Make Up & Beauty Tips To Know This Winter

June 6, 2011 by

As we all knowm winter comes with its dry weather and our skins become all dry, flaky, chapped and dull. Well you don’t have to let the winter strip off the smooth soft skin you’ve work hard for. Here are a few tips that can help you stay looking the same, 365 days all year long.

Just to share a little something I think people are not aware of out there! Your winter skin regimen should not be the same as the summer; this applies to the make-up as well. In winter one goes slightly lighter as one spends less time in the sun & is not exposed to the sun as much and therefore your skin will become much drier and you will need to feed it moisture and lots of water for it to stay healthy. The more richer creams you use for your skin, the better.

You still need to scrub your skin twice a week as usual, this helps to even out the surface of the skin leaving it soft smooth and ready for the perfect application of make-up.

Use a face wash but preferably a creamy cleanser which will create a rich foaming lather that washes away impurities, this helps attract moisture which is what your skin needs in winter.

Your moisturiser should also be very hydrating and creamy to provide rich lasting moisture that will leave your skin smooth and perfectly primed for make-up, the ones with  ingredients like barley extract, wheat germ extract, cholesterol, and linoleic acid help to immediately transform dry skin into beautifully hydrated skin.

The lip is an area where the skin gets very dry in winter, to avoid this you need to scrub your lips at least twice a week using your toothbrush, lip conditioners are loaded with Shea Butter and Vitamin E for relief from rough, chapped lips.

We all should change our foundations colour and texture in winter. Your skin goes a little lighter as it is not exposed to the sun much which may cause dull and dry looking skin so to help it stay healthy try using a cream finish foundation. Not only does it give moisture, it gives a great cover too with a slightly dewy finish. If you don’t like to cover a lot, go for the tinted moisturiser, it provides sheer to natural looking coverage.

Because I know that not everyone wants to look dewy, you should use loose powder instead of the pressed powder, the loose powder gives a soft and velvety matte finish look without leaving the skin too dry. This powder is perfect for setting make-up.

The eyes and blush can be kept matte as to avoid looking too shiny, sometimes cream eye shadows can crease a lot so keeping them matte is always the best idea. Use colours like browns, golds, greys, and for a more bold look use indigo, green, blues, and purple but remember matte is always best. Your all time classic black eyeliner on top and bottom is a must for this look and of coz finish this with great heavy mascara.

The in lips at the moment go matte and bold or go home, you do need a lip that makes a statement especially on lips that have been scrubbed, moisturised and well taken care of, use colours like your bright reds, bright oranges, your fuchsia pink or your dark berry colours.

Very NB: Be very careful of using a lip gloss over a very bright lip it changes the statement of being bold to cheap and tacky, it is safe to use on your dark purple colours though.

I did promise that I will reveal the trend that is loved by Iman and she carries it very well, the Smokey eye and bold lip.  The reason why it is safe to wear this look together in winter, is because we tend to wear a lot of clothes and usually the colours are your greys, your blacks and all earthy colours which can be a bit dull sometimes.

There’s nothing wrong with glamorising your eyes and then put ting on that very bold lipstick that will make a statement wherever you go. People should look at your beautiful made up face than clothes that are a tad boring. These are the different ways of wearing this glam look.

Please excuse the many comments, I have to keep scrolling up to read. My beauty buys: Olay tinted moisturiser(It contains Max-factor foundation in it already) Its light & goes on wonderfully.Avon blusher & bronzing pearls, swear by their blush & mascara. I find that with lip & eye-makeup I can wear any cheap old thing & it doesn’t react.I love deep indigo eyeliner! Used to do the whole Indian Kajal thing- it smudges ;-( Nothing beats Vaseline & Carmex on the lips. Wish someone would teach black women how to apply blush, yessus the things I see on campus. I love make-up I think it also loves me, lol. I’\d love to do some short course thingy on it! :-)

The only make-up I wear is an eye liner and lip gloss. My skin is very oily and prone to black heads so I feel that foundation or powder would worsen it. The only change I make for winter is that I stop using facewash and instead wash with unscented aquious (sp) cream or Epizome Ointment. Depend on how intense my skin is I either use Pond’s Anti Marks cream or Zinplex Treatment Gel.

    Interesting.

The only things i know about make-up is lipgloss, mascara, eyeliner… *hopeless*

Oh,& lots & lots of beauty sleep. We need it ladies, does wonders for the skin.

  18. Botshelo on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 9:54 am

I love make up and was applying it a lot until bubu said he prefers if i dont put it on daily. since then I have grown my eyebrows, they are not as full as i would love them to. but i love my natural look now. i also have dread locks so, i am all natural.

And since the eyebrows dont grow to be bushy, i want to trim them a bit

But on occasion I put on mascara, foundation to zhoosh up. I can put on eyeliner without tears, so i have given up on it.

My recent problem area is my chin. Eish, even now i have a fresh pimple, grew last night because yesterday it was not there and this morning….BHAM! in my face! :(

I simply belief that make up is cool but not everyday. And the people who love make up and put it on daily end up looking like a chocolate mouse, rich and very brown *SMH*

  19. Lela on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 10:03 am

I love make up shem but I keep it as natuaral as possible bu stcking to natural colours like gold eye shadow and smokey eyes. In winter i use liquid foundation, summer pressed powder. I use face wash, day cream and night cream from Johnson’s all the other ones I don’t trust cause I don’t have a skin problem so I want only mild things on my skin. I want a red lipstick though.

  20. GA on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 10:46 am

hm…im curious about make up…but this is hectic not mention it sounds like greek to me… but maybe if the the desire ever leads.
I use ponds in summer, bio oil in winter and that workd fine. And my new lipgloss friend, im loving that little thang, good for my lips for both seasons.

id like to try mascara and see if it will make a difference…it goes on the brows ne…all of them?…

I LOVE ANTM…and i love the crazy make up they usually do, and i find the crazy art students appealing with their crazy make up, wonder ill just come out of myself and just go wild…one day.

    Hello *Waving*

Been silent-blogging for a while and thought I should come out now. Awesome blogging site,i must say…learned a lot so far.

Make up! Eish, one of the topics that make me go mute since I am a bit clueless about it,mascara and eyeliner-that’s what I know. I feel like I need a degree to be a make-up application pro and look like these pretty women who look like they just walked out of a magazine cover. However,I started applying eyeline occasionally and now I put it on daily.:)

Mascara basadi: I have a hopeless case of eyelashes, soooo curly and I would like them to be less curly. I was adviced to get the artificial ones-jooo dia ntšhoša,i just see mam-Ruby when I think of them, so what mascara can I get 4 these fokoling eyelashes of mine??

  22. Vesa on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 11:25 am

Everyone wants red lipstic here,me too. *not one to be left behind*

Oh,& puhleaze ladies, tell others that ”drawing eyebrows” with an eyebrow pencil is soo not on. Ud look like a revived voodoo doll. Rather tweeze them & enhance their volume.

Gosh I am clueless about make-up like some people on JC *won’t mention names* I do however believe in Mac… Mina, can anyone tell me how do I get rid of chickenpox marks pronto? I had them recently around April and I am all scarred up!!! Tjerr… an I had great skin before this sheekenpox…Please guys,I do not believe in hiding the problem mara dealing with it…I am using the Tissue Oil soap and tissue oil,too slow for me.

@ Jahara… try threading!! The best, beats tweezing and waxing, eyebrows look natural and damn good.Think Kim K.

  26. J-Girl on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 12:22 pm

Yayyyy!! One of my fav topics!
I swear by Neutrogena two in 1 visibly clear wash/mask, the daily moisturiser and toner. In winter and summer, all my people I’ve recommended these products to have never looked back, truly amazing!
When it comes to my make up I have a variety of products I swear by,for the foundation I use the Elizabeth Arden flawless finish sponge on make up, great! Eyeliner I swear by Kangol but Mac also has a nice soft yet lasting eyeliners and mascaras!
When it comes to my lips Rimmel and Clinique do me best, Rimmel for color variety and boldness and Clinique for the gloss that moisturise well!!

Anyone know where to buy Pure unrefined shea butter? Would like to try it on my skin n hair, apparently it should be sold in Nigerian/West african shops, but I just don’t know where to start (maybe hillbrow)..
The skin on my outer lower legs gets sooo tight n dry in winter, tissue oil just didn’t cut it. I’ve now added extra virgin Olive oil (I use it on m hair as well) to my Nivea lotion, it’s worked like a charm. It just takes a bit longer to get absorbed, but I love it!! I use Baking soda to exfoliate my face, and sometimes body too. It always leaves my skin feeling smooth, and helps quickly get rid of any pimple scars, and reduce appearance of pores (I have oily skin).

  32. MissAN on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 2:11 pm

@ Toni… so I can use Baking soda on my chickenpox marks? How do you use it? Glycerin (sp) works very well in winter when mixed with Nivea lotion the original blue one.

@ Nerleee hopefully end of 2011 they will be gone…

  33. Mso on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 2:44 pm

I use Yardley Oatmeal Cleaser, Mask, Toner and Moisturiser. I used to have an uneven tone skin and it was oily in some part of it. I went to Clicks thinking what the hell am I gonna use. I closed my eyes pointed and WALA the Yardley Oatmeal (the yellow one) It worked. I now have perfect balance tone skin and its not oily anymore. I use Clinique bronzer and Revlon perfect matte foundation and blusher. Elizabeth Arden night cream and ruby red lipstick.

  34. Mso on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 2:45 pm

    K, thats Cleanser.

  35. Lehakoe on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 3:20 pm

yho askies MissAN. I got a serious acne attack last year and was left with spots all over my face. I went to skin renewal for laser therapy and it cost abt R500 per session depending on the number of shots you need. It’s not a once off thing so it’s usually recommended you go for about 4-7 treatments. Was to expensive to keep up. Dischem has Microdermabrasion and Low Level Laser Therapy for less than R300 so that’s a cheaper option.
The holy grail in skin serums has to be Clinique’s Even Better. Sells for R550, 30ml (rip off). But I promise it works! And never leave the house without sunscreen. I’ve amped up to Clarins spf50 on my face and Nivea spf30 on my body because I burn so easily and the marks will just get darker with sun exposure.

When I do put on make-up I use MAC studio sculpt concealer and top off with their studio fix powder +foundation. It looks really natural when done right- and I’m surprised when some people can’t even see it.

  36. MissAN on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 3:25 pm

@ Lehakoe…will try Clinique for now…. Thanks…Yeah,I swear by sunscreen, well before the sheekenpox. But I still use it. Yasmin,a pill,is good to balance the skin and for clear skin.

  37. Miranda on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 3:47 pm

    @Lehakoe. Thanx #taking notes#

I have questions though: did the laser therapy at least work?and where did u get it done?at a dermatologist? I had an acne attack feb-April this year and it left marks, so I have been using Neutrogena visibly clear 2 in 1 face wash and its spot/control/stress moisturiser, which are make an exponentially slow progress…and i just cnt dzeal,i was already thinking of seeing a dermatologist this month but i wasnt sure about it,plus i dont know where to start looking 4 one.

    2. U mentioned the dischem Microdermawhatwhat and clinque’s even better, can you maybe give an idea of how long they take to show results?

  38. Toni on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 3:50 pm

@MissAN, what baking soda does is it mechanically exfoliates to remove dead skin and allow whatever u use on your face to penetrate deeper and therefore work better. It’s a great way to maintain smooth skin, but obviously it won’t beat laser procedures, esp if your scars are severe. U can either add a little bit to your cleanser while washing your face, or you can use it on its own. Just put a little bit in a cup (a teaspoon or something), add a few drops of water to make a paste, apply to your face and GENTLY exfoliate using circular movements. Moisturise afterwards. If ur face stings abit, apply abit less pressure next time. If u do it at night, ur skin will get to recover thru the night.

  39. MissAN on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 3:55 pm

@ Toni… Thanks…ok,baking soda that you buy at Pick ‘n Pay neh? will buy, till I can afford laser, angeke ngishe ubuso neh?

    @Miranda…if you want a dermatologist,good one at Smal Stree,Lister Building Dr Mpofu…

  40. Toni on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 4:27 pm

@MissAN yeah Dr Mpofu is quite good!

  43. Toni on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 4:32 pm

  50. Bigmama on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 5:11 pm

@Lehakoe tell me which clarins do u use for ur face? It looks like we have the same problem. I have a very sensitive skin it burns easily. And it is also uneven. Hairline is gone.

  51. Jellytot on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 5:17 pm

Im using black opal for now but its taking its time. Keep on getting breakouts on my nose. Strange. Tried lo’real, ponds, yardley oatmeal but nothing works. Im starting to think moving back to jhb was not good for my skin. But this mpofu sounds like a miracle worker

  52. Jellytot on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 5:20 pm

Mpofu is still in Smal Str,next to McD,will try get the number. She is good, takes med aid at Smal mara cash at Morning side.

@bigmama ihairline icedwe yini manje? I didnt have problem skin until this pandemic ön my face, had great skin actually. Will try Envirön. Great product.

@ Nerlee and for that too… Makes skin yellow.

  55. Sweet-Ash on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 8:38 pm

Will have to try Tony’s Baking Soda to see if it works together with Zinplex of cause. When my skin prob is worse, I use Zinplex pills as well. They help balance one’s hormones and boost immune. Their treatment gel is light and doesn’t dry out skin. In terms of make up, I love yardley lip colour (it’s subtle).

  56. lwandie on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 8:40 pm

Yummy thread to come back home to….nice to know I’m not alone in the clueless zone.

I loved the winter looks, not sure about the red lipstick I’m just not bold like that.

This is too advanced for me , I need a program to start me from right down the basics….more like “this number nton nton brush is for this potion here” etc etc….lol I have a teachable spirit though.

  57. Sweet-Ash on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 8:45 pm

And oh, for my body, I mix Nivea (the navy blue 1) with Justine Tissue Oil; works wonders. For my feet I use Avon Foot Works Intensive Callus Cream.

Also ladies, hair needs as much attention as your face.

  58. Nerlee on Mon, 6th Jun 2011 9:27 pm

Ths red lipstick thng works 4 few very few people just like them fake eye lashes most people look scary with those thngs on. Mna olive oil products do my hair goodo and a 2drops of baby oil in my bathing water keep my skin soft through out winter.

  62. Toni on Tue, 7th Jun 2011 7:31 am

    @Lela, it’s Bicarbonate of Soda.

  63. Zam zam on Tue, 7th Jun 2011 8:48 am

Hey guys. Do any of u know of any good dermatologists in durban that take medical aid? Eish, my skin is pulling stunts and its really depressing especially since my mom is always picking on me coz of it. Plz help!

  64. Zam zam on Tue, 7th Jun 2011 9:02 am

    @ Lehakoe

Do these microderm laser treatments require u to pay cash? No medical aid? Phela I’m a student and worse I live @ home so I don’t even get pocket money.

Mina my problem started wen I used jonsons. Tjo that thing messed my skin UP! Then all of a sunday my skin started randomly breaking out. Now I have all these black marks on my face :(

So ya, if this laser thing will cost me cash, I guess I need to find me a sugar daddy to pay for it, eish kodwa even finding a decent sugar daddy will be a mission with this skin. Noma ke I must find a good dermatologist.

  65. Lehakoe on Tue, 7th Jun 2011 9:15 am

@ Miranda with the Clinique alone, I started seeing results after 4weeks- at which point I had to buy another bottle. The microdermabrasion, you can see results after 2 sessions, which are usually 3weeks apart. So generally after 2 months there will be a drastic improvement. And I hope you’ve treated the underlying problem because it’s no good doing any of this if your acne is still active.

@Bigmama, it’s Clarins sunscreen Care Milk-Lotion spray. I bought it at Woolworths. In the summer when the legs, arms, back and chest are on show I slather on some Nivea spf30. If I don’t then I am guaranteed to look like burnt roast in 2weeks. I think i-hairline is a different story though. Tell whoever does your hair to stop pulling your hair so tightly. In fact if you want it back lay off the braiding and weaving kancane.

  66. Lehakoe on Tue, 7th Jun 2011 9:28 am

@Zam zam, go to your doctor(regular gp) and ask them to prescribe something for you. I had to take anti-biotics(doxycyclin) and contraceptives(diane) for 3 months. That will tackle the acne alone- and your med aid will pay for them.

these laser stuff do little for the acne itself but are mostly for the marks left behind by the acne. And yes, you’ll have to pay cash. Most dermatologists only take cash. Askies. But in the mean time, just use sunscreen to prevent the marks getting any darker.

  67. Toni on Tue, 7th Jun 2011 9:47 am

@Lehakoe Do u apply sunscreen before or after lotion and moisturiser? What about when u apply make up?

  68. Lehakoe on Tue, 7th Jun 2011 10:15 am

Toni, the sunscreen is moisturising, so i use it alone.
When I was using a serum, like Clinique Even Better, then that would go first and the sunscreen after.
When applying make-up, it’s sunscreen first then make-up.

  69. Toni on Tue, 7th Jun 2011 12:46 pm

@Lehakoe thanks. Has any1 tried Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair? How much was it and did it work? Just Curious..

  70. lwandie on Tue, 7th Jun 2011 1:43 pm

@ Toni if you locate a source for the unrefined shear butter do holla,I tried and failed, none of the stuff on line looks genuine.

We might end up having to pulli an American Gangster stunt: cut out the middle man and go straight to the source!

  71. Toni on Tue, 7th Jun 2011 2:09 pm

@lwandie, lol!! Will do.. I have a friend who works up in one of the west african countries, will actually ask him about it. Until then, there’s always hillbrow, but eish! There’s so many shady characters there.
