The Muffinz Album Review

The Muffinz – Have You Heard?

I first heard of the Muffinz when a close friend of mine asked me if I’ve heard of these young men, he then did me the pleasure of sending me the song via BBM, and it was love at first sound.

On that day I sent a twoogle (tweet) asking if anyone knows their twitter handle, a tweep responded with their handle which is @Muffinz_Live and said their album is out in stores. I paid a visit to my nearest Musica and bought the album & I couldn’t wait to get home and press play, and press play is what the album is….

Have You Heard– this is the title track of the album, it kicks off the album with an acoustic sound. It’s a groovy jazzy and a “we have arrived” track.Ghetto– this one kinda reminds us about where we from, ekasi…..it starts up as upbeat and it ends of soooo smooth….it’s a beautiful song.Come With Me– now this would have been the title track for me. The lyrics, arrangement, melody and the pureness of the song are so well placed. It just makes u wanna pack ur bags & go to nev

er never land.. “Come with me over the rainbow I’m leaving my sorrows behind”…Perfect pick me up song…

Djoni Kopou – what does it mean u ask, I have tweeted The Muffinz asking the same Question, no luck. This track proves beyond a reasonable doubt that music is a universal language. Goosebumps stuff…

The Next Superman – This one doesn’t speak that much to me.

Sicela Kuwe – The harmonization on this track is heavenly, they totally show off their vocal skillz.”Sicela kuwe, sicela kuwe,Menzi wezulu Mdali womhlaba” u will find urself singing along. It’s a jazz infused gospel song…

Soldiers (Fight For Peace) – Its about “soldiering” on in life, despite all the ups and downs we face. The guitar on this track will string u to sway…

Sound Check – This is my ten over ten track, I can’t listen to this song once. Your volume has to be on maximum. It’s one of those songs that leave u wanting more… enchanted even.

The River – upbeat, sing along but my least favourite in the album.

Khumbul’ekhaya – very nice sing along, it’s for amagoduka,it’s about that longing to be home.”Ngikhumbul’ekhaya ekhaya labazali”

Umsebenzi Wendoda – this is the song that made me buy the album, this track is the perfect closing song. It’s about appreciation of single mothers, giving thanks and appreciation to them.

The fact that this is a jazz album does not deter from the fact that it can be enjoyed by young and old alike. The Muffinz are definitely a force to be reckoned with, their music is so refreshing, soulful and electric. The production is impeccable.

I’m already thinking live dvd *hint hint*.It’s worth every cent. You think you’ve heard it all until you listen to this album.

I LOVE the Muffinz. First heard them perform on campus at UJ when they were in a competition and they won R20K. I’ve loved them ever since. And I agree, Soundcheck is such a beautiful song.
