“Sbu Mpungose Leaving Cosmo With Immediate Effect” Screams DRAMA!
September 13, 2012 by Brown Shuga
Hawu, it was just theother day when we were congratulating Sbu Mpungose on being the first black woman to edit Cosmopolitan Magazine so excuse me for suspecting there is a bit of Drama behind her sudden exit.
The statement from Cosmo says:
“It is with great regret that we have to announce that Sbu Mpungose has resigned as editor of Cosmopolitan South Africa,” says Vanessa Raphaely, editorial director of Associated Magazines. “We wish her well and thank her for the time she has spent here.”
Sbu Mpungose has been editor of Cosmopolitan for the past year and will leave the magazine to pursue personal interests.
Forget the fact that they are incorrect in saying Sbu was there for a year, it was only from 1 November, (making it just a little over 9 months) Cosmopolitan had a longer statement when Sbu joined the magazine, today they are sounding like bo Orlando Pirates/Bafana Bafana when they fire coaches… mmmh!

Mina I suspected tthere was trouble in paradise when Sbu changed her Twitter handle. Soon after she became Cosmo Editor, Sbu’s handle was @COSMOSbu and things were lekker.
Then one day she was on Twitter, going on and on about sexual content, can’t remember the tweets exactly but I know she was getting all sorts of retweets then all of a sudden I heard that the Raphaely clan wasn’t too happy with her tweets, they asked her to delete them and remove the Cosmo from her handle.
This is what I heard.
I was surprised though when I heard that, considering that Cosmo was so liberal about sexual matters but anyway… the COSMO was removed from Sbu’s twitter handle… and now there’s a resignation with immediate effect!
Sbu left a comment on MediaSlut blog about her departure:
Hi MediaSlut – its Sbu Mpungose here. Leaving Cosmo wasnt an easy decision. Its a job i never thought was within my reach, especially as a black woman. When the opportunity became available, I was both terrified and excited. My time at Cosmo has been well spent. Ive letf too soon, but Ive departed at the right time to explore all the opportunities the media industry has to offer. With media being so democratised through digital advancements, im in no doubt the next chapter of my life will be interesting. Oh, and if my CV lands in your inbox, shortlist a sister toe!
Suspect as the circumstances are, we wish Sbu all the best, she is a smart girl and there will definitely be other opportunities out there for her. Now we wonder what the issues was….. mmmh

I’m sure laba o-Raphaely bebemhlukumeza uSbu wagcina esethi abayithathe into yabo. The Raphaelys have been in charge of that mag forever (talk abt nepotism)
They & other SA women’s mags are just now realising there is a huge black market they’re ignoring, and thought they could get a black token. I’m guessing Sbu wasn’t having it. Abelungu banjalo vele, act like they’re giving you an opportunity, then think they can control you.
Vele i-Cosmo umbhedo nje. All abt how women can diet, to look better for a man. How to have great sex, to please a man. How to dress etc etc.
Very dodgy exit. All the best to Sbu.

Heheehehe this reminds me of my resignation with immediate effect ko blue bank, Phuck white people are the most evil souls, the give us blacks senior positions and still want to be incontrol #bitch I got here by merit not by umakazi. Some battles can’t be faught shame its better to resign sometimes then tell them SHIT when u leave. Sbu is beautiful yazi, am not a Cosmo target market so I never got to read/see her work there!

I like Sbu hey and all the best
@JohneighGALAXY™ on Thu, 13th Sep 2012 8:25 am
@Nerlee: Speaking of banks falsely giving Blacks positions w/ no power/control, some Blacks do stay there for the sake of the perks and the ‘prestige’, like the GM of ABSA; dude is just a front for false transformation, he does nix.
Leungo on Thu, 13th Sep 2012 8:29 am
I know Sbu as we used to work together. She is really a go getter but I guess it is clear from her response to MediaSlut that the job was just too big for her and she is actually admitting that herself.
Reading between the lines of the Cosmo response gives me the impression that she was fired.
Anyway, she will find something, she is a clever gil. I just wish she had not left her job at True Love because she was yet to make her mark when she left.
On a sidenot, for an editor, her grammar is beyond atrocious and her lack of punctuation very troubling too.

Leungo on Thu, 13th Sep 2012 8:38 am
To those that read Cosmo, did Sbu really transform it? As in tap into the black market by putting people that appeal to both black and white on the cover?
Maybe that was what Cosmo initially employed her for but when that did not happen they decided to let her go.
Look at it this way, crime is driving a lot of young educated white people out of teh country and those are the Cosmo readers. If 3 000 left in the past two years, it means the readership has gone down. So, whoever takes over will have to make sure that the mag gets those numbers back and more.
Therefore, if blacks and some whites did not find Cosmo appealing, it is the responsibility of teh new editor to make sure they do. Being an editor is no child’s play, you always have to make sure that you think out of the box to get more readers or keep the ones who have. You need to convince people why they need to part with their hard earned money for your magazine.

I bought the mag twice and for the ff reasons:
1. I was @ the airport and desperately wanted to read something to kill time. So I bought it and there was nothing special at all. I did not connect with it @ all. It then promised to have celebs on the next issue in lingerie (Minnie included)
2. In anticipation of the lingerie clad celebs, I bought the next one. Only to see Minnie and Tamara De)’s bra’s only. The bottom (and my main reaon my anticipation) was covered with some throws/duvets…nxa!
Will never buy it again ever! She’s definitely fired (maybe constructively)

I thought she did a kak job, or in fact, no job. There was no Sbu in that mag, it was still for whites, I had such hope even though I was sceptical…she should have stayed in her lane…incremental steps are better than leaps sometimes
Bohlez on Thu, 13th Sep 2012 9:31 am
Mina I think this is what happened, when Sbu was hired, she thought ( with the rest of us black woman) that she will transform the magazine to appeal to black people as well, and the o-Raphaely made it difficult for her, Mina I must say I started buying the mag after she was appointed thinking the will be a black cover and articles/ stories that I can identify with but tololo, and then cos she is a very smart girl, she got tired of being a glorified editor who does not make decisions about who to have on the cover, and she started challenging them, and then the was trouble in paradise…. mmmmmmm
Letebele on Thu, 13th Sep 2012 9:32 am
Sbu leaves True Love in less than a year. Sbu leaves Cosmo in less than a year. Common denominator=Sbu
The worst/least selling issue ya True Love ever in the history of the mag’s existence,Khanyi Mbau issue under Sbu’s leadership.
So as smart as everyone says she is,maybe she’s just not a good editor.
Nandisile on Thu, 13th Sep 2012 9:33 am
So i guess either Sbu was fed up and decided to resign imm as a fk you to the Raphaely’s who now have to panic over next edition of that crappy mag.
Or bamzumile and unexpectedly fired her, let her say she resigned so she doesn’t spill.
Who resigns without a new job offer waiting, unless they’re really unhappy?
Why would they fire her, 9months not long enough to prove yourself.. Esp with something as formulaic as Cosmo.
Maybe Vanessa R was still behaving like the editor & not giving her a chance? I also think she shoulda stayed at TL.
I’m so curious. Snapshot buya nendaba tu!
Nandisile on Thu, 13th Sep 2012 9:41 am
@loulou i also thought it would appeal to us after she came. But heard radio interview after she was hired where she basically said there’s not much she can change as Cosmo is worldwide with specific formula they use everywhere.
Sad to think we as black people are majority in this country, but almost all women’s mags are made for that 10% that is white…

i like sbu, she did a great job at True Love, when she took over, i read it back to back….then she moved to Cosmo and i saw no difference, honestly speaking, she was a glorified black editor!!!! those Raphaley (sp) girls would have never let her run things the way she wanted….shem….she was a token alright….the issue now is that she has done all the ‘black’mags…well most….who will take her now!!!time will tell……

Agreed! The cover stories are so badly written!
I’m a mag junkie but nowadays,I spend my money on popcorn and chocolate. At least I get some pleasure from those two.
Real Magazine is the only one that has held its place shem. To think they’re a lot more affordable than most of these popular ones. They don’t repeatedly put the same faces on their covers, which is the one thing I love about the mag.
What the hell happened to Soul mag bandla? Can they just stop printing it already? Yoh! They’re just waisting money/resources.

Vesa on Thu, 13th Sep 2012 10:16 am
Honestly speaking, I haven’t seen any work from her. Maybe because when she was at True Love, I wasn’t buying the magazine anymore. The same with Cosmo.
She was on Metrofm sometime last month…..and was going on about how reality shows are dragging women down. I listened for a good two hours and struggled to understand the points she was making. She was all over the show trying to justify her point of view, and the more she spoke on the issue…..the dumber she sounded!
Even Unathi, who I always find annoying, was waay too smart when she articulated her stand point and the reasons behind it

True love truly disappointed me when they put connie ferguson on the cover recently. i mean , what is it she cud tell us that we don’t know abt her after all these decades?!i was soooo put off- i suspected they are going back to they’re former obsession with generations stars.
As i sed abt cosmo rigidness (sic)- its a world wide mag so one can’t stray much frm it. i noticed alot more pics of black girls than before. even hair stuff incl blacks. but i’m not the cosmo target- i grew up reading that stuff. i u go thru a collection as extensive as my mom had (dating frm 1989) it wud depress u to realise how regurgitative their stuff was. esp the sex positions. they’d just change the names.heck, even their articles! same stuff abt ur man, ur career, blah blah blah. u can only be a cosmo reader for 3 yrs. starting in varsity.

@JohneighGALAXY™ on Thu, 13th Sep 2012 11:55 am
True Love died when Khanyi Dlomo left. It’s never been the same. Sbu must learn from her mistakes and come back better. My only problem w/ her tenure at Cosmo was that she was known for being a BLACK EDITOR rather than an astute professional. If you work for a company and all you are known as is a Black this-and-that, then know that you are only there as a token.

I’m sure Jane Raphael would kill for Khanyi Dhlomo’s clone….I think their vision for Cosmo when they hired Sbu was a Destiny Mag typa mag that will appeal to diverse target market.
She kinda liked the limelight though….

@Kamzababy, what did Sonia say?
I will never forget the way she gushed about her first baby with Lesley that if Melinda Ferguson had not mentioned her first baby, Sonia would have fooled people into believing that she was a first time mother. Who does that mara?
If Sonia’s first born child grows up with an inferiority complex, she must just know that it is her fault.

Sonia’s baby daddy’s name is Eddie. He is Zimbabwean. He used to own some stationery business. He drove around in the Crysler cabriolet car (can’t remember the name of the car). He was an absolute dog. Nja ya maoto a mabedi. Shagging anything and everything that was willing and available, then dumps and moves to latest available p*ssy.

BlackWoman on Fri, 14th Sep 2012 10:36 am
@mizzTMZ, there was one time when my friend (who knew this Eddie character) showed me an kid who barely looked 18 and told me the girl was Eddi’s latest squeeze. I was so angry and disguted. She was too young and was being used, then dumped like a used tampon.
Applepurple on Fri, 14th Sep 2012 11:13 am
@BlackWoman so there is nothing exotic about him ne? and how is his hair? is it kinky like ours?
bumbum on Fri, 14th Sep 2012 11:41 am
Lol @APple asking is it a kinky afro, mara Sonia said its kind of different nje. Hahaha
Vesa on Fri, 14th Sep 2012 11:53 am
@bumbum….I remember reading that back then in True Love. And she specifically mentioned that he was from Moz. Not unless she was lying then….but what for? And her kid looks a bit coloured, with the hair and all. I know that Sonia is light skinned but she doesn’t have that kinda hair….

I think its got something to do with Associated magazines, even Omagazine could never keep their black editors.I reckon it has to do with how The Raphaely family run that publishing company. Based on what I’ve observed the staff is not racially balanced.its largely white with a few exceptions ie black drivers and office cleaning staff. its very troubling actually.
