Marawa’s Top 5 Favourite DVDs

April 20, 2011 by

Out of curiosity, I asked one of my favourite people in the world and Just Curious’ number 1 silent blogger & fan (he reads everything!!) Robert Marawa to give us a list of his Top 5 Favourite DVD’s. In his own words, unedited, I present to you:

Robert Marawa’s Top 5 Favourite DVDs

No.5- The Latham Comedy Collection

** Comedy is something that I have always enjoyed through the years as I have a lot of respect for people who have the artistic gift of telling jokes in front of thousands of people in a LIVE environment and doing so for a minimum of an hour. This is a 4-disc Collector’s Edition that has the Original Kings of Comedy, The Queens of Comedy, Latham Entertainment Presents and a Bonus Disc. Having household names like abo Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, the late Bernie Mac, Monique etc is enough to make you forget about football politics.

No.4- The Great Debaters

** When you put together two Academy Award winners then surely you are in for a good thing. But then here you’re talking about Denzel Washington and Forest Whitaker taking on roles that are very moving and extremely powerful. I love debate and the ability to put a point forward and back it up with facts is what Denzel inspires in his debate team and the effective use of the power of words comes through brilliantly here! I’ve watched it over eight times and it keeps getting better every time, if such a thing exists.

No.3- Tyler Perry Movies

** I never thought that anyone would come in so suddenly and so forcefully and make us quickly forget that there ever was a Spike Lee, like Tyler Perry has done. I have all his DVD’s from day one. Titles like Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea’s Family Reunion, Daddy’s Little Girls, Why did I get Married 1&2, Meet the Browns, The Family that Preys and Madea Goes to Jail, etc etc etc…… most of these movies deal with real life situations and especially issues that touch on the lives and struggles and achievements of black people. You laugh, you get angry and I’ve seen people even cry when watching these movies. I’m NOT into sci-fi and fantasy stuff.

No.2- Asinamali

** Many, many, many years ago I used to have a VHS copy of this stage play and it became a victim of “affirmative shopping” which really made me so angry because I really and truly loved that production. I still believe that this is one of Mbongeni Ngema’s best piece of work EVER!!! This stage play was originally filmed live at the Market Theatre and the acting was top class. Can you imagine my excitement when my DVD supplier phoned me last year to tell me that he has a DVD copy of the play!! I rushed to get it immediately!! Some of the original actors are still there with one or two new faces and wow….. it’s about the rent boycott of 1983 in Lamontville Township.

No.1- You’re The Inspiration- The Music of David Foster& Friends

** Music and I are very good and close friends and 90% of my collection is music inspired and music driven especially LIVE music performed on stage. Now David Foster has discovered and worked with the best artists in the world and also the most successful ones as well. Here you have live performances from the likes of Eric Benet, Andrea Bocelli, Michael Buble, Babyface, Josh Groban, Celine Dion, Brian McKnight, Kenny G and so on!! What a musical journey and he’s just released a new DVD which is almost like a part two of this one entitled; Hit Man Returns, David Foster and Friends. The best…..

Hope you enjoyed my Top 5 and an insight of what makes me sit up and pay attention.

    Nod Nod Nod on:

all 5, although my rating order would have been slightly different…Tyler being 5,The Great Debators being top on list and the rest fitting in between.

Double NOD on Mr Marawa being a J.C patron, just confirms his taste for the finer things in life lol

Great debaters got me dancing kwasakwasa in circle around my dictionary…*awesome play..awesome dialogue and brilliant research*

As For Mr Foster all I can say is *jeso*! (His music is beyond-on-point)

It’s really nice to see the othe side of Robert. I think he’s really talented at what he does and down to earth, hard to believe he’s Vanessa’s brother, they seem like polar opposites O_o… He’s done really well for himself! Big up Robert u’ve come a long way since Simunyeeeeee ohh we R one!

  4. softnfree on Wed, 20th Apr 2011 12:48 am

Cishe ngamhleba. It’s good you warned us that he reads JC. Kwaaaa.

Anyway, I love his Top 5. I totally enjoyed The Great Debators. Oh and that sexy Denzel. As for Forest, that wonk alone scares me.

And I have both David Foster DVD’s. Every aspiring musician needs to watch those shows. What I love about them is that he let’s his guests shine, even though he is the man behind those legendary hits.

Tyler Perry has done very well. There is definitely a huge market for his work. I appreciate that. I have enjoyed some of his work.

Love your selection Madluphuthu. I’ll visit some time to enjoy with you. *winks*

  6. Nalizo on Wed, 20th Apr 2011 12:52 am

    Lol @ cishe ngamhle,same here.Thanks for the warning,much appreciated.

  7. softnfree on Wed, 20th Apr 2011 1:01 am

It’s good you warned us that he reads JC. !!!

Come to think of it that was a ‘Silent warning’

I just love him shem, though at times the past tense seems to jog a delayed response in me , as I honestly struggle to see him and not recall the Tsholo saga’

I love how he has lost weight and is looking good.

I love his passion about what he does (work wise) and how he does it.

I love how he has cleaned up nicely

And mostly his subliminal confidence slash acceptable stance of arrogance.

And I love how each time I visualize Tsholo’s post-brutally-dumbed Marawa-face dims as she glances at the pre-dwarf-Mashishi and wonders with a haunted face ”damn gal surely is definitely the rejected episode of Nip & tuck”

    Shem…JBS sweetness!!

I love Robert Marawa shem, I’d catch a grenade for him, ignore all the transnet adverts and stand infront of a train for Marawa. Tjo I met/saw him once at the SABC Sea Point studios in Cape Town. I went to pick up tickets I had won for a soccer match. Oh what a man *drools*
Most importantly I am big fan of his work, his knowledge of sport is beyond impressive.

  13. soul sista on Wed, 20th Apr 2011 7:01 am

“… I’d ignore all the transnet adverts and stand infront of a train for Marawa.” Kwaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, I’m dead & buried = ancestor

Great choice from a great man, I have The Great Debaters DVD but I never finished it, it bored me to the core (I hate serious stuff). And then there was Tyler’s work, siyavuma to everything that has Mr Perry on it, I’v collected almost everything including plays.

As for being a JC reader I agree with @lwandie you’ve got a taste for finer things in life, hahahahaha

    Simunyeeee ooh we are 1!!

  15. SilentBloggar on Wed, 20th Apr 2011 7:32 am

@ShorT David Foster is one of the finest music producers, the man behind Josh Groban’s music, produces for Andrea Boccelli and many other artists. I think he discovered Josh Groban if I’m not mistaken.

  16. FunkyFK on Wed, 20th Apr 2011 7:51 am

Wow, I like his choice – I have 3 of his five. The debaters looks serious for my liking. Im a laid back person and after working hard, I need something funny so I can relax. Asinamali, I would love to watch.
