TV Shows That Need To Be Canned – Part 1

September 1, 2011 by

The following is a conversation that took place very late on Saturday night. Phathu and I were chilling after a long day and our Dinner In The Sky where he enjoyed several glasses of red wine.  I don’t know how we decided to talk about TV but the chat was interesting so I recorded it on my phone and I hope you will enjoy it. I think it’s enlightening if you are someone who is interested in television but please note it was a chat between friends and that’s why it’s so informal.

You can either listen to the audio, (which I highly recommend because you’ll get to hear how passionate he is) or you can read this transcript.

TV SHOWS THAT NEED TO BE CANNED

BS: Phathu, what’s the first TV show that needs to be canned?

Phathu: Jam Alley

BS: Hahahaha What is your issue with Jam Alley? Actually Jam alley is gone and now it’s called Crew vs Crew.

Phathu: You know it’s like something that really turns bad and you add a lot of spices to eat, but it is still going to taste very bad and that is what they’ve done with Jam Alley. I mean that show has lived past its lifetime

BS: Did you see the new format, the dance crew?

Phathu: I saw it but again, it is a dying show. People trying to salvage a dying show, Jam Alley has to go; I mean it was never the same when Vinoliah left. We don’t even remember her unless we talk about her being homeless. It must just die.

BS: What did you think of Twasa, don’t you think she did a good job?

Phathu: She was too rural

BS: LOL you are just being mean

Phathu: Ok it was good when there was Nestum and Pushy, it was watchable but now with TV changing so fast, the show just remained stagnant. It’s boring.

BS: I think SABC 1 agrees Jam Alley needed to be canned and that is why it was revamped to Crew vs. crew.  So do you think it is just a bad show and they adding spice to it but it is still a bad show?

Phathu: It’s just a bad show and I think the only reason they’re keeping it is because it’s cheap to make.

BS: Oh ok, so Jam Alley has to be canned. What other show?

Phathu: 3 Talk!

BS: Hahahah and they keep shifting the time around but they never give it a prime slot

Phathu: You known in America, they say the signs when a show is dying is when they change sets. You know when they change sets, change opening titles and change the time slots it means that your show is dying and people just don’t have the balls to tell you that your show is dying. I mean they can change all the sets, they can change all the graphics, they can change everything but those topics still suck. Professor has been talking about medical Monday for the past 5 years. Noleen has been laughing with her fingers for God knows how long. The only interesting thing about the show is just to watch her weight yo-yo up and down.

BS: LOL

Phathu: The thing is, things have changed and that show has not changed. Television medium has changed and shows like Oprah and all these others stayed for a long time because they evolved with the times, 3 Talk has not changed. It is boring and it has become so commercialised, I mean, now it’s at half past three, who watches TV at half past three, maybe middle aged white women.

BS: Who is the target audience ya 3 Talk vele?

Phathu: I think its people in the old age home now.

BS: Hahahaha, I have seen lately she is trying or maybe the producers are trying. They’ve been inviting people to talk about twitter, just to try and make it current but beyond that, it doesn’t really talk to the young people who are actually the consumers of twitter.

Phathu: But young people are not watching TV at half 3, they are at school or at work. You know when you have a TV show that plays for an hour, and you want to discuss twitter….

BS: Is it for an hour?

Phathu: I think it’s about 45 minutes, and you want to discuss Twitter and Facebook? Does that mean you don’t have more subjects to discuss? Now there was a story about wanting to have a live audience but in South Africa they never get it right, only Felicia got it right so 3Talk must go.

BS: Any other show?

Phathu: Redi on Mzansi. I know people are gonna freak.

BS: I am such a fan of Redi on radio

Phathu: Me too

BS: … but I can’t watch her TV show.

Phathu: You know when bad content happens to good people, I think Redi is a brilliant investigative journalist. I think she is good when it comes to serious topics. She’s not that pink girl with a pony tail and that show needs a girl who is a bit posh and you know Redi ke ngwanyana wa ko strateng, she is ghetto like that. That show is just way off the mark; she gets over excited when she’s interviewing guests…

BS: What was the most boring or the most disappointing interview that you watched on her show?

Phathu: All her interviews for me. I always think shut up, tone it down a notch because you are not on radio. Because there she is not supposed to be aggressive to her guests, I mean, she had an interview with Khanyi Mbau and I’m thinking someone comes to your show, they don’t’ come there to be vilified and broken down into pieces. Khanyi Mbau is not a role model to anyone, and she does not have to apologise to anyone. …

BS: But that was mild compared to Khanyi Mbau’s interview on 3rd Degree… or do we really just expect that of Debra Patta?

Phathu: Okay I think 3rd degree is another show that needs to die.

BS: Why does it need to die? I thought people love 3rd Degree. Another thing that disappoints me with the show is that they will discuss topics long way after we have dealt with them.

Phathu: The thing with 3rd Degree is that I’ve got a fundamental problem. I think with ETV as a channel and what it stands for in society. I’ve got a fundamental problem in that, first of all, it’s like this cynical institution that puts a mic and a camera to say lemme  just show you just how f*cked up your black government is and 3rd degree feeds into that.

I mean Debra Patta heightens everything. She once did a thing about polygamy. We voted for Zuma, not because of the number of wives he has but based on whether he can lead or not.

BS: … and they just made an issue out of that.

Phathu: That too was so colonialist. It was racist, it portrayed polygamy in a barbaric way and that is how Debra and her team on 3rd Degree always approach each and every topic.

BS: Maybe it works for them; maybe it draws viewers to them?

Phathu: But that’s when you ask that question: I’ll go and do sensationalism just because I want viewers? Even that 24 hour news channel, I mean all the journalists there, they sound like mini Debrah Pattas, gosh! They over sensationalise everything.

BS: But they don’t write their own scripts, do they?

Phathu: But even in the field, they do that with a small little thing.

BS: How come that channel does not have breaking news? Do they ever show breaking news?

Phathu: The thing about news is that, especially if you are like Al Jazeera or CNN who have been doing it for years, news depends on how fast it trickles into your studios. You watch a show like eNews, bulletins at 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00, it’s always the same but you watch CNN and SKY, because they have bureaus all over the world, when something breaks, they can go to it live. With eTV most of the time, it’s pre-planned, if Zuma’s gonna be speaking in Pretoria then they can cut to it in the news and have someone there. The pre-planned stuff they do very well and breaking news , they can only give us that boring scrolling bar.

BS: And what other show should be canned?

Phathu: Scandal

BS: Hayibo, don’t hate now. What’s your issue with Scandal?

Phathu: I’m not hating.

BS: I don’t watch Scandal, because i just can’t stand it…

Phathu: Hahaha you see? But you’re asking what is my problem?

BS: I have never been attracted to the show but there are people who seem to enjoy it

Phathu: You know the thing about Scandal, it is dodgy.

BS: Dodgy how?

Phathu: Dodgy acting, dodgy story, dodgy set, dodgy make, dodgy wardrobe, like everything about it

BS: Nthati Moshesh is a talented actress

Phathu: I know. Nthati and Sello Maake kaNcube. Brilliant actors but let’s be honest, they are there for the money.

BS: How much do you think Sello gets, I heard he gets quite a lot of money. Is it close to what David Genaro gets?

Phathu: I hear so Nna i don’t know anything but I hear so, he gets a sh!t load of money.

BS: LOL but we are not going to talk about that. So why does Scandal have to go…you said it’s dodgy?

Phathu: First of all who in their right minds creates a soapie and name it Scandal?

BS: I think that’s because there is newspaper called Scandal?

Phathu: and nothing scandalous ever happens in the newspaper, have you realised that?

BS: LOL

Phathu: Like, nothing scandalous ever happens.

BS: Not even on the show itself?

Phathu: I’m so going to be politically crucified for this hahahaha

BS: hehehe okay let’s hear it. We’re just talking about TV here, it’s nothing personal

Phathu: You know what is my problem with Scandal? It was very good when Julie Barker was the headwriter. (Read “Julie Barker Leaves Scandal“)

BS: Hayi wena you are such a Julie Barker groupie

Phathu: I love Julie, but it’s because Julie writes beautiful stories.

BS: Okay, stop sucking up to Julie.

Phathu: Take it or leave it. Moving right along.  After she left then they started having this story line where Sello Maake Ka Ncube’s character was in a wheelchair…

BS: Yeah, and then he was pretending…

Phathu:  And he was  pretending and you sit there and you’re thinking: “Who in their right minds sat in the writer’s room and said “OMG that is going to be a fantastic story to show this guy in a wheelchair for like 3 months.”

BS: Hahahaha

Phathu: You know my other problem is, because I have written for television, for quite a few years.

BS: LOL we know

Phathu: Haha I’l tell you my problem. I have a problem when white writers interpret black stories in a way that is influenced by their uprbringing.

BS: Meaning?

Phathu: When their upbringing influences the stories they write for black characters.

BS: Oh as in like the writer’s upbringing?

Phathu: Yes and their background. I always say I really have no patience for a writer whose only demographic of a black audience is their maid.  You know, they will be like “What did you think of that show?”  and then the maid says “I love it madam” and they will think the story is good.

BS: Hahahaha

Phathu: They’ve got this story about Nthati’s character and the kid.

BS: Oh, and the kid is throwing tantrums

Phathu: The kid is hating the mother, that is so white! If you’re black, a kid at that age and you start throwing tantrums, you’ll get a hiding.

BS: Yeah…

Phathu: You know, it’s that kind of nonsense.

BS: So american…

Phathu: it is so American and you’re thinking, in the writers’ meeting, doesn’t anyone say “Let’s be honest really!” Scandal out.

BS: How is doing in terms of their viewership?

Phathu:  It still has a good viewership

BS: But you’re still not happy with how it’s going. What time is it?

Phathu: 19:30, Isidingo is also moving to the same time slot

BS: Now they will be competing with Isidingo? It’s in October neh?

Phathu: Yeah. Isidingo shouldn’t be cancelled but we’ll talk about it another day.

BS: So Phathu has spoken,  Scandal has to go.  Any other show?

Phathu: whispers Selimathunzi has to go.

BS: Hah, what do you mean Selimathunzi has to go? The just re-cast the presenter mos

Phathu: There was this whole scandal about how he was voted in when he is so terrible as a host

BS: Lol is he terrible?

Phathu: I’d rather watch paint dry…

BS: And they moved it from Saturday to Wednesday, which was a problem

Phathu: Yeah, but again it’s those kind of contracts where you wonder how people get renewed, year and year, again and again. Selimathunzi is…

BS: I think it’s done

Phathu: Now it sucks. It has done what it was supposed to do and i think that is the problem with certain channels..

BS: It’s been watered down, it doesn’t command the same respect that it used to back in the days.

Phathu: It’s stuck in the 90s.

BS: We don’t look forward to watching it like we used to when it had Dosto and Zam…

Phathu: Yeah, I think Selimathunzi is stuck in the 90s.

Ha ha ha ha , I agree on jam Alley and 3rd Degree.
@BS, are you in Netherlands/Holland on this picture? *JC*

I hope Generations is on your 2nd part of the article. I haven’t watched Jam Alley since early Mandela got out of prison! I think LIVE also needs a make over, I love Bonang bt I feel she over powers the other presenters. Rythm City is skating on a very thin line in terms of mediocrity, great acting bt the story line is too dramatic. RGB needs to step up or step out.

I also agree with you guys on Debra Patta and etv. If u compare SABC news and etv news you’ll see that etv reports more on negativity especially where the ANC is concerned. Kasi Stories is another 1, I just can’t deal! Can SABC get rid of these American soapies for good! Le Mzansi magic ya bora ka di telenovena tse tsa bona!! I love Kuli and I love headlines I wish it could be broadcast for an hour. SABC 2 comedies on sunday @7pm are horrific! Stokvel was the better thing that’s happened in that time slot! I wish they could can Monique and American idols. I’d love another season of Late Night With Kgomotso.

Shem 3 Talk ne. The few times I’ve watched since its ‘revamp’ I’ve noticed that the content has become very light hearted. I think they discuss twitter every week now. Ke sono waitse. Let’s not forget the food topics.
-Redi’s show looks like it was shot in some garage ko kasi and not ko urban crew. Its so dull(the set). I fail to understand why they have an audience, and worse part is when they show the garden chairs they sit on. Not even the slightest effort to cover them up ka le sela or something. Mxim.
    - Think Etv as a channel must go. 80% of their shows are trash. Tjo remember when it was still new? Bo Judge Judy, Ricki Lake, Steve what what, WWE, like Etv is just wrong nje. Style Jury is so irrelevant. Like who cares about when you have Dr 90210? I’m surprised they haven’t bout the Jerry Springer show. Coz it it would do just fine on Etv. Ill be back to continue my list. Gotta sleep

-Soweto Tv as a whole. Their audio is horrible, editing is pathetic. There’s this one programme called street radio. The concept can be worked on mara it makes me go tjo. All u see ama crate we beer left, right and centre.

Like why is Generations not top of this list????

  40. Mabhebeza on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 8:25 am

Shows that need to be canned:
    (i) Generations
    (ii) Jika-Majika
    (iii) Spirit Sundae
    (iv) Imizwilili

I hope the above shows will be mentioned on Part Two.

  41. LesDaChef on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 8:26 am

Agreed with most of the stuff u chatted about. Question is, what do you replace the shows with? We used to be brilliant at new drama’s and concepts but SA seems hellbent on buying overseas ideas and “Africanising” them.

  42. Mabhebeza on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 8:30 am

Gone are the days of good comedies and drama series…abo S’gudi S’nays, Hlala Kwabafileyo, Bophelo ke Semphekgo – damn I enjoyed TV then.

  43. Zonks on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 8:32 am

Morning fellow bloggers. This is my 1st official blog so il keep it brief. I see were a critic bunch *makes it that much more interesting* but I have a question…

If all of these shows are to be canned( and i fully agree that they’r past sell by date) what are the SABC sposed to air to replace them? coz let’s be honest, Bills need to be paid, and as much as they’re short on entertainment value, they do bring in revenue, which is what keeps the broadcasters afloat.

**So much 4 being brief lol**

    #HappySpringSeason2011

The problem w/ Generations is that:

    (1) The story lines aren’t that solid.
    (2) Some actors don’t deserve to be there. I feel that Mfundi / whomever was doing the casting did so out of sympathy for them and not b/c they’re good. Pretending isn’t acting.
    (3) The story plots are weak and drag on for months w/ no ending.

Jam Alley / Crew by Crew / Jika ma Jika / YOTV have lost relevance as far as entertainment is concerned. Friends Like These is not bad neither is it any good.

Selimathunzi’s male presenter lacks oomph for lack of a better word. He’s very lacklustre. He’s trying his best but he ain’t doing it for me.

Those Indians who own eTV are taking us for a mahala ride. Most of what’s on the channel is questionable. I think there are only less that 6 shows that are tolerable, the rest is cow dung.

Scandal is in itself a scandal, what’s it still doing there??? But at least it’s better that Generations.

The only thing that’s got weight on 3Talk is Noeleen’s not her topix. Her show doesn’t go deep into current affairs. She’s not engaging enough. I think she’s selling herself short / her producers.

Redi should be on a investigative current affairs show like 3rdDegree / Interface. She used to rock when she was on that show that used to air during the day Rights & Recourse on SABC3 a few years ago.

As much as I laugh at myself for watching Generations and realising it is utter nonsense I just cant cant picture my TV life without it. Normatter how tired I am I always watch it and fall on asleep before it ends + I watch the omnibus as well on Saturday.

One shoe I can really do without is Friends like these yhoooo! hay mna ndi grand shame ngoku. 14 Seasons!

Happy Spring day! Atleast the sun is coming out in CTN as well despite the threatning rain.

@SOftie bese benze njani ke abantu abangenayo iDSTV?

  46. Cya on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 8:41 am

Hayi Mabhebeza Spirit Sundae has very good content and God know I aint sayin this because I have a friend there, it is just too good for a spiritual show and their content is relevent and lives up to the name.

I knew I was gonna see Debra there, lol.

SABC should just can everything and play music and this year would be the right time to do that because the local artists that have released have uped their game. SABC people need a holiday retreat so they can go and onceptualise.

    PS I love Phathu #aboutme

  47. NarLady on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 8:43 am

ZONE *flippen* 14 has to go!!!

Infact, I am so tempted to say that they must just get rid of SABC 1 Mzantsi fo sho all together. But then I think….there’s still the news and who doesn’t want to see uMkhushulwa (I think that’s his name), the fugly guy with the dodgy suits and glasses, Noxolo Grootboom and her pretty self with ugly clothes and then Patience Dlamini (or whatever her name is, uweather gal lowa) in her “I was once thin” clothes…..

God bless South Africa….and nowhere else!!! *smile*

Or better yet buy books and read to their kids instead of searching for them ko khumbulekahaya…

The less TV we have (SABC especially) the more connected we will be as a nation!

Shows that needs to be canned: generations its jsut a mess, I agree with someone who said it must be moved to 15:00 so we’ll miss it. 3rd Degree, they are racist end of story, they go on as is they dont live in SA. Even when the journalist or news reader is reporting you sense their disgust of judgement. Jika Majika eish inyanginynyisa nje. Zone 14 is nosense. Aunty Noleen must just retire its just sad watching her. Redi will never be the same after that “ijimaphi le face”

  62. Cutypie on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 9:14 am

I agree 100% about this..Oh, I’ve always wondered what happened to Scandal. I used yo watch it religiously but something changed nje last year and this year I dnt bother my self with it anymore, same with generations. I only feel bad when I missed Isidingo so nje dont u dare put it on your list. LOL

  64. Nomaha on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 9:26 am

@DrDee hope your hair grows quickly. I once received an e-mail about a lady who put on a Brazillian weave and they attached the pictures of her skull but warned they were very sensitive so I never opened them. People said it was scary. Apparently the hair was extracted from a dead person and something about the eggs that were not cleaned properly caused the infection. But atleast you have recovered, it was said it can cause fatality.

  65. Buhlebonga on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 9:27 am

    JC looks different. I like.

I agree with Phathu. I admire him (him and Thinus Ferreira are really passionate about TV) and he always speaks his mind and says the many things people are afraid to say.
I now count the shows I watch on TV in one hand. It’s ridiculous that four channels cannot satisfy a nation.
SABC 2 is worse. It’s dead nje. The shows? or rather, lack of.

SABC 3 is starting to pick up once again- going back to their old slogan Quality Shows.
Noeleen must leave. Either they must re-invent 3Talk to have a panelist of three women at 6h30 (Noeleen, Kgomotso and Edith Venter maybe?) Sort of like The View and The Talk, but with SA’s news of the day!
And I’m getting so sick of these Twitter Kings and Queens things they do on 3Talk.

  66. DexterSUPERIOR on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 9:28 am

There’s no point going on about how Generations needs to be canned when many of you never miss an episode. 7 million of you!

I can’t wait for the ‘Underrated Actors’ piece. Should be fun dissecting and analysing the craft.

We’ll only see great television when Commissioning Editors stop accepting bribes from Urban Brew and other big production companies in exchange for crappy shows. Yes, that’s how shows like Live, Selimathunzi, etc are still on our screens even though they never appear on the ARs list.

  67. mamamia on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 9:28 am

I can tell that Phatu was tipsy when he did this pseudo-interview *hic*

Never a good idea to mix alcahol and honesty *hic*

Just because a popular presenter leaves a tv show does not mean it must be canned – ankiri tv must evolve.
How does SA TV evolve everytime shows get canned because of silly little reasons. When a show changes its set or format it means they are moving with the times – see evolving very much like the way we keep upgrading our Nokias to show we keeping up with trends/technology.
How many times did Oprah change her set yet still her show grew in ratings.
Felicia Mabuza was tried and tested and it showed that we can handle studio audience, we just don’t give ourselves enough credit.

Noeleen is the face/host/presenter of three talk, unlike Oprah she does not own the franchise, she’s only a part of the network. A studio audience works better when the host’s name is the one in neon on the background. Because as the audience we warm up to the host more than the producers and crew. We identify the show with the actual person presenting the show. Imagine if she gets fired, then turnout to studio drops due to personal attachements with the host.

I would very much like to watch Three talk problem is their timeslot, it is ackward, now that Miss Winfrey has left the building maybe they can use some of that time slot to appeal to a wider audience.

Redi’s tv show is bad cause she’s not posh enough?! That’s not even constructive criticism.

Scandal must leave because the writers are white – sounds like sour grapes and tv politics Phatu.

And now a tv shows lifespan must be equal to the presenter’s contract, it does not sound feasible. Yet people will say what about fresh new talent on tv. Hard to do when there are no more tv shows.

Remember SA has not been doing TV that long, it was only yesterday when we were told to voetsek off to bed by the then racist government at a certain time. Some of these shows are very much part of the SA TV landscape. And I don’t think SA tv is that bad in terms of content and creativity as it address strickly SA issues and and appeals to our unique culture.

Just by watching TV alone, even a visitor to our country can formulate an idea of what SA and its people are all about.

Like Generations for instance, as much as I loathe myself for watching it i realised that this is part of SA’s televion culture, very much the same way the american love All my children, the spanish dig Telemundo tv and the Japanese live for those Japanese videos they inundate us with on SABC 3 and Anime.

But honestly if i were to compare The Bold and Beautiful with Generations in terms of content and worthwhile time spent watching tv, I would rather choose Generations than some of that nonsense that passes for entertainment.

    Eish enough with the thesis.
    Morning good people.

  68. mamamia on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 9:34 am

Mtv and Reality shows are the death of innovative and quality television.

  69. Amo on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 9:38 am

I know its fairly new and all of that but Its For life on Mzansi needs to be canned too. I just dont get the story behind it and think it does not deserve air play at all.

  70. DexterSUPERIOR on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 9:41 am

@Buhlebonga, that’s a brilliant idea. The View concept is blowing up in the States. Cancelled soap operas are being replaced by similar talk shows. I dont see it working for SABC though. They always tip toe around the ANC when it comes to current affairs. Maybe etv could do it. I can already see the panel of hosts.

else play music the whole time ;)

  73. Buhlebonga on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 9:44 am

@Dexter well it won’t be solely about the ANC and it’s news, but also about what is going on generally in SA! It would have been awesome watching it after work at 6h30pm- three ouspoken people discussing what was going on in the Malema case!
They can also invite people like Simphiwe Dana, Redi Direko, et al and talk about these things.
It would be a rivetting show and the ratings will be high because we would have a panle discussing the day’s news. Much better than what our news is offering actually. I don’t need to be be told what happened anymore, I already know. I want analysis!

  74. kimmo on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 9:48 am

JIKA MAJIKA- they dont even know what to do with the show any more (promoting stumbo ..puleaze!)

While we are at it, I’m still surprised that TopTV still doesn’t have a local production on it’s flagship channel Top One!
You know if they pump money into local prodcutions, they’d get so many more subscribers.
TopTV ain’t bad, you just need to be able to figure out it’s schedule.
    However it needs local shows!

Or maybe ICASA should work on ways of making broadcast licenses easily obtainable and most of all less costly. Then we’d see more competition. Competition means these other channels will start upping their game. Imagine if there we 3 other channels targeting the same audience as SABC 1.

  88. Noance on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 10:10 am

Debra Patta must open a coffee shop and sell Italian doughnuts to our police.

Redi must stay on radio and keep running those marathons. She’s too much fro tv, our ears can handle her and not our eyes.

Actually, i don’t watch SABC much anymore. dunno what i’d do without dstv (maybe i would read more). But of the things i’ve watched and wondered how they cud be aired:

-Ekasi stories on Etv: the acting is just embarassing!!! i understand the good intentions behind the inititatives, but why do they skimp on quality acting? and some writing there le yone is questionable.
    - It’s for life: its not funny and the production or something abt the way it looks on tv is bad.
    - Pastor Mboro’s blasphemy on SowetoTV: plus they clearly dnt employ editors there. di typo and just every damn thang there is bad.

I dont agree with Phathu though when it comes to Scandal I love it ..and the Kgomotso storyline its very much real.. there isnt much difference between how black and white kids are raised today…there are kids who respect their parents and there are kids who dont, nothing to do with race.. I dont spank my child and never will

  102. Pule on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 10:43 am

I agree with most of Phathu’s comments.
I would like to add the WILD.
that soap is dead on arrival and it seems Julia Barker the head writer is trying to undo all her good works in the past.
Seeing that Phathu is a Julia groupie i don’t expect him to name that among those to be canned.
Give me Scandal over Wild any day.

On another note, i see the comments on Noleen’s weight mean and uncalled for.I will NEVER have a weight problem as i am thin for live but i will never demean a fat person in that way.

Debra needs to star in a horror movie, seems she gets her kicks from scaring people.

I will not entertain any bad word about Redi,my favourite woman in the media.

  106. Pule on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 11:01 am

i don’t understand why everyone keeps saying Generation should be canned yet you all watch it?smells like hypocrisy.

the poor quality of programs on tv is a direct result of the craze over reality tv.
why spend millions on a decent tv program when you can get 12 horny adults in a house for 3 months to be watched by millions of viewers while they do actually nothing but emerge afterwards as ‘celebrities’ and ‘role models’?

something is fundamentally wrong with the SABC structure.there is a total lack of accountability in that place and mediocrity has become such a norm that quality seems alien to them.

  107. @Alexandro_Grey on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 11:02 am

I agree with all of the above. Redi’s show is rather too loud, she needs to be a little more subtle and cut out the jumpiness as if she is a groupie each time guests she is fond of are on! As for Selimatunzi and Jam Alley well…fidgeting around and trying to reinvent a show is just wrong, times evolve, so do the interests and opinions of viewers, it’s time to get up to date, RGB, Seli and Mzansi Insider all cover the same events and all from one dull angle!!! Scandal yona is a nice show for middle class South Africa but we all know that the middle class are modest, hence how boring the show is, it lacks raw content that will get us nodding our heads in agreement because we can relate to the content. Well 3 Talk has been changing couch and set for as long as I can’t remember, think it’s according to how many kilo’s Noeleen loses or gains…anything over ten lost or gained….a new couch and set is in order! Lol…I love Noeleen but it’s time for her to go!!! Recently I noticed that 3rd degree’s Debra Patta now ends the show with “Tune in next week for more provocative journalism”; no longer an investigative journalism show. Well this is so true because according to journalism standards Debra is so darn bias, she can’t do any interview without us sensing some underlying prejudice! Well what I am really trying to say is that I agree with the article tltltltl

  108. Ndalenhle on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 11:03 am

3 Talk def has to go.
3rd degree needs a new presenter, someone who knows what investigative journalism is.
Ms Patta probes people to answer what she wants to hear or what she thinks the nation wants to hear.
kanti we want that as well as the person’s opinion and not Patta’s only. So yes, mos def has to go.

Imagine Kgomotso Matsunyane, Redi Direko, Noeleen and Katy Katopodis hosting a talk show together? FLAMES! It would be the best damn thing to happen in TV in a long time, all those different personalities together, it would make riveting TV! Current affirs, news, entertainment, sports, scandals etc etc… It’s a tried and tested way of revamping talk shows and I think SABC 3 should fill their 18h30 with this. If tehy could have that lame show with Bassie, Carol and Michelle Garfoth, surely they can have one like this?
I hope that someone from SABC 3 or e.tv are reading this and the comments and that someone is getting ideas!

    BS… let’s do sonething about this…

Jam alley or crew vs crew, kunini??!! It sucks, nd sum1 once questioned if those crews reali get the R10 000 they supposedly win. Mzansi insider, maybe its bcos i heard abt it the 1st tym when Minnie was joining the show. What is it abt vele? Asikhulume does it still play, i use 2 watch it when Xolani Gwala was stl presenting the show, afta dat i lost interest. Dexter, the fact that we still watch to complain means they are doing something right. I am one person who cant’t miss an episode. If I miss it during the week,I make sure I watch the onmibus vele angidlali. My Saturday appointments start from 1pm not before. Scandal,7de laan and Muvhango sometimes lose me for a few months. I go back for months or two then fall behind again but it doesn’t bother me. Generations on the other hand is a MUST for me.

Well Kiki, I just heard that they’re cancelling Generations at the end of the year. Lol, I bet your heart stopped for a second there. You’re such a die hard fan. I can’t stand it. They’re the laziest production team on TV. They mess up ALL THE TIME.

  143. mamamia on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 1:54 pm

South africa is not ready for something like The View. People are way too sensitive and still very racially bias. But racism will always be a motivating factor I guess so lets skip that. But it could be a hit, throw Eric Miyeni into the mix and you got fireworx.

I love Ekasi stories, they remind me of the real township life.

Intersexion was BRILLIANT – they could have spun a couple of dramas from a couple of those storylines.

Society was great – our own version of sex and the city but did they budget for more seasons. No!

Dance your butt off, is a nice concept i like it – but i do think that Relebogile needs to be more motivational than just a pretty face. It would be even better if we saw her progress too. quite contradictory that contestants are harangued to lose weight yet the show’s host qualifies to be on the show!! – talk about double standards.

I love Michael Mol’s Hello Doctor – our very on SA version of DR OZ and he’s hot too.

All we need now, are more home makeover shows – for free to some deserving families, like the top tv one.

  144. DexterSUPERIOR on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 2:03 pm

On the contrary, I think the status quo of our country is the perfect setting for such a show. Those who aren’t ready would have to watch 7de Laan. I think it would be a hit

  145. Double Delicious on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 2:04 pm

I used to enjoy Redi on Mzansi before the live audience. Generations has to go, they have long ran out of ideas. Surprised that Jam Alley is still on. Three Talk….it being aired at that time slot, is a sign that it is at the door!

  146. Brown Shuga on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 2:07 pm

@ mammamia “… A studio audience works better when the host’s name is the one in neon on the background.. ”

Why did they change it from ” 3Talk With Noeleen ” to just ” 3Talk “?

  147. faith on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 2:09 pm

SABC as a whole is a huge yawn, thanks God for DSTv because I don’t know what I would as I love TV too much, I gave up local series a long time ago thats why I’d rather download all the american series when they’re in season, the story lines are great and the actors are great as well and it’s different faces all the time unlike what we have here. Honestly guys why did they do a South African version of Idols for such a long time, the show lost it’s spark during the Poseletso, Zama Jobe era when Anke won. I watched the American Idols season 10 almost all the contestants were great it was hard to predict who was going home next as they all took it seriously and gave it their all such that some contestants get recording contracts just after leaving the show. There’s something seriously wrong with South African TV and it needs serious attention.

  148. mamamia on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 2:09 pm

whoop i keep catching a glimpse of myself in the glass building. Bathong today i’m looking sexy even if i have to say so me-self.

    Moment of selfpraise for mamamia.

Yes @Dexter as long as people can stand the heat then that show can work. You don’t want di loyalist of some person standing outside threatening to petrol bomb or necklacing the hosts. Mzantsi fo sho style. lol

  149. DexterSUPERIOR on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 2:14 pm

They changed it to just 3Talk because she’s getting bigger and its only a matter of time before they fire her.

  150. mamamia on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 2:14 pm

@BS SABC 3 did not want Noeleen getting ideas like Oprah. In other words they were trying to say she’s not the show – she’s just part of it – poor soul.

    *My theory*

  151. mamamia on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 2:17 pm

Eish but South Africans need to lighten up for the sake of ENTERTAINMENT

  153. Brown Shuga on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 2:21 pm

    Dexter mara hehehe…

I watched a repeat of Noeleen’s interview with Bheki Cele 2 nights ago and I felt like she was out of her depth. I didn’t like her going “I don’t know… Andazi General” … It’s always best to interview people only on subjects that you have researched well so that you are able to challenge, where necessary.

    Mamamia I hear you.

I like Noeleen, she’s a beautiful lady, she has a great personality and totally deserves to have her own show but 3Talk, something’s off there.

  154. DexterSUPERIOR on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 2:39 pm

I’ve said it before. The only reason 3Talk is off is because a show of that kind requires the host to have the executive producer title as well. I think she’s holding back because the show’s not hers. She’d do well on her own show where not only she makes all production decisions but she’d be able to show us her personality. The real Noeleen. There’s a huge gap between Noeleen and 3Talk. If she were to leave the show tomorrow, nobody would remember she ever hosted the show.

  155. kimmo on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 3:05 pm

  158. Pule on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 3:16 pm

Pls don’t bring The View styled shows here.
the discussions will never go beyond black/white,hosts will either be petrol bombed or spend all their time in the courts due to Afriforum what what.the studio will be a permanent venue for toyi toyi and the the likes of Eric will be occupied for years as he will have enough ammunition to write his hate filled articles.

  162. Buhlebonga on Thu, 1st Sep 2011 4:13 pm

Seriously no. The show WILL have a target audience. LSM 6 to 10 (if possible) I doubt that people would come and necklace the hosts. If tehy could do that they’d have done it to Deborah Patta long time ago.
The show would work. Mapakisha we want intelligent ladies and gents, not ama B-list socialites. It will be a hard hitting show that covers everything.

The SABC is planning on increasing it’s channels from 3 to over 10. They plan to have this done by about 2013 or so. Let’s hope the content will be good. Although it’ll be interesting to see where they’ll get +10 channels worth of good stuff seeing as the ish they have on manje is bad.

Mina I am convinced Mfundi Vundla is deliberately tryna sabotage Generations! My theory is that they’ve trapped him into a 20yr contract that he can’t leave unless he gets fired and he now writes crap to try get fired and get out of this contract (which probably pays next to nothing and stops him delving into other projects)…

miss_a, 2013 only 16 months away from now. That’s not gonna happen. The SABC is reaching for the stars here. They cant even take care of the 3 channels they have now. They probably meant 3013.

I doubt Mfundi still makes creative decisions on that show anymore. I think he ‘retired’ years ago. The passion is gone and he’s now doing it for the money.

I’m with softie on tv. I’m increasingly spending my time at this other house that doesn’t have a tv, my other home. Its so peacefull. I do more work, I read good ammount more than I do at my place. The peace!!. If there is any thing I wanna watch, serieses especially, dvd packs suffices. I feel like if I got pay tv it wud be xfactorusa fela. I’ll see.

HOWEVER I watch generations, such stressless escapism it is. It is that non engaging. If I miss it, its fine, if I watch it, its all good. I always joke that I all the more watch coz Redi does #groupie Much.

I’m all for a “the view’, ‘the talk’ kind of talk show…but in this country were even parliamentarians don’t take anything seriously because they suck up to the powers that be..-m not holding my breath.

Exploring internet TV options at the moment, any
    suggestions?

Well Ms Kinky I feel u.
I get my serieses (drama and comedies)…from my friends brother, I actually only buy iff big brother wasn’t able to download. Soo waiting for Big Bang season5…
Otherwise my best internet tv I get from good old youtube. U have people that load entire episodes of whatever u want. I pray some cyber angel will upload xfactorusa on youtube or anywhere just so I don’t have to get this godforsaken pay tv, but I have a feeling fox copyright laws are stricter than itv laws. And with the 5 million price I’m sure Simon Cowell and co will have a team shutting down cheap outlets for the show.
Internet tv will be even fun the day we aren’t this exorbitantly charged for internet anymoye mo SA. But it still costs me less thanx to big brother.
