You Are NOT A Diva

November 7, 2011 by

During the week I met a friend of mine and I was speaking to him about these two white friends of mine who are totally fabulous people with a great sense of humour. It eventually led us to the word DIVA which is the most abused word on the planet.

Our conversation led me to investigate and search for the origin of the word and what it meant back in the days vs its current meaning. I discovered that the word is italian and it is used to describe a woman of outstanding talent in the world of opera, and by extension in theatre, cinema and popular music. The meaning of diva is closely related to that of “prima donna”. The word entered the English language in the late 19th century. It is derived from the Italian noun diva, a female deity. The male version is divo which was also used to describe musicians like Pavarotti.

The urban dictionary describes a diva as someone that oozes fabulosity. Someone with a lavish lifestyle. Elton John can be described as a diva. This brings me to the abuse of the word.

I have often heard 20 year old gay boys describing themselves as divas just because they are flamboyant and afford to buy a few items from YDE. Just because they walk around with fake bling, huge shades and huge “man bags”. I have also seen young girls with cheap bonding, lip gloss, painful cheap heels, fake luxury brand bags and sitting on the passenger side of their boyfriends cars also describing themselves as divas.

I often ask myself:

  • How are you a diva when you live in a campus residence?
  • How are you a diva when you still have a 9 to 5?
  • How are you a diva when you spend 8 hours of your day sitting in a cubicle?
  • How are you a diva when you still get excited by holding a glass of Moet?

We are honestly living in times where people find it easy to abuse titles that require hard work to acquire. We freely give out titles like “legend” and “diva” to people that do not deserve them. There is a certain amount of financial freedom and class that comes with the word diva. If you are still a student and live off your parents, you are NOT a diva. If you have a boss, you are NOT a diva.

This title has often been abused by people that behave like prima donna’s. It has also landed in the hands of drama queens who make Jack, from Will & Grace, look like a butch lesbian. I agree that divas tend to have those characteristics and mannerisms but just because you have them does not mean that you are a diva. Just like how appearing on Friends Like These and Jam Alley as a contestant doesn’t make you a TV personality even though you did appear on TV.

This is actually something that every self appointed diva out there should be aware of as the Black gay cult leader (Beyonce) has issued out a memo in the song “diva” describing exactly what makes her deserving of the title. The line that should send a clear message as to what a diva is, is when she mentions the fact that there are no passengers on her plane.

So these people who call themselves divas are actually not divas… Good. What’s it to you? Why does it bother u so much? You’re not a diva, & you’re not crazy enough to claim to be one, shouldn’t that be enough to make you happy?

People call themselves princesses and princes/kings/queens everyday, yet they’ve never even seen a palace, let alone belong to one. We’ve been abusing words for ages and ages…. Mablerh, please, nawe I’m sure you’re not whatever it is you claim to be. (& I know what u claim to be, u are not it) But that doesn’t stop u from referring to yourself as “it”.

*waves to the person who promised us a weekly article titled “this week on entertainment”, hello, we haven’t forgotten*

LoL @ Mablerh ur articles as always are spiralling downwards; in this century a diva is what u wanna be! I can be a self entitled Diva because I don’t settle and believe Moet tastes like shit (oh no actually umchamo wehashi; *never tasted it be4)oh and I don’t know the front door of Mr Price;never have not even as a teenager! So if I want to call myself a Diva and still take the Boeing 747 with passengers on it on coach and still call myself a DIVA tts right; I am it!

Some of your articles are so annoying; you have become so vain its not cute anymore; all you do is bash people or classify people! Hello in this century who does that! Clearly only YOU! KMT

Hebathong! Mableh I usually love ur articles because they are thought provocking but this?? I dont even know where to begin. People have been “abusing” words for centuries!
Princess, king, my angel and such mos..
So WHAAT if people call themselves “DIVAS”??? I would take pride working in that 9-5 cubicle because I got my own! And just because I shop M.P dont make me lesser of a person! Personally material worth dont make me I would rather invest than spend 5000 grand on shoes! And dats just me!

So a DIVA can wear your MrP, work a 9-5 and still not have a car!!!
You have the confidence and can walk the walk? Go ahead you DIVA YOU

I did not enjoy this article one bit. It seems to be a scathying attack on members of our society who Mablerh is not particularly fond off. Until I have my own blog I’ll have to put up with this article and its sentiments. I wish Mablerh would explain this article. Is it about the adjective or a promotion of all things elite and materialist?

  14. dejane on Tue, 8th Nov 2011 1:53 am

I’m not so sure about this article. First you define diva as similar to a prima donna right? Then you tell us Beyonce is a diva. Yet Beyonce says a diva is a female version of a hustler.

So hustlers can’t carry n call themselves divas prior to actually making it? Hawu vele I’ll wear my Mr Price until I can afford to wear True Religion or other expensive brands there are out there.

  15. dejane on Tue, 8th Nov 2011 2:00 am

Hai I’m not too sure about this article. First you say a diva is similar to a prima donna and give a definition to what it means. Then you make reference to what Beyonce’s definition of a diva is, which is totally different.

B says a diva is a female version of a hustler right? So whilst I’m still hustling I’ll continue wearing my Mr Price until the day I’ve made my millions and can afford to wear more expensive brands.

Kante Just Curious is it a blog about gossip, celebrities, and the entertainment industry of is it now about writers expressing what is on their mind? This article is so full of haterage and is so tasteless, I don’t understand why im not allowed to call my self Diva just cause I sit on the passengers seat in my BF’s car or just coz I shop @ Mr P…we get so many articles from this blog bashing on the average person, it has become such a yawn, yes I work 9_5 to put food on my sons table..I should qualify to be a diva..I work 8 hours a day in a cubicle to make money so I can pay for my sis tertiary fees…so I qualify as a diva…I can’t afford to buy a car coz I’m helping pay off my moms bond..so yeah I do qualify to be called a diva, I can’t afford expensive weaves because I have to send my grandmother money so they can get by…I deserve to be called a diva…evn if I buy a fake gucci bag its not gonna change the world…so I suggest u hush and sit down, go back to drawing board and figure a way to make JC interesting cause it is turning into a big Yawn!

  25. Jahara on Tue, 8th Nov 2011 5:04 am

I think that a DIVA is a woman who’s on top of her game,be it education, family, work…the best at
what she does. A DIVA is always looking for ways
to better herself. Is about getting her money her own way, whether employer or employee. To me a DIVA is a woman who is looked
at by other people and they wanna know what is it that she is doing so right to be who she is.

So to sum it up… Being a DIVA is about definin urself,& appreciatin ur journey to becomin the person you wanna be. Appearance can easily be altered, but we all know that ‘DIVA’ comes from within and any real modification you wanna make will also have to come from within. Always stay true to you and love the DIVA within.

    *perfectin the diva in me*

Have a grrrrr day my fellow divas!

True status is not some one night stand panacea of instant gratification. It can’t be bought cheaply / fraudulently at a dodgy street corner alley somewhere. True status can only be earned through having a superior work ethic, having a goal-driven world-view, espousing a achiever mind-set, not being content w/ the average and mundane, someone not interested in following the masses. It’s about setting your own standards of success, not some dogma imposed by the state, religion, friends, family, etc. It doesn’t matter whether society at large understands you or not, that’s irrelevant b/c you’re a diva / divo of your destiny and in a class of your own.

It’s not for those who lack the above mentioned qualities. Abo’mahlalela must JBS / JSD. As I stated earlier on, the state of being a diva / divo can’t be assumed fraudulently w/o hard work, #FINISH&KLAAR.

  37. freckles on Tue, 8th Nov 2011 8:05 am

@JG, hardwork makes one a diva right? That’s so silly. What abt FB creator, who sits back and we are the ones “working hard” on his behalf? Prostitutes work hard, gardner, tsotsi’s heck even gold-diggers and cleaners. so re-phrase your statement. I get you want to sound insightful and smart, but come on!

  38. Billy_O on Tue, 8th Nov 2011 8:12 am

I live a res at Wits, we call it Medhurst- House of Divas. Not because we have money or are ‘fabulous’ but because of the academic excellence that is achieved within the res. Yes, we are still living off our parents but we are excelling in the one area that we can claim is ours: academics. So I believe in our own right, we are DIVAS.

  39. golden diva on Tue, 8th Nov 2011 8:24 am

@freckles, please just \_ kancane nje. JG didn’t say hardwork makes you a diva, he said you can’t just claim being a diva fraudulently without hardwork. He also said: ” through having a superior work ethic, having a goal-driven world-view, espousing a achiever mind-set, not being content w/ the average and mundane, someone not interested in following the masses. It’s about setting your own standards of success, not some dogma imposed by the state, religion, friends, family, etc. It doesn’t matter whether society at large understands you or not, that’s irrelevant b/c you’re a diva / divo of your destiny and in a class of your own” so you’re the one trying to be smart and insightful. K thanks bye.

Inact I can go so far as to say in 2011 the cubicle is the new boardroom… like fourty is the new fourty… there are several advantages to working in a cubicle that I’d like to point out to Mablerh…

1.You get to take POWER NAPS… I have just woken up with ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ all over my spreadsheet… If I worked in open plan I would be in kak with my team leader … but because I’m in a cubicle I’m A OKAY :)

    2. Cubicles are nice & private, you get abuse company time by making 2 hour long phone calls to the Transkei & blog all day with impunity could go on but yithi ngilale… ngizovuka ngikutshele amanye ama rasons why ngithanda i cubicle yami!

‘ i just knew it was Mablerh who wrote this, why are u always negative bla bla bla .’

I reckon its best 2 just skip the articles za mablerh if uzoqhamuka nama pre assumptions about his truth, what he said is not the gospel so some of yall need 2 chill. I dont agree with what he wrote 2day but its just an opinion piece, it shouldnt make a difference in your life unless u seek validation from da writer about how 2 live your life.

We can either agree or disagree with him not attack, do u and let the writer do him. His view is just dat, his view, akabeke sbhamu on your heads trying 2 impose it on u, u have a choice 2 agree or disagree or remain on the fence.

  66. blunt on Tue, 8th Nov 2011 11:13 am

So Mablerh i guess Minnie aint No Diva because she wears Legit, which is the same as Mr Price!! *drops mic, walks away*

  67. Pana on Tue, 8th Nov 2011 11:15 am

Ever heard of pejoration? You must have heard it in the communications class.
It’s words that change meaning with time? Diva, Gay, Top…
I’m convinced nna MaBlerh ho re you’ve got crippled mentality.
You get fascinated by white people, but look down on someone who gets excited by drinking a glass of Moét?
    No man, uyazihlaza.
Worst of all, you think you the standard by which people should behave. Hay’maan!

  68. blunt on Tue, 8th Nov 2011 11:25 am

Did u check Bonangs episode of Top Shayela?? She rocks Lous Vuitons, Gucci’s and she proudly said Mr Price! And that girl right now is a true Diva, definition of a hustler…Let people call themselves whatever they wana call themselves! Who died and made u a “Caller”?!

  73. lolo on Tue, 8th Nov 2011 12:00 pm

I’m a diva right… but sometimes money is tight …even for Divas such as myself so last December this friend has a huge- ass garden wedding @ a country club in Centurion…I spend a fortune on my dress… I swear my dress cost me more than the GDP of some central African state… I wanted to buy shoes that were equally fly but hubby would not have it… he refused point blank to hand over his bank card…

This was horrible… I really needed fly shoes… so I went to the Plaza & they had these kiler six inch heels that looked excactly like the ones I saw on Harpers & Queens magazine… but this pair cost a fraction of the price… just R159.00…

I was like HAYI LA NGIYABANGENA…KUZONYIWA!

Iyho azange izicathulo zingihlukumeze kanje… my toes were on fire… I was hurting… @ the church service I actually broke down & cried…people must have been thinking ukuthi I’m touched by the poignant vows exchanged… kanti my toes felt like they were on hot coals…At the service the darned heels kept sinking onto the lawn…

    at the end I thought

HAYI YESSES ANGEKE NGIDLIWE YISICATHULO INGATHI SINGILOBOLILE LA …I took off my shoes & was barefoot for the rest of the wedding!

So cheap heels … I can relate… Dang those things hurt!

  80. MissAN on Tue, 8th Nov 2011 1:04 pm

LOL @ manny… o reng…Licenece is not an Honours degree???

Anyways…I think @lorrelai,@Pana and @djane summed it well for me… At the end of the day,Beyonce had to work at being that Diva and I bet it all started in the mind…Konje bathini fake it til you make it…

So I guess the alternative of reaching the Diva status is:

    1) Work a 9-5,chancs are you will never own a private jet
    2) Marry filthy rich, think Mabilu 15 000 000 wedding, but there will be the likes of @Mablerh to tell you its your husband’s money NOT yours
    3) Be self-made…. Guranteed.

Guys…guys…stop being worked up by Blessing… his word is KING and takes baths in Moet…

At the end of the day,all these Divas that are not really Divas according to @Mablerh’s gospel, are aspiring for a better life and if they cool with it…so let them be…

I am yet to see anyone that doesn’t want the good life, unfortunately not all will ever taste Moet, wear LV,Gucci, bank with Investec, have a private banker, get a Brazilian weave…as long as Maslow’s basic needs are met…then you a D.I.V.A no matter who says what…

    Hello you sweet pumpkins…

  81. MaBlerh on Tue, 8th Nov 2011 1:06 pm

Funlover, i-mandate yami akuyona eyokwakha abantu. Ngila ukuzobhala into engiyithandayo with the purpose to entertain. Awuphoqelekile ukuthi ufunde engikubhalile. Woqala ubheke ukuthi kubhale mese wenza isinqumo sokuthi uyafunda noma cha! Ungazihlukumezi.

    Ngethembe ukuthi ngikuphendule kahle.

How are you a diva when you still get excited by holding a glass of Moet? Tl tl tl..

  83. lolo on Tue, 8th Nov 2011 1:15 pm

I think some people have ceased to have a sense of humour… to them, if a piece is meant to be funny then the writer needs to be more graphic… punctuate each sentence with a kwaaaaaaaaa or a LOL…

Again I think this piece is meant to be humourous, funny… We all need to seriously relax…I think some of us use this poor blog to vent instead of using it for its intended purpose which is for entertainment… I know this cause I’m occasionaly guilty of using this platform to vent aswell…which is sometimes not so good…

So lets all breathe tuu, sihlekeni!

  84. Lucy on Tue, 8th Nov 2011 1:16 pm

LOL!!!!! so guys when you bring Minnie in a Mablerh article is it an attempt to hurt Mablerhs feelings or change his mind about what hes written maybe O_0.i dont get it..i think its quite unfair…anyway..

    Dear Mablerr

I have re-read this article about 4 times, but I just can’t find the relevance of mentioning your “white fabulous” friends in this article. What has skin colour got to do do with fabulousity?

  98. TPZ on Tue, 8th Nov 2011 3:52 pm

Honestly see nothing wrong in the article, actually found it funny. Its ok to disagree but the way some people go on,they take things to heart and start insulting the writer. So if u call urself a DIVA and mableh tells u that u not a diva y shud u be hurt its nt about the title mos its how u feel. Are we offended cos maybe hs telling the truth…hay we need a sense of humour shame

  99. Fezzy on Tue, 8th Nov 2011 3:55 pm

Its a good Lelo doesnt want to give us a party. Baningi abazobuya nama blue eye nemilomo edumbile.

Mina Im not offended by this article cos the word DIVA nje irritates me. The word doesnt define who or what you are, everyone must live their lives the way they want to, its not like you get an allowance if you are labelled as a diva. Akufi muntu futhi mangabe ungeyona iDiva leyo.

Kodwa nami ngingathandake ukwazi nge “two white friends of mine”, ivele yaphelela emoyeni nje.

  100. Fezzy on Tue, 8th Nov 2011 3:57 pm

The only thing i don’t get about this article is the need to mention “white friends”. Otherwise this is just an opinion piece that shouldn’t change how you choose to see / call yourself. Go ahead and rock lezozingubo zakho from your favourite chinese shop, it doesn’t change the price of bread

One slinyana day we will all grow up and learn to critique the WORK and not insult the writer… One day… I still have hope
