SA Needs A New Celebrity Gossip TV Show
August 8, 2012 by Brown Shuga
Rumour has it eTV is working on a brand new celebrity gossip show and that they are currently casting for the presenter/s. A month or so ago while watching a Khanyi Mbau surgery insert on Real Goboza, I tweeted that eTV needed to do something and have their own show so I welcome the news of a new show.
I am especially happy that the show will not be on SABC, because we know true freedom is found on the other channels. You only need to look at shows like Loyiso Gola’s LNN to see how great it is to watch a show where you can see there is no “you can’t do this, you can’t talk about that, you can’t say this.” Headline is not brilliant television, but it works, simply because there aren’t restrictions and the team is FREE to do the show the way they want to.
While getting ready to launch this new show, I hope eTV will look at Real Goboza (which seriously needs help), V Entertainment (which is actually a good show), FLASH, which was previously on SABC 3 as well as Headline, and see what works and doesn’t work.
What the new show should definitely NOT even attempt is to cover events. We have a situation currently where you watch V Entertainment, Headline, Real Goboza, All Access and you are guaranteed to see the exact same faces at the exact same events in the exact same outfits. IF the new show decide they have to cover events because we lack celebrity content in this country, then they have to insist that they get exclusive coverage and are the only TV crew covering whatever event they go to.
One other important decision is the choice of presenter.
A channel should leave casting to the production company. I honestly believe that’s the only way you can blame the producers if your show doesn’t perform well. Channels in this country look at who’s in the social pages or on twitter (recent trend) and then tell producers we want so and so… It is at the producer’s best interest to have the show perform so it can be on air for long, coz that’s how they make money so they can be trusted them to choose the best candidates for the job. If you’ve ever heard of “It’s who you know.” trust me, it exists. Often people get TV jobs because they know someone and that’s what keeps the real talent on the streets.
We have so many talented youngsters out there and what’s even worse is when people are told to come audition when the producers already know who they want. Sad.
Eh, I seem to have slightly deviated from the point…
I wish eTV all the best with the new show… there is definitely space for it in the market. RGB has lost the plot, it is a little too slow, perhaps they need to jack up the pace a bit, stay true to the show’s name by focussing more on news, lose the international news report Phat Joe does if they don’t buy footage, get Phat Joe to stop interrupting his guests, 2 minutes is short enough as it is, worse when the host talks for 1:15 of the time.
Headline & V Entertainment are on DSTV so I can’t talk much about them.. the majority don’t get to see them. We need a FRESH celebrity gossip show on welfare TV.

You mean a TRUE Celebrity Gossip&Scandal(ngamathe nolwimi) TV Show, tired of Familiar & Associates posing as celebz on our flat screens… Yeah we need.
sweetbabe on Wed, 8th Aug 2012 8:18 am
I love V Entertainment… i like the way they present hthe show, and their voice people make you enjoy the show

Include Selimathunzi to that list

@ BS and Vesa, TV gets really boring when you watch the exact same events captured 4 or 5 different times, with the same people. Its like watching re-runs of one show on different days, times, and channels!
Vesa on Wed, 8th Aug 2012 8:56 am
@Neria….boring is an understatement! What’s worse is that they even interview the same people all the time!
LadyMillion on Wed, 8th Aug 2012 9:39 am
RGB shame! ur left scratching ur head thinking errrr did i miss the gossip? all they do is ask zelebs (when covering those event) stupid questions, like “whats a must have for this winter” “what was ur first job” etc
ReallY??? is that gossip, hayi angazi yaz
Buhlebonga on Wed, 8th Aug 2012 10:14 am
If I was working on that show, I’d definitely have fun with it.
We don’t have a paparazzi system in South Africa- imagine if e.TV would start having a paparazzi system in their? Imagine if they ask their viewers to contribute candid shots of celebrities, either caught doing dodgy things, eating while on a cleansing diet, at a strip club while they have a wholesome family image and the best, finding out where they are and gong to pester the celebrities and see their reaction on the show!
Then of course invite the celeb to defend themselves/ or to explain why they did such…
BS, why don’t we have a Blind Items thing on JustCurious? They’re HUGE in the US and we can actually report on rumours, without naming who they are… not only will that keep us guessing, but JC bloggers have great gossip and with that it could be revealed who is who on the Blind Item, without Just Curious revealing who it is- therefore protecting themselves from being sued… Think about it.
golden diva on Wed, 8th Aug 2012 10:49 am
Yeah 80% of the celeb news covered on V Entertainment are international news. Are our celebs thaaat well behaved?
Thats a brilliant idea Buhlebonga!
@FrancyNkonyane on Wed, 8th Aug 2012 10:52 am
Morning
I trust etv to work proper here (I don’t think I’ll get disappointed).
Talking about covering the same events and speaking to the same celebs…Yerrrr I was so irritated when I read an unknown Blog on Durban/July, which displayed pics of people wearing beautiful, and theme appropriate garments…and thought hau, we don’t even get to see these kinda hidden faces anymore, just the same people all the freaken time.
Abo Minnie will get spoken to on all the tv shows, and I’m thinking “where are other people, seriously…BAPHI???” SMH
I hope it becomes not so common

dejane on Wed, 8th Aug 2012 11:53 am
V Entertainment always with a Rihanna story. Almost if not everyday. That’s my only problem with them.
Mokgethwa TheChosenOne on Wed, 8th Aug 2012 12:32 pm
@All as far as V Entertainment is concerned…hands off people, this team is doing a damn good job, & nothing about the show needs improvement, I understand there target market & they are perfect for that. As for RGB, Headlines & Selimathunzi, I understand that they are fighting for the same news makers, & we have to admit that there are few of those, especially since South Africa is so harsh to tabloids, judging by how much Sunday World gets attacked.
As for the Mika Stefano issue, I have already made peace with the fact that every year there will always be 1 celebrity that annoyed the hell out of me & he will be featured every week in every gossip show.
e.g
2012 – Mika Stefano
2011 – Nonhle Thema,
2010 – Tinus Crouse,
2009 – Khanyi Mbau,

And Vuzu is making my Mondays by broadcasting “THE BRAXTON FAMILY VALUES”…That reality show is hilarious, the best I must say
bongi on Wed, 8th Aug 2012 1:26 pm
@ cutie you can say that again- The Braxtons show is better then KUWTK *My opinion*..and i already have a Tamar at home…my eldest daughter likes her lol..

Kwaaaa at Etta Rose….modisane! Wa ebaka Olebak!!
I also can’t wait for teh new show, and i hope it’ll be crisp and be presented by a new haute face, or even 2 presenters.
Cool idea BuhleBonga…maybe you should even suggest that to Etv…scratch that, they are probably reading this as we type.
posh on Wed, 8th Aug 2012 2:10 pm
In SA Gossip reporters/papparazi are very close friend with celebs, others manage those celebs, so don’t expect jucy gossip, even JC toned down and conformed to the status quo
Eyh2Jee on Wed, 8th Aug 2012 3:07 pm
@Mokgethwa
Lolest at your list.
For now: Mika Stefano irritates the hell out of me.He says stupid stuff and appear unnecessarily on these shows (Uyanda Mbuli is in trouble Nkosi yam!)…Kabelo Mabalane and Lunga Shabalala must be tired by now…they are forever mentioned by Mika.
Neria on Wed, 8th Aug 2012 5:37 pm
I think what we miss is a show that will have presenters that dont hold back, that will report to us the viewers at home things as they are point blank. The problem as Posh says, is that these very same ‘known’ presenters are friends with celebrities and so the presenting and mgosi is therefore biased (think Pearl Thusi with the Fistaz expose`- twitter went mad with people swearing at her and calling her all sorts of names). Now if you are Pearl, or anybody else who wants to make it in the industry, you then start to shut up and fall in line, for fear of burning bridges, or as we say in tswana, o tshaba go itlhakola ka shaga! What we need is an unknown person (s) presenting the show, who wont give a rats ass what anybody thinks…Lol
kamzababy on Wed, 8th Aug 2012 6:56 pm
journalists must be asked to present the show
