know we had Indian soccer players) and that player is named “Moemish Of The Week” on Soccer Zone… Tshepo Mabona, who replaced the controversial Walter Mokoena as the show’s host makes a comment “This player should go for an early shower and have a curry.”
Indians complained to the SABC that not all of them eat curry… and now Tshepo’s been taken off air. Tshepo Tweeted:

and

Hayi… looks like we are fast approaching an era where TV Shows will just have videos, no presenters, and newspapers will have just pictures no writers. Let’s say the soccer player was Xhosa, would Xhosas all over have been offended if Tshepo had said “This player should go for an early shower and have umngqusho”?
Are we a sensitive nation or is this all part of getting to know and understand one another? Kanti how long is this gonna go on for coz it’s not like we’ve just started living together, we’ve ALL been in this country forever…. I’m a little lost.

ThatoM on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 1:18 am

Hai ppl really need to take a chill pill. Can they just sit their asses down and rotate already? Everything is racism racism kanti? Aowa
Thuli on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 1:22 am
Well… In that case, we’ll just have presenters who look like they are programmed. It appears that we are too sensitive and I have no idea why Tshepo had to be taken off air… They should’ve just made him apologise and let the show go on as if nothing happened. Haa suka maan.
By the way, I’m first. Lol
Thuli on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 1:23 am
NOT!!! *side eye to the readers before me, you guys suck*
Sive-N on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 1:27 am
Oh really… Indians must take a chill pill, what was he doinng first place at a soccer field…where was a spice shop? They should find the highest cliff and jump off or just invent a new range of hot spices like really they like attention…last year we celebrated 150 years of them in South Africa, fuck that we have been here for decades nxa*flicks fake indian weave*
Thapelo24 on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 1:32 am
I didn’t know indians can play soccer……….Majority of the indian people have no sense of humour, they are too sensitive, they take themselves too seriously…. How can someone be offended by something like that? And he didn’t even say all indian people eat curry, He said that player must go eat curry… And whats wrong with eating curry anyways?, we all know that indians lover their halaal curry mos

Dark8lord on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 2:32 am
I believe Indians LOOVE complaining PERIOD. they’ll find sumthng to complain about. In grade 11 and 12 I had 2 indians in my class who lived to complain, from not enough marks and when playing a game outside ul hear them sulk “Its fine, pick the indians last”. Then the gay indian became a Head Boy and became a drama queen, he would send girls to time out for wearing wrong-colour panty-hose and “untidy” appearances. Then he’d complain when they wait for him after school to moer him. He thought he owned the school. I remember he also got shoved headfirst into a dirt bin by a group of coloured boys because he got there acting all that and telling them to get to class. People hate complainers, and Indians love complaining and sulking.
FunkyFK on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 3:55 am
We are now being petty mara yazi. It is not like he said the indian player must stop using water in place of itoilet paper.
I find that ALL of us are now finding something to complain about. Be black, white, green, yellow – all of us. We are so uptight, touch is the move. Like we are waiting for other tribes, races to step on our toes.
Katlego.SA on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 5:11 am
Nothing wrong at all with Tshepo Mabona’s comments. Curry is food that most Indians enjoy. Sabc was way too
hush. I think if it wasn’t for that Kuli Roberts issue SABC wouldn’t have acted this way.
Unfortunately South Africa is very sensitive when coming to tribes. You can joke about anything but not other tribes.
Good thing you made the Xhosa example. Whole lot of peo
ple would have been offended buy such utterance too.
With my previous experiences, Zulus and Xhosa tend to be more offended too easily than any other tribes.
Let’s laugh at ourselves a bit guys…
MashDiva on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 6:44 am
Bathong! Ppl need 2 put their panties on and chill! I dnt blv Tshepo was malicious abt that, the SABCs just probably looking for a reason to get rid off him. *Offtopic: Just Curious is bauss strusbob!
Zida on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 7:19 am
I think we blow things out of proportion and I think people just want attention nje qha, not because they are offended.
What gets to me even more is the hypocrisy. Mpho Maboi said something about this situation on Twitter yesterday. She said we need to laugh at ourselves more. Which makes sense. But a few tweets later somebody said something about Schuster movies and she was the same person who said she doesn’t like his movies because they are racist. I agree Schuster’s humour is not my cup of tea, but isn’t he turning stereotypes into laughter so we can laugh at ourselves. Andaki ke mina.
And I was also totally pissed of at another personality. She was going on and on about how we knew already Bafana Bafana would not win so why are we complaining. Then as soon as Killer scored the goal, she was she same person making a huge hoopla about it. Bish, make comments about the ramp and that that husband of yours who left you. Nxa.

I think katlego.SA is right about zulus and xhosas being sensitive too, they are quick to make jokes about limpopo folk being witches, but when the tables are turned they get emotional, like WTF?
lazyswag on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 8:42 am
DeathBy: “…. not all of them eat curry” i find it sad that we want to be a united rainbow nation yet we still choose to be ignorant and pretentious….if a little joke or comment about our race offends people then we,as Suth Africans have got a long way to go

Miss H on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 9:20 am
Its not a racist comment, nut it is offensive. I wouldn’t be to happy if a white, Indian or coloured guy said “This player should go for an early shower and have a pap.”
Is it enough to get him off air. No! but he must apologize.
Nalizo on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 9:26 am
I think the SABC or the BCC need to review their code of ethics to allow a bit of flexibility.
Would it have made a difference if Tshepo said: Have a break, have a Kit Kat?
Andazi maybe we are a bit insensitive for not seeing a big deal out of Tshepo’s statement.I still say taking him off air is a bit too harsh.
MissAN on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 9:31 am
@ Miss H… u summed it well for me… It is not racist but offensive… *eats a samoosa*
Buhlebonga on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 9:32 am
Open any Durban newspaper in the ‘Letters to the Editor” and you will see a bunch of complaints from South African’s of Indian descent. From how expensive food has become (a fact) to how they cannot fish anymore and that they do not understand why their tax money must pay for the Zulu king (how ironic since they LIVE in KZN)
Then the one which made me roll about was this one guy who always writes to The Mercury, Daily News and even the Sunday Tribune that he doesn’t understand why the DA poster only has three race groups (white, coloured and black) and why there is no Indian person on the poster. SMH
We need to REALLY look into what racism and hate speech are.
Racism is the belief that race is a primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. …
AND
hate speech is term for speech intended to degrade, intimidate, or incite violence or prejudicial action against someone based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, or disability. The term covers written as well as oral communication.
I don’t think Tshepo is guilty of any of the above. We need to grow tough skins and frkn grow the eff up! This is so played out now.

Kiki on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 9:49 am
This is nonsense. Why are people being dramatic like this over nothing? Hai no man. #TeamTshepoMabona these Indians can eat more Curry for all I care. If they are Curry Free for real then what’s with this drama? Isn’t Curry their stable food vele? SMH

Brown Shuga on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 9:50 am
With everything said, I agree with Popeye though, the statement is not racist but the “platform” is a problem and Tshepo should’ve known better.
Remember Walter was also suspended just for saying Santana should drop Mbazo lol…
mamamia on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 9:53 am
But then if the shoe fits why should one take offence, if your tribe/culture/race is known or stereotyped by certain identifying factors why must you take offence. We not talking derogatory stereotypes but honestly Indians are know for curry and spices (we learned that in History for goodness sake) what is wrong with that!!
Comedians have been know to make far more insulting comments about Indians than what Tshepo said, but then again Tshepo is not a comedian.
SMH hopelessly.

Litoh Manyoko Scholes on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 10:52 am
In this country we have people who regard themselves towards us as not Africans mostly, yet they go mad when they are being treated as such. Its a shame that SABC just jump to react in their favour.Through Africans at heart don’t just take things to heart.
Miss H on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 10:57 am
Guys I think we are being a tad bit insesitive. First by being surprised that there is an Indian player in the squad, and also calling them amakula (it is a derogatory term). Ad its true not all Indians like eating curry, the same way not all black people eat pap.
And yes we should learn to laugh at ourselves, and not take ourselves to seriously. But we must also remember to give out, only what we can take.
Lex on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 10:59 am
Just like Tshepo,I also don’t know what a racist comment is anymore. Ppl are being over sensitive vir kak while they should be focusing their energy on important things!

We are all racist, especially behind closed doors in our homes. but this was an overreaction. even the indians at work joke about eating curry. yoh and joburg indians dont like the durban ones very much.
mamamia on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 11:34 am
@Miss H,
honestly minna i didn’t know that calling indians amakula was offensive, i thought it was the black equilavent of the english name Indian, i’m surprised when i’m talking and saying makula, people will shush me and act like i just swore at someone. I thought the offensive psuedo-English term Koolie was the equilavent of Darkie or Jap or kwerekere. So how do we refer to indians in vernac?
mamamia on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 11:41 am
I think the other non-white groups of our country have had enough of blacks, abo darkie monopolising the African heritage. If it’s not a black government ‘ruining’ things then it’s black forums, black economic empowerment, blacks only comedy shows, black billionares, black miners, black presenters, black outs, black plague, black eyes, and so on and so forth. I think we blacks must just sit our black arses down, shut up and give other non-whites a chance. Ke tlareng!!!

SihleMlambo on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 12:01 pm
We are one hell of a special nation, shame man, what’s so racist about saying Indians eat curry, hell, we all eat curry, the conotations of what Tshepo is saying are not racist at all, it seems that the SABC believes that their viewers are robots who do not wanna chuckle at the odd “joke” as it were, curry is curry is curry, I have never seen an Indian man in a fight with a man of other race because the other said he eats curry, never ever!
mamamia on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 12:01 pm
@MissAn no i don’t get offended because i know i’m not a kaffir. But the question still remains, what do we call indians in our black languages? – it was an honest question.

Bathong, how is telling someone to take a shower and eat racist?huh..offensive maybe, mara its a stereotype and theres always some truth to all of them. Most indians eat curry hawu, silwelani? People need to just quit being so anal and laugh a little.
MissAN on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 12:11 pm
@ Mamamia…but most black people will be offended if someone calls them a kaffir,if you look at where the word originates it simply means a non-beliver,those that are not Muslims…
SO technically speaking, there are Kaffirs in the Indian community and there are some “non-Kaffirs” in the black community cos they are Muslim BUT because of the connotations the word has,its demeaning and derogatory… You might not have a problem, but I sure will if someone calls me a kaffir though by the sense of the word I am a kaffir, cos I am not Muslim…
BuhleBonga & Miss-H have answered you…
Miss_Tshidi on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 12:13 pm
@mamamia.i fully agree with you..
I imagine south Africa as a mother who has to deal with sibling rivalry
1st born= all the non blacks
2nd = blacks
For a while the 1st born had everything they wanted and BUT now, since the 2nd born has come out of puberty they experience some degree of jealousy or competition towards the 2nd born.!!! Hehehehhee
That’s why when the 2nd born does sumthang that could have either been intentional or not towards the 1st born, the 2nd born makes sure that he complains about it LOUDLY! and makes sure that he even gets the relatives (media) involved and you know mos, what happens when the relatives get involved…
Imagine how poor Leon Schuster would have been if Black people complained about how he makes fun of our accent” …SMH

MissAN on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 12:13 pm

Miss H on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 12:19 pm
NO @missAN we wouldn’t laugh it. It’s plain offensive. I know, I would be one those people are coming down hard on that white presenter. I don’t think Tshepo was being malicious, but fact of the matter what he said was offensive. Especially since he is in the “spotlight”.

@ Enhle… lone soldiers don’t make it to the headline, its the “US,WE,MAJORITY” that make headlines like this… Injure one Injure all..Even if you don’t mind and perhaps the Indian player in question, the papers will say Black people angry at the commentators comment…
Cleo04patra on Mon, 28th Mar 2011 12:44 pm
Wuuuuh!!! Indians and complaining, where do i start?? Remember the Mbongeni Ngema story?? They can never take a fucking joke! Anyway it’s not necessarily fair to blame them. Hai, we must stop pretending to be naive. Us black people like to pretend we are not prejudiced but let’s provide a more appropriately framed alternate example and see if we like it if the shoe is on the other foot:
Lets imagine a situation in the United States, were Blacks are a minority and whose ancestors were brought from Africa to labour on cotton plantations (not unlike Indian indentured labourers brought to work on sugar plantations). Imagine now a field / sport in which Blacks are not usually represented… swimming for instance. Imagine now a black swimmer is disqualified in the opening events and the White male commentator (who comes from a group that is well represented in that particular sport) says: ” This swimmer needs to go home for a shower and have a tub of fried chicken and grits”. This comment about fried chicken may mean nothing elsewhere, but in the US it’s a mocking reference to his African-American heritage. Thus, its the intention of the commentator to highlight the swimmers race and point to him being out of place in a swimming event. Now let’s imagine a white blogger writing about this “African” ( not an African-American) swimmer who was disqualified and stating as an aside, that she didnt even know Africans could swim. I think we should all do a practice run trying to justify the statements of the hypothetical white commentor & the blogger… Oooooh…. Sounds like a fun exercise.
