Countdown To State Of Violence Premiere

October 25, 2011 by

SA Crime thriller State of Violence opens countrywide on 28 October. The movie is written and directed by award winning director Khalo Matabane, whose previous work includes the mini-series When We Were Black and the experimental film Conversations on a Sunday AfternoonState of Violence is set in Johannesburg and is a portrait of a man caught between ideology and family ties.

 .

It tells the story of Bobedi (played by Fana Mokoena), the newly appointed CEO of a large mining company. On the night he and his wife Joy are celebrating his success, she is murdered in a seemingly random act of violence. Frustrated by the pace of justice, Bobedi decides that revenge is his only option. But when he catches the murderer, he comes face to face with a terrible secret that connects the two men across time and history.

Also starring in the film is Presley Chweneyagae, best known for his starring role in the film Tsotsi, which won the Academy Award for Foreign Language Film at the 78th Academy Awards. He returns to the big screen as Boy-Boy, a vulnerable young man who lives with his mother in a backyard room in the township. He has a son, and family is important to him.

“He questions his brother’s values,” says Matabane. “What’s interesting about Boy-Boy is that he is a sensitive young man, the opposite of his brother Bobedi. He challenges the stereotype of the scary township dude.”

Matabane says the film was in many ways a collaborative effort. “There was a lot of freedom on set, and it was largely because of Presley’s st

rong performance as Bobedi’s brother that the theme of family dynamics really came to the fore.”

Helen Kuun, CEO of Indigenous Film Distribution, which is distributing the film in South Africa, says “Shot in 30 days, the film contrasts the harsh differences between two worlds – the poverty in which Bobedi grew up and the wealth of the area he lives in as an adult who has denied his past.”

Other well known names in the ensemble cast include veteran actress Motlatsi Mafatshe, Mary Twala, Vusi Kunene, Lindi Matshikiza, Tinah Mnumzana, Harriet Manamela and Neo Ntlatleng.

I trust Khalo Matabane and he put together an a A List cast, good enough reason to support this movie.

Nationwide from 28 October.

Great film. Loved it when I watched it at the DIFF last year. There are gripping moments and poignant one’s. Hectic, yes, and I know some people will find it emotional. Khalo and Moonyeen did a great job at casting the actors for the movie. Fana was phenomenal and that chap who plays sKhalo on Zone 14 too. Motlatsi Mafatshe also stole the show with solid scenic. He’s always type cast as and angry person now. Presley. That guy is a solid actor and his supporting role, he killed it.
Would’ve loved to cee more of Harrier Manamela (sp) on the film though. I gave it 3 stars out of 4. Go and watch it!

My first thought was dat the story of a guy who loses a wife and seeks revenge is so overdone dat in most cases the movie is predictable. But da fact dat the director is da same guy behind When we were black is enough to make me go watch. Also love wat @Buhlebonga says abt it so I’ll definately watch it

kwaaa are’nt there any other stories to tell in SA other than those that involve crime, I mean come one live out of the box wil you(to the film makers) do you ever wonder why White wedding was so successful?

Wow, sounds interesting! I’m proud of South African Film makers and the actors at large for the awesome job they do. Brilliant cast, I also can’t wait to see it. Thanks Buhle Bonga for the mini-review, much appreciated.

Kwaaaaaa @ Motlatsi being a veteran actress….lolest. Shem Mr. His-monkey actually lost a bit of weight hey, he used to be bigger than that. but even that does’t take away the talent that is him.

With that sad, How to steal 2 mil is one of the worst movies i’ve seen. I wished i had taken a torch with to the cinema as some scenes were unnecessarily dark, deliverance of lines was pathetic, just didn’t work for me…i’ve seen “African” movies of better quality on the Africa Magic channel :(
