Red Carpet: 5th Crown Gospel Awards
By The Durban Correspondent
The Crown Gospel Awards have become something of a tradition for me. I’ve been going to them for the past four years (I missed the first one because I was still a student then) and every year the one thing I look forward to more than anything is what Zanele Mbokazi, or rather Zanele LaMbokazi Nkambule, will be wearing. I think her outfits are bigger than the Crowns and garner more publicity, whether good or bad. But more on that later.
I have long given up on the fashion at the CGAs. It’s really pointless for us to complain every year about it when these people actually make us laugh. Whoever said that gospel is about shiny suits, OTT ball gowns and the new craze, blinged up hair? The hair clips/brooches or whatever that the ladies wear lately are awful.
Fikile Mlomo (who’s an amazing singer BTW) was leading the pack with the hair bling. It looks stupid and unless you really need it, don’t wear it. It looks cheap and it’s not a good look when those cheap weaves are now blinged up and shining brighter than Rihanna’s Diamond.
Thank goodness there weren’t much of those shiny suits. However there’s a sudden craze with these blazers that cut off at the elbow. What’s the deal with those gents? They are horrible and it’s rude to wear them.
I actually blame Solly Mahlangu for this. Solly is a rock star and he loves his fans. He was performing for them on the red carpet. That was cool.
And then there was Kgotso. You know, being fat is NOT wrong, but why do married people suddenly decide to gain weight? Kgotso was in shape when he entered IWTSG and now he’s fat AF, as the Twitter kids would say.
I was a tad late for the red carpet. When I arrived, Rebecca Malope (she looked beautiful) was getting out of those horrible white limousines and making her way up the red carpet.
You know, I’ve always wondered why people like using limo’s. They are abnormal cars and there’s nothing cool about them. They’re rather phony and if you wanted to show me how wealthy you are then please show up in a normal, but super expensive car. Then I’d know how rich/important you are.
Speaking of importance, what is it with South Africans and liking this VIP status?
It’s ridiculous how people actually bought VIP tickets, which included the limo (eug) ride and a walk on the red carpet. That there were so many random ‘VIPs’ that walked the red carpet that I got tired of taking pictures.
Why can’t the famous people or the nominated artists be the ones who walk the red carpet?
Now you have all sorts of people with their delusions of grandeur thinking that they’re famous when they are not.
I was even asked by this lady why I wasn’t taking a picture of her. I didn’t even bother answering.
If you have to beg for you picture to be taken, know one thing: YOU AINT FAMOUS! Now stop acting like it.
Two FLOSA’s (First Lady of SA) were present at the awards.
Naturally Mantuli Zuma (what’s her name again?) was there as always since she’s BFFs with Zanele. I was pleasantly surprised to see Thobeka Madiba-Zuma. Guys, she’s HOT! Flames! You must know. She’s lost more than 20KG’s and she looks like a million bucks. Pity about her fellow FLOSA because she looks ridiculously fat. Those arms? Yoh. And those off the shoulder dresses she’s so fond of? She needs to do something about her weight. She must make this a campaign and fight obesity in children and adults. With her as the ambassador for this, who knows, it might endear her to people. FL’s should do something bakithi.
Other prominent people spotted include Loyiso Bala,
Tsepo and Swazi Mngoma,
Ntokozo and Nqubeko Mbatha, Jabu Hlongwane, Keke Phofolo, Veliswa Skeyi, Deborah Fraser, Benjamin Dube,
Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Sipho Makhabane, Martin Phike, Sizwe Zako, and a whole lot of other gospel stars.
There’s so many of them, I get tired just thinking of them.
Vicky Vilakazi and friend
Veliswa Skeyi and hubby
Siya Mhlongo and Partner
… and the shoes
Groupie action with Ziyon
Charisma of IWTSG fame
Likers of things….
That orange shirt and eyebrows…

More likers of things…
Durban socialite, Tha
Babo and Sgwili
Bhodloza and the Mrs
Dudu Khoza and designer..
Bonga Mpanza and friend
Nonhlanhla and Thabo Mdluli
Some personalities who were there include Lerato Kganyago (I love her already, so real), Slikour (who sucked while presenting an award), Zizo Beda (humble, humble girl.)
Khanyi Magubane (she needs to have a serious talk with her friends for allowing her to wear leopard print when she knows that she’s overweight.
Thembi Seete, Palesa Mocinyane (OMFW can she STOP it with the AYEYE and those seriously horrible, strapless ball gowns she wears. I’m certain she buys one every time she goes to an event, which I’m sure is weekly.) Lunga Shabalala looked dapper in his suit.
Now for Zanele. Love her or hate her, you know she’s got the South African media wrapped around her finger. When she and her husband came in, those flash bulbs were worthy of Hollywood royalty. And she sucked it all in, like the pro she is. She loves the spotlight and was born for it.
And the dress. I keep track of all of Zanele’s dresses. In 2009 she wore a red gown, which was worn by Ayanda Ncwane last year. 2010 she wore that monstrosity of a dress- that green, yellow and blue mess. Last year she looked like Belle from Beauty and the Beast (those gloves) and this year she actually surprised many by not going too OTT. She wore a red mermaid dress. I didn’t like it, but it’s better than last year’s so it’s an improvement on her side. Pity about the hair and the hairline. Why ungaphemi since everyone is doing it?
Sgwili’s wife in a similar dress…
So the fashion wasn’t as bad as previous years, but it still is a long way to go.
