The Magazine Cover Wars

February 7, 2012 by

It’s February and time for me to do one of my favourite things! Checking out who’s on what magazine cover and giving my 2 cents on the ones that grab my attention.

One of the most beautiful pregnant women you’ll ever see, Zonke Dikana is on the cover of Feb Mamas & Papas. Yes, she’s passionate about music and motherhood but did she have to hold a microphone on the cover? & That type?

The word “songbird”is enough to tell those who don’t know that she’s a musician.Kinda feels like she’s been pregnant for a very long time, eish I still need to buy her album, Ina Ethe, hearing only good things about it.

Forbes Africa has a woman on this issue and she’s Amolo Ng’weno, who is the Harvard-educated pioneer of the internet in East Africa. Her story:  She sold out when times got tough, but now she is trying to make a comeback….

Sounds like something I need to be reading. Will get a copy, if anyone is willing to pay half. This mag’s expensive shem. R39, 90.

‘Looks like Destiny is done with the entertainment girls and they are back to putting genuine inspiration stories on their cover. Must be tricky deciding on their cover girls because as much as it’s ideal for them to to have these accomplished women, it’s not easy for the consumer to buy a magazine with an unfamiliar face on its cover but that’s what Destiny is about, introducing us to the real power players. Not just the people we can read about in any weekly mag.

Executive Director for Development and Decision Support at SAB, Yolanda Cuba covers this month’s issue and talks about her success. See, that doesn’t scream “buy me”…

Sophie Ndaba and her Bishop cover the Valentine’s issue of Move!. I do want to read about Sophie and her man, so as much as I don’t want to , I will buy this issue but I have to say that I have been really disappointed with Move! these past few weeks because from the last 2 issues I bought, I could only read no more than 2 stories. The rest is just made up of random stuff…. It’s a problem when a mag tries to cater for the whole family.

For us aging women, here’s an issue of Longevity with 5 ex-Miss South Africas who share where they have come from and where they are going. I only recognize Amy and Kerishnie.

Lesego Motsepe is on the cover of Real Magazine. I have a weakness for Real. I just love how when you read their stories, it’s in the celebrity’s words so it feels like like the celebrity is speaking to you directly, telling you their story, without a journalist trying to interpret for you.

In the article, Lesego speaks openly about her decision to disclose her status and I have to really compliment them for a beautiful cover, and beautiful pictures in general. She looks great, the clothes are stylish… You know some people when they say they are broke you actually see it through their pictures but they did a great job with this.

Here’s what she says in the interview:

“Thirteen years of being quiet is a very long time, full of guilt, deception, more guilt and fear of rejection. That’s why I decided that if people disown me, it is their choice, but I’m taking a stand for myself.

On Not disclosing earlier:

“At that time, the TV adverts were like ‘Aids kills’ with coffins and all sorts of horrific things. A woman had been stoned to death in Durban because of her status. It was just horrific to the core. There was a lot of stigma around HIV, which further added to the fear on everyone’s minds. That stigma still exists. There was no pre- and post-test counselling like there is now.”

On coming face to face with the virus:

“In 2010 I had to come face to face with this damn thing that lives in my blood that’s called HIV. It wanted me to be a corpse before I reached 37 years of age. I wouldn’t hear of that, so I told it, ‘Bona mona wena HIV, o ka se mpolaye nna (Look here HIV, you can’t kill me). You thought I was down and out but I’m not. My CD4 count may be 99, but for as long as it’s not zero, I am holding on!’ Seven weeks later, I was wheeled out of Olivedale Clinic. The basic things – feeding myself, showering, putting on body cream, little things like that, I could not do for myself. I started pushing my boundaries …I have a strong spirit. I did not give up and I’m not giving up yet.”

On being broke:

“I am human, after all, and these things happen to even the best of us. When I don’t have money, I don’t have money, period. When creditors phone and threaten me saying: ‘Miss Motsepe, we’re gonna take your car, cancel your cellphone and take back the house because you are in arrears…’, I reply, ‘I know, I understand. My intention is to pay, but I can’t pay if I don’t have work’.”

It’s a REAL interview and puts a lot of things into perspective so I’d recommend spending your R12 on this one. Lesego now has an advice column in the mag where she encourages readers to ask her any HIV questions they’ve always been shy to ask. Nice one Real. Lemme stop before they say you’re paying me to be nice.

Lira looks really beautiful on this cover. Stylish shoot, classy dress but the only reason I bought this was because Kuli and her kids at home was something no mag has ever done before (none that I know of) so it was refreshing to see. She has gorgeous kids and through all the madness we forget that some of these women in entertainmen are single mothers who are doing this difficult job of raising kids and for that we salute Kuli and all the other moms.

I haven’t read Lira’s article yet… that “America Just Loves Me ” tells me that she’s doing okay, no drama so I can still read it next week it’ll be cool. There is also an interview with MiCasa in this issue, I have no idea why they would omit that from the cover, when Micasa is this popular. Maybe it was space… Well, I would’ve replaced that Valentine’s Fashion bit, who cares about that really, it’s 2012, doubt that’s a selling point.

I’ve never seen “actress” Tarina Patel in anything but apparently she is South Africa’s Bollywood IT girl. But then again, I don’t watch any Bollywood stuff. The only thing I know about her is that she’s rich, or has a rich husband and that she’s gone and messed up her face with plastic surgery. Hence those Taylor Forrester lips.

I think the closed eyes cover is fine if the covergirl is someone recognizable but ke this mag is free so I doubt they have anything to lose. Love the colours though, and her eye make up.

If Tarina wants to continue with her plastic surgery she should ask Patricia Lewis to refer her to her doctor coz he’s good. Patricia still looks great! Remember her on that game show, “It’s Your Choice “ with Menzi Ngubane and the special way he said ” Patricia”? heheheh

I wish I knew what it is she talks about for the first time in this issue of Finesse.

Seems Kelly Khumalo is back on the scene! Lady’s been tweeting up a storm these days and is currently working on her new album, she’s working with Kabomo and I hope it will be a great album. Her voice is missed.

About the cover: The cover star looks beautiful and I like her dress. The only story on this cover I want to read though is Kelly’s story, the rest seem like articles I can get on google. A taste for Madiba is obviously about the “Ukutya Kwasekhaya”book.

Based on how we were mislead by Kelly’s previous 2 “EXCLUSIVES” on Drum Magazine, I will not be rushing to go buy whatever exclusive is promised in this mag. I will wait for someone I know to buy this or one of the bloggers who’s got it to tell us what she says in there. I am tired of stories, I will buy her album rather. That should mean more.

She’s also a guest on Noeleen’s 3 Talk on Wednesday, 08 February. Hopefully Noeleen will ask everything we are curious about.

I like Idols winner, Elvis Blue and his story is interesting. Beautiful wife too. Is that flower thing part of her outfit?

I like the way Michelle”s sitting here and I think she looks beautiful..

If your favourite mag isn’t here it’s coz they have an international face or… I didn’t see it. Sorry.

Which mags caught your attention?

The Real cover story “GOLD DIGGING: Why young women chase rich guys’ WTF???? I mean the headline IS the story moss…

They should have done a “10 fool-proof ways to chase and catch a rich guy!

  11. lolo on Tue, 7th Feb 2012 8:20 am

@Manny hayi kalok Manny she is looking at me… tshh! Kaloku I predict that mna noZonke zizokwazana one of these days… the poor dear has made a mistake of inboxing my behind!

( maybe I’m lying about that, could just be wishfull thinking on my part)

But that cover DAANG!!! And Manny Zonke has the kinda legs that I like … ezizitho ezigcweleyo ( Xhosa legs)Akanangcondo!

@Fezzy also has the kinda legs I like! #sigh#

  12. Biskiti on Tue, 7th Feb 2012 8:32 am

    Siya Bonga BS!!!

I don’t mean to start a topic, but umyeni ka Queen has this “Theo wa Mafikizolo” aura about him! Or maybe he was trying to hard on that cover, pouting that is.

BS is think Zonke is on her 5th tri-mester now, she is holding on to the glowing agents that come with pregnancy.

From all the covers, i’d like to read Lesego”s story and that of Kuli’s family. That would probably be too interesting. What a crazy soul that Kuli is. The cover ya Michelle Williams looks sexy, with a hint of innocence!

As for Kelly, Lira, Queen & afrikaans magazines, let me politely say i’m not their target market. I’m just glad that those hidious plasticky weaves haven’t reached East Africa yet, if Mam Amolo’s bambatha shluthu is anything to go by.

  13. Vesa on Tue, 7th Feb 2012 8:33 am

Michelle Williams is looking cute on that cover. She always reminds me of the Dawson’s Creek days.

Lesego Motsepe’s story is heartbreaking and sad.

    I also love Elvis Blue!

  14. lolo on Tue, 7th Feb 2012 8:41 am

@Biskiti I could hug you right now… I was thinking the exact same thing about Queen’s hubby but was too shy to say!

The dude looks like he is seducing the camera-man with his eyes… and his lips just have a hint of lip gloss… add to that the wine coloured jacket with an embossed patern and a silk tie… then you have a resident of a transparent closet on your hands….

But I think we should ask @Joneigh about this…so
@Joneigh… is your gayday reacting @ all to Mr Queen Moroka?

  15. bongi on Tue, 7th Feb 2012 8:48 am

hi Biskiti waves back at you sunshine…he..he..he Lolo @ Xhosa legs..

Kuli’s story was very short mani..i wanted to hear more..Lesego’s story is an eye opener that HIV is really not a death sentence .

Wasn’t there something about magazines earlier this year?

And no pics from the J&B met? Guess not cause that’s already stale news I suppose..

Only cover that interests me is the one with Sophie. People were blasting the poor groom on phil mphela’s blog calling him an imposter.. Well hope that’s not true- really happy that Sophie has finally found happiness..

  22. lindiwe on Tue, 7th Feb 2012 10:35 am

when i saw that Michelle Williams cover of Elle magazine i just had to buy it. stunning.
i dont think i will buy this March issue of True Love considering the lies we have read on Drum about Kelly Khumalo before, will there be anything new. since TL has a new editor i was expecting to see a difference on the cover and the type of stories they have, it seems boooring to me.
Im honestly tired of reading about Lira on mag covers, kunini. they could have had Kuli & her kids on the cover instead.

  23. Biskiti on Tue, 7th Feb 2012 10:41 am

Soo true Lolo, there’s something about Mr. Queen that reminds me of Prada from Isidingo. Yeah, it’s probably just the makeup from the shoot, well hopefully he doesn’t sample on our Queen”s makeup kit, metrosexual or not.

  24. Biskiti on Tue, 7th Feb 2012 10:47 am

Lindiwe, i also think a mag with Kuli & Kids would have sold more copies than boring old Lira! She must move to the states already, that way will miss her and maybe appreciate her more.

  25. lolo on Tue, 7th Feb 2012 12:00 pm

This is gonna sound very bitchy so brace yourselves…Lira makes me a lil bit naar! Don’t get me wrong! I still love her music, and I think she is stylish and has tons of talent but she is almost too perfect. The way she is packaged has worked too well, now she sounds ( on interviews)like a stepford artist! She never puts a foot wrong, which to me is extremely boring. She kinda reminds me of the perfect Britney Spears before her mental breakdown or the perfect Whitney before her crack cocaine! I think she should loosen up a bit. Brenda was worshiped not only cause of her music but also because she was human and flawed. I get the feeling that Lira’s people want us to believe that she shits ice cream. Which is not very attractive to me. It also annoys me how she just looves her in-laws as though when the mlungu first brought her home , there were no issues!

  26. Loulou on Tue, 7th Feb 2012 12:16 pm

I buy Destiny reliogously and I’m glad they’re back to the Power Players, the Claire’s and Unathi’s must stay in their lane! As for True Love, I’ve subscribed so akena choice, but last month’s cover was pap, really disappointed in Mrs Nciza!

  27. bongi on Tue, 7th Feb 2012 12:23 pm

kwa.kwa..kwa..kwa..kwa…Lolo *whispering in your ear* unyanisile uyandidina nam..wafihla nomtshato- if it wasnt for her music career that mlungu wasnt even gonna look twice at her.

  28. lolo on Tue, 7th Feb 2012 12:48 pm

@Bongi uyaxoka wena lamlungu was gonna look thrice @ her even if she was not a musician…

Then he was gonna take a photo of her, blow it up and put in on a wall on his lounge… next to the big five!

  29. TheAngel on Tue, 7th Feb 2012 12:52 pm

Every time I see Sophy and her hubby I cross my fingers he hasn’t done something. Pheww *wiping sweat off my forehead* This “Bishop” though SMH. When the news broke that my dear Sophy got married I was very happy for her until I saw the groom. He is just a coloured version of Mboro minus the nails. It’s a matter of time we read about their split or him cheating or beating up our sweet Sophy. Le yena she should have done her homework before hooking up with mr bishop

  30. @JoneighGALAXY™ on Tue, 7th Feb 2012 12:55 pm

@Lolo: I fully agree w/ on the part of Lira being too spotless & concealed. She’s like a little convent nun; all gracious on the outside but I bet if I dig enough I’d find not a closet, but a graveyard full of skeletons. There’s an Afrikaans saying: Stille waters, dippe grond. Onder draai die duiwel rond. Something is buried deep under that calm demeanor.

It’s not Mr. Queen’s sexuality I’m worried about, it’s his teeth. Does he have a full set of teeth. I just pray he’s not like some coloureds w/ toothless caves for mouths. I also think Queen robbed a boy of the chance to fully develop into a man. He’s got an aura of a teenager, not that of a man. She should just put him back in his cradle to fully mature. Mama Queen moet hierdie seuntjie ge oplos met haar vuil hande.

Bare “buy her an x5 with your housing allowance” kwaaaaa. This is the end of me,klaar! Kwakwakwakwakwa

Anyway that Anga/whoever comment kinda makes me beleive the whole ‘black women are bitter,in general’ as it was discussed on Noeleen with the metro fm personalities, last week. One hears that so and so got a new paying job,and the comments you will hear : ‘ what is going on with her relationship ketse?, is her husband still in jail ?, and more shit like that ‘ ….like wtf?? Hai maaaan!
    Did I go off topic??

  75. lolo on Tue, 7th Feb 2012 9:50 pm

I feel I have to defend u-Anga shem…I like u@Sexylin…she is a cool pretty chick with an amazing lifestyle…that being said all poor @Anga did was give a clever retort to what @Sxylin had said about JC being like a lover you are over but are too scared to leave.

@Anga’s reply was clever and quick-witted. She was not laughing @Sxylin,she was just being catty like all of us are sometimes @ a gossip site. When it suits some, people wanna pretend that this site is some church or spitual retreat. It is NOT that!!! shem laa siyahleba, siyahleka How often has the fact that poor @Manny has bought @ Oxford road been used against him. But @Manny being a chilled guy laughs it off…he is good humoured about it.@Sxylin’s husband cheated! That’s all it is no big deal! No one phuqen died. We cannot be expected to tip-toe around her ego forever! Men cheat, women cheat it is seriously not a big deal! I admit that I laughed like an idiot when I read @Anga’s retort cause it was just kak funny!

  76. sxylin on Tue, 7th Feb 2012 10:48 pm

LoL black on black hatred is really sad… I have a woman empowerment group that I joined in Jhb; ladies in business if you wanna see the bitching join that ! Black women are not going to give each other support anytime soon because they keep bringing each other down!

    I don’t have to work extra hard to be where I am; anyway I’d rather donate my husband and the bank’s money to a worthy cause than donate it to a bitter black woman who cannot stand up and make something for herself trust me @anga study and travel the world who knows u might bag a man like Mr Sxylin only without the child on the outside;

  77. LadySasha on Tue, 7th Feb 2012 11:11 pm

Death by the Gaddafi comment, lol @ Anga’s comment its very funny,Sxylin must just deal and get over it am sure the loving hubby will make her feel better anyway. @Sxylin we get it u are married to one of wealthiest man in da world and he is very loving and u have a perfect family and black sistaz are jealous, u have been singing the same song for a while now, we get it pls just Shuuuurrrup already

  81. @JoneighGALAXY™ on Wed, 8th Feb 2012 3:42 am

Whoa ladies. Hold on a minute here. What @Anga said to @Sexylin had nothing to do w/ PHD syndrome. You people are just going on about things that are irrelevant to what was posted.

@Anga simply wanted to raise a point: If @Sexylin could continue her life married to a man who goes around bonking & empregnating his wife’s best friends, then why should @Sexylin judge Queen for her choice in committing to a coloured polygamist. We should respect her choice b/c Queen seems to know what she’s doing the same way you know why took your weak husband terug, w/o being labelled a fool of a woman. Look at yourself & give Queen a break.

I don’t think @Anga is bitter of anyone’s accomplishments or supposedly rich husband, as he / she probably doesn’t know you from a bar of soap. No need to over-react.

  82. sxylin on Wed, 8th Feb 2012 5:03 am

@JG gotten already; and @Anga was responding to my comment about JC being boring and me still refusing to let go! And no I did not judge Sophie Ndaba !

Lady Sasha; give it a rest let’s not make this post about me!

  83. LadySasha on Wed, 8th Feb 2012 6:20 am

    @Sxylin of course, case closed.

Now to new news we go!

  85. sexysiren on Wed, 8th Feb 2012 8:20 am

Eish I give up,the hatred that is among women. I don think it was really necessary to attack sxylin like that @anga,do people have to be scared now to say something coz somebody will connect it to something that person once said. This issue bout sxylins hubby happened a long time ago,and she just decided to share wit fellow bloggers and som of u guys comforted her, maybe dat was the *biggest mistake she made*,so now after all dis is over she then talks bout her good life, which is then a bitter pill for some people to swaLlow. People enjoy hearing the bad stuff people are going thru, they only want you to suffer and they are willing to listen, but let somthing good happen to u they jus find a way of pulling yu down and remind you of the bad stuff. What if sxylin has found a way to deal wit hubbys cheating and has now gotten over it and is happy again, and someone jus decides to remind her of the past. Are you really proud of being the person who has to remind others of their hurtful times. Would you want the same thing happening to you. Hayi suka find something to do wit your boring life bitch.

  86. Deemag on Wed, 8th Feb 2012 9:10 am

Hehehe azange yazi; Lolo for your age I’m shocked but ke sidifferent! I am surprised!

  87. lolo on Wed, 8th Feb 2012 9:14 am

@Sexysiren you are stupid. @Anga does not hate @Sexylin, How does one liner equate to hate… go look up hate in the dictionary you buffoon…Then come back and say the same nonsense you are saying now… BITCH!

  88. lolo on Wed, 8th Feb 2012 9:22 am

    @Deemag what exactly surprises you?
Please explain slowly this ought to be interesting.

  89. Deemag on Wed, 8th Feb 2012 9:36 am

Hawuuu Lolo let’s move on bandla! I’m beginning to have a distorted image of you from what I was told not that you would care anyway I will Sit but before I do it I don’t understand how people can exchange amagama ngomntu who is probably sleeping wherever she is . Niyabhora mani!

  90. Anga on Wed, 8th Feb 2012 9:53 am

How can I be jealous of someone I dont know? I only know her from JC and I found it surprising that she thinks she can judge Queen and critisize JC like that. To sexysiren and her crew, I dont care what ya’ll say, I said what I wanted to say nahlabeka ke nina. Now dont make your problems mine.

The only person who is getting personal now is Deemag and ya’ll are just gonna ignore that. And if syxlin is sleeping, pho indaba kabani leyo? Definitely not mine. Im out!

  91. lolo on Wed, 8th Feb 2012 9:59 am

@Deemag or Sibonisiwe or Sibonile Or I really do not care much about the image you have of me…I honestly could not be bothered…I just needed you to tell me what thing about any stuff that I have written surprises you… And hun if you are gonna “diss’ me, use something other that my age… remember I,MYSELF told JC how old I am .I honestly do not have issues with my age… each year is accounted for…all 35 of them… actually turning 36 in November, since you find my age so fascinating.

Mna I laugh when things are funny… I laugh @ anyone and everyone… There are no holy cows in my book. For someone who has had dealings with M & M I’m really surprised @ you… since we are sharing stuff that surprises us. M&M is pretty and smart, and has a post gaduate qualification and has a good supportive family…Who she is married to, does not define her… She would still be M with or without your boss… so Naye uyang’mangaza! why she takes what HE did personally. He is the one who wronged her, so I do not see how when a blogger points out what HE did.. How this is an insult to @ Sexylin.

  92. Nthoentle on Wed, 8th Feb 2012 10:05 am

@Sexysiren you are so right shem! My tongue has been ABSOLUTELY EVERYWHERE!But you can rest assured that as un-fussy as I am as far as female companionship is concerned, the one place that my “filthy ” tongue REFUSES to lick would be between your thighs…Cause you see , despite the claims of your username I get a feeling that you are not all that sexy. So in all of femaledom you will be the single exception that I make. So sorry! No licking for you!

Oh please do not feel sorry or worry about my hubby, He is okay ! TRUST! Just take my word for that! Instead use your energy to find find yourself a hubby! But first you would need to get rid rid of all that stupidity clouding your brain. So I suggest you read a book! No! MOVE magazine does not count!

Konje you don’t even read that ! So start out small! Read a chappies wrapper! You might learn something…Although I’m not gonna hold my breath! I get a feeling l
That your idiocy is confined to your head! I’m sure even your blood type is A-positively stoopid!

  103. lolo on Wed, 8th Feb 2012 6:02 pm

@Sexysiren earlier I asked you to look up the word hate in the dictionary…did you manage…look under H dear…that it…there’s a good girl…Now ask someone nearby to read outloud for you, and then maybe translate in vernac for you! I hope its not clear to you that no one hates anyone hear for the simple reason that ASAZANI SILIMA!

    3. Why are people saying JC lacks content? Out of all the blogs i read, this is the one that usually has most posts a week, even on weekends.

@Sexysiren (and I use the term loosely)I have one question for you ungubani futhi uqhamuka kuphi sow’thukuthele kangaka? I can understand @Deemang putting in her two cents worth, maybe she is trying to impress her boss by defending the Mrs on a blog( I, myself would do the job I was hired to do instead of blogging to impress my superior, but hey, we are all different)

I can also understand @Nthoentle’s getting in the fray, her and @Sexylin are buddies plus @Nthoentle thinks I’m the worst bully in the blogging universe…

But you @Sexysiren (and again I use the term loosely) where do you feature in all of this, what exactly is your interest? Who are you?

You just sort of popped up unwanted and unexpected like a boil on a bride two days before her wedding! Tjo!

Since BS sorted out the IT issues, JC has been on point. so complaining about it really doesnt make sense. JC is on point wena BS so ignore abantu who have nothing to do with their time.
