Kiki Interviews Cabo Snoop
I remember Lelo sent me a list of artists that were going to be performing at the MTV Live Party and asked me to choose who I wanted to interview. My first choice was a local artist but her response was that he is a very private person and sets boundaries during his interviews, I immediately yawned and asked for Cabo Snoop. Then MTV Base told us he doesn’t speak no English so he will have an interpreter with him. I was like ‘hoooookay this is gonna be a difficult one‘. Should I? Shouldn’t I? I went ahead and confirmed it but trust me, I did not know what to expect. I am glad I chose to interview this young man. He is so fun and full of life it’s amazing. He is not really fluent in English but he tried shem. We understood each other.
Here is how my 20min chat with Angola‘s current “IT” boy went down.
Kiki: You are in the music business now. Has it always been your wish?
Cabo Snoop: I have always been in the industry but as a dancer. I used to go to the studio a lot so when our producer passed away I decided to pursue music. It makes me remember him all the time because he loved this craft. I remember all those beats he used to play and made me fall in love with music.
Kiki: You said you started as a dancer? Who were you dancing for?
Cabo: I wasn’t dancing professionally. It was just a hobby though I was hoping that one day someone will spot me and give me a chance. I used to just dance on the streets and also in schools.
Kiki: I thought you were a professional dancer. So how did you end up in music studios then?
Cabo: This producer that inspired me was actually a friend of mine. He was producing for other people and I’d visit him in studio.
Kiki: Ok, now I understand. How do you come up with the lyrics to your songs? Like the known one Windeck?
Cabo: That song was written by my late friend (the Producer). During those days I used to visit him in studio. He’d give me a microphone and some beats and I would just play around so one day he gave me Windeck the word and we played with it and now it’s a hit. (He laughs)
Kiki: So which artists have you worked with/collaborated with so far?
Cabo: I have worked with a lot of African artists. Buffalo Soldier from Zimbabwe. Dj Cleo from South Africa. I also worked with artists from Nigeria,Uganda etc. I’m working on something with Professor and also Zakes Bantwini.
Kiki: It seems you are working or planning on doing some collabos with a lot of South African artists. So when are you planning on working with Nothende? (I pointed at Nothende because I asked her to take the pics during this interview she was also there for her sound check)
Cabo: Does she sing also?
Kiki: Yes she does and she sings very well.
Cabo: No problem. Will discuss it after this and see what we can do.
(I am waiting for that collabo guys because I want my cut.) lol
Kiki: Ok back to our interview. If you were not a musician, what would you be doing besides dancing?
Cabo: I would be a working in the church. You know those guys in long robes that help the ‘Father’ in the church? That’s where I would be. That would be me.
Kiki: Oh? Wow! And what inspires this hairstyle and these very colourful outfits of yours?
Cabo: Your questions?? (Points a finger at me laughing)
Kiki: What’s wrong with my questions?
Cabo: Very difficult. Not what I usually get asked.
Kiki: I work for Just Curious. We are always curious. Now answer my question please. Hahahah you know we don’t have a lot of time for this chat. The hair & outfits??
Cabo: I’ve always liked Michael Jackson & Usher and that is why I love dancing a lot. So with both these legends in mind I wanted to add something to it by creating my own image or identity. I didn’t want to be labelled as just a MJ or Usher wannabe so I brought colour and this unusual hairstyle into it to make Cabo Snoop.
Kiki: How old are you?
Cabo: I am 20 years old.
Kiki: 20years?? You are a kid moes?
Cabo: No I’m not a kid. I’m a young man. (He laughs)
Kiki: You are a kid. 20?? I hope you’re not married and that you don’t have any children yet because I mean at 20 you are still very young.
Cabo: hahahahah No I’m not married and no kids yet.
Kiki: Do you believe in marriage though?
Cabo: Yehhhhh it’s complicated. Marriage is complicated.
Kiki: What do you mean marriage is complicated? You are 20, never been married but you say it’s complicated. How?
Cabo: I’m saying it’s complicated because it’s another step. A very serious step. When you decide to marry someone, you have to sacrifice a lot. You also have to be considerate in all that you do because you are now attached to someone else. So your life is not just about you anymore.
Kiki: You say you believe in marriage? Does that mean you will settle down one day?
Cabo: Yes I will get married but not now.
Kiki: So I guess only then you will be willing to over look the ‘it’s complicated’ part. Does that mean you will quit being in the public eye?
Cabo: Not exactly quit but I will have to tone it down.
Kiki: At the moment how are you handling Fame, Women and Money?
Cabo: Ohooooooo you and these questions of yours? Haaaaaaaaaa haaaaaaa
Kiki: Just answer the question young man. Hahahah
Cabo: I don’t spend my time focusing on it. Ever since I became famous I haven’t changed. I am still and always will be Cabo Snoop. Money, Women & Fame will not change me. I have family values and in everything that I do I think of my family. I use my money wisely by always giving back where I come from. I spend it on the things I believe in. I don’t spend it like a crazy boy. When it comes to women it’s difficult because you won’t know if the girl loves you or they love the fame and the money. So I try to keep my distance when it comes to women.
Kiki: So, where do you see Cabo in 10years time?
Cabo: That’s difficult. I can’t predict where I will be because nobody knows. At my age I have achieved a lot compared to some people that are older than me. Within 2 years I have performed with big people in this game. Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe, Omarion etc. I am here in South Africa working with top artists. I have performed in France, Netherlands and Portugal. Those are the things I could only dream of but it’s happening already. Everything happened so fast within a short period of time and I didn’t even see it coming. So where Cabo will be in 10 years? Only God knows. I don’t know.
Kiki: Have you encountered anything that really put your spirit down?
Cabo: It was when my friend (the producer) died. That really hit me hard.
Kiki: Talking about death. If you had to die today, what would you like to be remembered as?
Cabo: I would like to be remembered as someone who loved God. Someone who helped and loved others.
Kiki: Thank you so much for your time. You are such a bubbly and a happy kid you know? It was fun.
Cabo: Stop calling me a kid. Ok can I say one more thing?
Kiki: Hahahah go ahead.
Cabo: I want to thank South Africa for the love and support they are showing me. I really appreciate it. Please vote for me I am nominated for two Channel O Awards and also nominated for Best World wide Act at the MTV Europe Awards. So please vote for me. Thank You.
