New On SABC 3 – The Sing Off
Hosted by Nick Lachey, this show features acapella groups who do amazing things with their voices with no back-up band or safety net.
The show features judges Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men, singer/songwriter Ben Folds and singer/pianist Sara Bareilles who scour the country in search of the best a cappella groups, ranging in various sizes and ages. The series features 16 of the best groups who compete for the chance to walk away a Sony Music recording contract and R1.6 million in prize money.
SABC3 Marketing Manager Risuna Mayimele: “Reality shows have become enormously popular worldwide, especiallysinging reality shows as music resonates with people across all borders. SABC 3 is thrilled to be bringing this popular and one of a kind musical reality show to SA for the first time and hope that viewers will be kept mesmerized with the incredible a capella voices.
One group will be eliminated every week during this one-of-a-kind battle of voices that will lead up to a live finale where viewers decide the winner.
The host Nick Lachey had this to say about the show: “A capella is something I’m passionate about. I grew up singing a cappella and with 98 Degrees did a lot of a cappella, so it’s great to see it celebrated in this sizzling show. For me, it’s the most difficult and truest way of singing. There’s nowhere to hide. There is no instrumentation or backing vocals. It’s your talent, your voice, on stage naked. You find out pretty quickly what you can do. That moment when you hit that perfect blend and hit that perfect note – there’s nothing like it!”
Nick Lachey, a multi-platinum recording artist, actor and television personality, first rose to stardom as the front man of the popular band 98 Degrees, selling 10 million albums worldwide and charting several top 40 hits. In 2003, Lachey launched an enormously successful solo album career. Lachey is also known for the hit reality show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica with his then-wife Jessica Simpson.
