Steve Bantu Biko Day!

September 12, 2012 by

On this day in 1977, Steve Bantu Biko died in police custody. If you’ve ever watched the movie Cry Freedom or read about his life then you would have an idea of the circumstances.

His death angers me and I think that’s why I stay away from getting too deep into what happened in the past because it is upsetting and only when you really look at such things do you understand how forgiving black people have been.

So on this day, marking 35 years since his murder, what does Steve Biko’s death mean to you? What lessons do you take away from his life and what he taught?

May his soul rest in peace

The fact that he was being transported at the back of an open truck when he was in a coma for a thousand kilometres still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.. Whites were/are evil! #Youchoose!

Robert Sobukwe, who died of lung cancer 9 years after his release from Robben Island.. there were reports that they served crushed bottles in his food.. #Gofigure

Now may we please get the Steve Biko Square, Steve Biko Bay. This man was a liberator. Pity his life was cut short, I believe he would have gotten us much much much further! No lies

I wonder how SA would be with him and aboChris Hani still alive today. How would they have changed the landscape of our politics. I still have to read about his life, as i know bits and pieces. **makes a not to get that “i write/say what i like” book**

Biskiti they would have made a contribution mos def, but I wonder how long it would have took them to start self-enriching themselves.. Just a question, no disrespect done..
I mean, the likes of your Tokyo were also part of their liberation movement, look at where they are today, fat cats who used the struggle to contest for their agendas and not the country!

    Makes one wonder!

When you think of what Steve Biko and many like him ( just less publicised) went through so that we as blacks could be proud of being black, you feel ashamed at what those in power who were put in place to continue such work, to correct the injustices of the past, to attempt to make us all equal, have done. We are no longer oppressed by other races, but have now turned on each other. The concept of Ubuntu is just that… a concept, a utopian dream. Once we as black people stop having an inferior complex and in turn stop hating each other, we might just stand a chance of seeing his dreams come true. I for one am glad he is not alive to see the fruit of what he fought for.

Steve Biko and Robert Sobukwe, talk about men who knew about black pride. Steve was the father of black consiousness movenment in this country. He was all for balck liberation through the mind and that we must be self-reliant and not depend too much on assistance from the white people. AZAPO has been going on and on begging the ANC regime to properly acknowledge his contribution.

It is so sad that the ANC has become the new white, your black diamonds don’t care much about politics or service delivery issues since they stay in well serviced suburbs.

I wathced Malema’s 5-minute interview on Amanpour’s CNN show. Tjerr, it was badly conducted and Amanpour did not do Malema justice by asking trivial questions.

Smatsatsa it’s just days like this that make it hard :(
I made a concious decision never to paint the two same people with one brush, treat each as an individual and make judgements based on their actions towards me personally! Ai anyway! May the legacy of Biko live on!
