Idols: How Is it Possible?

The following contestants made it to the Top 10 of this year’s Idols:

 

  1. Chloe Kiley (24) from Cape Town
  2. Dominic Neill (20) from Johannesburg
  3. Khaya Mthethwa (25) from Durban
  4. Melissa Allison (23) from Port Elizabeth
  5. Monde Msutwana (30) from Pretoria
  6. Nosipho Mngomezulu (22) from Soshanguve
  7. Obakeng Ramaboa (26) from Munsieville 
  8. Shekhinah “Sheki” Donnell (17) from Durban
  9. Simphiwe Gwegwe (23) from Port Nolloth
  10. Tshidi Tenyane (28) from Thokoza

For being in the Top 10, they’ve already won:

  • Branded Customized Luggage from Ford
  • R10 000.00 in cash from KFC

Now that we’ve got that out of the way…

As much as I’m happy with the racial profile of the Top 10, I can’t help but wonder…. just how real is all this? After all the talk and complaints about the past seasons being too white, all of a sudden the Top 10 just so happens to look like this? Mmmh… I smell a rat.

But before someone says we don’t know what we want… Congratulations to the Top 10. Will be glued to the screen till the finale.

    I never watched last season, so I can’t comment about the color issue. But from watching the 1st episode and channel 199 of the auditions, I’m ecstatic at the top ten. Would have loved to see Treasure and Maryke in there somewhere though coz I thought they were good. Matt was one HOT Mulungu neh. I just don’t get Dominic how did he make it past Theatre week. #TeamSimphiwe all the way to Top Three.

    Intshekho yakhe and those tiny oufits were a bit too much, she has a great voice though, if only she wudn’t scream so much. She killed her solo at theatre week.

    My dream world: I will not sleep when the voting time comes,ngoba I will be busy with the ‘dislike’ button on the voting polls to make -ve votes for all those mlungus .Then in the top 3,we will have Khaya, Shekinah and Tshidi. On the 2nd last week,I wish that Khaya gets a throat bug to give Shekinah/Tshidi a chance to out perfom him and win.Khaya has a music career kick started already moes.

    Wow! :o , But then again might because of the changing demographics. I read somewhere that 50% or so Dstv viewers are Black. I mean look at the soapie The Wild, half the cast is black. Even Masterchef SA was not entirely white like MNet local productions years ago. Viewer demographics are changing , I guess its a good thing that MNet is welcoming change. I might be wrong but that is just my 2cents. :)

    Maryke’s skimpy dresses worked against her, she really deserves to be Top 10. Did you guys notice how *appropriately* dressed she was on Sunday?

    Be on the look out for Simphiwe, he is going to win this. I have been following Idols since forever and with this year’s one, there was not a lot of white people who auditioned and were not good. Yes, we never had a black winner remember Puselotso, she deserved to whin shem mara ke, i guess we got tired of hearing that blacks don’t vote and now we are putting our money where our mouth is.

    I would also replace Nosipho and Chloe with Candi and Maryke anyday, but yah whats done is done!

    As for predictions mna i have learnt not to get my hopes up shem, i vote and vote, and hear other people also saying they voting mar our favourites never go through, remember Big brother last year? Even this year am voting then you hear that Edith had 0 votes when i know i voted a hundred times for her!

    I have a good feeling that Khaya will not win. Not because he does not deserve to win but because he should not even be in Idols in the first place. The guy is already an established musician, already has an audience, a lot (and I mean a looot) of people love him in JC. Unfair!

    With that said, I hope the top 3 is made up of anyone except Khaya, Dominic and Chloe.

    The sudden “blackness” of the whole thing proves it’s rigged!

    Simphiwe all the way! I’m happy with Maryke gone she must perform for an adult audience, men, who will enjoy her seductive moves and outfits.

    Blacks can be racist though! Quick to point out the whiteness and blackness of people, let’s vote for our favourites. Just like some people think Madonna, Jlo can sing and buy their music making them mega superstars, don’t blame whites who think Dominic and Chloe are talented and vote for them, let the voting do the talking, pleeeaaase vote!! And forget about race, its votes that count not race!

    i think maryke or should have been in the competition, i don’t feel Monde at all, i don’t see him going far in the competition, o na le excitement e ngata for his age, i mean o ka se hsape twalaza singing pina ya Chris brown, i refuse, yena le Obakeng must do something about their excitement…i’m so glad Dumi was voted out shem.

    Its obvious what is happening here! The producers and what what’s have decided that this year a black person will win regardless of votes… How the white ppl where just sent packing durng theatre week. Only 2 whites in top 10 haha never rmbr white ppl have always voted the MOST! Its UNFORTUNaTE that a black person can only win Idols thru this kind of way!! The person won’t b a true idol 2me.. It would be better when a black person wins under normal circumstances.. But we will see @the end maybe DOM will get more votes and win and there will be NO Rigging of votes!

    @Kamza I know but don’t you think its not about ‘race’ per se but that what you relate and farmilia with. This blog could vote Bonang over Jeannie D for being sexier, you’ll vote a Kaizer Junior over Beckham for the same.

    These whites sell records in the Afrikaans market, they are hugely successful, so when they vote for them, I don’t think it is to spite us but it is what appeals to them..

    Nope @siyasanda you are not the only one. Mna iam voting for Obakeng. Too many people are voting for Khaya. If you guys dont vote for the others nizobona. UKhaya wenu will end on finals with uMlungu and we all know abelungu voe like crazy. I say we vote to balance the numbers and have black on black on top 2.

    I feel for Khaya Yazi, all he did was enter Idols to see how far his talent could get him outside the Gospel industry, kodwa he’s being judged kangaka. Whether the top ten is too black or not, truth is those contestants are talented and let’s just vote siyekele ipolitiki shuh. Khaya hasn’t even won and already so much talk about votes rigging. Can we watch idols and conclude later, when we have voted and the winner has been chosen.

    I remember reading an article a few weeks ago that Mnet is trying to get a black winner, and I’m starting to believe that. This was even before the top 18 were announced.

    This does not mean that the top 10 are not talented, they’ve always been….but the sudden change in the voting pattern raises eyebrows.

    A lot of blacks have always had Dstv, this happened before and during the world cup time. So I don’t understand the argument that it’s because more than 50% of subscribers are blacks. It’s been like that for a while, so why the sudden change in the voting pattern now?

    @Siyasanda…..I agree with you! Even his first audition was ok, it’s the Super Bass audition that was out of this world….but the one after that was just ok…..and Simphiwe outshone him that week.

    I don’t see anything wrong with mnet wanting a black winner this year, it happens everywhere. Quotas are a part of life. We have beeen complaining that the competition has been dominated by whites and when we are set for a black winner, we have all sorts of theories and speculations. Actually it took longer for mnet to bow to pressure, mos you know with Miss SA that we give each other turns.
