The Week’s Sports Round Up
July 27, 2012 by Featured Guest Writer
A bittersweet end to what started as a fantastic sporting week for South Africa in England.
Banyana Banyana were thumped 4-1 by the 4th ranked Women’s football team in the World. The match got off to a cracking start with the Swedish scoring in the 7th minute courtesy of their Captain Nilla Fischer. The second and third goals came in quick succession ending off the first half 3-0 up. Banyana regrouped in the second half and managed to score a goal courtesy of Portia Modise. Sweden however hit back immediately and scored their fourth goal. The Match ended at 4-1. Banyana face off against Canada in their second group F match against on Saturday.
Earlier in the week:
The Proteas edged closer to acquiring the number one test ranking in the World after scoring over 600 runs and bowling out England twice eventually defeating them by an inning and 12 runs at the Oval Cricket Ground in London. Graeme Smith led by example scoring 100 runs on his 100th test match, the star of the show and Man of the Match Hashim Amla scored 311 runs becoming the first South African to score a triple hundred in a test match, whilst Dale Steyn clinched his 18th five wicket haul.
- England 385 and 240
- South Africa 638/ 2 declared
The second match of the 3 match test series takes place on the 2nd of August at Headingley in Leeds
Last Sunday, South African golfer Ernie Els won the British open making this his first major title in 10 years. 42 year old Earls defeated Australian Adam Scott by one stroke to walk away with his 4th Major Championship and second British Open title.
I am definitely looking forward to the official start of the Olympics and the Black label Cup match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates this weekend.
Let us know if you are going to the stadium and what your predictions are for the match.

Tjo Banyana!I changed the channel after the 3rd goal, I couldn’t take it anymore plus i didn’t know that keeper so I was blaming her. But I hear they were not so bad in the 2nd half. So hopefully we will do better in the next game. Good luck to my team for tommorrow.#Khosi4lyf
