David Tlale New York Fashion Week Show

September 12, 2012 by

One of the highlights for me this week was attending South African powerhouse designer David Tlale’s New York Fashion Week debut at the Mercedes Benz tents.  In the words of US Vice President Joe Biden “this is a big freaking deal”.

As you may know NYFW is where all the top designers in the world (I’m talking Oscar de La Renta, DKNY, Zac Posen, Tracy Reese etc) showcase their collections so it’s an understatement of the year to say that David was in excellent company.

This was David’s first ever stand alone debut at Lincoln Center so expectations were incredibly high and man, did David nail it. I mean he bought his A-game! I have to be honest, I saw his collection at the SA consulate a few months ago, and this week’s collection definitely took it up another notch. The NYFW collection was visually titillating, full of dramatic flair and just all around awesome!

When I walked in to the show, I immediately spotted Dr. Precious Motsepe. A friend of mine introduced the two of us and we chatted for a little bit. She immediately complimented me on my skirt and we talked about Russell Simmons’s upcoming trip to SA, her hubby’s involvement in Art of Life (Russell’s charity) and of course David’s collection.  The show had many key players involved to pull it off and I suppose Dr. Motsepe’s was on hand via her African Fashion International organization.  She is an accomplished woman in her own right but it blows my mind to think she’s married to a billionaire! Can you imagine how FAB their life is? I digress.. back to the David.

The collection was not your typical runway show; it was what is called a presentation. Meaning the models stand in one place and the guest’s move around the room to see the pieces.

According to the press release “David’s collection in New York is not simply about translating South African design for a North American audience- but rather the transcendence of work through and beyond cultural nuances, and the delivery of work to the global consumers”.

I suspect that South Africa’s best-kept secret is about to become a worldwide phenomenon. Now from what I am hearing, actress Angelina Jolie was backstage prior to David’s show. Word on the street is that the soon to be Mrs. Brad Pitt was enamored with Mr. Tlale’s clothing. Can you imagine her wearing a David Tlale dress on the red carpet?? That would be HUGE!

Don’t we just love this piece? This red sparkly number with the cape is everything. I would so rock that!

I also fell in love with this sheer black dress. I love how the lapels are strategically placed to have a little bit of coverage in the cleavage area.

This black cocktail dress with the feathers on the shoulders is also hot!

The crew from SABC’s Top Billing was also on the scene talking to folks about the fab clothing. They interviewed me about the gorgeous garments, so hopefully my segment makes it on air!

Shout out to Vista K, David’s publicist. He recognized me through Just Curious, you see how Brown Shuga is bringing people together across the world? Love her!

I also got a chance to chat with David Tlale backstage after the show, check out our quick interview about the woman who wears his collection, launching in the US and tips of slimming your figure.

What do you think of David’s collection?

@Makho, your hair chief!! I like very much

That mustard blouse in pic #2, that mabele exposing black dress on pic 5, …….yooo I want, even feather dress. Wonder how much they are, phela this price-on-request business is not easy, I am just scared of requesting a price and then find out it’s one of those stay-in-your-lane-with-your-tealady-salary prices. The guilt of going silent on the person who gave you the price or even walking out of these kind of stores; Hai ngeke

    When are we having a Win-A-David-Tlale-Piece competition#runs away fast#

Is that Jen Sue on the second last picture?

Heeee, watseba if a boyfriend pitched wearing that mustard short, ko mo dumba with immediate effect. Hauwa..that should only be worn by David.

First and foremost…..I wouold like to say, THANK YOU DAVID TLALE FOR NOT GOING GAGA HAIR, IN NYC! *HUGE SIGH*, PHELA THOSE ‘PLANTED’ DREADLOCKS LEFT ME SPEECHLESS, WORSE WHEN YOU DECIDED TO WRAP THEM AROUND YOUR HEAD LIKE A TRADITIONAL MARIKANA MINER’S WIFE!!!

Secondly….co what what everything Miranda said, everything! hahahahahahahahahaha….#death by “stay-in-your-lane-with-your-tealady-salary prices”

Wow Makho, that must be your favourite bag. It’s seen more things than I have :( VMA’s, NYFW. So jealous of it!

If David Tlale gets Angelina to rock his gear (which I hope) it will land him along the worlds best! First international ZA if not African clothing brand. David must just lose the Van der Tlale, this isn’t legit level.

Ace piece Makho! and congrats to Mr Tlale, this is his first collection with items that I wouldn’t mind owning especially his mustard range. They also appear to have a better finish technically.

I hope he scales the heights of NY ,the man has done well for himself.

The more DT showcases at the NYFW the more his clothes will be expensive.

  14. Smatsatsa on Wed, 12th Sep 2012 8:45 am

Congrats to David, he’s really impressed me with this collection..
The lady wearing a mustard dress in the second pic,, how thin is she compared to the one rocking the black dress??, uyadabukisa!
That sheer black dress is POWER!!! Please stay in your lane if you don’t have the body for it *side eyes duromaines team*

I love the outfit rocked by the model on the far right also in the second pic, I would totally rock that! The pants are gorgeous!

I’m not so sure about the red sparkly number..

  15. TreyScriptures on Wed, 12th Sep 2012 8:51 am

The black dresses are more commercial, I really can’t see South Africans rocking most of these. They’ll just cheapen brand Tlale. Would they even make size 34 up? So that cancels 3 quarters of South Africans out shame.

  16. Vesa on Wed, 12th Sep 2012 9:03 am

    Well done David Tlale!!!!

  17. Fezzy on Wed, 12th Sep 2012 9:03 am

Ngingazogqokelwa ubani nje lezinto? And I’d rather be team Duromines than to be thin like these ladies. Bayadabukisa ngempela.

Im a size 34/36 and Im ok, David u dont have to make size 34, I wudnt buy your clothes anyway. Like that suit on pic 3 and 4, the one with those round things that look like Venda traditional gear. Where would I wear that? Abantu abangaziyo would laugh at me.

I don’t get people who are going on about the Model’s weight. Hence they’re on the runway, they’re supposed to be THIN, size 0. These clothes aren’t made for duromine takers bandla. Ama teaLady salaries wenu can only buy a single glove of these, this kind of gear are designed for the posh/elites and they’re hardly ever large people. They don’t eat what you eat, 5 carbs in one serving.. Neh. So let the anorexics be, and the obese, be. Don’t judge people, cause if you were to hear what they say about you, you’d die.

  131. Smang-mang Warona on Wed, 12th Sep 2012 1:01 pm

Ja ne accounting hey.. As a former accountant, when I started studying, I wish someone had told me that Accounting is just a set of rules that you apply – over and over again. LEARN THE RULES first and foremost. As long as you know the rules, you can answer any question. And the most important thing is knowing what qualifies as an Asset, Liability, an Income and an expense as well as the concept of accrual. If you know this, everything makes sense…

  132. Letebele on Wed, 12th Sep 2012 1:02 pm

@Loulou: thanks for clarifying that one. Mchwa!

  133. Nerlee on Wed, 12th Sep 2012 1:07 pm

Interested in knowing what SmangMang does now since she calls herself a “former accountant” JUST CURIOUS

On that note I 2nd u Smang-mang, @Ntombi, READ THEORY FIRST (A CREDIT WILL ALWAYS BE A CREDIT), then apply IT when dealing with the number. THE WAY I LOVE ACCOUNTING HLE!!!!!

  134. Smatsatsa on Wed, 12th Sep 2012 1:07 pm

Ok here goes, Steve Biko was married and had a son, his name is Nkosinathi, then he met Mamphele and they had an affair, in the year Biko is arrested she discovers she is preggies and after Steve’s death ( I stand to be corrected ka timeline) and Hlumelo Biko is born.

Claire was dating Nkosinathi and if memory serves me well they even lived in the UK together. Hlumelo has a 3 or 4 year old son, this sin is NOT Claire’s Neo, because Neo is a good 7 years old this year… are we together Trey?

  197. TreyScriptures on Wed, 12th Sep 2012 3:12 pm

She and Biko had a long, passionate relationship. Though Biko was married at the time, he and Ramphele had two children, the first, a girl, Lerato Biko (1974), died of pneumonia at two months.[2] Their son, Hlumelo Biko, was born in 1978, after Biko’s death.[3]Due to her political activities, she was internally banished by the apartheid government to the town of Tzaneen from 1977 to 1984.

Let me rephrase hehe, I was trying to say *clears throat* since we discussed Biko’s affairs on this post dedicated to Tlale, whereas there actually is a post for Biko day here on JC today, I will make it up to Tlale by buying a cheap item @Legit to make up for it seeing I can’t afford to be buying R4500 dresses that were shown at the NYFW. (Assuming these dresses are around that pricing) phela he’s not on the Chanel, Versace, Gabbana, YvesSaintLaurent league yet.
Eish, such an unnecessary essay. But I hope I’m making sense now. And I’d think the most expensive single item @Legit wouldn’t cost more than R500

Mandela promised the late Mozambican president he’d marry Graca after he passed on. It was a request from the Moza president. Graca is so far the only woman in history (also in the Guiness world record) to have married 2 Presidents in one life time. Ey, what an ambitious Mfazi. There were jokes on twitter last night about which team Graca was supporting. Mozambique or Bafana Bafana
