Recap: I Want To Sing Gospel Episode 8

September 5, 2011 by

Yesterday I visited a church in Pretoria and it happened that Nozipho was ministering there and like I said before, one thing is for sure, the woman can sing.

Anyway since she is now out of the competition let me stick to talking about those who are still in the running for the moola and a foot in the door of the music industry. Yes it’s only a foot in the door because we never got to see much of Lungisani “inside” the door.

The contestants were this week again performing their favourite songs and the guest judges were Hlengiwe Mhlaba and Dr Rebecca Malope. As expected, Nhlakanipho and Malcolm received the highest number of votes for last week’s performances. I am so happy for both of them.

Nombulelo

She sang Njengebhadi, oh Nkosi ingoma kaMakhulu wam! She gave a very good rendition of the song and she looked stunning. Lindelani was not happy about her song choice, he said the song limited her and Hlengiwe mumbled something about being above and Ribs was her bubbly self and said Buli reminded her of herself in the 80s. I love Sis Ribs bantu.

Nontsikelelo

Ntsiki performed Dwala Lami and I think the song choice was not good for someone with her voice especially because we know it from a vocalist like Margaret. But she tried o! She also looked beautiful and Ribs said she was “well presentable” and she likes her. Mahlengi said she did very well. Mkhize advised on her pitch as usual and agreed that she looked good.

Samukelisiwe

She sang Rebecca’s Moya Wam, which may have been a bad idea especially when the Diva herself is there. She was krasing as always and she didn’t do any justice to the song. I’ve realized that abasukelwa labo sisi they are just not strong vocally compared to the guys. Hayike Sis’ Ribs gave her a standing ovation and complimented her and Mkhize joked that Ribs will gawula her rendition of the song and Hlengiwe said she touched her soul. Hayi mna I wasn’t moved at all.

Mvuselelo

Hayibo what’s with singing Rebecca songs? Mvuselelo sang Angingedwa. Eish I was turned off by the song choice but when he started singing I was a bit moved, I found myself singing and dancing along. Ribs gave him a “yes yes yes”. Mkhize said he was on another level and was happy with his interpretation of the song. Hlengiwe said he is a trend-setter. His fans were also happy and had a poster written “Vuvu Vuvuzela” which I think is their pet name for Mvuselelo.

While on the subject of Vuvuzela bethunana, I think y’all corrupted me last week with all the talk about Thabo’s vuvu which I didn’t see because I watch the show for the music and nothing else, now this week I also saw it. Hayi this stylist is naughty maan, why does he keep exposing impahla zabantu abadala? Be carefull little eyes what you see! *singing*

Nqobile

I couldn’t wait for the judging of this one considering that the mother was one of the judges. Nqobile sang UJesu Nobubele Nami and I will reserve my comments on him because all the hating on him may just influence it. But hayi Nqobile yena is just a guy good enough to sing at his church back home and travel with God’s Army. Lindelani spoke about his cracks as always and his mother said he was not impressed, sad maan. Rebecca agreed with Hlengiwe by saying Nqobile was too excited, heheheh hayi ke ngoku!

Thabani

He performed Hlengiwe’s Rock my Soul, oh I love this song and Hlengiwe sings it so well and Thabani rocked it and I was rockin along to it. Amazing performance he gave, he redeemed himself from last week’s flop. Hlengiwe was very happy and Mkhize said “Wow” and Ribs said it was star quality.

Nhlakanipho

My next favourite after my Mvuselelo, I just love Nhlakanipho! It’s like he’s in this with his heart. He sang Igama Lenkosi and I was just not happy with his song choice, I think it didn’t do him justice especially after last week’s amazing performance. He did however get Rebecca on her feet. Mkhize said he is natural, Hlengiwe said he has arrived and Ribs agreed. I think Nhlakanipho should win this competition though it seems Malcolm is big competition for him.

Malcolm

Ohhhh what do I say about a guy who chooses to sing Paradise Road?! Malcolm is just something else and he knows it. I just wanted to cry nje because his singing is such ministry full of anointing and all. Can they just crown him already? Mkhize was more than impressed and Hlengiwe told him the world is waiting for him and Ribs for once was “running out of words.” Malcolm is just winning!

Elimination

The contestants who received the lowest number of votes were Nqobile, Nombulelo and Ntsiki. Ntsiki was the first to go followed by Nqobile. I’m so sad for Nqobile maan I didn’t want him to leave so early; I still believed he would improve. I’m sure the ‘haters’ are happy now. The obvious thing about this competition is that it is going to be a tough one. These contestants can sing jong but I bet you Malcolm is taking this one.

To be honest, for some reason I will be voting for Nhlakanipho all the way.

Wooooow Siya – thanx 4 the recap! Uyashaya! I was still angry when I started reading – but I found maself giggling during the read – especially about the comments on presenter.. #hilarious

    Back 2 anger mode:
Dear Mr Mkhize, I was disturbed in the manner in which Nqobile was tricked into being in-the “singing-4-life” bottom category! I do not hav the stats about votes but I doubt if he had received the lowest votes or the 2nd lowest votes – he was just not in bottom 2 vote-wise!

I knew u were up 2 something the minute there were 6 ppl placed 2 sing 4 life – what 4 if the elimination was for 2 only?! I knew that that was the way 2 trap Nqobile into the mercy of the Kangaroo Court (studio) Judges – out-of-the safety of Judgement of voters….! And you guys (Judges) could not wait, u went 4 the kill the 1st time u had an opportunity, nxaaaaa!

If the bottom 3 was the only group 2 sing 4 life, Nqobile would not hav been there, you know that. Don’t get me wrong, I am glad that you listen nd take note of twitter/ blogs/ facebook feed-back (…coz I want u 2 listen 2 this one too), but the truth is that Nqobile’s followers don’t facebook/ skype/ bbm/ what’s-up/ blog, etc…. they give their input with sms nd tel – they vote! I feel they hav been let-down!

Lets talk about Nqobile’s journey – I think he is one Kideo that the industry is confused about how 2 treat him nd respond 2 his style of singing – this guy has this natural raw style/ “talent” kind-of singing – but when he got 2 Jozi – the Judges nd facebookerz confused him nd tricked him into loosing himself – they advised him that he was too rough, raw, unclear voice, blah blah blah, and prescribed all sorts of thingz that the voice coach decided 2 attend 2 (coz he reads e-tabloid too), and the kid was directed 2 loose himself and be this modern studio ‘singer’!

Now that he lost himself in the name of change/ improve/ respond to cyber-haterz, he is being blamed 4 ‘having lost that thing’ that make him “himself” , he is accussed of loosing that Nqobile—- yini Bawo nimenzani unyana? What do u want 4rm the boy???? Sis Hlengi’s comments about the boy were a direct contrast of Creselda’s comments the previous week! I trust Sis Hlengi coz she was talking 4rm the heart (…..yes, I don’t think Hlengi is the type that tweet shame, I doubt if she verstan nje xa kuthethwa ngale cyber-world).

Baba Mkhize, I therefore DEMAND that wildcard “mshika-shika” wakho to allow the opportunity 4 real fans zika Nqobile 2 do the REAL TALK, nd 2 bring him back 2 the competition – I know u r good in these thingz, u can make it happen… please do, please do!

  5. Madala on Mon, 5th Sep 2011 5:42 am

Shoooo – I now feel cleared (I hav been rehearsing this anger-let out since Tuesday’s recording)…. now, let me go back 2 the article –
I loved the show! I em not sure if its the fact that all were into Sis Ribs songz – yo bhoza la Sisi shame! Any1 ovula umlomo acule any Songz zika Ribs uyandibusisa shame….Viva Dr Sis Ribs!

Talkin about Divaz, I was glad some1 sang Deborah Fraser’s songz, alok uske wa silent a little bit shame – uphi kakade? What’s up with her nd her social life? She seems 2 have taken a short-break/ leave-of-absence – I think she learnt 4rm Zola 7 uba when heat gets hotter, hibernating is the way 2 go – ndiyamthandazisa shame!

Notwithstanding my comments above – I DO think that the judgement last nyt was the best (based on PURELY last nyt’s performance) – in the 6 who were fighting 4 life-line, the two who were eliminated were the weakest last nyt… it would have been a different statement if there were only 3 who were fighting 4 Judge’s mercy.

Nqobile bhuti uhambo lwakho alusothusanga, may yor voice rest in peace hay kabi mfowethu

Yhu i missed u aunty Ribs on my Tv screen shame, this woman jst makes my day bethuna.HALELUYAAAAAA,my GAUDD

  7. Madala on Mon, 5th Sep 2011 5:49 am

Unombulelo mhle shame, I wud hav bn sad if ebemkile! Samekelisiwe yintombana embana nje shame, but ethandekayo nd enelizwi elibusisayo – True, she did not do justice 2 the song, especially the song endiyithanda kangaka! In fact, I am not sure if comment that Sis Ribs made on the studio about Samu yilozing, nd bhuding the song was aired last nyt – but she did say so – she even said its no worries, she will get there (meaning ubebheda nje)! I think the version ka Mama ka Dr Ribs of uMoya Wam (refer 2 Sis Ribs DVD) is still better than what Samu did – but I still credit Samu 4 creativity and that thing nje ke shame! Dr Ribs said she sang the sng many times, but she could never have imagined the verssion. Sorry u guyz if u did not hear these comments, they were studio commnets, u must go there 4 the real fun….and NO, I em not trying 2 sell tickects, I em not getting commision kwa Tox Media, I just want u 2 hav fun….lol

I won’t comment about u Malcom except 4 the fact that uze nalo lonke ibandla lase Lenasia nkosi yam – plus with a “mlungu back-up supporter”, kuzo thengwa i airtime 4 every township dweller ku votwe 4 yena, more like they do in idols’ ish nkosi yam… hayi safa zi widow’s/ wife zabo Bret Kebble nd Glen Aglioti bawo wokulunga……

Sadly i missed the show coz i was working last night, but i must i am really impressed by this year’s contestants….tjo! those guys can sing….
Good news for me, i needed Nqobile and Ntsiki to go…followed by Samukelisiwe.

I think they should have 2 winners this year…like a couple of some sort (like Baboh and Sgwili), which ofcos will be Malcolm and Mvuselelo/ Malcolm and Nhlakanipho.

Wow these guys!!! Sorry ladies, you just do not do it for me!

  9. fongkong on Mon, 5th Sep 2011 7:42 am

Morning all! Yes, I am out of the closet, ke fila free jwang batho!! Anywho….watching umam’Hlengiwe muble her comments yesterday made me go tjo! She wasnt even opening her mouth! How does she sing batho? Phela she was even limiting usis’Ribs from expressing her excitement!

Hihihihiii & kwaaaaaaa @Madala! I feel you there, when you love someone,,,,,,felt the same when big brother cheated my Otono! But hae maan, Hlengiwe and Mkhize did well to trick/force Nqobile out, mos they are the ones who tricked/forced him in! I also smelled (sp) a rat when I saw the whole group in the bottom 6, said to myself, somebody is going votes or no votes!

But Nqobile le yena batho, he was somehow lowering the quality of the show! This year the competitors are lookers and they can sing, esp the guys!Last year, he’d have been fine, but this year, those men he was with, waaay out of his league!! #ke raafela!

  10. Ndalenhle on Mon, 5th Sep 2011 8:12 am

Nhlakanipho really sings from the heart and this guy uyamuzwa nje ukuthi unokholo ngaphakathi thats what i love about him, he’s being true to himself and his belief.
    Team#Nhlakanipho# all the way…

  11. Cya on Mon, 5th Sep 2011 8:52 am

Thanks guys I enjoy watching and doing a recap on the show.

    True Ndalenhle.
Whuuuuu Stroh I thought of you yesterday I’m sure bowujabule. Madala I share your sentiments on Nqobile, I just hate that they brought him this far to humiliate him and funny I also thought of the wild card yesterday. I don’t think I wanna do the Tuesday recordings because andinasifuba. Hayi maan makabuye uNqobile he can still improve yhini bawo.

Another thing I forgot to say is that Nozipho sings better than the three ladies combined, why bahambise yena kuqala vele?

  12. fongkong on Mon, 5th Sep 2011 8:58 am

Clearly some ears hear things! Nqobile? Nozipho? hayike!!

  14. Cya on Mon, 5th Sep 2011 9:04 am

fongkong Nozipho yena can sing vele but we agree that Nqobile bhimbas and the concensus between me and Madala is that he can improve besides he wouldn’t be the first gospel star who is not a great vocalist and I will not mention names but the clue was in the studio yesterday.

  15. Mabhebeza on Mon, 5th Sep 2011 9:13 am

    I looooove Nhlakanipho…he should win!
