The Zahara Paradigm
April 18, 2012 by MaBlerh
Okay, I’ve read everyone’s opinion on the whole Zahara saga with TS Records. I actually loved the fact that it was on both big Sunday tabloids and they covered the story differently. Sunday Sun gave us Zahara’s side of the story and Sowetan Sunday World gave us the story from the sister. The sister apparently claims that Zahara is being cheated off her money and they haven’t received the things that THEY were promised as a family. Zahara allegedly responded by stating that it’s her money and she will spend it how she sees fit. The public has gone on to question why is she still living with the Nciza family, why is she doing chores, why doesn’t she have her own car, etc? Then the “accountants and auditors” went on to try and calculate how much money she has made and how much should approximately be in her bank accounts. I found that completely ridiculous as nobody had receipts, but that’s a story for another day.
I first would like to address the Sunday World story, if Zahara’s sister really did go to the papers uyaphapha. As Black people we must stop having this sense of entitlement when it comes to things that are not ours. Some of you reading this article have calculated how much you stand to gain should your parents or siblings kick the bucket. Some of you have strained relationships with your sister/brother in-laws because you believe that you have a right to comment regarding your siblings financial affairs. Some of you believe that because your older sibling works they are obliged to help you financially. Zahara owes her sister NOTHING, in fact, she owes her family NOTHING. Nobody is obligated to support their family should they succeed financially.
You help your family out because it is something that comes from the goodness of your heart. The artist that gave us Loliwe was not Zahara & the Mkutukana’s. That girl was up on those concert stages by herself and she was scared to death on that swing at the Metro FM awards by herself. Therefore the allegations that the family was promised a farm and a car, which will stay in the Eastern Cape for when Zahara visits, is just ridiculous. TS Records and Zahara owe the Mkutukana’s nothing.
Having said that, I did an interview with Zahara last year in December and she informed me that she extended their family home and upgraded the utilities to the point that her parents are the first ones in the village to flush. I believe this because on the picture on Sunday World, Zahara’s mom is standing next to a freshly painted big house that is painted with the same colour as the freshly painted shack that they claimed the family still lives in. Attention to detail, people!
Then there’s the issue of Zahara living at the Nciza’s, doing housework and not having a car. What people do not get is that JoBurg is a daunting place. It overwhelmed me and I am a city boy. It gets even worse when you mix that with the cutthroat entertainment industry where people in the industry jump to offer you cocaine if they see that success is looming and some prominent women play the role of escort agents using young female in the industry. Therefore I understand if Zahara prefers to stay with a family unit that will somehow shield her from all these vultures. I can just picture what could have been if Zahara had lived on her own and was completely independent, as extreme as my scenario is but it is highly possible, she would probably be on coke and drinking like she belongs on my father’s side of the family. She would be in the papers for all the wrong things.
I am glad that the Nciza’s took her in and are essentially protecting her. As for the chores, as Lelo so eloquently put it, celebrity or no celebrity if you live with me we are all going to contribute to keeping the house clean. Even my celebrity friends know that my house is ran like a self-catering lodge. If you visit me regularly and expect me to offer you something to drink when you can clearly stand and open the fridge, you will die of thirst. You’re a celebrity to your fans, ikwami lana. I read some tweets about a car being a necessity, well that is true if you don’t have anybody willing to drive you to where you need to be. I have never seen a tweet or a facebook status about Zahara being seen in a taxi, so essentially, nobody is being abused. I would be so happy if TK or Nhlanhla offered to drive me around JoBurg.
The last thing that annoyed me was when I saw the tweets directed at DJ Sbu and Nhlanhla Nciza. It is just sad what people use twitter for. You can’t read a tabloid, make up your mind and then go on to attack people. Nobody knows for sure that TS Records scammed Zahara and from what I read on the papers, there is nothing to conclude that. All that was in the papers was vague speculations driven by an agenda to create controversy. Even if TS Records was scamming Zahara, they are not that arrogant and stupid to do it in this fashion. That is why on Ukhozi FM we decided to poke fun at the whole story because there was really nothing newsworthy. That’s my 47c on this whole nonsense.

Ok, so its clear that SW didn’t make the whole story up cos the sister even went on facebook to further talk bout it. Ok,but I still don’t get why would TK promise them all those things? Why didn’t he just tell them that they’re getting jack when Zahara makes it big. But I wonder if its true that she asks for airtime from her mom cos seriously.
Nerlee on Wed, 18th Apr 2012 3:14 am
Or maybe Zahara is the quiet type (can’t stand up 4 herseld) and she complained to her sister then the sister thought going to the papers will be a solution.Maybe B4 all this zikhona izinto ezimbi uZahara used to say about the Ncizas to her sister kaloku zange kwamnandi ukuhlala emzini.

People need to mind their own business. Some of them work hard e-MacDonald’s for R5 p/h and are being ripped off by our capitalist society but they aren’t recognizing it. When it comes to other people’s pockets they want to start talking. But again, I think Zahara might have complained to her sisters like @Nerlee said.
Truth is, musicians don’t make that much money from just singing. If you didn’t write or produce the song then you aren’t going to get much. Even international artist know that. The only time they make money is through concerts and other business deals like being ambassadors and starting their own businesses. The money is in songwriting and producing.

Nobody is obligated to support their family should they succeed financially. – I hope these women who sleep with rich married men with the EXPECTATION to be bought houses and cars can also learn from this statement and not be hypocrites (sp). Men ONLY owe their families and not the side dishes.

If I were a 23 year old music sensation. The writer of a song that became the soundtrack to a whole nation. If everyone knew and sang along to my songs, everone from a two year old struggling with potty training to a 80 struggling with ill-fitting dentures. If I were that person mna, a multi award winner and a double platinum winner I would want:
1. A place of my own
So that I could have family over and dates overnight without being nannied by my boss.
2. As big and as scary JHB is she needs to face it with all its temptationa and horror storries. This hand holding looks a bit stiffling to me, its like they are treating her like an infant.
3. That being said I feel a persons lifestyle should mirror their achievements, in this particular case there is a disconnect.
4. Record sales aside Zahara has been performing live virtually twice a month since she blew up! Those monies I hope lend up in her bank account and not in Sbu and Ncizas.
5. People are making it seem like TS records does not have a bad history of ripping off its talent. Now the Ncizas are being hailed as this nice, kind , philanthropists who are looking after Zahara and sheltering from the big bad music world!
6. The Ncizas protecting Zaraha is seriously like asking a convicted peodophile to babysit your daughter.

@Plastic yes I would this child has been headlining live events often. The people who had the pleasure to see her perform live payed in advance and @Computicket and @ the gate. This to me says she ought to have some cash at her disposal, barring the proceeds of her record sales. I have figured out that as much as we are now jumping up and down and claiming how smart she is by being prudent with her cash, Fact remains that record companies are notorious about ripping musicians off! Zahara is a naïve artist who I get a feeling is just grateful for the opportunity to finally exercise her God- given talent. People like her are prime targets for vultures like Sbu.
Majesa TheExecutive on Wed, 18th Apr 2012 9:42 am
I see Mablerh is using his power in JC to protect his celebrity friends. At the end of the day we know that power & money 9 out of 10 time will change people around you. I’m not saying Sbu & the Nciza’s are guilty but due to the history of the music industry there is possibility, remember Zahara was signed as an unknown & TS could not have predicted how the market would react, so common business sense says the agreement would benefit them more.
Mablerh you also go on about as sense of entitlement, did it ever occur to you that the TS records have a greater sense of entitlement to Zahara cause they are the ones who turned her from nothing to a phenom, did it ever occur to you that Zahara will have a slaver-master complex towards the Nciza’s cause they gave here the success & forget that at the end of the day its just business, if things go bad she will be dropped just like Sash Man & Izinyoka. To blatantly attack Mkutukana’s like this shows that you really had no intention of being impartial, I mean if I see that other people are using my superstars brothers money, wouldn’t you think it is normal to also lay a claim, I can’t let my rich father buy a Lamborghini for my step mom while nna I drive a Polo.
If Zahara is living with the Nciza’s then where are her sisters suppose to sleep if they visit here.

We all need to live, make mistakes, fall and get up. Zahara needs to live her life independently, have good and bad friends, make her own decisions and conlusions about things nje. She did say on Metro FM though that she is in the process of buying a car and a house. Most of the toughest, responsible and successful people in the world were independent from an early age. Independence teaches one about life. What makes them think that when she is on her own she will make sound decisions??

@Plastic am I to understand that you are saying it is okay for her to perform most weekends and not benefit financially from her efforts?
Are you saying because the music industry is notorious for ripping artists off they should just shush and keep singing?
There is difference between me as an employee with a monthly salary that is negotiated annually and an artist who gets paid according to how many gigs they perform and how much each gig brings. The would obviously be a difference in rates. Between two concerts if for an example one concert is held at a stadium and the are 10 000 people and a concert held @ a casino sitting 1500, The descent thing would be to give her a percentage of the total earnings and not a set fee.

My Busby purse ( ndimdala kaloku) had every card from every conceivable clothing shop! That fist year of working I used to spend almost 80% of my salary servicing clothing account debt! I expected more from you since you are in the industry then again you have to suck up for the same reason. I had my reservations about the story and I heard Zahara all over the airwaves doing damage control.
I understand that you ran a management company for artists or something like that so Mabhler tell me what logic does TS sending Zahara to deal with those interviews on her own makes? Why didn’t any of the management team members handle that.
Unfortunately by sending her to deal with this on her own they just proved that they do not give a damn about her but just want to save their asses. It is unheard of that a celebrity of Zahara position would have to answer questions about something on her while her management remains silent.
TK and Sbu have yet to even acknowledge the story so why send Zahara to go take the heat for it?? If they cared they would have protected her. Lucky the interviews were not harsh but this could have been a disaster had this interviewers been more pressing on her.
The story might not be entirely true but the way TS records dealt with it did not do much to prove it wrong.

Lmao Lolo,I think we really have to agree to disagree on this one. If there’s some truth in Zahara’s side of the story “I still say,I feel the same”…I would do exactly as she did, *not unless she was forced to- akatsho ke yena kodwa*
I will never strive to have a better home in the City, such that “its 100times more expensive, beautiful” than my real Eastern Cape home or my moms’ home.Sorry…nje.
You should come to Cape Town, and you will see how successful people would stay in the normal township houses (make them beautiful,of coz) ,even the millionaires, buy their expensive cars, save money for December and go home, changing their homes and parent’s standard of living…*I believe that Zahara wants to do the same.
People come from different back-grounds.As for Zahara,I don’t believe that “she would want to own a home costing a million,without/before buying a good house for her father)”
So its so *not mature* to strictly compare Zahara to other artists who have fleshy cars and perfect homes (they are still on debts ke phof)…its really not necessary to feel that pressure
e.g. Some celebs have parents who are doctors and teachers,so they never had to buy anything more expensive for their Parents…so the situation is not the same.Amen!

@Makgotso, the poor girl is thrown in the deep end to deal with this mess and all DJSbu is doing is pushing for people to vote for Zahara at the SAMAs. Zahara owes her sister NOTHING, in fact, she owes her family NOTHING. Nobody is obligated to support their family should they succeed financially. That’s a rich statement Mabler and very misleading, you have been political correct on this one, you know as a black person that most of us our success is often shared by the family, there is no many sane black people who have made it in life and want not to improve their family house or empower their siblings in the name of ‘not owing them nothing’
Your article is full of emotional undertones, you need to detach yourself from Zahara as a fan or friend and be realistic about some of the issues,I hope if you are friends with Zahara you will not be repeating this stamement that she owes her family nothing, before Zahara and the fame there is her family and probably after fame they will also be there, cant say the same about some of her friends…

@H2g – I never said Zahara should not have addressed the issue. There are ways of dealing with this kind of thing that is why there are spokespersons, publicists and managers. The way this thing was done raises a lot of concern especially given that the management has barely said a word yet Zahara is doing damage control on her own. There should atleast have been a statement from the label.
I think the problem for me goes back to the issue of publicists not protecting their clients but themselves. I read an article on Phil Mphela’s blog about the same issue a while back. Can you imagine if Zahara got a Debra Patta like questioning in those interviews. How would the girl have handled that?
Uthando on Wed, 18th Apr 2012 1:44 pm
This——–> I understand that you ran a management company for artists or something like that so Mabhler tell me what logic does TS sending Zahara to deal with those interviews on her own makes? Why didn’t any of the management team members handle that.
Unfortunately by sending her to deal with this on her own they just proved that they do not give a damn about her but just want to save their asses. It is unheard of that a celebrity of Zahara position would have to answer questions about something on her while her management remains silent.
@Fab-G mara on monday on Ukhozi fm Linda Sibiya spoke to both TK Ncinza and Zahara nje what do you mean she was alone they were both talking mos bephendula imibuzo
H2G on Wed, 18th Apr 2012 2:01 pm
that is what people don’t want Fab: to make Zahara an Egg who can’t handle the media or her own record company.
Zaharah handled the matter in a mature way.She said things based on her emotions, thoughts and not only as a professional musician.
Imagine if S’bu was acting as Zahara’s spoke person whereas he is also one of the accused people. What were people gonna say?
That “yeah its true, why is Zahara not the one telling us her side of the story…ini’ini…it means that Ts is hiding something…”
People have a lot to say on this issue, thus I see no other good way of handling this crisis…*side-eyes ANC memebrs*
On your point Fab: Zahara and TS records(S’bu & TK Nciza) went to the radio station(not Zahara only)….
H2G on Wed, 18th Apr 2012 2:06 pm
Deborah Patta is just a normal girl with big mouth njengo Hellen Zille…so please Fab,don’t give her too much credit.
Khanyi Mbau & Jullius Malema sorted her out!!!
Only liars get fried in Deborah Patta’s show…According to Zaharah,She had nothing to hide. But would do anything to protect her family…Which doesn’t deserve this (her parents)
She went to various stations.
Metro fm: spoke her Xhonglish’
Mhlobo wenene fm: and spoke her Xhosa
Motweding fm: and spoke her Tswanglish
Lesedi fm: and spoke her seXhotho
So please, I don’t see the relevance of your point Fab. *ke maswabie nganeso!*
Monei on Wed, 18th Apr 2012 2:21 pm
@fab G, TK was also there on Metro with Zahara.
honestly, i feel had she not said those things with her own mouth, ppl would’ve sed they can’t believe TS is hiding her and they can’t speak on her behalf when it is their abuse in question. u can’t pls everybody.
Monei on Wed, 18th Apr 2012 2:23 pm
yes, well said H2G. in response to Fab G
Monei on Wed, 18th Apr 2012 2:25 pm
u guys aren’t helping zahara or TS yet. didnt u hear what she said? frm nxt wk u must buy tickets to her live dvd recording ko carnival. as some believe, this is the point of the hype.
@FrancyNkonyane on Wed, 18th Apr 2012 2:28 pm
LMFAO @H2G Those languages!!! HAHAHAHAHA
Mina my issue isn’t about Zahara. Its purely about what Mablerh has written. Mablerh- I wish to see you living at you boss’s place, him/her handling your finances simply because you unable or mature enough to do so on your own. In fact, I wish I could see you abandoning your family, and you being a puppet to your boss fela.
Pumpkin2701 on Wed, 18th Apr 2012 2:35 pm
I have been silent blogging for a while and I have concluded that some of you here as stupid. so so so stupid. What happened to respecting other people’s opinions? This is Mablerh’s opinion and just because it differs from yours does not mean that he is buying face. Dont get personal, its just an healthy debate. If you believe that wena as soon as you become succesful, your siblings and cousins’ children automatically become your burden then state so, clearly and like a grown up, asseblief.
Nna I think we should leave Zahara alone. if vele o baa tima tjhelete ko gagabo, its their business. You guys ranting and raving here about TS records wont change anything and even if it does, it wont make a difference in your lives. le duletsi taba tsa di celeb le palelwa ke tsa lena. haai mahn! Zahara a se ngwana wa bo lena. I have 3 succesful sisters and I dont expect anything from them. Everyone carves their own success. Im in school to attain that. A sense of entitlement just because my sisters are hotshot engineers wont get me anywhere. As long as they do good by my parents its fine. Zahara helped her parents ko gae and thats enough, haai mahn. why does the sister want a car ko gae if the owner wont even be there to drive it? gape basotho le rena re rata go ba bo mashaela phezulu..

This reminds me of a Zulu saying. ‘Ifa leziwula lidliwa izihlakaniphi’ let’s hope its not the case. for Zahara.
flawleslee on Thu, 19th Apr 2012 11:28 am
yes was wrong for her sisters to go the tabloid (if they did) to say all the things they said , celebrity or not Zahara is their sister if they had a problem with anything that id happening in her life, Im sure they could have sat her down at told her what they thought, even though everyone thinks they have a sense of entitlement to her money , everyone is making everything about the issue here any ways.
I just have an issue with people saying she doesn ‘t have to do shit for her family because she doesnt owe any one anything true that “AMEN” but I strongly believe that if we talk about owing angcabangi ukuthi she would able to pay them back in any way , before ZAHARA THE SUPERSTAR- was whatever her name is toi her family , they raised the person we know , always been there for her when we didnt know her they loved her and took care with the little they had , the sisters angizingeni ke but you can’t be making it big and forgeting where you come from because trust me when you go broke in the big bad Joburg and evryone is talikng about how broke you are you will run back home to those people you are disregarding and I am not refering to ZAHARA as I don’t even like her music, I dont even care is she has money or not. But my point is we do not necessarily owe our families anything but the truth is you are who you are because of them anything you become they contributed be it your parents or siblings. Talking about owing if they had to calculate how and I mean just in rands you will go broke. so please asingakhohlwa la esiphuma khona ubhizi uyachoma uthengela i club yonke utshwala endlini balambile noma bahlala endlini ewayo , abantwana bakini bahamba ngezinyawo nge winter baya eskolweni just cause “you dont owe anyone anything” that is just sad what kind of a person does that make you. When your sister calls nge month end sewuvala i phone ngoba uthi nabo abahambe bayosebenza , yes they should! but are you helping them get on their feet and actually get a job. Angiphathike uma befunda eskole bayithathephi imali especially if your parent/s are not working. God blesses us to be a blessing to others, so lemadlana yakho angakuhlanyisi cause the tables do turn in this life.
