So Proud Of Hastings :-)

March 15, 2011 by

I felt like such a proud mommy when I got an sms from one of our writers, Hastings Moeng telling me about his graduation. My son won’t be too happy with him stealing that feeling & moment heheh.

Well, Hastings, whose blog entries can be read HERE graduated with a Journalism Degree from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and is ready to take on the world.

I asked Hastings a few questions about his graduation and here’s what he had to say :

Why journalism?

I have always been in the loop  with what’s going on and getting the nitty gritties has always  been my activity of choice since an early age. Fast-forward to my high school days, I was one of those anti sport smart pants…but debate and public speaking were my happy hunting grounds. I never bought i-Kota (bunny chow) so I could afford, at least, two magazines, Sunday World and Sunday Sun every week. Umgosi is engraved on my DNA. So it didn’t come as a shock when I ditched doing Auditing at Wits for a Journalism degree at UJ. Let’s just say, when you know yourself as well as I do, you just naturally know whats for you and what’s not.

Dream Job?

What’s a dream job? Hehehe…well let’s just say what I know for sure is that I want to thrive in whatever I do. The thing I admire the most  about journalism is the  versatility so expect to read my work in print media the same way you’re gonna hear my voice and see my face in broadcast media. With the full-time studies out of the way, I’m finally able to engage with the decision-makers. I also intend  to be amongst the most educated journos in SA, thats why I’m currently doing an HR diploma through distance learning. Keep reading JC for all the developments.

5 yrs from now?

I’d love to have a talk-show. Nothing too hectic but it must reflect my intelligence. The thing is, my fierce intellectual capacity is one of my strongest traits and I’d like to exploit that in the best way possible. I have a lot coming up…the future  is so bright I feel guilty.

Role models in media?

I look up to different people for different  reasons. But I’ve always looked up to Nomakula Roberts. She’s a rebel and we’ve all come to cherish her madness, or at least I do.

Blogging while studying?

Joining JC is the best mistake I’ve ever made and I wouldn’t replace it for anything. JC threw me in the deep end of the mainstream media, giving me first hand experience, exposure and contacts that would take typically years of ass-kissing for most assiduous individuals. I’m yet to meet any other 21 year old out there who can match my black book. But I have to thank BS for making it all happen. When I joined, I knew JC would be fun but no idea it would be as empowering.

(Hastings with Masechaba, who graduated with Corp Comm honors a few days before him. )

Attending all the events vs Studying?

Fortunately for me, I mastered the art of managing my time from an early age. It also comes down to discipline… I never went out on Fridays when every Thandie, Dikeledi and Herriot  are out and about. If ever I did, I had to attack the books regardless  of the time I came back. I also took my school bag everywhere, studied on the road during odd hours and never missed a single lecture. Having been an exceptional student all my life, I’ve always had control over my academics. Hence I didn’t tell BS whenever I had tests because I knew she wouldn’t allow me to attend events. Besides JC  I had many other things going on but I still managed to complete in record time.

______________________________________________________________________________________

Congratulations Hastings, I’m sure I speak for all the JC bloggers when I say we are proud of your achievement :-) We’ll be here to support your future dreams, however we can.  Stay humble nana… now the real hard work begins. There’s a lot of negativity about journalism out there… here’s to hoping you’ll do what you can to try elevate it and not to conform to the standards we witness out there.

Signed: Proud Mommy, BS

On a more serious note: Congratulations Hastings! I think its pretty clear that journalism isn’t all as glam as JC makes it out to be…lol. When things get hectic (as in the Kuli saga),remember who you are and why you doing what you do,and you’ll be fine.

Big up to you BS for seeing his potential and throwing him in the deep end.
