In The News…
I was touched by the story of Trayvon Martin, the 17 year old black American who was shot dead by a white man who thought he looked suspicious… The LA Times puts it better:
Trayvon Martin was a 17-year-old kid walking back to his father’s house after buying a package of Skittles at a convenience store. George Zimmerman was an overzealous block watch volunteer carrying a gun. Zimmerman may have been carrying something else around with him: an attitude about black kids and where they belonged.
Martin had the bad luck to cross paths with Zimmerman. It was raining. Martin’s hoodie was up. He was on the phone with his girlfriend and, according to her, was getting nervous about the big guy following him. The guy was Zimmerman.
Zimmerman considered Martin a suspicious character — at least that’s what he was telling the 911 dispatcher he had on the line. He also told the dispatcher that “these … always get away,” according to a recording of the call that has been released. Then he took off running after Martin and uttered to the dispatcher a word that some listeners heard to be a racial epithet.
Martin, of course, was African American and, even though this gated neighborhood in Sanford, Fla., happened to be where his dad lived, in Zimmerman’s eyes, he did not belong there.
Then came a confrontation, cries for help and a gunshot.
Trayvon Martin was dead. The police who came to the scene took his body away and held it in a morgue for three days without checking out his cellphone to find someone who knew who he was. The police let Zimmerman go at the scene, saying they could not charge him since he claimed self-defense because, in Florida, a “stand your ground” law protects people who shoot first and later claim to have been threatened. So so upsetting and even more sad is that this Zimmerman guy is walking free.
The poor boy was unarmed, so I’m really waiting to hear how this guy explains why he shot him.
In local news, Helen Zille is causing an uproar of her own on Twitter calling people refugees etc. Zapiro responded with this cartoon:
In other news, the Sunday Papers are still on Mshoza and her hubby.. now that it seems there won’t be any more drama in that regard, seeing they’ve announced their split..
They have now also written about Sophie Ndaba’s new hubby, Keith Harrington and they are saying his qualifications are fake, and the institutions he claims he got them from does not exist. I don’t really care, nor believe them… and I was shocked to read that he asked his assistant to take documents to their offices to refute the claims…
Then another story thrown in there was that he disappeared for 3 days and Sophie didn’t know where he was *sigh*… Tlhakantsuke nje of a story if you ask me…
Thami Mngqolo aka Senzo on Generations from Generations and Muvhango’s Jo-Anne Reyneke have called it quits…
Sad to see relationships come to an end but that’s the not so rosy part of life…
In other good relationship news:
We also read that Thembi and Bobo from Denim are tying the knot. I love how Thembi has protected this relationship by keeping it away from the media. Way to go girl, we don’t really need to know what happens, your love life is your bizness alone!
I remember was in a flight with this guy one day… cant remember if I was from CT or DBN. I wanted to take a good look at him so I walked behind him when we got off the plane… my word is he sexy! And he walked like he knew it.. so nice one Thembi! Wish you guys all the best.
