Pics & Opinion: Rolling With Kelly Khumalo

Kelly Khumalo launched her new reality show last week in Sunninghill with members of the media, close friends and family. (No! Linda Moeketsi and Khanyi Mbau were not present, so let’s move right along for those that wanted that drama).

The unveiling of the show was followed by Kelly taking the stage to perform her new material. We all know that Sweet Baby Jesus lives in Kelly’s vocal chords, so her performances were nothing but stellar.

The show aired its first episode this past Sunday on “e-TV “, and left a lot of people asking if this is a reality show or a documentary? The first episode consisted of  members of Kelly’s circle of friends, family, journalists etc. speaking of Kelly from where she started , her downfall and now her attempt to make a come back.

I get that the aim of the first episode was probably to re-introduce viewers to Kelly, but I feel that as a Pilot of the show, it didn’t quite work and left viewers feeling like they have been misled.

A pilot episode is very important and can determine whether viewers return for the rest of the season or not and I can honestly say in that time slot where it’s competing with shows like “Idols”; episode 1 should have had much stronger content.

If I was going to switch from “Idols” and then tune in to what I thought would be a reality show, but instead seemed like a celebrity doccie profile, I would honestly feel misled and tuned right back to “Idols”.

I feel the first half of the show should have been the re-introduction of Kelly like they did it via interviews etc. but the second half should have began with the “reality show” aspect of the show, just to set the tone and give viewers a feel of what to expect and a reason to come back and watch next week.

As it is, I don’t think anyone has a sense of the narrative direction the show is going to go into. We get that it is about Kelly making a come back, but is this going to be a journey of her recording her latest album? Is it going to be about Kelly trying to go to a scripted Hollywood, then losing her mind on Twitter or is it going to be about Kelly building her business enterprise and exposing the world to the trashy “Diary” of  a crazy, lunatic and unstable woman? We just don’t know!

After episode 1 we still don’t know which direction the show is going to go, which was its greatest mistake as a pilot.

    Whether most people thought it was more like a documentary than a reality show, stop dissing hehehe yall know you’ll be back tuning in this Sunday.

    I though it was okay, just what I expected from Kelly vele, so yeh.
